Peter had been waiting. Waiting and waiting. For the Autumn Ball. Incredibly, he was going with Aurélie. When he had asked her if Aurélie wanted to go to the ball with him, he was expecting for a quiet rejection. Instead, Aurélie had said yes! As he thought of that, he smiled extra large. He was pacing in the male lavatories, as he thought hard on what he was to say.
Should I thank her for coming to the ball with me? Do I comment on how beautiful the transformed Great Hall is? Peter had stole a glance from the hall, when he suddenly felt all choked up, and he ran to the lavatory, lest someone might see him. He took a glance at the mirror, then his bow-tie, he knew he should of gone with a old skinny forties tie, than a stupid black-and-white bow-tie. But it was too late now. He was wearing a pair of stiff white dress trousers and matching white dress shirt which his great great grandfather had worn in the forties. His white shoes clicking with every step, Peter decided that he needed to just go out there.
Peter peered through the Great Hall’s doors, how transmogrified the entire hall was. Catching glance of Aurélie’s brown hair in a grey dove clip, he seemed to pull up a worst case generator in his brain. Then he saw the long flowy dress the French girl was wearing. She looks gorgeous in that...
After Peter had intentionally strolled into the Great Hall, his legs pulled him to Aurélie, and he would of never done this if it was a different circumstances... But, this was the Fall Ball and there was nothing like starting it out without a little scare, right? Peter placed his hands on Aurélie’s shoulders and said, “Boo.”

Emily looked fine. Not too fancy but not too boring to lack the part. She was never really good at dressing up for social events. Her dress for the Spring Ball was cute but she didn't feel like her in it, especially not with that tacky mask she had to wear for it. Despite everything she had heard about Hogwarts events going awol because of some attack or other over the last several months, Emily still had a much better feeling about this one.
For one, she was in an outfit that was actually "Emily-esque," with her usual cardigan and skirt pairing fitting her snugly, all dipped in the navy and black colours called upon by the noir theme of the evening. Her black tights shielded her legs from the cold from outside and through tremendous effort, she managed to style her hair into a braid with one of many silk ribbons at her disposal, though "Auntie" would've done miles better of a job if she were here.
For another, she actually had a partner for the dance. Well, technically several. It would've been no surprise that Emily would be going with Scout. After being joined at the hips for so long, much of their social interaction came naturally, almost as natural as breathing air. The twist however was that Casey would be here too. She had the growing suspicion he might not hang around too much though after the Hogsmeade fiasco; he looked a bit on edge for most of the day given the head injury he sustained days ago (even though it healed up nicely afterwards). Emily doubted she would be too bothered by that though. It's not that she could blame him for nearly dying in such a terrible event.
Walking into the Great Hall, the scenes of dancing, food, mood lighting and colourful - or rather, not too colourful - outfits greeted her. She glanced at all the food splayed out across the tables and the film posters on the walls. Some she recognised, others not so much. Magical fog pooled between the attendees' feet, as well as Emily's gone invisible through the thick of it. The jazz music playing on the other end of the room reached her ears, the tunes both nostalgic and catchy.
She weaved around the crowds looking for Scout and Casey. She recognised Tesla Stone in passing, to which Emily smiled after seeing her enjoy herself. That reassurance doubled when she caught sight of Colin being his "Colin" self. He was one of many Emily was a little worried about, especially after hearing about "Le Incident" at the Ball a couple years ago. Even if he did move on from that, Emily wasn't going to deny the worry she had that events like these might open old wounds for him, in some way or another. It would be no shock to her if he was secretly sniffing about for any trouble lurking either in the fog or through the walls. Evelynn Decipio was caught in Emily's periphery as well, looking as powerfully elegant as usual. Emily still couldn't tell what Evelynn made of her after their first encounter last year. Perhaps it was better if she didn't know... Everyone else made their opinions quite clear, and Emily was more than certain to guess that Evelynn could be no different. But Emily would never know. She couldn't help but feel a little afraid of Evelynn, most likely because Emily felt a little less collected and more whimsical than her. Or maybe it was actually the wisdom she held and how much Emily had yet to uncover? It could've been both for all Emily knew.
While everyone in the room was unequivocally here to have a good time, Emily held firmly onto the suspicion a few faces would be keeping their guard up, particularly the older students if these rumours were true. Emily would be too. She wanted to see for herself if "monsters" at Hogwarts events were an urban legend or if they truly were indeed real. She heard enough testimonies to believe the latter, but Emily knew she couldn't follow through with her "grand design" unless she saw it for herself.
Standing at the left side and out of the way of others, she scanned the crowds again.

Amber smiled slightly. Some would say that she was lucky to go to the ball with Miles. I guess she was. Honestly, she was just glad to go with someone. Not that she even felt like being here anymore after the incident. She sighed. And she had no want to date right now after what had happened last time. She was not going to think about this now.
"Well, yes, I guess so. But the whole coming to the ball together was not planned," Amber said, giggling, "It was more of a truth or dare type of thing with the Quidditch team. Neither of us have plans of dating or anything,"
She had to set the mood. But her words did make herself blush. She had to agree with Casey, he was hella good looking. Maybe her type? Maybe not? She didn't know. But she wasn't going to think about that at all. This ball was for friendship purposes ONLY. Nothing more.
"But I do agree, he needs to hurry up! Same with yours!" she added, scanning the room for Miles. "Who did you say you were waiting for again?" she asked.
Amber agreed with Casey about the still healing part. She was still healing from the incident. Mentally mostly. She had never seen that many people die or get injured so fast. The closest, would be Quidditch and that was nothing near.
"Agreed, no one should be able to get away with something that terrible! And I can't believe anyone would want to do that to us! What did we ever do to them??" she exclaimed. She couldn't believe how evil people could be. Maybe she just didn't know the world that well. She hadn't been exposed to the harshness and this had just been a terrible reality check.
"Nonetheless we need to take revenge. Hopefully we'll be able to do something to help. I HATE standing here not doing anything." she said glancing around making sure that nothing bad was happening as she was speaking, "I guess you could say I'm reckless..." She sighed. Reckless would be right. Although, she didn't care. She would protect her family and friends. Even her annoying little brother.
As she talked with Casey she realized that he had been a part of her water-racing team during summer camp. "Hey! You were a part of Team 5 right? During summer camp for water racing?" she asked. She couldn't believe she had forgotten that. Oh well. At least she had remembered it now.

After the horrors of a few days prior, Aurélie would've thought that the ball would be a needed break. She'd mostly enjoyed the previous Hogwarts events, though she had to admit, her favourite so far was definitely the summer camp that they'd hosted in London. But tonight, something about the girl was just a waiting to be set off. Unfortunately for her date, Peter seemed to be that thing tonight.
As two hands-- warm, large hands-- were placed on the French girl's shoulders, she felt herself jump as she heard the familiar voice go, "Boo!" It was only instinct and Aurélie's die-hard self-preservation mode that stopped the girl from screaming aloud.
Her jump took her a step away from her "attacker" and she whirled around to find Peter standing there. He looked great in all white, with a cute little black and white bow tie to top off the vintage look. He looked just the slightest bit nervous, which mirrored Aurélie's insides, though she wouldn't ever show it on her own face.
In true Aurélie fashion, the small girl's hands were on her hips, a leg jutting out. It didn't matter that her dress was fancy and that she wore flats and a bun, not to Aurélie. If she wanted to be angry, then she would show it. Even in the middle of a ball.
"Peter! You scared me." Her voice raised in pitch, and she narrowed her eyes. After a moment of holding it in, she burst out into giggles, running forward to put her arms around Peter like she had a few days ago.
"You look great!" Aurélie pulled back before taking in his appearance once more. She then turned towards the crowd of gathering students. "Do you want to go meet someone? Or..." She eyed the food tables and the dance floor. "Spend time together first?"

The teen accepted Illowy's compliment with a silly bow and a tip of his hat before offering his arm. As he led the way to the dancefloor, he tried his best to avoid bumping into people, but there were so many in the hall. "Excuse us," Aaron kept saying, making sure that even if someone brushed into him, Illowy wasn't being inconvenienced. He was a gentleman, after all.
Finally they stepped onto the checkerboard pattern, where there was a lot more space to move about. With it still being early, not many couples were dancing yet. Aaron turned his full attention to the dark-haired witch on his arm now. The music playing was slower at the moment, so with her permission, he placed a hand on her waist and the other hand held hers. He had been to many a Hogwarts dance by now, and he had plenty of dancing experience. He was well-versed in a simple waltz like the one he led now.
"I'm happy to see you, I've missed our running and our chats," he said with a genuine look in his brown eyes. "Hopefully we can find some time to run again. How've you been?"

MODERATION ROUND 1
What a spectacular manner to begin a ball: with a theft. @Delaney Collins would slip an empty bottle into her bag. One of the ball organisers, a boy [Archer] usually quiet and disregarded in underestimation was stood to the side, eyes eagerly scanning over the gala in his pride. After allowing the lady her fair share of socialisation, he would gently tap her on the shoulder, asking, 'Please, can you return the item of decor to where it belongs?'ReducioDelaney's stealth (avg. of wisdom and eva): 7

Yet a thief would have been the least of anyone's worries. While the fog might have only been a benign inconvenience or even an aesthetic addition to the atmosphere moments before, it licked at the ceiling hungrily, curling itself around the chandeliers like a curious spider, snuffing out the candles one by one as the room fell into darkness. The candles on the tables too str snuffed out by the fog's passing hand, as if they were babes coaxed into sleep. The brass wall lights flicker then thoroughly lose their illumination, falling victim of the mist's enticing invite. Once the fog drifted away from the ceiling, the intricately designs gave way to a transparent roof, casting the stars as the only source of light in the room. Shining through specifically placed bat cut-outs, illusions of the creature danced across the walls. Moonlight shone down towards the centre of the dance floor, a spotlight to anyone who would like to find themselves under it. Perhaps such a scene would be the cause of protest, with students wondering under whose incompetence it was that even the barest of lighting could not have been provided. Then again, they forget today was no usual party.
The music quieted and, in a 50s announcer's voice, the students would hear the following lines of T. S. Elliot's poem, 'I said to my soul, be still and wait without hope-' A pause followed the first line, as if beckoning for the attendees not to panic or leave. '-for hope would be hope for the wrong thing; wait without love, for love would be love of the wrong thing; there is yet faith, but the faith and the love are all in the waiting.' Those familiar with the author would derive a connection to the final line of the poem, but for those who are not, the voice did not do them the benefit of continuing, leaving a suspense upon the room. The bats increase their tempo in their spectacle, as the music did too in both volume and speed, and one may argue, that only then, had the event truly begun.

| ••••••••• | ••••••• 𝕿 he dark circles beneath her eyes were an ode to the nightlong awakenings Elena must have had endured for the sake of her education, each one a grueling testament to the visions of unspoken pressures that flittered through Sanguinius's mind. They whispered of long lethargic hours spent hunched over volumes with only a conflagrant candle to work for as a light source, pouring over wax-dripped notes, and wrestling with the assignments the professors seemed keen to multiply with every passing day. At least, that's what Sanguinius thought. He couldn't find any other reason as to why she would stay up to the point the skin underneath her eyelids would sink in - not enough to make her resemble a decaying corpse, she was far too transcendent to be insulted like that, but still noticeable enough for him to catalog into one of the many compartments inside of his mind palace. He had always been drawn to people who used their intellect; was that, perhaps, the reason for his fascination? To why he had been drawn to her frustratingly blinding beacon of crepuscular glow like a moth to a flame? No, there should have been a more deeper, more complex explanation, of what he was feeling. If anything, he was only eleven, and the world has never given him a single Knut all during the short years he had been alive. Of all people, he is the least deserving of anything that ties to matters of the heart. A fairytale, a happy ending, both are ideas that he has no true faith in. Sanguinius Demarest doesn't do crushes. " You can never fault a man for trying. " Sanguinius had taken a more serious note while he continued, his expression shifting to one of reflection tinged with rancor, the corners of his mouth twitching as if he was recalling a personal experience. He raised an eyebrow, to when Elena was nearly strangled by the carmine-dyed contents of her cherry punch - asphyxiation would have been a slow way to meet the light to the end of the tunnel, he dryly noted. When he became alarmed of the possibility that Elena would actually die, she stopped choking, then he resumed as if nothing had transpired at all. " Especially when that man is a Gryffindor, Clark. It takes real courage to put yourself out there. There will be outcomes that you'll come face-to-face at times, and most of them won't usually have the aimed result of what you had in mind. Then again, there's a fine line between calculated risks and reckless abandon, and for all the temerity I may exude - I lean towards the former. " " People are quicker to judge when someone doesn't fit their notion of a mold and all too ready to dismiss what they don't understand. " He exhaled sharply, a hiss of breath escaping through gritted teeth, his shoulders held taut, glancing anywhere in the ballroom to distract himself from the righteous indignation that had reared up from his gut. When the sorting hat was first placed onto his head, he had fully expected to be sorted into Hufflepuff, its reputation for honest loyalty and hard work swirling in his mind. The very thought was almost laughable now, a mere stark contrast to the fire raging in his chest. He knew that his nerves and his overly sentimental chivalry would have eventually outweighed the scales in favor of Gryffindor, after all, it was what made him a typical brawn-headed member of the house. " A full set of cards is better than having little to none. " Sanguinius grazed his thumb over the surface of his palm, chest rising to -- breathe in, breathe out. Like many other students, he had seen the papers that the owls had clutched in their talons, swooping over the heads of the other children as they tried to locate heir master or mistress. He had a sneaking suspicion that something had occurred during the arrival of the other schools - and he was right to suspect it. There were adults, kids, and more that had died during the explosion of the carriages. They were mainly half-breeds, but they were still half-blooded, like him. Sanguinius was clinging onto the notion that he was a pureblood, like the rest of the Demarest's, but if his appearance was a variable in the equation of blood purity, then he couldn't shake off the other feeling of being the wrong answer to the question either. Recessive DNA, as Renatus, Renato, his father -- fuck, he didn't care anymore -- often liked to claim. The words Just entertain me on this. hung in the air, it was up to Elena if she would take it into her grasp. And she did. With a renewed glint in her eye, she considered his poorly-landed assumption inadequate in her view of love, and she called him “sunshine". A nickname that he, personally, wouldn't personally associate with his personality, which felt more like a Shakespearian tragedy, full of dramatic turns and poignant heartaches, rather than the cheerfulness and warmth suggested by the name. " Sunshine, really? " " Now, we're reducing to name-calling. Unfortunately for you, I won't go down to your level. " Oh, that was a good one. She was, like, what? 4'4? " Your name stays, Clark. " One time, he had came across one of the author's books in the library of Crown's Peak and had been forever entranced by the plays - it was one of the scarce but many Muggle components that was approved by the late matriarch. Not that it was the Muggle part that had caught his eye, he was on equal grounds with them. It was the comedic misfortunes that the books specifically catered to that had stroked his interest. " Academic and resourceful, " His laugh slipped out, a corrosive, caustic burst that curled and twisted like the thick mist that had desperately lapped at the air inches above the floor before it began to gradually climb. " You would be the shining trophy of many Ravenclaw parents, had you been born to another. Displayed in a glass enclosure of a museum. Speaking of, where are you from? Clark is a common surname to see, but I have a feeling that there's more to your own page. " He should take a leaf out of her own page while he was at it. Balance was what he had mastered in his sword fighting practices, not the outside of it. His school experience was one of shuffled cards, never knowing which one he would get for a royal flush. " Nothing. I just can't stand it when the game strays beyond from the boundaries of the hunt. That fox would have done some good being chased, though, I'm aware that most people don't have the taste nor spirit for it. Would you? Taking part, I mean. " Sanguinius had decided to ignore her probing for public displays of... affection altogether. Instead, he focused on the topic of the Whispers of the Dark affair to hang between them, letting the details of the activity create a barrier against the fifth year couple. He would not be divulging on his, probably, offensive opinion of what lovers decided to show to the public eye, he himself was not an overtly affectionate person. Pray, Merlin, if Sanguinius decided to do a turn-around. He gauged out her expression for any tell-tale signs of physical repulsion to the change of conversation, and when he had not, he waved his hand vaguely. " Chasing a defenseless animal just for the primal thrill, the satisfaction gained from a kill after you stuffed it full with cotton to display your ruthlessness proudly. There are those who use hunting as a way to connect to our instincts that have been long buried and those for the sick pleasure of it. " " I wonder where you lie on the spectrum, Clark. Just know that, if you're up against me, you'll need more of that good-natured Ravenclaw wit. It's all in good fun, of course. But I do intend to win. " That smug grin was plastered onto his features again, dimples residing at the corners of it as he tilted his head. Then his vision turned to black, engulfed by the fog that had suddenly become a smoldering veil of density, it thickened even further, heavy with an unsettling stillness that made it difficult to breathe. Every sound felt muffled, and just as he was about to reach for his wand, the sight of Elena illuminated solely by the canvas of stars above them had cut through the haze. She stood before him, her dress that was coincidentally the same color as his suit, was now rendered a pitch black - like an endless void that seemed to absorb the very constellations that was around her. Yet, she was far from that at the same time. " Oh, perfect. " He blinked at her, plucking the drink right out of her unwilling hand before she could even get a word or protest in. Taking her hand in his, casually speaking, " Do you dance? " |

More lately balls and Gala's had become a thing of the past for Percival. He was picky with the events he attended as Gray always found them to have the same repeated ending, all out chaos. This event however had interested Percival since its announcement, not only from the fact it was Halloween but from recent events that required his attendance. Even so, the Slytherin chose not to dress up and make a fool of himself as some other students had. Instead, he kept to the smart black sweater that was always acceptable.
If anyone had a problem, that was going to be their issue.
Walking into the ball with two hands in his pockets, Cormac his ever loyal yet stubborn cat sat on his shoulder and scanned the room along with his master. So far no one had burned down the hall which was a good sign, but due to being slightly late, it was already quite packed in here. As he looked toward the back, he did spot someone who was unmistakable, along with someone he hoped wouldn't be here at all. One was Winnie Harper, and the other was Mathias. Their love story had always given him question marks but the way he was leaning into her ear made him think he didn't know the meaning of personal space.
Releasing a small sigh, Gray began to walk straight to the pair in question through the crowd. As he carefully weaved in and out, he could have sworn a fox darted next to his feet and disappeared into the crowd with something gripped in its teeth. That was something he'd need to worry about later because when he got only a few steps away Evelynn decided to poke her nose into the chat as well "Of course she's here..." the teen thought to himself when he came to a stop just behind Winnie.
"What's going on here?" Gray said at first in a calm yet authoritative tone "And what's wrong with you Winnie, you look out of sorts... " Percival explained while his and Cormac's cold gaze settled on Mathias "Let me guess, it's something to do with you right?" If it was someone else then Gray would have been very surprised. Mathias always acted strange, and he was confident it always made a mark on Winnie's bubbly personality.
Finally, he'd turn to Evelynn, an individual he wasn't on the best of terms with
"Are my thoughts correct, or are you going to say something snarky to make things worse?"

Getting Chatty with Amber Frost Hart @Reyna Evergreen
Mentioning: Miles Thatcher @Simon Kincaid
Casey more or less came at peace with himself when it was more than likely he'd be subjected to hear a few tales of love at this Ball. Hearing Amber talk about Miles like that made him smirk over the fact she could still get excited after the cluster-crap that happened in Hogsmeade... But also felt incredibly thankful inside that no girl saw him in that way. Not yet. And pray tell that it would be a long while before he would have to put up with any overexcited girls who happen to be friends that would talk about him in that manner.
At the same time, that was also coming from the mindset of a boy who knew crap about feelings in the first place. He was still on the path to acknowledging and opening up his own after swimming in grief for a year.
"I uh... Got this friend at Hogwarts, I guess. She's nice. Pretty much the only person who could put up with me... Well, so long as y'all have a good time by the night's end, regardless of how long we're waitin' for our heckin' dates..."
At some point it must've clicked to Amber that they were on the same team for the Water Race a while's back, evident when Casey was suddenly questioned on it.
"Yeah, I was... Sorry I bagged us fourth place in the end."
He did try to tell them. Paddle boarding was not his thing. It never was his thing to begin with, not when it was the first time he had actually done the sport ever in his life. Oh well. He may not to have been able to throw things at targets like he had hoped with the water balloon task, but that didn't stop him from throwing juggling balls and various other hand manipulation tools in his spare time constantly.
However, the events from Hogsmeade quickly re-dominated the discussion and Casey found himself swiftly agreeing with Amber on the notion of revenge. Sure, it may not have been rational thinking, but with the weight of everything that had just gone on, Casey wanted answers.
"Ditto, lass. Nothin' but a cowardly assault back with what happened. And of course Headmaster Plott is nowhere to be seen... Putting it lightly, it annoys the crap outta me."

Gala of Mysteries

As the fellow lion spoke, her eyes darted back to the older boy who had caught her attention earlier, her instincts told her that she could not trust him despite her initial interest in him, with Aodhan's lighthearted humour, Meiyu attempted to stifle a giggle due to his humorous speech, she pondered if it was due to the fact she was able to identify him by name. It was something that came with years of training through frequent pretentious reminders from her family, who had stressed the significance of being well acquainted with others, hence the faux red head was able to identify faces with names, which she had to thank the Sorting Ceremony for since without the old battered hat not shouting out the names of her peers, she would have struggled given her reserved nature.
With the boy continuing to speak in response to her prior question, her eyes widened as though she was a deer caught in headlights at the suggestion to go up to the older boy, something she would not be caught dead doing after their previous encounter. "I was not inquiring about him because of how he is dressed, just a familiar face I've seen around." Meiyu spoke tactically, despite sharing similarities with the fellow lion - mostly their house status, the sudden question of what felt like an accusation directing her to something she had not chosen to explore had raised her guards, particularly towards the boy she was current conversing with. Argumentatively, she knew the his inquisition was not his fault, she had pestered him on a person he was unfamiliar with. Her eyes widening once again upon the realisation he had been pointing at the boy in question, making it clearer to her that he was not familiar with etiquette, perhaps she would have to bring Aodhan home for the summer and subject him to her uncle Alaric's gruesomely tedious etiquette lessons, which he would not last a day doing so.
In a blink of an eye, the pair were interrupted by what appeared to be another first year rushing past them, who happened to be the girl Meiyu had noticed upon her arrival to the ball. Her sullen expression plastered with hurt, and judging by how eager to leave the girl had appeared, Meiyu's brow instinctively raised in question to what would have led the girl to behave in such manner. In her honest opinion, the girl appeared dramatic, seeking attention, though a small motion of her head revealed the perpetrators. A blonde lion and a blonde raven. Had Meiyu been in a similar predicament, her heart would have mourned for the young girl, yet disputably the eldest Xiang had yet to experience such infatuation that would leave her in an act of social suicide.
"Sorry, but my sherlock senses are downright tingling. I gotta check that out." The remark almost made Meiyu smile, there was something fascinating in the way the young lion spoke, as though he had not a care in the world, no expectations to fulfil a legacy that he was unsure he could fulfil, much different to the predicament she was in and the act of rebellion she attempted to showcase in retaliation. Her eyes trailed Aodhan's movements, noticing he had stopped the young girl, accompanied by a blonde porcelain doll who had taken human form. An eerie fog had emerged resulting in Meiyu almost stumbling at a sudden collision with another student. "Sorry." A voice had spoken, bringing Meiyu out of her thoughts, until a lantern illuminating a bright light right into her delicate face, almost blinding her in the brief moment the fog occupied the room. "Are you that incapable of balancing yourself, in those...shoes?" She questioned the intruder of her personal space, scoffing distastefully of the girls choice of footwear, which had become clear to Meiyu, was inadequate if one simply could not maintain balance. The red head was evidently irritated, the ball was no where near the standards the Xiang had anticipated it to be, considering the whispers of anticipation she had heard prior to the event which had prompted her attendance to begin with.
Marching away, the lioness made her way to the trio who had begun questioning the escapee, joining their small interrogation session, wincing at the escapees strong accent which was almost infuriating to listen to. "Is someone upset that the Demarest boy is here with another?" She questioned, her brow intuitively raising at the girl and those surrounding her, with a quick peek to the preoccupied lion who was now a step away from out-dated chivalrous act of asking for a dance. "You will not last a second here if you get upset so easily. Ask him for a dance if you want one. I'm sure that blonde can wait her turn." Meiyu spewed dangerously, perhaps this would make the ball a lot more interesting. Almighty a part of her did have some hope the young girl would make a conscious effort towards the boy she had grown fond of, with the latter still being bitter she had outshined her a few weeks ago in the courtyard, where she had truly forgotten her manners in a moment of rage.
