This is a group thread for the errand, Tricks, Treats and Tales. Feel free to reference the errand page for any information, and feel free to owl me if you have any questions.
It was the 30th of October, and all throughout the grounds, small fire pits sent smoke into the crisp autumn air. Each pit would have a small group of four to six students that got to socialise, have sweets, make s'mores, tell scary stories... really, whatever their hearts desired. If some of them came wearing a scary costume and others came wearing a bedsheet to be a ghost, the better for them.

Ingredients for s'mores (graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolates and skewers) were laid on a small table at each fire pit. Small logs provided seating for the students, larger logs for the older students and smaller logs for the younger ones. Multicoloured leaves, the warm shades of which could be seen in the firelight, dapped the floor with colours almost like a rug. The point of it all was to be cosy, to be fun, and perhaps a night full of colours and giggles and firelight would get the job done.

To ensure everyone remained safe, and if they did burn themselves, to provide a quick healing spell, Koko, a seventh-year prefect, stood off to the side in the shadows. She was not particularly well-hidden: her light-coloured hair reflected the light easily, making it so that even as she tried not to be a distraction from the event, if she was needed, she could be swiftly located. A silver mackerel tabby sat at her feet, content with the general atmosphere around him. She could only hope that the students would enjoy this, too.
OOC: What to do.

Write at least one post of your character being present at the event. Hopefully, they are enjoying things, but some teenagers are moody.

Your total word count (all posts combined) must be at least 600 words, but you can absolutely write more than one post, or more than 600 words. Please do remember to write at least 200 words per post per site rules!

Upon completion of your 600 posts, please provide your total word count and link your thread your sign-up post in the errand thread here.

Once again, I hope you have fun! Feel free to owl me if you have any questions at all.

Avis was not wearing a costume. She hadn't worn a costume since first grade, and she did not plan to start now, instead opting for her standard uniform and a blue bandana to match the streaks in her hair. She wasn't much of a Halloween person, her family never was, but she did enjoy fires, and she had impulsively signed up for this little get-together.

She searched for a good long stick to function as a poking stick, not for actually poking the fire, she had a feeling there was some magic involved in the fire, but just to have near her, a memento of the fires her family had when she was younger. Having a fire at Hogwarts, though, seemed a little bit sweeter. It was as if the leaves were trying to give them a multicolored rug. It was all just a little bit more perfect. It would have been better if Maria or Alaina could have been there, but this was about as good as it could be without them.

Avis observed those who sat around the fire with her. They all seemed to be about the same age though, 1st years or second at most. She didn't want to be chatty-chatty, but she also didn't want to sit here for hours sulking, so she smiled a smile that only observant people would notice as fake, and gestured to herself.

"My name's Avis and I'm a first-year, Ravenclaw. I assume you all are also first years, and if you aren't I'm sorry but you look like one. I'm also a muggle-born, in case you all find that helpful." She shrugged and scanned the kids in front of her, looking at them each in turn. People who didn't know Avis would think she was glaring at them, but she was simply observing.
"Honestly I barely know what it means. Anyway, I prefer not to sit in silence for hours, so I propose an icebreaker. That's a game to meet people, by the way." Avis rolled her eyes at the need to say that out loud.
"I would've thought people would know that but I come here and people don't understand what casts are. Basically, what you do is we all go around and say our names, and then answer a random question. So. " Avis leaned forward and put her head on her hands in mock intrigue and sarcastically finished. "I am absolutely dying to know: What's the craziest out-of-context quote you've ever heard?"

| Mamori shuffled over to the fire pit, a plain bedsheet draped over him with two eyeholes cut out. It was the simplest costume he could think of — easy to throw on, and everyone, even the Muggle-born students, would instantly know he was playing the classic ghost. His pumpkin bucket, filled to the brim with candies, swung gently in his grip as he found a seat on one of the smaller logs. His dyed pink hair peeked out from under the sheet’s makeshift hood, just barely visible in the firelight.

As he sat down, he glanced around at the group gathered by the fire and realized he hadn't had any direct interactions with any of them before, though their faces were familiar from the classes they shared. He assumed, with some confidence, that everyone here was also a first-year, just like him. It didn’t really matter in the end, though — new faces meant new acquaintances, and new acquaintances meant the potential for new friendships, and that was the exciting part of nights like these.

The girl sitting next to him, Avis, had started the conversation, speaking in a direct and no-nonsense manner. Mamori couldn't help but notice that she wasn’t wearing a costume but her Ravenclaw robe, and instantly pegged her as the studious type — maybe a bit quick-tempered and not all that fond of small talk. Still, she had broken the ice for the group, and for that, he was thankful.

“Thanks for leading us off, Avis,” he said with a smile under his sheet, hoping to ease the slight stiffness in the air. “I’m Mamori, first-year, Hufflepuff. And for your question…” He paused for a moment, a playful grin tugging at his lips. “Once, someone said, ‘You can’t make food out of books, but if you could, I bet Potions textbooks would taste awful.’”

He let out a small laugh before adding, “Oh, and before we move on — anyone want some candy?” He lifted his pumpkin bucket, shaking it slightly for emphasis. “I’ve got a lot to share.”

Turning to the person sitting next to him, he added, “So, what’s your favorite Halloween treat? Sweets or otherwise?”

Alyss came in the most ironic costume she could possibly think of: as a witch. She’d found the stereotypical crooked witch hat, and wore a random black cloak she’d found buttoned all the way up. Of course, with her joyful attitude and happy expression, she clearly did not fit the mold for the scary witch the talk about in muggle stories; but she was okay with that.

Although they were a full month- almost two- into the school year, it was clear that Alyss knew none of the people next to her. Had she maybe possibly seen a few in passing? Probably. Did she remember? Not quite. And something that Alyss had learned so far was to not be the first to talk, because it usually ended up in her having verbal diarrhea, stating everything that came to mind.

This was why she was so relieved when another girl began the conversation. Her name was Avis, and she was a first year, similar to Alyss. The Slytherin chucked at Avis’s comment on how they all looked like first years, and Alyss nodded along, allowing Avis to finish as she explained what an icebreaker was, and telling them how some people didn’t now what they were.

This shocked Alyss, but it wasn’t as if she had much experience with icebreakers, having never gone to a real school, nor being a part of large gathering where she would feel the need to really introduce herself.

Alyss shifted her gaze to yet another first year- Mamori, a Hufflepuff. He seemed very confident and relaxed as he introduced himself, something Alyss envied. She was constantly reassessing what she did in the past, though never really changing up her behavior.

It was then that she heard the mention of candy, and her entire body perked up. Of course, she had listened to Mamori’s quote as well, but she had kind of let that filter out of her brain after giving a polite laugh in response.

“I love chocolate!” Alyss replied immediately, before realizing she went the wrong way about this. “Sorry, I should introduce myself first, huh? Haha.” She chuckled, trying to act like she wasn’t as nervous. When she first interacted with people, she was often more on edge, warming up to and becoming more talkative that longer they were together.

“I’m Alyss, first year Slytherin. That’s spelled A-L-Y-S-S, by the way.” she grinned at the others, wondering if any of the others in their group were a snake as well, or if it was just her. “The oddest out of context quote would probably be…” Alyss trailed off for a second, thinking. What was odd, but not overly weird or dramatic? “Oh! Once my grandpa said ‘I don’t like cheese puffs, I need the crunchies!’ It was really funny. Apparently he thinks they need to have more of a crunch?” Alyss grinned, eyes slowly turning away from the people around the fire and towards the darkened sky as she remembered the moment.

She was happy. The crackling fire, the makings of s’mores, silly outfits, and hanging out with overall friendly people was exactly was Halloween should be like, so Alyss was delighted that she had convinced herself to sign up for this, rather than sit in her dorm and do nothing.

Interacting with all in the group ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Date & Time: 30th October
Metamorphmagus: Not Active Outfit: Ghost bedsheet
♥♥♥ The word 'excited' did not begin to even capture how Xiomara felt. She loved going trick n' treating when she was back home - her grandparents would often take her. This year, she was pretty sure that she would not get to celebrate the holiday and it was a little saddening. So, when she found out that she could enjoy Halloween, she jumped at the opportunity to do so.

Donning a bedsheet with holes for eyes, she opted to come as a ghost. Not because she was lazy but because she could not afford to buy super scary outfits every year and this was a nice, easy way to dress up without going out of the budget. The bedsheet was an older one and had been used several years. She even went as a witch before but right now, it felt a little silly when everyone here was magical!

Making her way down to the grounds, Xiomara approached a small group sitting by one of the fire pits. She noticed some ingredients to the side and grinned underneath the sheet as she spotted the marshmallows. "Hi! I'm Xiomara!" She introduced herself with a wave of her hand as she approached them. Underneath the white bedsheet, she was also smiling but it was covered so people wouldn't notice.

One girl introduced herself as Avis, another first year Ravenclaw - just like her. She blinked, listening to the girl talk about an icebreaker. She seemed kind of mean, glaring at them, even though she did not know them. Xiomara was a little put off by her attitude, it almost seemed like she did not want to be here or even talk to them but she did start an icebreaker, which made way for conversation and that was good! Then there was Mamori, another first year but this time one of the badgers. He was dressed in the same outfit as Xiomara was - and she loved that.

Xiomara laughed softly at the quote Mamori gave, it was definitely a crazy one to hear out of context! "Oh yes, please," She responded to the question about wanting some candy, grabbing a piece with a 'Thank you'. The ravenclaw also picked up some marshmallows and placed it onto a skewer.

The next person introduced herself as Alyss and she grinned at the random quote. Alyss was a Slytherin. It looked like the group was only missing was a Gryffindor for the full circle! "Oh, I'm also a first year. A Ravenclaw," She finished her introduction, as she had already said her name but she noticed that everyone else was giving their year and house. "It's great to meet you all," She continued, pleased to get to know a few more first years as she was always keen to meet new people in her year group and make some new friends.

Looking at Mamori, who opted to ask a second question after answering the random question he was provided with, she chose to answer that one, "My abuelo translates to 'grandfather'- I mean, grandpa - is a big fan of tricks so we usually try and do some pranks on each other every year instead of the treats! But I really enjoy this chocolate cake treat that my family make, if that counts!" Xiomara responded, putting some thought into her answer as she titled her head and pursed her lips in thought for a few moments before adding a final thought, "I also really like bubblegum flavoured sweets!" as she thought about the packet sweets that she liked.

She liked a lot of sweets and desserts, being a huge foodie but getting a bubblegum-flavoured lollipop was always a nice fun surprise. They were much more unique than some of the others and she was a big fan of that. It was not Halloween specific but she often got some when she went trick or treating anyway.

"I am guessing I should ask a question now too? So, mine is, what's your favourite Halloween or scary movie to watch?" She asked, before pausing and wondering if those raised in a magical family even watched movies. The concept of movies were something she had to explain to Aamon not too many weeks prior so maybe they wouldn't, "Or story, if you prefer," She added, just in case as they could answer the question via books instead!

| Mamori lifted his pumpkin bucket and circled the fire pit, grabbing generous handfuls of sweets — a mix of chocolates, Fudge Flies, Jelly Slugs, Sticky caramel, and those peculiar muggle treats his dad kept bringing home — and placing them in front of each student for them to pick through at their leisure. As the introductions circled their group, he mentally cataloged their names through his bedsheet eyeholes. Xiomara's caught his attention as distinctly non-English, though he bit back an amused smile at his own observation. The irony wasn't lost on him — trying to explain "Mamori" to English speakers had been quite the adventure. At least they shared the same fashion sense, both choosing the timeless bedsheet ghost costume.

One Slytherin, two Ravenclaws, and himself representing Hufflepuff — an interesting mix, he noted — just missing Gryffindor to complete the set.

Just as the next person opened their mouth to answer Xiomara's question about favorite Halloween stories, his attention caught on the spread at the nearby table. The arranged graham crackers, chocolate bars, and marshmallows triggered a specific memory — his dad, returning from an American research trip, rambling excitedly about this particular combination.

Without missing a beat, Mamori grabbed a skewer and marshmallow, already plotting his demonstration of what his father had dubbed "the secret technique."

"Sorry to interrupt, but you all absolutely need to see this," he said, pausing briefly to ensure he wasn't completely derailing the conversation. "Watch carefully — this is how you make the so-called 'perfect s'more.'" The process came naturally as he narrated each step: "First, skewer the marshmallow like this, then — here's the trick — bite little notches on one side. The chocolate goes right here," he wedged the piece into the modified surface, pressing it firmly against the marshmallow's sticky interior, "see how it sticks? Now we can rotate it freely without losing anything to the fire." As he held his chocolate-marshmallow creation over the flames, the two ingredients began melting together in perfect sync — exactly as planned. "Once it's all melty, just press it between the crackers and..." A quick maneuver, a smooth skewer withdrawal, and there it was. "Perfect s'more! Dad calls it 'the ancient art of marshmallow architecture' — bit dramatic if you ask me, but it works."

Avis looked around the fire at the people, giving a small laugh at the proper moment. The ghost with the candy, of which she thankfully grabbed a piece, seemed fine. She had no especially exciting observations of him, nor his costume. The next girl to speak, though, could barely contain her excitement, and Avis smirked a bit at her costume, amused. If anyone were to ask, Avis would say she was dressed up as a witch. The other girl to talk was also seemingly incredibly creative, going for the brilliant costume of a white sheet as well. Not that Avis was any better. But still, really? Could no one think of anything better than a ghost or witch?

My abuelo - I mean, grandpa - is a big fan of tricks so we usually try and do some pranks on each other every year instead of the treats! Avis tilted her head and smiled, filing away this useful bit of information for later. If she ever needed a target, she knew where to look. This thought was, unfortunately, evident in the sly grin that appeared, not that Avis noticed.

The first highly creative ghost grabbed a skewer and a marshmallow and proceeded to try to teach the crew how to roast a marshmallow. That piqued Avis' interest. After all, what was a fire without a bit of marshmallow roasting competition? Alaina and Avis had had some of the most competitive s'more competitions known to man. As Mamori held his over the fire, waiting for it to cook, she bolted past him and, having unlocked her competitive nature, skewered her own marshmallow and stood next to him, grinning at him. "Nonsense, nonsense. Let the master show you how a proper s'more is built. First, roast the marshmallow a bit, continuously rotating it." She waited as he created his s'more, and gave him a nod of approval. "Thats a respectable s'more my friend, but you have yet to master the art." She waited until the marshmallow was golden brown and starting to droop, before taking a second skewer, and with a bit of careful twisting, pushed a graham cracker onto the skewer. Next came a two pieces of chocolate, before she transferred the marshmallow to the other skewer and twisted a second piece of graham cracker on top. She held the s'more on a stick over the fire for a couple more seconds, allowing the chocolate to melt. "That's a decent s'more you've got there, Mamori, but you have one fatal flaw-your chocolate isn't melted to the graham cracker, and your graham cracker is cold." She pulled off her final concoction and offered it to him with a mock bow. "Shall we trade to judge each other's pieces?"

Immediately, she felt silly. This was how she acted with her sister, with Maria, not out in public. She wasn't supposed to be messing around at Hogwarts. And yet, here she was.

| The competitive spark flared up watching Avis handle the marshmallow with practiced precision. Each rotation, the pause before layering the chocolate and graham cracker, hinted at experience — this wasn’t her first s’more showdown, clearly.

"A competition?" Every proper challenge needed proper stakes — that was just how these things worked. He fidgeted with the edge of his costume, a smile tugging at his lips as the perfect idea struck him. "You know what would make this more interesting?Five sickles says my technique beats yours."

He accepted the offer without a second thought, taking the s'more Avis handed him and passing his own to her in return. The moment of truth arrived with his first bite. The chocolate had melted into the graham cracker, with surprising precision, creating a harmony with the marshmallow ᅳ one he hadn't expected. It was... well, it was actually impressive. But with money on the line, he wasn't about to let that admission slip.

"Hmm," he mused, pretending to consider it deeply, making a show of contemplating the flavors as if he were some sort of s'mores connoisseur. "Not bad at all, but I still think mine's better...though I have a feeling you might disagree with that assessment."

His gaze swept over the fire pit, where their new friends watched. An idea — one sure to bring out the best reactions and include everyone in the fun — sparked to life.

"I've got an idea." He rose and darted for another marshmallow. "Let’s settle this properly. One more round, and everyone here" — he swept a hand over the group by the fire, his ghost costume dancing with a touch of drama — "can be the judges. May the best s’more chef take the crown."

With a grin, he briskly set up an impromptu assembly line of marshmallows and chocolates. After pulling out his handkerchief to keep things tidy, he used it to hold each marshmallow as he carefully scooped out a small section to make room for the chocolate — thoughtful enough to avoid using his teeth for everyone’s sake. Into each notch, he wedged the chocolate pieces perfectly, then toasted and layered each s’more before passing them down the line to everyone by the fire.

"Five sickles, oh you are on!" Avis grinned as she traded s'mores with him and tried to plop the whole thing in her mouth. She failed, miserably, and a bit of the cracker fell to the ground and a bit of marshmallow landed low on her cloak. She didn't even notice, a testament to the desperation she had for some hint of normality in her life.

But the amount she did get in her mouth was delicious. Besides the slightly cold graham cracker, the marshmallow mixed with chocolate was a harmony inside her mouth. It was the perfect mixture of chocolate and marshmallow, and she let out a quiet "mmm" before she could stop herself. The graham cracker really was the weak spot in the concoction. But was the chocolaty marshmallow enough to outweigh the cracker? Avis supposed she would let the others choose.

Avis took a different approach to creating her s'mores, jamming all the marshmallows on one skewer and toasting them. She teased Mamori as he put chocolate pieces in his s'more. "This seems to be taking you a while. Don't you wish you could make s'mores quicker?" She added the graham crackers and chocolate and roasted once more, before sliding a s'more off to each "judge," before giving Mamori a little mock bow. "May the best man win."

Alyss giggled as the s’mores competition began, and she grabbed a fork to roast a marshmallow herself, though not to put it in a s’more. She always enjoyed the gooey marshmallow on its own first, before even thinking about making a s’more. And today? She was perfectly fine with a perfect, golden brown marshmallow.

Stabbing a jumbo marshmallow with her fork, she held the end of the fork close to the coals, glowing orange with heat. Alyss let one side of her treat cook, before pulling it out when she noticed it beginning to smoke a little bit. It had not yet lit of fire, and was a darker gold on one side and the top of the marshmallow. Nodding in satisfaction, she put the other side of the marshmallow next to the coals, listening in with a laugh to how their little competition was going.

Alyss soon finished her marshmallow, and squished it, just to be certain that it was the correct texture. Once she was sure, she plucked it off of her stick and popped it directly into her mouth, letting out an “Mmm..” at its deliciousness. Once she finished, she found herself staring at a s’more- no, two s’mores- that had been passed to her. It was Alyss’s understanding that she was a judge, and was to decide which s’more was better.

Grinning at the mere fact of being given the sugary treats for no charge, Alyss dug in. She gobbled down the first s’more passed to her, and nodded in acknowledgment of the tastiness of the s’more, acting very serious and professional. “And now, to taste the competition!” she exclaimed, before taking a large bite of the next sweet sandwich, letting out a yelp as the graham cracker split in half from her bite. “Aah!”

Finishing off the second s’more, there was only one thing left to do. “And now… I decree that… Mamori wins!” She said with great flourish. But, of course, she wasn’t the only judge. Turning to Xiomara, and, with a very serious and straight face, asked “And your thoughts, my fellow judge?”
