Camp 2024 Summer Duels: Match 2

Nikolai Volka | Durmstrang Third Year Duellist

It was undeniable that despite the light nature of the boy a cold darkness lived within him. When he drew from it he was utterly ruthless all emotion steeling replaced only by sheer determination and force of will. As he stood down his opponent that was all that could be seen in those electric blue eyes, watching analytically Reuben's stance for any indication of retaliation he kept the others in his peripheral constantly alert of both his allies and of incoming danger.

Nikolai let out a small chuckle to himself as the boys very own teammate bet him to the attack and with exactly the move he had prepared himself. Luckily for Nikolai it left Reuben completely unaware of the impending doom that loomed eerily over him. Flicking his wand Nikolai summoned the well of magic from within him and felt the warm tugging sensation of magic flow through his blood and into his wand before releasing the jinx that threw him back targeted on the shoulder in which he gripped his wand. Seemingly the impact was enough to throw him off not only physically but mentally. The piercing blue hold of Nikolai's eyes watched as a green flicker began to form at the tip of his enemies wand and yet upon its release it rebounded leaving Reuben to suffer his own attack.

Inspired by the first round he flashed a glance up to his blood brother who watched him with such adoration and pride he wondered just how lucky he truly was. As wonderful the feeling was, Nikolai had to stay on mission. There was victory in his horizon and he would be damned if anything would get in his way. Eyes still flared with determination and inspired by his chosen family he turned his gaze to his ally, "Not so bad yourself.", then in what was no more than a flicker he sent a signal to his teammates to formulate their second round knowing that they would understand the notion perfectly.

The team may typically be from opposing schools, but on the battlefield today they stood in perfect harmony with the melody of unity steadying their form.

Ugh this is already off to a bad start. Ariam thought as the uncontrollable laughter from the tickling charm escaped their mouth. The knockback jinx Ariam cast before they got hit missed its target, in fact it nearly hit their own teammate. Ariam felt guilty for the mess up but didn't want to dwell on it, they do not have the time, especially not when the whole team already got hit by spells.

Phelan’s eyes widened as Zyair shot a spell straight at him. He attempted to dodge, but was too slow, and before he knew it, his sleeve was on fire. He gasped, but kept his wand arm steady, ready for the next round. His mouth twitched up in satisfaction, each of his teammates’ spells had also been successful.

Phelan had decided to go for a tickling charm, maybe not the most aggressive attack, but it was the very beginning of the game. He felt there was no point being combative right off the bat. Unlike some people, he though, glaring at Zyair.

Glancing at his teammates, he caught Nicolai’s signal. He felt a flicker of annoyance. Who’d appointed him team leader? not you @Matthew Campbell Phelan’s just a little cranky : ) Even so, the boy nodded slightly at the Durmstrang boy, and brought his attention back to the match.

Talk about a hit and a miss, Zy was lucky enough to hit one of the other students on the other team, but gods he'd rather have missed than have to deal with the slug-vomiting charm. Unlucky that he didn't know who shot at him, he'd hold a nasty grudge.

Mentally he was recounting any statement about him being on his best today, but the duel had just started, they could still secure victory.

After the first bout of hard-to-follow spellcasting ended, Pyxis wondered if this sort of messiness was the normal for this group of duellists. Surprisingly not, as only two targets emerged when they unleashed their second set of spells. He was lucky a little while ago as the two duellists targeting him fumbled, but this time, Nikolai proved his skill at being slippery.

Zyair and Ariam both took aim at him. The former saw bubbles emerge from the tip of his wand, expanding in size and then blowing far left of Nikolai. The latter almost produced an exact copy of their previous Knockback Jinx, but this one was even stronger. Pyxis’ jaw dropped at the strength of Ariam’s magic. Maybe I should’ve gone to Castelobruxo. My family’s from South America anyways. I’d fit in like a glove with all that powerful magic. While Pyxis mentally tooted his own horn, Ariam’s spell went hurtling towards Nikolai, though an ill-placed laugh from the effects of the Tickling Charm threw their aim off ever so slightly. The Russian sidestepped it at the last moment as the energy blasted past him. If he turned to survey, he might find that being hit with the spell could have knocked him right off the stage.

Team Two’s wands all turned to Zyair then. Phelan called the incantation of a particularly fun spell and Pyxis locked in, excited to see the effect it would take on the student from Uagadou. In a different mind from his referee, Zyair managed to hop out of the way, but that put him in the danger zone of Aurélie and Nikolai. Aurélie sought to disrupt his targeting skills and she pulled off what Reuben could not. Green sparks went off around Zyair, and while the tiny explosions felt like nothing more than tickles, they were obnoxiously bright. Blinded by them, Zyair almost succeeded in avoiding Nikolai’s powerful fire charm, but the blaze caught him in the end. Before he could process the flames catching on his shirt, he bent over to expel another slug.

Pyxis nodded at the mildly eventful round before turning to Reuben who hadn’t moved an inch. He was lucky that the opposite team wasn’t targeting him. Maybe he was still blinking away the sparks in his eyes or reeling from the effects of Nikolai’s Flipendo. Whatever the issue was, Pyxis hoped he would snap into action soon. Get it together, buddy.

Nikolai Volka | Durmstrang Third Year Duellist

Durmstrang wasn't simply a school, it was a way of life. Generations of Durmstragonian's had bequeathed their knowledge down the years and trained a legion of dragons capable of anything. If there had been any doubt of Nikolai's draconic status his first international duel had proven to dismiss the notion.

The blonde had always had lightning in his electric blue eyes but every so often he embodied the very essence of it with a striking speed that evaded even the most powerful of foes. In the second round that lightning surged through him and he felt the amalgamation of all his training come to pass. Barely even acknowledging the bubbles, though mentally praising Zyair for the intelligent strategy, he focused his vision on Ariam. The duellist had an aura of power begin to surround them that drew the eye and warned Nikolai of impending danger. Suddenly their wand moved in a familiar casting, one that when he performed it seemed to have knocked Reuben right out of play for this turn.

Breathe, breathe, rather than his own voice in his head he heard that of his family, first Valentin then Hans. Time slowed around him as the lightning ran down him from his eyes to his feet and in an instant he found himself clear of the devastating spell. The power of it left nothing but destruction in its wake. Goading his opponents he turned to them with a calculated smile, "If you're going to target me, you could at least do me the honour of hitting."

Despite his confidence there was a flicker of knowing in his gaze. Fate may be on his side for now, but a fickle mistress was she and sooner or later if they continued to focus fire on him even the speed of light couldn't save him. Still fear never prayed on his senses for he knew that when that time came he would hold strong until he had devoted every last fibre of himself to victory for that was the Durmstrang way.

This duel was going wonderfully. The best duel ever. Reuben had managed to evade one Flippendo only to be met with another. "Ouch!", he said as he was sent to the floor. He quickly got up and tried to cast the Green Sparks Charm, but it seemed like he had gotten up way too fast, because he got the wand movement wrong and the spell backfired on him. Gods, could this day get any worse?

Reuben had learned from his failed cast that he needed some time to get his thoughts together, so in the second round, all he did was keep his eyes closed and breathe in and out. In and out. In and out. Till it was finally time for him to act. Thankfully, no spells had been sent his way, but it was not the same for his teammate Zyair, who was apparently being targeted. All the spells that his team had cast this round had also failed, but Reuben was not ready to lose hope. He pointed his wand at the other team and got ready to change the odds.

English Chilean Spanish Thoughts	Ariam's Trunk

This really doesn't seem to be Castelobruxo's season for sport, they lost the Quiddich game Acacia has been eagerly waiting for, and now it seems Ariam will lose this duel for Castelobruxo, great, just great. Can't wait to go home and tell their family about this. The Knockback Jinx Ariam cast felt like it was defintally going to work, and then they were forced to watch as their target, that Durmstrang boy, just narrowly dodging it. God this whole duel was starting to get on Ariam's nerves, does the goddess of luck just hate Castelobruxo? Why is this going so so badly? The Durmstrang even smiled and taunted them. It was never something Ariam liked to do but they were good at ignoring other people's voices and attitudes. Their own failure was always the only thing they couldn't block out. All they did in response to his words was a quick cold stare, before moving on and reorganising their thoughts. What can they do to bring luck on their side? It seems nothing they do is working.

Aurélie was on a roll. Sure, she'd practised a lot for this duel. Sure, she was pretty much running on adrenaline right now. But she hadn't expected to land both of her spells so far perfectly. And while Phelan's softening charm hadn't hit it's mark, the rest of Team Beauxbatons-Durmstrang was doing surprisingly well. Hopefully, the match would keep going this way and the French girl would get to experience the thrill of winning her first official duel.

Aurélie looked over at her teammates, proud. She would've sent them a thumbs-up, but was afraid of losing hold of her wand. Instead, she opted for a large grin. Maybe all that practising was going to finally pay off.
