Below are some books that evoke themes or motifs from Maisie’s story. If you have the opportunity to read them—which I hope you do!—I think you will enjoy them.

PRIDE AND PREDJUDICE Jane Austen At school, Maisie has been exposed to students who come from a much more privileged background than she—and she has also come to know and take issue with their arrogance. She also shares personality traits like independence and wit with the protagonist, Jane Bennet.

DAVID COPPERFIELD Charles Dickens A classic Bildungsroman, David Copperfield traces a working class boy’s adolescence. The story emphasizes growth and change, as well as the working class struggle. It is also known for blending the comic and tragic—tone common in Maisie’s point of view.

WICKED Gregory Maguire In another world filled with magic, Maisie’s character would be likened to Glinda the Good. They share a playfulness, curious fashion sense, and a certain penchant for pink. And perhaps most important, Maisie and Glinda deeply value friendship even if becomes strained.

LANARK Alisdair Gray Straddled between realism and fantasy, Lanark depicts a dystopian Glasgow through surrealism, illustration and footnotes. Maisie, too, straddles two worlds: muggle and magical. And like the book itself, Maisie is both experimental and creative.

TRAINSPOTTING Irvine Welsh Although the book is set in Edinburgh, most of the corresponding movie was filmed in Glasgow. And since then, the two have been culturally linked. And Maisie is Glasgow. She is born from its roughness, and no other contemporary title encapsulates that urban working-class struggle better.
