P helan’s softening charm had been pretty good, one of his best in all the times he’d practiced. But of course Zyair dodged.

His teammates were doing pretty well. Once again none of them had been hit, while their own spells had certainly hit their targets.

How much longer could luck be on Beauxbatons-Durmstrang’s side? said a little voice in the back of his head. He ignored it. The young wizard felt a small surge of energy, lifting him up. He griped his wand harder, and stared ahead, daring the other team to cross them.

Dueling was fun, that was how Zyair saw it. Every match, win or a loss, was just another way to spend his time and learn to get better. While winning had the fun victory aspect, (and celebrating was another fun thing to do), losing meant he needed improvement. Which- while it was probably a bad thing in others eyes- he found to be a positive. Improvement, getting better, all things he needed to be applicable in this duel before he threw up more slugs.

After two rounds of viciously going after their opponents, Team Beauxbatons & Durmstrang had finally hit a wall. Or hit nothing, if we're being more specific. Two spells were launched at Ariam by the Beauxbatons duo, but the Chilean wix took a page from Nikolai’s book. Despite their own spell not being as powerful as before, Pyxis still marveled at their skill, this time in their effort to avoid a pulsating blast from Phelan and a jet of flames from Aurélie. They tried to return the favor by targeting Phelan with the spell that was just wearing off on them, but the Beauxbatons boy also had a talent for evasion.

Reuben, finally back in action, went with his original spell and target. The effects had blinded him so severely that he skipped casting a spell to recuperate from the loss of vision. It was only obvious that he would try and inflict the same handicap on the opposite team. Nikolai was prepared to jump out of the way again, but it seemed that Reuben was paying attention to the slippery Durmstrang-ian. He flicked his hand left at the last moment, showering the confident Nikolai in unavoidable green sparks before he could continue to move away.

Before that, however, Nikolai tried to take down Zyair whose state looked to be quickly declining. Prior to even casting a spell, he gurgled up another slug and coughed out more of the slime that came with it. To make matters worse, the flames of Nikolai’s previous Incendio Duo made its way to his collar and singed the skin at his neck before disappearing. Perhaps now that he was in real danger of collapsing, Zyair’s reflexes turned razor sharp, catching sight of Nikolai’s wand and dodging it with time to flourish.

Expecting the end of this stretch of spellcasting, Pyxis noted some relaxed shoulders as the duellists prepared to go at it again. However, a dark smoke began to settle over his feet. The Slytherin looked up to find the source and saw it pouring from the tip of Zyair’s wand. Despite his claim that duelling was mainly something fun for him, this was quite a strategic and serious choice for the wizard. Smoke filled stage, wrapping its tendrils around Zyair himself. It bled across to the other team’s side and blew upwards, obscuring the vision of the entire opposing team. Only Reuben and Ariam remained unaffected.

The Uagadou & Castelobruxo team hadn’t done much to damage their opponents, but this would surely give them the help they needed now.

How wrong the French girl had been. She felt ridiculous as a Smokescreen Spell came her way and blocked her view. She could barely see anything! Had she really gotten all those spells right on target, not gotten a single spell targeted directly at her, just for this? Seriously? She looked around, wondering how many people the smoke affected the view of. She couldn't see much, but from what she could tell, the rest of her team was affected as well.

How was she supposed to be on the offensive like this? How could Nikolai and Phelan evade more spells if they couldn't even see them coming? How could Team Beauxbatons-Durmstrang win at all?

Nikolai Volka | Durmstrang Third Year Duellist

As quickly as he had surmised it the tides had changed, and fate cut their team with a swiftness rivalling his own. No damage had befallen them and that was prize for consolation but the green sparks that had failed to meet its mark earlier now tainted the vision of the young Russian blinding him with flashing light that threatened to burn away at his icy blue irises. Despite the annoyance of the round, he considered a personal failing, a sly smile crossed his lips as he noticed the spell had come from Reuben once more. A duel was only fun with a bit of competition and now that he had returned the real match could begin.

When the boy regained eyesight, it was only to be met with further obscurement as his target who had managed to evade his attack, though not before suffering from his prior burns, was producing a thick cloud of smoke that decidedly wished them as much reversal as fate herself. Within seconds his entire team was shrouded by a dark mist that’s tendrils wrapped up around them and stole away what little vision they had of the stage.

There was something about the darkness of the smoke that transported Nikolai, deep into a place he thought he had escaped forever yet as his vision darkened so too did his mind threatening to suffocate him in gloom. It was all around him completely overwhelming and laying waste to his mental wards, but somewhere deep within a light of his own shone. Shone brighter than any smoke could conceal and taking in a deep inhale he reminded himself that the source of that darkness wasn’t simply black but all consuming and cold as ice. Comparatively the smokescreen was a child’s plaything.

Then for the first time he properly heard the sound that bolstered his spirit and lit the light within him. It wasn’t clear if Valentin could see him, and he certainly had no time to look but with his keen seeker eyes and their connection he knew his champion knew where he was regardless. As the chant of his name renewed his sense of self he took another deep breath. In and out with such steadied emotion. It reminded him of his time with Hans weeks ago which only furthered his resolve.

The final breakthrough came from his French associate he rather thought may become a friend following their match. In her voice their was nothing but determination a trait he found all too intoxicating and was a staple of their institute. His team wasn’t giving up and neither was he. Steadfast and strong he gripped his wand tightly in his hand and readied himself for what was to come. Blinded or not he was a dragon, and no darkness could withstand his internal flame.

Finally! Luck finally gave them some sympathy and let the team's spells hit the target, the tickling charm they cast didn't hit but Reuben's green sparks charm certainly did hit the Durmstrang boy who was just taunting them. Airam managed to evade both the knoekback jinx and the Fire making spell II that was aiming for them after their own cast. Zyair's smokescreen spell worked and seemed to be affecting both the Durmstrang/Beauxbatons duellist and Zyair himself. Good, hopefully they can gain some kind of advantage from this. Ariam isn't sure if this is enough to turn their situation around, but they certainly did hope it is.

Phelan gasped quietly as the smoke began to pour from Zyair’s wand. Before he knew it, he couldn’t see a thing. The boy cursed under his breath. What were they going to do?

He could hear Aurelie, calling out in encouragement. She was right. This wasn’t over. What did he think, it was going to be easy? He nodded in the direction of his teammates. Or at least what he thought was their direction!

All they could do was keep going.

The time Reuben had taken to rest seemed to be a great idea, because his next spell was good enough to blind his opponent, and so was the Fumos cast by Zyair. Altough they had not done any real damage, the smoke and the sparks combined would be more than enough to make the chances of getting hit by the others a lot less. Although Ariam's flippendo had not succeeded, this round had still gone a lot better than any of the previous ones.

Well, okay, the smokescreen spell went great! But Zy also couldn't see a damn thing. Though that mattered little, the less everyone could see, the less they'd be hitting him or his teammates. Partially a win, wasn't it?

Now all he had to do was hope that his teammates had a little bit better aim than he did currently. So much smoke, jeez! How was anyone supposed to see?
