It was a tough day for Aria. She had taken two different exams in her classes, and had been assigned a bunch of homework. She was exhausted and burnt out and just wanted to go home. It was times like these that made Aria miss her father.

Aria's father had passed away when she was just a little kid, leaving behind Aria, her brother Keith, and her mother. It was hard for Aria's mother, to take care of two kids, while also earning enough money for all three of them. But she managed. Aria sat up in the Astronomy tower thinking about her dad, feeling more alone then ever. She felt guilty that she was so stressed out with school work. After all, she should be on top of it and should be getting perfect marks! The reason Aria goes so hard on herself is unknown. Maybe it is her personality, maybe it's her mother pushing her, or maybe it's the fact that her own father was head boy of this year.

Aria looked up at the sky in the Astronomy tower.

I miss you dad.

Aria sniffed, and a huge tear fell down her face. She buried her head into her knees and put her hands over herself. All she wanted was someone to make her feel less alone. Thankfully, she wouldn't have to wait long.

The title “rule-breaker” was one you never thought of when meeting Eugenia. How could such a quiet, rule abiding girl. How could you have ever bestowed such a title upon her? Well, you couldn’t. But this time, Eugenia chose to break a rule. Curfew. Oh, yes curfew.

Hadn’t she broken that rule again?

She had, a few days earlier, she arrived at the Astronomy tower to knit a scarf in honour of her late grandfather. And yes, that scarf was sent off on his birthday, now wrapped around his headstone in a Greek cemetery, whose location she would never share. Still, she had materialised her grief, something that made it more bearable. A thing she had managed to do just a few times after hearing about his murder, when she was 10. Well, that was some progress.

A side effect of this trip though was, well, a constant will to return to the Astronomy tower. She went there twice, once in the morning, and once because she had class. Maybe twice for class? Yes, twice. But they didn’t satisfy her. She wanted to go there again at night. But break curfew? Why break rules? Well, she had already done it once. One more time won’t hurt.

A night came when she gave in to her intrusive thoughts and the will to return. So she did.

The young girl put on some comfy clothes and very carefully walked up the stairs and to the tower. Looking around once, she spotted no prefects. She slithered into the tower, instantly locking her view towards the field of stars. It was beautiful, the night was beautiful. After a good few seconds of staring at the stars, she looked down.

She wasn’t alone.

A young girl, she seemed like a first year, was sitting down on the floor, face buried in her knees. Eugenia could have acted like a prefect, but tears came from the girl’s part. So, it wasn’t the time, nor the place, to do that. Hey.. She walked closer. The stars are beautiful tonight, aren’t they? She had to make a smooth introduction. Whats wrong? I can hear you’re crying.

Hey..

Aria whipped her head around and noticed another girl standing behind her. She instantly wiped her tears and put on a fake smile. For some reason, Aria didn't want this girl to know she was crying. Aria didn't want to look weak or anything.

The stars are beautiful tonight, aren’t they?

It was true. The stars were beautiful that evening. Aria took a moment to stare up at the sky. She discreetly wiped her tears from her face so she could get a better view. Aria didn't know much about Astronomy besides what she had learned in her Astronomy class. Though, about a month ago, Aria helped her friend Elvenia Moonshadow assemble her telescope, so she did get a good look at the stars then.

Whats wrong? I can hear you’re crying.

Aria still tried to keep her fake smile and tried her best to talk to this girl without her voice breaking.

Oh! No no no, I'm just- I am-

But it was too much. Aria was really struggling. She missed her father too much. Her fake smile dropped, and a big tear went down her cheek. In this moment, she finally decided to open up to the girl.

I'm so sorry that I bothered you. I'm just a little sad. My dad passed away a few years ago and sometimes I just miss him so much. I don't know why. It's so stupid, since it's been so long since he passed.

Aria dug her head back into her knees. Saying these words out loud made her cry even harder. Why did she tell this random girl all this?! What could she say anyways? "I'm sorry for your loss but I gotta go"? Aria wished she had just said nothing.

Looking up at the stars again, Eugenia noticed that the other girl was doing the same thing. She answered her own question in her mind. Yes, they are beautiful. They are awesome. A comforting sight, in a way you wouldn’t expect. She gave a weak smile that faded almost at once. A shiver ran through her spine.

The younger girl wiped some of her tears from her face. Even if she tried to hide it from Eugenia, she wouldn’t find any luck in doing so. Her smile looked sad, a bit fake. She couldn’t blame the Ravenclaw. How can you smile, when you were crying the moment before?

Eugenia loved Astronomy. She remembered times when she’d go stargazing with her family. They’d look up at the stars and say stories. Stories of how stars are born, and how stars are just souls looking down on their fellow humans. Those tales occasionally haunted her, but recently, she began liking them. Of course, it didn’t provide any closure, but they were still a happy thought, in an infinite sea of grief.

I'm so sorry that I bothered you. I'm just a little sad. My dad passed away a few years ago and sometimes I just miss him so much. I don't know why. It's so stupid, since it's been so long since he passed. Just a little? The girl began crying again, even worse than she used to. Her head in her knees, it was evident she was struggling. But, weren’t they both?

It wasn’t her father that left this Earth, but a grandfather she loved dearly. Even though Eugenia couldn’t comfort herself, she’d try to help the underclassman. Because it’s always sad when little girls cry like this. She sat down next to her.

What happened to you is truly an awful thing. The death of someone you know and love is always something difficult to process. And it isn’t bad to cry. It is very hard to accept death. And unfortunately, many people are in this boat. No less, many children. She sighed for a moment. Taking a few deep breaths, she tried to comfort herself. It wasn’t time to cry now. Each experience is different. But I believe I can relate to you. Because I’m another passenger of this terrible boat.

Two years ago, I lost my grandfather to murder. It’s been two full years, and although I’m more mature, it is still very difficult to get over this grief. I feel sad when remembering him, all my memories connected to him are now bittersweet, wrapped in black cloth. It’s alright to cry. Sometimes, that is the way you realise you still love them. Because no one is truly dead until no one remembers them anymore. And by crying, you prove that you do remember him.
Another sigh. Its difficult to find comfort…

In Greece, my home country, they have a tale. A legend. It says that the dead aren’t truly gone. They go to heaven, the stars. When a person dies, they become a star. I believe, no, I hope my grandfather, watching over me and shining. Maybe your father is too.
A small, sad smile.

The girl spoke to Aria in a kind soothing voice. She made Aria feel that it was okay to cry. She continued speaking to Aria, making her feel more that her emotions were valid.

Each experience is different. But I believe I can relate to you. Because I’m another passenger of this terrible boat.

Aria looked up at the sweet girl, and could see slight tears in her eyes. Had she experienced loss too? Maybe her own father had past away. For some reason, this crushed Aria but made her feel better at the same time. She was crushed because she felt that no one else should have to feel these horrible feelings, but she also felt better because the fact that someone else was feeling these feelings makes Aria less alone.

Two years ago, I lost my grandfather to murder.

Aria's stomach dropped on the word "murder". What a horrible thing. Aria's father had died due to sickness, but never murder! Aria couldn't imagine the anger this girl must have felt at whoever murdered her grandfather. If Aria's own father had been murdered, she would never forgive the killer.

In Greece, my home country, they have a tale. A legend. It says that the dead aren’t truly gone. They go to heaven, the stars. When a person dies, they become a star. I believe, no, I hope my grandfather, watching over me and shining. Maybe your father is too.

Aria looked back down at her knees. She wasn't crying anymore, and she did feel better, but she still was struggling a little bit. Aria liked the idea that her father might be a star, watching over her.

Well, we are in the astronomy tower.

Aria looked up at all the bright stars in the sky. She scanned the sky and found two very bright stars next to each other in the sky. She lifted her arm and pointed at them.

Look at those stars. Maybe your grandfather and my dad are up their together. Maybe they see us together. I'm Aria by the way. What's your name?

Both girls struggled with the pain. It was evident. Both lost someone close to them. One lost her father, the other her grandfather. Both were grieving. Eugenia didn’t know whether the girl’s father passed away, well, because of violence. Because of someone’s will to remove their life. Though she knew that they felt the same thing. A hollow in their chests. A part of them that will forever be missing. It will never be there again. Because they were both gone. To not return ever again to their little girls.

Yes. She agreed with Aria. Yes, we are in the Astronomy Tower. Well, this is why I came here. I thought it would give me some comfort. To see him “materialised”. Maybe. Maybe we can both have some comfort together. Isn’t it a nice thought? Hm? She smiled slightly. This interaction with the girl was heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. Why were they speaking of death on such a lovely night? They both hurt. That’s why. If you share the pain, it is easier to carry.

Aria eventually pointed at two bright stars in the night sky. Maybe it was the ones they lost. Maybe they sat together just as they were, ignoring the world around them. Yea. That was one thought. Again, gloomy, but surprisingly uplifting. And oh. The girl’s is Aria. It would be awesome if they were. Mirrored experiences huh… My name is Eugenia. Nice to meet you Aria. Did you ever, um, enjoy living with your father at all? Or did he die when you were too young? Sorry if it is a sensitive question.

It was kinda. But she would have answered. Not only had she met him, but she loved him. She treasured him. Until he was gone. If Aria wanted, she could recall some of her perfect memories to describe him. Maybe that would give a degree off comfort too.
