At the half-way point, two strategies were set in stone. After gaining some ground with Zyair’s clutch casting of the Smokescreen Spell, Team Uagadou & Castelobruxo went on the full offensive. Each duellist aimed a Knockback Jinx at the opposing side. However, Team Beauxbatons & Durmstrang knew they’d be under pressure if they continued casting like they had done previously, so they devised something new that they hoped could keep them strong until the end. Phelan and Nikolai, sensing the danger coming their way, elected to bounce on the balls of their feet instead of casting through the smoke. This made them more agile and allowed them both to dodge the three calls of Flipendo from their opponents. Aurélie saw an advantage with Zyair’s last move, so smoke eventually started emitting from the tip of her wand, leaving no duellist unaffected.

“Guys! Go easy on me!” Pyxis yelled after coughing away some of the smoke. This was becoming more difficult for the referee by the second. He ripped off his sunglasses and squinted, just barely making out the bodies of all six duellists. Now, everyone seemed to be on an even playing field when it came to casting, but Team Uagadou & Castelobruxo desperately needed to start doing some damage if they wanted a real shot at winning. And from the sounds of things, Ariam’s laughter had finally subsided and Pyxis could hear no more thumps on the stage from Zyair. He prayed that it meant the lad was finished with the slug show.

Nikolai Volka | Durmstrang Third Year Duellist

Let the darkness consume you. The voice in Nikolai's head was all too familiar but he wasn't willing to admit that for distracted was the last thing he needed to be at present. Instead he decided that as dangerous as it was the voice was correct. As the black smoke enveloped him in shrouded cover he adapted his form to become one with the airy quality. Eyes still burning from the sparks now was no time to be on the attack, defence was just as important in the art of war so slinking into the shadow he slowed his breath in attempt to give no indication to his presence.

Trusting in his teammates he took his defensive position and waited, senses heightened by the lack of sight he opened his body to every tiny signal. Suddenly the cutting of wind alerted the young Russian's ears to movement from two sides that both seemed aimed towards his general direction. Harnessing the energy of Stribog himself just like Valentin had taught him the winds wrapped around him and with a calculated dive he evaded both knockback jinxes that collided against the walls once more. Clearly his targeting was not easing anytime soon and it was starting to feel personal but the training was invaluable so despite his annoyance he couldn't help but beam with ecstasy with every successful dodge.

From across the stage he heard Phelan successfully evade his own attack and was fulfilled with pride. They may be from different schools but they were all showing the strength of their individual power and it was wonderful to witness even in the darkness of the smokescreen. Aurelia too seemed to have a sharp mind and masterfully executed her own use of smoke to even the playing field much to the referee's bane. In another life perhaps the two could have excelled in Durmstrang. The match seemed to be at an impasse but it had made for a most wonderful first duel and Nikolai couldn't help but be joyous in the notion that win or lose he had found pride in his own performance.

Aurélie felt like the luckiest girl in the world, if only just for a moment. Who else could say that they'd been practically blindfolded by smoke, unable to see anything, and still be able to cast a spell properly? She couldn't even see if her wrist movement was right, and yet she'd pulled it off! Technically, while it didn't do anything to give Team Beauxbatons-Durmstrang a clear advantage, the Smokescreen Spell that she'd cast had evened the playing field. Maybe, if they kept going like that, the duel would be back in their favour in no time.

At first, Phelan was quite confused when he heard Aurelie repeat the other team’s earlier spell. What was she trying to do, make it harder for them to see? But when his vision didn’t become darker, Phelan slowly began to realize the girl’s strategy. It was brilliant, really, and Phelan wasn’t one to be easily impressed. With the playing field even again, it didn’t feel so pointless anymore as he readied himself for what was next.

Ariam and the team all choose the same spell to cast, filpendo. They wanted to do some damage while they were ahead but clearly that didn't work out as they had hoped. The Beauxbaton and Durmstrang duellist they were targeting avoided their spells and the one they did not target repeated Zyair's smokescreen spell. Resulting in everyone in the match being affected by the two Fumos spells cast. This is seriously starting to remind me of the practice match with Zyair.

It was unlike him to be so pessimistic, but this duel was not going in his favor. Miss after miss, getting snagged by every spell hit at him. Zyair was getting a little annoyed at how bad they were doing, when had his skills diminished so much? He had that practice duel with Ariam just a few weeks back, and he hadn't done that atrocious.

Maybe his head just wasn't in the game, that'd make sense. He had been busy thinking and wasting his time worrying over other things, talking to people. This was just a side effect of the change in scenery and thought process, he was sure of it.

This round was... not the best. All of their spells had missed, and Reuben noticed a fog coming out of one of his opponents wands. Guess they were finally on equal ground now. He looked around, being able to see nothing but darkness and fog. Aiming at the others was going to be a lot harder, but not impossible. Besides, what had he practiced for if not a situation like this?
