Relentless study was the only thing in Eugenia’s brain at the moment. The girl was a perfectionist and despite her over-burdened schedule, she always made time for study. Because perfection was everything. And academic perfection only stems from relentless studying. What often made it difficult to do that was the fact that she seldom ever found suitable places to study. On her list, the ideal place was quiet, without many people, a place where she could seclude herself from the world and do her thing. Oh, and a place where she could practice her spells without being bothered.

As she came out of her last class of the day, Defence Against the Dark Arts, she decided to briefly visit the common room. That wasn’t because she wanted to study there. Rather, she would get some supplies, her book, and an old music box from her father’s house back in Greece. She’d need all those when trying to study. At least, she felt she would.

The Second Year left the common room, descending one story to reach the library, her top choice. And oh dear it was crowded. Damn. Not the library I guess. She mumbled quietly and left the room, going back to the Great Hall. For a moment, she sat on a spare chair, trying to decide where to go next. Hmm. Study Room or the Abandoned Classroom. Unable to choose, she took a galleon out of her bag and spinned it. Looking down on her palm, she realised that her study place would be the abandoned classroom.

She placed her bag on her shoulder again, walking up to the second floor. Hogwarts was filled with staircases, bustling ones indeed. It took her a good 10 minutes until she managed to find the corridor of the classroom. Just then, a faint noise caught her ear. Stretching her ear, her tried to hear the noise again. What was it? It sounded like a person. Eugenia walked to the classroom, which also happened to be the nearest room and peered inside. There was a young girl inside. Was she alright? But before she could speak to the girl- who was she?

The Greek Girl was perceptive. She looked at the girl for a moment. Wait. She could recognise her. It was Abbey Thompson. A first year Hufflepuff she had offered to take under her wing. A girl who was strikingly similar to her little sister, Ifigenia, in terms of personality. She looked back to their meeting in the common room before breakfast a sheer 5 days ago. The girl had been so cheerful that day. What had gone wrong? Why was Abbey here alone and not with her friends? Why had she chosen this space? Why the classroom?

Wel,, Eugenia already knew the answer to that. She had been in the same position before. Hadn't she? She doubted one of Abbey’s family members was dead. Though, she did look really wrong. Eugenia walked in quietly barely making her presence heard.

Κρινιώ μου. meaning: my lily Abbey. Are you alright? What’s wrong? She sighed for a moment. Poor girl. She must need help. Don’t worry. I won’t hurt you or judge you. Little Lily, is everything fine? A small smile on her lips. A sad one. Like a sister, she knew how it was to feel sad. Like a sister in feeling. In pain. Each other’s pain.

Speech: "Abbey’s speech" "Eugenia’s speech"
After a long day of school Abbey was tired and all she wanted was to be alone with her thoughts for a couple of minutes. One of the most “both good, but bad” things at Hogwarts was the amount of people everywhere. Abbey liked people, but sometimes it was a bit much being around strangers for a whole day. Her day hadn’t started well neither. She had spilled jam on her robes eating breakfast in the great hall and had to spend her whole first class standing in the bathroom trying to get it off with just water and soap. She did get it of in the end, but missed her first class which was charm her favourite.

The first year girl walked out of her last class for the day. She didn’t have any plans wich she was happy about, because of how tired she was. The only thing she had in mind now was to find a quiet place where she could be alone for a while. She walked up the stairs two floors not having any idea where she was going. She then just walked down the corridor until she got to a classroom. The door to the room was wide open and it was empty and quiet. She walked in after she had clarified that the room was empty with a, "Hello?" The girl looked around before taking a seat on top of a desk in the middle of the room.

The room was cold and dark with barely anything in it. Abbey sat there alone thinking about the day and taking it all in. She was tired and her thoughts quickly turned into sad ones. She began thinking about how much she missed her parents and how much she wished they were here on a bad day like this. Her parents were the ones that always made her feel better when she was down or something had happened at school. Her eyes began tearing up, but she didn’t care to try to stop it. She was alone and just let it happen. Tears began rolling down her face as she sat there on the desk looking down at the floor.

Abbey didn’t notice that someone was there before a girl standing by the door asked her, "Abbey. Are you alright? What’s wrong? Don’t worry. I won’t hurt you or judge you. Little Lily, is everything fine?" Abbey dried her tears with the sleeves of her robe before she looked up at the girl. She noticed her right away and was more than glad it was who she thought it was. "Eugenia?" you could hear that Abbey had been crying when she talked. "I’m fine…" Abbey paused. She knew it was obvious she wasn’t, but she felt like she was. "I’m just tired"

Slowly and carefully, the young Greek girl came closer to Abbey. Looking around for a fleeting moment, she went and grabbed two chairs from another desk nearby. Abbey sat on the desk. Eugenia didn’t trust the desk enough when it came to holding up the weight of both girls. Better not risk it. She placed the two chairs opposite to one another, gesturing to Abbey. She had to sit down. Hey, Abbey. Please, sit down. Let’s talk alright.

Her tone was soft. She didn’t want to startle or upset the girl more. She didn’t look good, after all. And Eugenia wasn’t stupid either. She could understand the difference between “fine”, “tired” and “visibly upset”. Abbey was very visibly upset, a fact no one could deny. A fleeting look around the room, a small peer into the empty corridor. She didn’t want anyone to hear their conversation. It could end up being a sad one, a private one.

Private things should stay private.

The Greek girl now turned her gaze to Abbey. She chose to observe her little lily for a moment. When she spoke, there was an evident waver in her voice, a tell tale sign that she was not okay. It sounded as if she had cried. And well, there were more signs pointing to that conclusion. Her eyes spotted fresh tears on her sleeves, her face was shining. Shining from her tears. Her eyes were red, watery. What was wrong? The girl got worried. Was Abbey hurt?

Gently, she placed a warm hand on her shoulder, then a pat on the back. She looked really sad. Like she was in an awful situation. Memories from her breakdown in this classroom began resurfacing. But no. It wasn’t time to plague the first-year’s consciousness with her struggles and grief. It wasn’t the right time.

The young girl’s eyes began to prickle with salty tears. But no, she was determined to stay strong for Abbey. The little girl needed her. A few sharp gulps of slightly cold air. It was going to be fine. My dear. Abbey. Please, tell me, what’s wrong. Tell me your pain. It is very difficult to carry it alone. I know you have cried. I have seen it, on your clothes, your face. You are definitely not fine. Don’t kid me. Did anything happen? Bullying? Please, tell me. A short, stern sigh.

Little Lily… Abbey. Look at me. LOOK AT ME. You are not alright. You’re not just tired. I’ve been in this situation before. Let me help you. You don’t deserve to be in tears. Not really thinking about her actions, she looked up. And thrust the girl into a hug. You can cry, cry on my shoulder. Just promise me something. I want you to tell me why. Even if the reason sounds stupid. Okay? Mutual trust was key now.

Eugenia needed to earn her trust. They had to communicate this pain to one another, if it meant reaching a conclusion together. A sigh. No, today wasn’t going to be about studying. It was about pain. Pain they had to face together. Did Abbey want to connect?

Speech: "Abbey’s speech" "Eugenia’s speech"
Abbey watched as Eugenia found two chairs and moved them over to her, placing them opposite to one another. The girl gestured for Abbey to sit down on one of the chairs instead. "Hey, Abbey. Please, sit down. Let’s talk alright." Abbey didn’t think the desk would break or that it was dangerous to sit on, but understood that it would be best to have a conversation facing one another. Maybe Eugenia preferred eye contact? She thought before she nodded and stood up from the desk. She made her way over to the chair the closest to her and sat down.

She wasn’t really interested in a conversation at the moment, but since it was Eugenia she didn’t want to be rude and make her leave. Abbey sat there silent for a while. Once in a while she would rub her eyes or dry her tears with the sleeves of her robe, trying to hide the fact that she had cried, even though she knew Eugenia most likely had already noticed it.

After some silent minutes Abbey repeated what she had told Eugenia earlier, "I’m just tired, I promise" The young girl was tired but it wasn’t just that. She didn’t want to talk about it though and in her opinion it wasn’t something that was that important to talk about. She would be fine, she just needed some time alone, right?

Eugenia didn’t seem to believe her. She told Abbey that she had noticed that she had been crying. That didn’t shock Abbey, but when Eugenia asked if she had been bullied, then Abbey felt the need to clarify it quickly. "No no! I haven’t been bullied… I’m fine" The ”I’m fine" was something Abbey again knew Eugenia wouldn’t believe, but she just felt like she had to say it again. She still felt fine, just sad.

Abbey looked down at her shoes. She didn’t like sharing things like this and usually didn’t with others than her own family and her best friend. She wanted to get to know Eugenia better and be able to tell her things like that she missed her family, but in this moment she didn’t know how to tell her.

The first year girl looked at Eugenia the moment she raised her voice. She didn’t know that Eugenia had been in this situation before, but it made it easier to tell her. Abbey hesitated as she looked at Eugenia with watery eyes. "I-" she paused thinking. Abbey looked down at her shoes again and after a while she mumbled something, "I miss my family…"

Her decisions might have sounded impulsive. But, if fact, they weren’t. Eugenia knew that. She thought back to how Ruby had helped her. She was there, ready to hear, but she never forced her to do anything. Instead, Eugenia felt forced to talk by just seeing her kindness. With Abbey, she knew that the girl wasn’t so desperate. Otherwise she would have talked already. She wouldn’t be refusing her own reality. Trying to hide herself when she had already been so exposed and vulnerable. When she sat down, Eugenia was relieved. At least she wasn’t barring off the help.

Her questions went almost unanswered. Had she blundered up? No, Greeks never gave up. Even if the thing they wanted to do was so difficult, it seemed like there was no way to achieve it. Her kindness might have seemed fake, but it was genuine. What if, though, Abbey didn’t like the pressure. Had it, ultimately, been the thing that made her crumble in the first place? Of course, she did seem only a little tired, in front of the mountain of her tears. Was that the thing that sparked it all?

The two of them looked at each other, each in their own thoughts. Eugenia’s thoughts were swimming in her head, she didn’t know which to address first. But in no way would she listened to the little voice in the dark chambers of her memory telling her to leave Abbey alone. How would the story have ended if she kept crying over her grandfather? Who knew. Company though made her feel happier. And she didn’t care so much about the degree of grief she showed. It was OK to be sad. How will you know you’re happy if you never see the other side of the coin?

Abbey would repeat that she was just tired. Eugenia closely observed her motions, tone of voice. No, those weren’t true words. “Words of the air” as the Greeks would say. They didn’t mean anything to her, as she saw how the girl looked. She was NOT just tired. How many times would Abbey try to lie to her? Wasn’t it obvious she wasn’t saying the truth? At least she wasn’t bullied. That, for one, was good news. Bullying was difficult and a very bad thing. Little Lily was too pure for it.

The young girl looked back on her shoes. When Eugenia raised her voice, however, it was evident that Abbey was intrigued. She raised her head again, and they locked eyes. The young girl’s teary gaze meant a lot to her. They had mutual trust.

She looked at her shoes again. And Abbey spoke.

She missed her family.

Aw. That was the first of Eugenia’s thoughts. Yea, that was a big struggle the first years had to deal with. Not everyone was preoccupied with other thoughts and Eugenia was no exception. Only that she was a total introvert, not wanting to talk about it at all. She just cried alone at night. A slight smile on her face, she tried to hug Abbey again. Hey. It’s alright. It’s fine to miss your family. It is one of the things that show how much you truly love them. Biting back her own words and tears that attempted to stream out of her eyes, she looked at Abbey’s teary eyes and spoke again.

I miss my family too. This is the reality of Hogwarts, of boarding schools in general. No, not just that, I’m sorry. With change. You are missing what you left behind, because you loved that. But this is a change that will end, one day. The holidays will come, graduation will come, and you will see your family again. A way to feel better is to send them letters. She held back tears again, remembering her “letters”. I miss my little sister a lot. You’re just like her.

Maybe we can be family for each other Abbey. Like sisters.

Speech: "Abbey’s speech" & "Eugenia’s speech"
Abbey accepted the hug from Eugenia and leaned closer hugging the girl tightly. This hug meant a lot to Abbey, she really needed it more than she had thought. Telling Eugenia the truth felt like a bigger relief than she had expected and she didn’t feel as sad anymore. It was like weight was lifted off her shoulders. Like she wasn’t so alone anymore. This was the moment she knew Eugenia wanted the best for her and that she could trust her with anything at any time. Abbey felt like Eugenia truly cared about how she was feeling and how she was doing. A friend like that was someone Abbey was really thankful for having.

Abbey let go of the hug and leaned back a bit in her chair. She then dried a few more tears on her cheeks. "Hey. It’s alright. It’s fine to miss your family. It is one of the things that show how much you truly love them." That was something Abbey hadn’t thought about before. It was true though, it really was. She did love her family and maybe missing them was a good thing in a way. It proved her love for her mother, father and siblings.

Abbey nodded and agreed to everything Eugenia said. It was all true and Abbey knew that, she just found it hard to remember it while she was sad about missing her family. It sort of became the only thing she could think about, the fact that she wouldn’t see them again in a long time.

"I miss my little sister a lot. You’re just like her. Maybe we can be family for each other Abbey. Like sisters." Abbey smiled, she would have loved that. She had two older siblings at Hogwarts already, but she didn’t usually talk to them about her feelings and stuff. They were both a lot older then her too, so having someone like a sister around her age at Hogwarts would be great. "I would love to be your Hogwarts sister" She wasn’t sure if that was what they would call it, but it would work for now.

Eugenia smiled, her gaze showing how sad she felt at the moment, but she masked her feelings. It was a sport she was way better at than most people, so it wasn’t so difficult for her. Breaking away from the hug, she felt a bit better, knowing that the little girl had accepted, as she felt the tightness around her loosen. For the same little girl, Eugenia had to be strong, and only show her good side. For know. It wasn’t the time for Abbey to know about her tears. It was about her. Complete selflessness on her part here.

But as she talked to the girl, she felt a rising lump in her throat. Abbey’s nods were encouraging, but she still felt like she had done the wrong thing. You are not supposed to break down in front of someone you want to help. The lump kept rising. Her head got heavy. But she didn’t show it. For Abbey. She knew they needed each other. Eugenia May have broken down in front of anyone else, but her feelings were better managed then.

As if there was some invisible and unintelligible spell that had bound her feelings shut. Though this illusion of control wasn’t meant to last for long. When Abbey accepted her offer, part of Eugenia wanted to celebrate with all her heart. At least in Hogwarts, Abbey would be like the little sister she had left behind, though less like sisterly “love”, but more like “best friends”. She wanted to confide in the first year, but she felt it would be too much.

A single tear escaped her eyes. Thank you, thank you for accepting this offer. You have no idea how much this means to me. I miss my little sister dearly and, if we can’t have them here, we might as well help each other. Burying her face in her hands for a moment she drew a deep breath. It wasn’t time to cry. But another tear flowed. Maybe Abbey should know.

You know, Lily, it feels so tiring all this. Your family not there and you having to be the best version of yourself, almost perfect. I don’t know anymore, I strive for perfection, but it all feels so wrong, so difficult. And Quiddich… I love it all, but I don’t know how to communicate this feeling of tiredness. Uhh. Forgive me, I’m just rambling about myself. There’s no reason, really.

Something told her she should detour the conversation. Enough was said on her part. She lifted a burden off of Abbey’s shoulders, no need to plunge her deeper into worry. So, how’s your family? Do you have siblings in Hogwarts? How old are they? A fragile smile on her lips again. The bottle’s edges were fragile too. Only time would tell if the contents spill out or not.
