Alyss walked into potions, feeling a little down. She had grown used to Hogwarts by now, and actually couldn’t believe that they were about a quarter of the way through the year already! She settled down at her station, taking a deep breath. She’d had some ups and downs, and overall was doing pretty well right now.

She enjoyed potions, the precise art of combining just the right ingredients and just the right amount of each to make a perfect magical brew. The best part was that there was always a correct answer and incorrect answer. It wasn’t like History of Magic, where you had to explain your answers and why you believed in it- it was simply the question of following the recipe to the very last drop.

Alyss tuned out the arrival of other students, instead reaching for the book Magical Drafts and Potions, and plucking it from her bag, placing it in the table before her. Today, they were supposed to be learning about different antidotes to poisons, something that Alyss questioned the need of, but ended up shrugging off. Might as well have the knowledge.

Nodding at the girl approaching her station, Alyss recognized her as her dormmate. Although the two shared a dorm, they hadn’t had the opportunity to get very close, and so Alyss really only knew her name, given how little time she spent in her dorm. “Hey Genevieve, you wanna be my partner today?” She questioned, motioning for her fellow Slytherin to join her at the cauldron.

Alyss was being friendly, but not overly so, due to her lack of energy as the moment, and offered Genevieve a small smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. It was hard to notice that the smile wasn’t genuine, as Alyss had practiced regularly in a mirror to nail a small, friendly looking, and natural smile. This was to seem kinder and to avoid any questions that might come up due the lack of a grin present on her face.
