Phelan couldn’t help being a little surprised as two spells came his way. Up until then, the other team seemed to be targeting Nikolai. Neither hit him, but it was very close.

The smoke was finally starting to clear for their team, and Nikolai had finished his little dance. The boy let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding, and found he was rather relieved to be able to see again. Maybe there would be more action now that that was over with.

The duel was becoming highly annoying to say the least, and Reuben was struggling to keep his calm. He was normally really good at being calm and keeping people around him calm too, but today he was struggling. There seemed to be a curse on them that made all their spells fail. What made it worse was the spongify spell which thankfully hit his wand instead of himself, not that that made things easier.

The eleventh hour was explosive for one side and rather dull for the other. Still swathed by a heavy cloud of smoke, Reuben and Ariam held back on casting. Unsure of what their reasoning was, Pyxis chalked it up to them playing it safe to avoid whatever happened in the last round. Reuben had gotten lucky twice to evade Ariam’s miscasts, but he couldn’t always be and maybe the last two remaining players on Team Uagadou & Castelobruxo were accounting for that.

On the other side, Team Beauxbatons & Durmstrang were taking no chances. They had set themselves up nicely to take the win, but it looked to Pyxis that they wouldn’t be satisfied until they got a clean sweep after all. Three Knockback jinxes pierced through the smoke. Nikolai’s was the only one aimed at Reuben and not casting turned out to be the perfect choice for the Uagadou student as he was able to center all his energies on ducking at the right moment. The same couldn’t be said for Ariam who took the brunt of Aurélie and Phelan’s laser focus. Phelan’s struck them on the hip, but Aurélie’s slammed into them directly on the chest. It sent the wix hurtling backwards, out of the smoke cloud that was already beginning to dissipate. They didn't rise and their body was quickly removed by the mediwizards. Once it was all clear, Reuben found himself standing alone as time rapidly ticked down to the duel’s end.

And another one down. Team Uagadou + Castelobruxo seemed to be falling, one at a time. First it was the boy that Aurélie had hit with the Slug-Vomiting Charm, and now it was the wix that both she and Phelan had just cast a Knockback Jinx on. Now there was only one team member left, and Aurélie was willing to bet that he didn't like his own odds of winning.

Team Beauxbatons + Durmstrang had dominated this duel from the beginning and there was no way to turn the tide now. Everything was going perfectly according to strategy and either the duel would time out, or Nikolai, Phelan, and Aurélie, all together, would find a way to knock out the last one standing before then.

But, there was a voice in the back of the French girl's head, telling her to keep her focus on the game and not get cocky. Duelling is the most unpredictable sport. One moment you could be fine, the next your opponent could have you blindfolded with a perfectly aimed and casted spell. So she kept her guard, letting it down only as more mediwizards rushed onto the scene to rid the duellists of the newest unconscious body.

Despite her making peace with the fact that knocking people out was just part of the duel, Aurélie still found herself looking on hesitantly as the wix was taken, wanting to find them later during camp and apologise.

perfectionist Reducio Critical failure range is reduced by 1. When you cast a spell, you take your time doing so. You enunciate your words with care and you do not recklessly swish your wand about. Your spells don't backfire, they don't fail. You're too much of a Perfectionist to let that happen.

fearless Reducio Players with this ability are immune to a dhampir's unsettling aura, terrible presence, and a werewolf's intimidation. You do not scare easily. In fact they might even call you fearless.

Nikolai Volka | Durmstrang Third Year Duellist

The darkness may have finally stopped suppressing the duelling ground but seemingly it had reaped infection into the young Durm deeper than he had bargained for. Self deprecating came easily when raised by a father who valued nothing shy of perfection, though in truth even that feat would never quench his families expectations that manifested as an insatiable thirst. Therefore as the duel continued he found himself chastising himself with names and insults he would not dare use on anyone else.

The boy had started the duel so calculated and focused but as it went on and two boys fell he couldn't help but wonder how his parents would have reacted. Despite not dealing the final blow on either opponent Nikolai felt the damage he had surged through them and the consequence of those actions. Would his father be proud to see him finally showing the gumption and ruthless nature worthy of Volkov heritage or think him pathetic for his failure to strike. No matter the option Nikolai was left feeling utterly useless, too much like his family to be good and yet not enough to be deemed worthy in their eyes.

It was a sickening thought that distracted the boy completely. His teammates had seemingly decided to focus on Ariam during his spiral and in a last minute panic he aimed at Phelan but was unable to make his target. Further failures in a long inconceivable list that made up his life.

Slight tears began to pinprick at the boys eyes, barely visible in the haze of battle, as an undulating sickness swelled in the depths of his stomach. All confidence he had previously had now felt corrupted and tainted by the menacing looming of his bloodline. Yet that was not the family he now deemed worthy, for he had that power to choose. Turning back he sought the aurora's of Valentin's eyes for strength, then the dashing carefree smile of Hans for courage.

These were the true people he deemed family and in their faces he found no slight of judgement or disappointment. In fact their faces were the very portrait of support and encouragement. The stain of his past still stung but in their eyes held the key to a future free of such pestilence. One way or another it was time to end this and there was only one duellist left.

His and Aurelie’s spells had collided with them almost simultaneously. Phelan felt a little twist in his stomach as Ariam hit the ground. Of course he’d known this was going to happen, but Ariam’s body lying their like that just looked so real. This was something he was going to have to get used to about dueling.

And then the boy realized- it was just Reuben left. No matter how banged up the three of them were, they were all still standing. It was almost over- they just had to focus for a little bit longer.

As if things were not bad enough already, Reuben was now the last one standing. One of him against the three of them. He knew that there was no use putting up a fight, but he did not want to look weak and give up just like that. He knew that he did not have much time left to remain conscious, and he would try to make the best of the time that he did have.

The final round was so explosive, Pyxis was surprised that a single Bombarda hadn’t even been cast. Standing alone, Reuben was a long shot away from winning, but the Uagadou student didn’t understand the meaning of giving up. He stood tall and strong, pointing his wand at Nikolai and firing an almost-perfect Tickling Charm. On the cusp of victory, Nikolai felt his torso tighten and attacked by the force of a thousand fingers. He doubled over in laughter, an effect sure to last some time after the duel, but he didn’t go without getting his lick back.

In retaliation, the Russian summoned another powerful fire charm, blasting his opponent. Reuben felt the heat first, then came the searing pain as flames caught on his robes. It would have been tough for anyone to hold on in that state, but the Beauxbatons duo decided to make it even harder on him. Aurélie perhaps enjoyed Nikolai’s samba skills and his request for a dance. At least, that’s what Pyxis imagined as he watched her send the same spell over to Reuben. The boy had no chance of evading her wishes to see him dance as he too started swinging his hips in round two of the samba-thon. Despite his fine footwork, Reuben was too locked into the dance to avoid Phelan’s signature Knockback Jinx. It sent him crumbling and Pyxis paused for a few beats, unsure of if he was to call the end of the duel as Reuben’s legs were still being affected by the Tarantallegra, clearly moving. However, when it was obvious that the lad wasn’t getting up, Pyxis strode to the center of the stage as the mediwizards put out his flames and strapped his flailing legs down to a stretcher.

“Your winners!” he addressed the crowd, waving his arm towards Phelan, Aurélie, and the still-laughing Nikolai in a grand motion. Then, he turned to the trio and flashed a thumbs up. “Congrats!”
