The study room felt almost claustrophobic.
Almost.
It wasn't exactly the study itself, as there were far more likely places to leave a student feeling trapped. The muggle studies classroom, for one, its space surprisingly even more dull than the subject itself. No, it was hardly the room. It had been the people. The perpetual hum of whispered conversations, the scraping of chairs against freshly polished floor, and the ever present scent of old parchment mingled with ink. None of it unbearable, but still always there.
Her dark eyes lifted briefly from her textbook, glazing over the room’s occupants with the same indifference she reserved for most things these days. To her left, a pair of Hufflepuffs could be found anxiously reviewing their notes, their soft exchanges only broken by the occasional nervous giggle. On the opposite end, an audible laugh broke whatever thoughts she had left. A group of older students, likely Gryffindors by the way they so blatantly disregarded the etiquette held in place. Iris' eyes narrowed, allowing for a barely evident sneer to form on her lips.
Iris allowed her gaze to linger for a moment, her expression almost bored. To her, these study sessions had become more of a formality than anything else. A chance to maintain appearances rather than to learn. After all, it would be unbecoming for a Ravenclaw; for an Athanasiou, to be seen doing nothing at all, regardless if the work at hand offered no real challenge.
She shifted in her seat, the movement subtle. Her small frame, always well postured and composed, allowed her to exist in spaces like this without much disturbance. To those who knew her only in passing, Iris appeared as she always did. Aloof, distant. For the few that knew her better, something about as rare as a Slytherin showing humility, it was clear that her calm exterior was carefully maintained.
Rubbing at her temples, a final sigh escaped the second year's lips.
"άσκοπος." ("Pointless.")

Perfection was everything, in Eugenia’s opinion. If her work wasn’t perfect, if she made many mistakes, she’d punish herself. Because how can you master knowledge without reaching its perfection? Because it needs to be thoroughly lodged in your mind for you to forever remember it.
Usually, the Hufflepuff would enjoy studying somewhere it was quiet. For some reason, today she didn’t. No study partners today either. She was bored of her normal style, she wanted to change it up a bit. Bag bulging with books, she walked down a corridor to the Study Room. Why she picked this room she didn’t know either. She just did. Her subconscious was the one acting today. She didn’t really know what she was doing. […]
Essays. Too many essays. She had to write them all. Let’s see. Checklist? Astronomy- done. Potions- done. Charms- done. Flying- done. Next on her priority list was Transfiguration. Not Finished. She took the essay draft out of her bag and wrote it on a piece of parchment she had in her bag. It was surely a tiring job, but don’t perfect letters, the right choice of words, and the absence of pointless scribbles and messes a thing that would improve your grade? And study method, for that matter?
The choice she made was well, a bit, uh… Impulsive? No. Because she didn’t know what she was doing when she came here. She just did. Too much noise. Another group of badgers was studying, but making a bit of noise. A bunch of Gryffindors were breaking all rules of the study room.
Well, there was just one. Keep quiet, let others study too.
But no, all etiquette rules were forgotten. How can you study and be organised in this situation? She tried to remain calm and not leave the room. She had other essays to finish. And she had to finish them now. Tomorrow, Quiddich Practice. And she couldn’t leave them until the day after! That calm face hid many thoughts. How was this even supposed to be a study room? Yea, she didn’t know.
At one point, the chocolate haired head spun around. She heard her mother tongue. Greek. Άσκοπος pointless Yes, this was all pointless. She now wanted to speak. The mother tongue she so much wanted to. Yes, this noise is pointless. I don’t get how we are supposed to do homework in here. She looked around for a moment. They have probably made some very stupid decisions over the course of their lives.xxx

The steady tick of the clock only seemed to multiply, a tribute to the hours she'd spent droning away. For what it was worth, her time had been spent productively. With little use in entertaining her pompous thoughts any longer, a familiar tone to her left managed to peak an otherwise vacant interest.
Only she had never seen this girl in her life.
Hardly a shock. Watchful as she may be, Iris couldn't say she knew much of anyone. Carefully, her eyes shifted to the sound, lingering a dark gaze for possibly longer than what was considered polite. It was almost ironic, the way they spoke as if no one could understand. Only that was just it. No one ever did, proving an almost sneaky upper hand possessed by the dual linguists.
Had she been any less uptight, Iris might have laughed. Instead, she smirked in a way that didn't quite reach her eyes. The single word she offered hadn't been meant to entice conversation, leaving her habit of muttering before she spoke slightly more aware.
Still, she couldn’t deny the intrigue.
Her fingers traced the edges of her parchment, mind half on the mundane work, half on the girl’s words. She debated for a moment; whether to engage, or to let the moment pass in silence as she so often did. Normally, she would have opted for the latter, her brooding nature often getting the best only to leave the worst. Only this time something nudged her forward.
"Δεν ακούω τη μητρική μου γλώσσα κάθε μέρα." ("Isn't every day I hear my mother tongue.)" Her wealthy English accent curled around the language, still harboring its dialect. "What's your name?"

Returning to her book for a moment, she then looked to her side once again. The girl, was she Greek? She had now turned around, looking at Eugenia. The girl’s dark eyes contrasted Eugenia’s vivid green, though she seemed familiar. Familiar? Well, many Greeks had dark eyes, brown hair… But she in particular seemed… Familiar. What was so different about this girl?
They stood for a moment in very awkward silence. Eugenia tried to sort her thoughts. And all of the memories from Greece that came forward. Oh the memories. Happy ones, with her mum, dad, and a few with her, then newborn, sister. Memories of all their trips there. It all made her swim in thoughts, whether they were nice, or, now, bittersweet. Yes, because since her grandfather’s death, many happy memories became a sad thing to remember. Unlucky, as Eugenia tended to remember literally anything.
Why was it such an important thing to her? A death was important. Was his death too impactful?
No, she shouldn’t be thinking of this now. A final thought on how everything around her was so interconnected, she faced the girl again. That’s true. I rarely ever hear someone speaking my mother tongue. Still, I like it. The truth is, there are very few Greeks in Great Britain.
The Hufflepuff registered the other girl’s heavy English accent when she spoke Greek. Instead, hers was flawless, it could have been a child born and raised in Greece who spoke. Eugenia was intelligent. She didn’t mind the other girl’s heavy accent.
Έχουμε ξανασυναντηθεί εμείς οι δυο; My name is Eugenia Malamo. Of the noble house of Karageorgiadi. What is your name? […] You know, your remind me of someone. Have we met again? She put on a slight and polite smile. The conversation was a bit awkward. But she really wanted to speak Greek. And that meant to keep it going.xxx

A flicker went off in her eyes, as if the name had stuck something particularly notable. The noble house of Karageorgiadi. Well that was certainly an introduction; students loved to pride in lineage, Iris being no exception. Still, the surname stood on the tip of her tongue. Like she knew it, somewhere..
It wasn't impossible, considering how broad her family liked to keep their ties. A business model, to the extent of it. Also surely having to do with their elitist morals. Was that it? Iris couldn't say she paid much attention to their social affairs, having up until recently been too young for the concept.
A small chuckle escaped the Ravenclaw, alongside a nod that indicated agreement. "Όχι πολύ δυστυχώς. Με κάνει να αναρωτιέμαι πώς κατέληξα εδώ." ("Not much unfortunately. Makes me wonder how I ended up here.") A half truth at best, considering she knew full well the arranged marriage was to blame. Still, she didn't mind England too much, even if the pitiful grey streets paled in comparison to Athens.
As the continuation of Greek continued, Iris took it as a hint. It wasn't hard to understand, knowing the opportunities to put it to practice were scarce as it were. In fact, she couldn't possibly recall the last time she'd spoken it aloud to another. And yet to her surprise, she hadn't been the only one who felt a twinge of familiarity. It was then as if all at once, something clicked.
"Καραγεωργιάδη. Φως, όχι?" ("Karageorgiadi. Aurors, no?") She'd of course been referring to her parents, certain at least one of them worked in the field. Nights contained of her mother's stories on the job were in no short of abundance, names of colleagues bound to come across at least occasionally. "Ίρις Αθανασίου." ("Iris Athanasiuo.") Her name, nothing more nor less, something that needed no further elaboration. She stared for a moment, paused in thought as to recall a time where they could have met. To admit she couldn't remember would be in poor taste, instead offering what was hopefully enough to jog a memory. "Πιθανώς, η μητέρα μου είχε μια γεύση να φιλοξενεί δείπνα." ("Possibly, my mother had a taste for hosting dinner parties.")

Eugenia smiled at Iris’ chuckle. Yes, indeed. There were very few Greeks here in the uk and it was easily reflected in the statistics and numbers. She could count the times she had spoken to a Greek person here in England on the fingers of one of her hands. Well, yes, everyone had a story. Τι να πω. What should I say. Many of us wonder what was the reason. I, on the other hand, wonder how my life could be if the Economic Crisis never happened. Indeed, she did wonder. How could her life had been?
Surely, she would have never come here or expected Hogwarts. With the way Greece is divided academically, she would have gone to Beauxbatons, spoken a lot more French, but she would have been with her family. now it had become a different question. One of what she truly valued more. But she didn’t want to breach their subject any further. It was how Faye chose to bring things her way, she’d say. And no more should have been said in the conversation.
Aurors? Ah yes. Her father was one, while her mother used to be, before chasing her talent in potions. You must mean [aurors]. And yes. My father is one, while my mother used to be.
She listened on. The girl’s name. It was familiar. Iris Athanasiuo. Do you have a relationship with a Maia Athanasiou? And sorry for before. That “house of Karageorgiadi” sounded weird, I know. I just believed that if you were from those old pure-blood families it would mean something to you. Or make you feel happy.
It was all too familiar to her. The voice was familiar. And then it clicked. Your Mother hosted dinners? Well, that reminds me of something. Our parents could known each other. They have many things in common. We could have met too, though indirectly. (through parents). Probably. She smiled once more.
A Greek at Hogwarts? Now that was a very rare occurrence. But talking to her was even better. Maybe it wasn’t such a dreadful mistake the fact that she came to the study room.xxx
