An eyebrow raised when Lea learned who she was moderating the duel for- it wasn't often that she got to see her fellow captains on the piste. They had done well in their roles, keeping track of everything and helping teach their teams, but how well did they do on the piste themselves? And now as a contest between the two? Not to mention their teammates- Draven was a name that held a strange familiarity Lea couldn't place while Mylo was a current Prefect now taking up a place on the duelling stage. She unfortunately knew less about Cassian and Elisa, but that just meant the Hufflepuff would have to keep a closer eye on them.

The clock struck 10:30 when Lea made their entrance onto the piste, a glance towards the crowd and sides. Most knew by this point what was happening as the noise settled down, only a few conversations that stopped upon realizing the near silence. "WELCOME EVERYONE TO DAY 2 OF THE FIRST DUELLING STAGE FOR THIS YEAR!" She was going to lose her voice quick and there were certainly amplifying spells that would make more sense, but the Fifth Year opted for the traditional route as she motioned an arm towards the Ravenclaw side. "Ready to compete for Ravenclaw, we have: Cassian Clarke, Jessamine Hemlock, and Mylo Atkins!" A pause to let the applause die down- House spirit was strong- before her other arm extended to the Slytherin side. "Contesting against Slytherin! Represented by Draven Mirador, Pyxis Hellebore, Elisa Wagner!" Determining which side had the loudest roar over their arrival was not something Lea could confidently ascertain, but her ears certainly felt both. With a small laugh, the Hufflepuff moved to address the duellists directly.

"I hope you all know the rules at this point, but just in case-" She would rattle off the requirements, assuming none would actually try to attack their teammates or go across the center of the piste among other general information. They might be younger, but they knew. "And with that- I wish you both luck and may the best team win... READY, SET, DUEL!"

"All will be fine." Mylo had to tell themselves that a few times before they had even entered the duelling room. This was their first official duel, and even then it was only their second duel ever, so the nerves were quite prominent.

But they'd signed up, and they'd been assigned a team, so there was no way that he was going to back down now and leave their team stranded a person down. Taking a deep breath they walked into the room, immediately going over to their teammates. Greeting them and wishing everyone a good game.

Not exactly sure what to expect they just made their way onto the podium with the rest of the duellists, taking deep breaths and remembering what they did during his mock duel with Rose, hoping that it would be somewhat similar to that, but highly doubting it. Having an audience also wasn't exactly helping the nerves, but it couldn't be helped.

"It will be fine" They thought, getting ready for the chaos that were expecting the match to be.

The first stage of the new dueling championship had begun. Cassian had a good feeling about it. Having won the championship last year, the Ravenclaw team was ready for a new year. Cassian had new teammates this year: Jess, the dueling team co-captain, and Mylo; Cassian didn’t know them very well, but was excited to duel alongside them.
As for the moderator and opposing team, the only one Cassian recognized was Pyxis, who had been one of his duel moderators last year. Cassian saluted the Slytherin team captain with his wand, flashing him a smile. He’d never seen Pyxis duel before, but was looking forward to it; he was sure he was one of the best.
As their names were called, the Ravenclaw team stepped forward. Cassian, perceptive and empathetic, felt that Mylo seemed a bit nervous. They were taking deep breaths and Cassian completely understood how they felt. He’d been extremely nervous for his first duel too. Reaching out to his teammates, Cassian sent calming vibes, hoping to help them both feel better. The duel was about to begin.

By all means, this day should have been more nerve-wracking for Jessamine. She was competing against her fellow captain, and in the presence of another captain. Any normal person might’ve been collapsed from the nerves by now, but Jessamine ate shame for breakfast. Yesterday's task of refereeing was more difficult than this and it didn’t matter if today was a win or a loss. Standing proudly on the piste and letting her magic loose on the opposing team was more important to her. As well as her personal goal of seeing Pixie squirm.

Speaking of the snake, Jessamine waggled her fingers at him while assessing his team. One was an upperclassman she didn’t know and the other was a classmate of her, Pixie, and Mylo. She knew squat about their magical abilities, but the same couldn’t be said for Pixie as they’d been running spellcasting drills with each other since joining their respective teams as captains. Flashing a wink and a smile at Cassian and Mylo, Jessamine readied her wand for battle.

Elisa stood in the duelling room, wand at the ready, looking around nervously at the others. This is it! My first official duel!

In a small whisper, she murmured a shy 'good luck' at her teammates, and stood upright, ready for the duel. She had waited for a whole year for this moment, and she was ready.

Draven's skin itched. He couldn't quite get his nails deep enough, couldn't reach the annoying feeling sitting just underneath the surface. His wand, held loosely in one hand, seemed to have gotten heavier in the past year. Its weight was comforting, something to keep him grounded as he walked forward, surveying his opponents. None of them had looked in his direction just yet, and he was sort of grateful for it. Drab black clothes, simple working jeans and a turtleneck. He'd taken to wearing his uniform... - rather, he'd taken to wearing the thrifted black trenchcoat he'd found at the back of a clearance bin in a Salvation Army Thriftstore. The only nice thing was the scarf, long and silver-green, with his house logo stitched on it.

Picking a spot on the podium to stand, not too far but not uncomfortably close to his teammates, Draven closed his eyes. The match would be starting once everyone got in position, but Pyx and Elisa had yet to make their way to the stage. He felt them making their way towards him. They were both smaller than him, in fact- everyone in the room was, and Draven didn't like the slimy feeling that accompanied that realization. Aside from their moderator, he was the oldest by far, towering one head above the other students.

Draven rolled his shoulders in, haunching a little. He'd shot up again over the summer, getting taller and dangerously skinnier. His ribs were visible now, his veins too. Streaking the boy's amber skin in shades of blue and green, they littered the back of his hands and wrists, the insides of his elbows and knees. He covered them up best he could, covered up his scrawniness. The way his limbs looked like twigs, breakable and fragile. A mask shielded his face, covering his nose and mouth. Really, the only bit of exposed skin on the boy were his eyes, sunken deep in his head and marred by dark circles.

In short, Mirador looked like a corpse swaddled in fabric. Perhaps it was foreshadowing the outcome of the duel.

Or perhaps he just really, really needed to hit the gym.

Tracing his pointer finger down the list of duellists, Pyxis' eyes widened when it reached his name. Not only was he going to be duelling in the presence of another Hufflepuff upperclassman that he held in high regard, but he'd be standing across from another captain too. Thankfully, the novelty of the word captain wore off, and a smile played on his lips. Draven was on his team again and their success rate against the Ravenclaws stood at a humble 100%. Is it too much to ask for a repeat? He petitioned to whatever overlord was watching over him in that moment.

Approaching the piste, Pyxis noted that Draven was wearing a mask over his mouth and wondered if he should have brewed some Pepperup Potions in preparation for their duel. He hopped onto the piste, sent a cordial nod Elisa's way and matched the sass of Jessamine's wave, waggling his fingers right back at her. He and the Ravenclaw had trained extensively together and now he knew exactly what made her tick. Just as she knew the same about him. At least that evened the playing field somewhat. But none of that would matter if Draven collapsed before the duel even started.

"Er, you okay, buddy?" he whispered to his partner, leaning across the respectable gap between them while holding up his wand, readying to cast.

The strategy before this duel was clear the moment in started as each side had a specific targeted opponent, only two wands straying from the pack. Elisa's wand remained pointed towards the ground- whether it was from the nerves or she was already aware of her targeted status Lea didn't know, but keeping eyes on others' spells rather than her own would prove very beneficial in the coming moments. Cassian would be the other outlier, aiming towards the oldest of the Slytherins rather than the main opponent.

Between the Ravenclaws against Elisa, Mylo was the first to act, nerves getting a quicker start in exchange for some of the precision required in accuracy. Flipendo seemed a well-practiced cast, the jinx easily sparking to life before jolting across the piste, yet the distance between spell and Elisa was far too much, not when she anticipated being hit. It would whizz past, an eruption of light just past the Slytherin as the next wand lit up. It would be Jessamine's, the sparks far brighter as it seemed those few extra moments had been enough to put all of her attention into the spell. Yet she too struggled in the aim department, the incentive of not getting hit seeming far greater than the intent to win. Flipendo was a painful spell to get hit by.

Cassian was the second targeted person, although he did not act the part like the Slytherin girl had. Two Knockback Jinxes flew in his direction, the movements nearly identical between Pyxis and Draven although one with a lot more ease. Pyxis faced the same issue as the Ravenclaws- namely aiming as the spell shot off in one direction with Cassian towards the other. It would be of help though, Draven able to pinpoint the Ravenclaw down with a direct bolt, one Cassian's temporary distractedness stood no chance against. The spell was a punch to the chest, sending the Ravenclaw stumbling back yet keeping upright. It was the first strike although not with its repercussions. For while Draven aimed at Cassian, Cassian too aimed at Draven.

Matching Ravenclaw's wit, Cassian opted for an Obscuro as he kept to spells his wand seemed more 'interested' in. His own casting was a little wobbly from the new aching sensation of pain but it would be enough, far more focus on hitting rather than spellcasting as was the unfortunate mistake of his teammates. The change in strategy worked, Draven unable to slide out of the way fast enough after casting his own spell. The corpse needed even more fabric, now wrapped around the eyes. It made an interesting start, Lea casting a glance between the six as she awaited their next move.

Elisa stood at the ready, prepared for whatever would come her way. Spells came firing quicker than ever, two of which were aimed at her. Elisa was, however, quite prepared for any attacks, her being the most inexperienced duellist on the team.

She dodged the spells, twirling towards the side at the first one and jumping back at the second. Even though she successfully dodged the attacks, it was not by much, and her heart hammered fiercely in her chest.

C'mon, you got it!, she told herself, eyes still wide for anything other that might come her way.
