SPECTATOR THREAD FOR BROOM RACING
Slytherin vs Ravenclaw - Fall 2024
Date: October 19, 2024
Time: 2pm
Weather: crisp, cold Scottish winds but plenty of sun
It was a big day for the broom racers, especially Della. After finishing her match in the morning, she was off to referee the second one—followed by what would probably be a frantic tornado of hair and makeup and hopefully showering as she got ready for tonight's ball. The racers sitting on the starting line would mostly likely be feeling similarly, except they now had the extra pressure of actually having to race.

If they thought tonight's race to glitz and glamour would be scary, then the racers needed to look at the track ahead of them. A gambit of ghoulish creatures and obstacles awaited, including one hidden boggart. Halloween was here early, and Della hoped there wouldn't be too much screaming this afternoon.

She circled over the track, making sure everything was in its place, while the players got into their places on the starting line. There were some new faces on the course, including Astra Norrick for the snakes, and Dealla Prince and Brookline Quinn for the eagles. Della silently wished them luck and hoped this wasn't a race that would scare them away from the sport.

Amplifying on her voice for the crowd, "Racers, on your marks! Make this a good clean race. Everyone should make it to the end with their hair intact—there's a ball tonight and we want to look our best! And most of all, try to have fun!"

Aly Salinger was no stranger to Hogwarts' sports scene, whether as an audience member for duelling to watch her beloved moon Pericles represent the eagles or as a teammate herself when it came to the Quidditch pitch, no matter how many games she'd lost. Despite all that, admittedly she had never touched broom-racing, not even as a spectator. However, that had all changed with the addition of her best mate, Dee, onto Ravenclaw's team.

Dee had come to watch Aly on the Quidditch pitch plenty a time, but even after all those years Dee had spent duelling - as a member or as a captain - Aly had never quite gotten to watch her on the piste. Whether it was blamed on her own busy schedule, her absence from Hogwarts, or her mother's insistence that duelling was far too violent to spectate, Aly knew deep down that she could have tried harder to support Dee - and, thus, had made a strong effort to visit her best mate for her first ever broom race as a Race-venclaw, or whatever they called themselves. Sure, there was a gala tonight that they'd have to get ready for eventually, but that could wait until later in the evening. Aly was already dreaming of their usual pre-dance rituals (mainly, of Aly going after Dee with a cosmetics brush or tube of lipstick and only sometimes being physically fought off by her dark-haired bunkmate), but for now, she settled into the wooden bleachers near the broom racing track.

Tucking one hand into the warm pocket of her light blue cardigan, she waved a handmade Ravenclaw flag with the other and shouted out to get her best mate's attention as the racers took to their starting marks. "Woooo! Go Dee! Show 'em how it's done!"

She'd rolled up the Hufflepuff sign from this morning and placed it into her satchel. There wasn't too much point heading all the way back to the castle to switch things out. To be honest, she hadn't completely expected to stay for the afternoon race. But the morning had been pleasant so she may as well see what the Ravenclaw broom racing team was capable of.

In the time in between, she'd gone for a little walk. Upon coming back, she'd not only put away the Hufflepuff sign, but swapped it for her trusty Ravenclaw scarf.

Arriving back in the spectator area, Maisie looked around for a good seat. She'd lucked out this morning, but that be as true now. Thankfully, there was room, but so far no one she knew. Eventually, she was able to make out a light blue cardigan on an older girl who held a Ravenclaw flag in her hand. Maisie was pretty sure she'd seen her around the common room at some point and she seemed enthusiastic, if nothing else. That alone was enough to get Maisie to approach her, rather than sitting on her own.

Shuffling over, she addressed her, "Do you mind if I sit here too? Looks like we're on the same the same team." With her thumb and index finger, she tugged on her house scarf gently.

As she settled in, she looked up at the older girl, who seemed by virtue of her age alone, far more versed in the way of broom racing and all things Hogwarts. "I saw my first race this morning and it all went by so fast. Is there anything I should be looking out for—aside from, obviously, who's in first?" It wasn't an idle question. Maisie genuinely wanted to get to know and learn all the sports at the school. Maybe one day, she could do more than watch. She wanted to be ready for that moment.

Avis looked out over the course with an excited grin. She'd never been to any Hogwarts sports match in her short career as a first year student and was looking forward to experiencing the upcoming broom race against Slytherin. Coming from a long line of Eagles, she'd always been a bit biased, even before the Sorting Hat announced her as a Ravenclaw in the Great Hall the month before but, bias aside, she was really looking forward to seeing what kind of obstacles the racers would face. Avis had heard a circulating rumor that a boggart was supposed to pop up at some point.

Wrapping her arms around herself as the crisp Scottish breeze made itself apparent,
Avis walked towards the stands, hoping to find a familiar face to sit next to. Unfortunately, it seemed none of her acquaintances had made it to the race, most likely because of the ball later that evening and as Avis stood deciding where to sit, a clear voice rang out over the course.

"Racers, on your marks! Make this a good clean race. Everyone should make it to the end with their hair intact—there's a ball tonight and we want to look our best! And most of all, try to have fun!" the Gryffindor referee announced. Bollocks. She'd better find a seat and quick.

Avis slid into the first open seat she could spot and was happy to find that she'd landed next to some fellow Ravenclaws. An older girl waving a blue flag was cheering for someone on the Eagles team and sat next to her was another student in a Ravenclaw scarf. The younger girl was saying something as Avis took a seat a few feet away from the two, not wanting to impose.

"-Is there anything I should be looking out for—aside from, obviously, who's in first?" the younger girl was saying and Avis, despite herself, leaned in slightly for the answer.

The Slytherin broom racing teams "curse" was decently well known knowledge. Cass had learned about it through the headliner article themself, but it was obvious to anyone who had turned up to a few of their races. The Slytherin team was no joke. And yet they had never won a match. Then again, Cass had never turned up to cheer for them before. Surely this time, this was their game to win. They had an absolutely awesome team without a doubt, and the weather was perfect. Not that they really knew enough about broom racing to judge anything about it. But they would learn! That was one of the reasons why they were here. That, and their absolutely overflowing house pride. Slytherin was the best, no questions asked. But now that they were here, they realised that they didn't recognise one single familiar face to sit with. They were slightly late to the party after all.

By the time that they had finally made it out of the Slytherin dorms, this time with a winter scarf bearing the Slytherin colours on it to use as a makeshift banner because they got distracted again when trying to paint one, most of the racers were already out on the field. When they spotted some familiar faces among the team, they cheered as they jogged over to the stands. There was Colin @Colin McCoire, an older year that they recognised from that one time they had refereed a duel for him and the infamous game of falling rocks and cauldrons (they still couldn't actually pronounce the name). They hadn't known he was a broom racer! That would be why he was so good at almost setting them on fire. Awesome! Alongside him was another cre... that game player with fiery red hair that they didn't quite know the name of @Astra Norick, but she deserved a cheer anyway.

They needed to get to the stands and pick a place to sit quick, before they missed the action. Still no one that they knew had magically appeared from nowhere in the time it took them to walk over there, but that didn't put them off. They would just be making some new friends today. It wasn't optional for the other people involved. Scanning the crowds, they picked a seat next to a group of girls dressed in blue @Aly Salinger@Maisie Gemmell@Avis Greymond for reasons unknown to man. The fact that all their new volunteered friends were supporting another house was completely ignored by them. "HI" they sort of screamed to be heard over the roars from the crowd "THIS IS MY SEAT NOW". Perhaps not the most graceful and elegant methods of introduction, but one that apparently Cass liked.

There were quite a few Hogwarts kids in the stands waiting for the afternoon race to begin. Cursa sat down next to one wearing what he thought must be Slytherin gear. Maybe even one of Colin's classmates. Most of the other kids he thought must be Ravenclaw supporters, as they wore different colours. He knew that much about Hogwarts from Colin's brothers anyway.

Cursa gave the Slytherin kid a quick look. "That white haired idiot down there. The one shit talking the Ravenclaw team. Is he a friend of yours?" Cursa asked. "Is it true they've never won a single race? That must suck," he added, loud enough for the Ravenclaws to hear as well. He watched as the teams got themselves into position. Cursa smirked when the Ravenclaw captain shot back that she'd be at the ball before the Slytherin team even finished the race.

Perhaps it was just one Slytherin racer in particular who sucked enough to bring the whole team down?

As the time for the race drew closer, Cursa had to admit he was becoming excited again. He had no great love for Colin and felt no need to cheer for his team. Yet, this morning's race gave him pause to think. The Ravenclaws had the better record and being a Horned Serpent himself, he felt more at home cheering that team on. But on the other hand, Colin was blood. And at last, the referee called for the race to begin!
Werewolves: let me get a muzzle for that!

Not even one week prior, Madhup had been hauling the bodies of small children through a smoke-strangled field. The days since were spent uncharacteristically listless, showing low appetite and- more alarming yet- little desire to socialize. Today, he was making up for lost time. While he wasn't used to being in the stands, the Durmstrang player would throw himself at spectating with the same energy he brought to his games: belligerent spectacle. "DEE!" Mad howled her name from the crowd, cupping his mouth and waving an arm overhead in an attempt to snag her attention. If Dee intended to distract Madhup, she was already doing a fine job of it. Even at a distance he recognized her high ponytail, valiant armor, and the Starsweeper XXI in hand. He was more than happy to forget the trauma for awhile in favor of celebrating her first game. As soon as it more or less looked like her head had turned in their direction, her fan unceremoniously tore off his jacket.

There was good reason as to why he'd nearly missed kickoff. He was wearing a Ravenclaw flag as a cape which, on closer inspection, appeared to be a tapestry stolen from the Small Hall. Durmstrang's star blatcher couldn't recall waving any banner besides Durmstrang's, though he was plenty enthusiastic about this exception. Her gala date had gone so far as to paint his immaculate chest and abdomen with a blue letter D lined in glittering bronze. "CAVE THEIR HEADS, DEE PRINCE!" The fact that Mad was cheering for her and not all of Ravenclaw was semantics. It's not like he was the only one; the girl sitting in the next row down, who had a literal front row seat to Honningbie's homicidal roaring, had called her name too. Clearly he wasn't the only advocate of Dee superiority.

The player turned overzealous sports fan was having the time of his life. Madhup was in the middle of swinging his shirt overhead in broad circles when his star player fell from her broom, putting an abrupt end to his idea of "cheerleading". He groaned in anticipatory pain, wide eyes following her descent, only to catch a small silver lining. Dee fell with practiced grace, slowing the drop and curling up against the impact. She excelled even in misfortune. Relief surged through him once Mad saw her sit up, and he began muttering like a manic personal trainer jacked up on preworkout from the sidelines: "Beautiful, beautiful. Easy fall. Up again my girl." He absently lifted both palms as if to telepathically boost Dee back into the air. But the little gremlin that had knocked her down looked to be snarking back at her. Mad immediately went on the defensive, cupping his mouth and rambling in Russian. While few in the stands could understand what he was shouting, it was easy to assume he was spewing swears and insults, indicated by the middle fingers he was waving generously in Colin's direction. Eventually, it occurred to him that his flaming would be much more effective if only he knew who he was yelling at. The Durmstrang boy crouched in the stands, lightly patted Aly's shoulder, and quickly toned down the show with a friendly grin and polite volume. "Hey, hello. What is the name of the green ones? The snake team?" As soon as Mad had his answer, the shirtless jock extended a well-mannered "Thank you," stood tall on the bleacher again, and bellowed for audience and racers alike to hear: "BOOO. SLYTHERIN EATS NOGTAIL SHIT."

Not five seconds of peace, quiet, and solitude had passed before the stands began to flood with other supporters, speckled in both navy and emerald. Aly ignored them all, eyes trained solidly on her dark-haired best friend beneath her, who waved cheerfully up into the stands - the spectating eagle certainly hoped it was directed her way. Waggling her fingers in response, she watched Dee blow a mocking kiss at the Slytherin team and couldn't help but quirk a smile. That's how it's done, girl. Go get 'em. After Aly's team's own loss to the snakes the week before, she was feeling particularly vindictive against her green-themed opponents.

A young voice (@Maisie Gemmell) nearby startled her, and Aly looked up to see a child - no doubt a first-year, with brown hair and a blue scarf denoting her eagle loyalty - settling into the seat beside her before she could so much as agree. "Er - sure, yeah, go right ahead," the sixth-year allowed, only slightly bemused as the younger girl explained that this was her second race of the day. Her enthusiasm was contagious, and Aly couldn't help but smile, her own heart warmed. "Any friend of Ravenclaw is a friend of mine. And you're ahead of me on races - this one's my first, actually!" Leaning over, she pointed down at Dee, who had just jumped on her broom. "Here to support my best mate. That's her down there, with the dark hair in the blue. That's Dee - new to the racing team, but I've no doubt she'll slaughter them all. And I'm Aly, by the way. We're both sixth-years."

Glancing around, Aly noticed another youth in blue (@Avis Greymond) leaning in, no doubt listening in to their chatter. Before the elder could invite the younger to come closer - for if she was going to adopt one first-year with whom to watch the race, she might as well adopt them all - another younger student, this one in green (@Cass Ito), sat down and screamed that this was their seat now. Aly tried to not wrinkle her nose at the snake colours, but was perhaps not entirely successful; still, she couldn't fault a younger student who didn't know any better. "That can be your seat all you want, but just so you know, we'll be screaming super loud for Ravenclaw," she informed the Slytherin before waving the further Ravenclaw closer with a patient smile, just in case the quiet kid didn't want to sit alone.

The race was off in a matter of moments, and Aly hooted and hollered with the rest of the crowd as snakes and eagles darted across the start line. But before Dee could so much as get out of the very first unit, two Slytherins ganged up on her with powerful spells, and Aly's best mate fell hopelessly to the ground, her broom skidding into the dust nearby. Luckily, a Slytherin was equally out so quick, but that didn't make Aly any less furious; she leapt to her feet and shouted a string of curses that would have made her mother's ears light on fire. Then she remembered her present company, and she looked down around at her young would-be charges, her face turning an unpleasant shade of maroon. "Er. Disregard all that, you lot," she muttered, suddenly feeling the pressure of being a good role model. Was this what parenting was like?

Dee was on her feet, now, blowing Aly a kiss, and the spectator breathed a heavy sigh of relief. "Oh, good, you're okay," she said, settling back into her seat almost as if Dee could hear her. She hadn't been sitting one fraction of a second before a tap on her shoulder caused her to turn around; an unfamiliar boy (@Pericles Dralt as Madhup Hexum) was crouching behind her (and it was perhaps only because of his awkward position in the stands that Aly didn't immediately notice his chest detailing). Nearly jumping right back off the bench, or rather out of her skin entirely, Aly startled before listening to his question. Oh, one of the foreign students, then, with a grin as charming as his polite, accented tone. "Er... you mean Slytherin?" she asked, and no sooner had the words left her mouth did the boy stand tall upon the bench behind her. It was only now that Aly noticed the giant D on his chest, though she didn't think much of it; it could've meant Durmstrang, for all she knew. His bellowed taunt brought an uninvited chuckle to her lips, and she turned back around, clapping her hands and murmuring with an incredulous whisper, "Nogtail shit..."

People certainly could be creative.

The Russian kid had really gotten into the whole cheering squad thing! There seemed to one Ravenclaw kid he was cheering for, which Cursa felt was entirely appropriate. Anything but cheering for the Snakey Team! When he politely asked one of the Hogwarts kids who the snake team were, Cursa knew the answer. But it wasn't his place to say, as he wasn't asked. Anyway, the other kid answered, and no sooner had she done so than the Russian was standing up on his bench again, hurling invectives and flashing the middle finger against all Slytherins.

Cursa smirked.

Given that his own cousin, Colin McCoire had sent the Ravenclaw of affection spiralling earthwards a few minutes ago, he reasoned that most of that invective and all of the middle finger jabbing was likely to be aimed at one Slytherin boy in particular! Cursa was all Horned Serpent, which he had learned equated to Hogwarts Ravenclaw, so he felt no reason to cheer for any other team but Ravenclaw, family notwithstanding.

Cursa too decided to hop up onto his own bench, watching as Colin brought down another Ravenclaw racer! "COLIN MCCOIRE YOU SUCK!!!" he shouted into the cold Scottish air! "GO RAVENCLAW!! YOU CAN DO THIS!!!"

The Russian boy started shouting about nogtail shit. Cursa took up the chant, too!

"BOOO. SLYTHERIN EATS NOGTAIL SHIT!"
