[quote]Walking and reading is a learned skill. It's the common trope in stories to see the bookworm reading a book and walking down a hallway, then not see a tall and handsome man and crash into him. She tumbles to the ground, her glasses scatter across the floor, and she and the handsome stranger make awkward eye and hand contact and then sparks fly. Or sometimes they run into a pole. That happens too.

But June Selwyn was not such a person. Expertly weaving through crowds of people, the racing captain's peripheral vision was keen enough that she had never once walked into a tall and handsome stranger while walking and reading. She had run into several columns in her first year, though.

Today's read was, yet again, a foray into the nature of curses and dark magic. Which would be normally a very concerning read, but thankfully the book's title was less concerning than some others that June had been checking out from the library. She'd began to be aware of the optics of being seen reading books about curses right after the Headliner softly accused her of cursing her team. The black and gold filagreed cover had the words 'On The Nature of Dispelling Curses' artfully displayed across the front. At the rate June was doing independent study, she was growing confident that she could pass her Defence Against Dark Arts OWL in a matter of weeks if it was allowed.

June flipped another page, tutting her tongue as it spouted more about Protego and Finite Incantatem. This wasn't what she was looking for, but she had to be sure. Every page would be thoroughly dissected, but the Slytherin was beginning to lose hope. Perhaps she would need to find a way into the restricted section books after all.

Her walk was uneventful as the moving stairwell was sparsely filled after supper, most students choosing to spend their evenings outside and enjoying the last of sunny days. No matter, it meant the common room was emptier.

Thump.

And then there was a girl. On the ground. Right in front of her. Ah yes, June remembered nearly slipping off the moving staircases in her early years. She'd never actually fallen, though, hadn't heard of anyone else doing so either. Poor thing. The girl seemed conscious, though, so that was a good sign. "You alright there?" June leaned down and offered a hand. "Didn't fall too far down, I hope?"

The sky was falling

Or, more precisely, Evpraksiya realized distantly as she tumbled off the moving staircase, she was falling. Time itself unraveled, stretching itself around the Slytherin as gravity turned her world upside down in a dizzying storm. She knew that some claimed that in the scant few moments before your demise, time would slow down long enough for you to reflect on your life and maybe even have a come-to-God epiphany. But Evpraksiya had only enough time to curse the ghastly design of Hogwarts' treacherous moving staircases before she hit the unforgiving hard stone. Violently.

The moment she landed, Evpraksiya decided that the bright bursts of white-hot pain were not in fact, normal. The Slytherin accidentally bit her tongue as the metallic tang of copper filled her mouth. The air was knocked out of her lungs on impact as the cruel laws of gravity came down on her with all the fury of an indignant six-year-old with a hammer. Evpraksiya could have been mistaken for a Shakespearean tragedy through the drama that went on in falling a mere 5 meters.

It wasn't her fault really, she decided, laying dazed on the ground and staring up at the beautiful intricate patchwork of stairs moving above her. The moment before she was about to step onto the stairs the sun had decided to spite her, shining through one of the grand windows to reflect the light off of a particularly bright picture frame and directly into her eyes.

No one, Evpraksiya thought idly, would ever believe her.

At the notice of another person approaching her (or maybe they’d been there all along?) Evpraksiya straightened up, teeth sinking further in her lip to muffle a hiss of pain as she righted herself to an upright position, porcelain-fragile and just as brittle as the delicate dolls. The girl held back the urge to lay on the ground, play dead for a bit longer, and instead took a deep breath before sacramento gem eyes looked up to see whoever decided to come across her at this truly, unseemingly time.

Lovely. No, really the person standing in front of her only really added to that level of humiliation she was experiencing- what did she do to deserve this? Winding up at the foot of the stairs by coincidence and cruel fate. Perhaps she should be a poet, there already were enough unfortunate events in her life occurring, Evpraksiya thought, dazed and blinking the faint clusters of stars out of her vision.

Ah- thank you. And no, only a few meters I believe? Fate is- unfair today. Evpraksiya smiled tightly at the other girl, her usual polished smile nowhere to be seen as she took the offered hand confidently and collapsed immediately the moment she put any weight onto her rapidly swelling ankle.

Evpraksiya didn’t particularly enjoy how familiar she was becoming with the damned floor.

[quote]Some people call it a spark, or a glint in the eye. Or simply an air of mutual understanding. Did June see such a thing in the stair's victim? It was too early to tell.

"Well then, good practice if you want to try out for a broom sport, I suppose," June tried to lighten the mood. Learning to fall was an art form, a skill learned through painful bruises and skinned knees and lots of trips to the hospital wing. Maybe that was only if you were traveling at breakneck speed.

June winced as the girl heeled over, heavily favouring an ankle. Without a moment of thought, the captain pulled out her wand, aiming it at the girl's injury. "Episkey." She would feel an odd sensation around the injury, a change of temperature and the smoothing of muscle and sinew as the ankle allowed the spell to work its, well, magic.

"Any better? Can you walk on it alright?" She gave the girl a hopeful glance, studying her face for a moment. "You're Slytherin, yes? I think I've seen you tutting about the common room a bit. I'm June Selwyn, pleasure to meet you."

She looked up at the stairs as their dance of sporadic movement seemed to come to a rest. "You'll find the rhythm eventually. I had to jump between some platforms in my first year. Not the most elegant way to make your way to a class, but whatever works to get you there on time, I suppose."
