A Duel to start the new year

| Honestly, she just wanted to try this spell out. She had no idea if she would be mildly successful with even casting it. The incantation was incredibly long, and for what reason? Someone may just hit her while she's still in the middle of sayin it. So, she held off on casting and waited for Prat to throw his spell before she did. Sparks charms weren't a bad idea. Getting blinded was a terrible idea, however. Hadn't Prat cast that last time he was able to throw a spell? Regardless, she took a step in the other direction just as she did in the first round of spells and came out unscathed. Alyssea readjusted her shoulders and held out her wand, pointing right at Prat as she enunciated each word. "Nec Divinos Crepitus." Just like that, silver sparks darted into his direction and blew the ground right up. The pure joy that burst on her face was unmistakeable. The first time she'd ever seen the Cracker Jinx (and promptly forgot about it) was when Slava demonstrated it as his favourite spell at last year's summer camp. Then, she felt its effects in the duel against Ravenclaw that was, dare she say, unevenly matched. Once the excitement died down, she felt sympathy for Prat. Cracker Jinx was awful. |

Prat was now 0-2, not only did he miss the same spell twice he also got hit by Alyssea's spell. The Cracker jinx, not only it blew up the floor below him. Prat could feel the after effects of this spell. Not only was his worldview shocked, so was his body. Prat wasn't expecting her to have a spell this grand that it would topple him all over and then blow him. This was like his version of having your house set on fire and then your insurance company telling you how you won't be getting that insurance money.
Prat had to now contemplate his next move very seriously, he had already wasted enough chances to cast a spell and had somehow missed everything he'd shot at the badger. Her presence was almost like that of a satan to him at this point. A Badger Satan if you would. Scurrying around Prat grabbed his wand, fixing his clothes as fast as he could, this was his only chance now, he had already gotten hurt and elongating this duel further would only bring about his defeat. He knew he had to do something soon, something that would even the odds for him, and perhaps bring luck to his side.

The duel continues and wow, this really isn't going well for Prat. Aston watched as his friend missed yet another spell he tried to cast at Alyssea, this time it was Flipendo, probably a better choice than green sparks. The change in spells didn't help him though since Alyssea once again narrowly dodged it. At least the cast was impressive to look at.
Alyssea had much better luck, Aston isn't sure if it's just the experience of being a year above then or plain old luck. Either way it's working for her. After she dodged the knockback jinx cast by Prat she cast the tickling charm at him. Aston was slightly surprised at the choice, it was a first year spell, not that there's anything wrong with that. He just expected the second year spells to be better and thus more used. No matter, since the spell certainly did its purpose. Prat clearly tried to dodge it but it didn't stop the inevitable. Aston once again watched as Prat got hurt, this time he got thrown back, as the name of the spell suggested. That cannot have been comfortable, I might have to take him to the hospital wing after this. God damn it, I told him this isn't a good idea.

| There's a saying that if you say something and don't want to jinx it, knock on wood three times. Unfortunately, the piste is too far from the walls and the walls aren't even wood (at least, Alyssea doesn't remember them being wood), so she just had to keep her mouth shut. Not shut the way Prat's was earlier, just shut up unless she was saying a spell. Nothing about feeling good about the way this was going. Nope. Part of that included reverting back to First year spells. Pulling off the Tongue-Tying Curse from Second year and then the Cracker Jinx from Third straight after felt like playing with fire. Third time was either the charm or a nightmare and Alyssea wasn't prepared to deal with that. What should've been her opening spell came back for round four. A quick point and yell of "Rictusempra!" and then dodging Prat's Knockback Jinx made up for the round. Quick, sweet, and simple. It was weird, however, not being on fire, or not coughing up phlegm, or dancing to some random tango that she would never have music to. Alyssea breathed deeply. Perhaps spending more time on the racing fields or dodging bludgers heightened her senses. There was a lot more danger in broom sports than here at the piste, anyway. |

Prat's first duel against a third year old was a dud. None of his spells had landed as of now. Going from green sparks charm to knockback jinx to other spell did not work out in his favour much to his dismay. It wasn't as if this was his first time trying to cast spells. However she kept slipping out of his grasp. It seemed as if the chance for a nicely prepared attack had slipped away and now he only had to do whatever to match the tempo of the match she had already set.
Getting his self rocked by the previous jinx was already bad enough, he was still suffering the damage for it only to now getting rictusempra as he buckled over in laughter. With his already bad and diminishing control on the duel weakening even further as the spell took effect. The duel was almost like experiencing the twilight movies again for the first time, something he willingly put himself in and then proceeded to not enjoy anything about it. Prat is his mind was already thinking about the fastest time it'd take to reach the hospital wing and heal up. Atleast then he would be back to duel her again.

This is all starting to feel repetitive and ridiculous, is this some kind of cruel joke a higher being is playing on Prat? Such was the thoughts of Aston when he saw a similar scene play out in this duel again. Prat casts Flipendo, the knockback jinx, it was quite a good one, if only Alyssea didn't dodge his spell, again. The first few times she dodged it Aston assumed it was skills and experience, no offence to her but dodging this many has to because of some kind of luck. The whole duel Alyssea didn't get hit once, a stark contrast to Prat, who is looking increasingly bad.
Alyssea casts Tarantallegra at Prat after her dodge, it hits the target to no surprise. Whatever deity is watching over them, if there is one, is definitely biased to Alyssea, how else does this keep happening? Aston watched as Prat was launched into some kind of tap dancing. It didn't look good but it did its job of distracting Prat. It will probably affect his accuracy among other things the next time he tries to cast a spell. Prat is so not winning this, normally he's far better, I guess it's the magic power of third years. The hospital wing is down stairs right?

Prat had now missed more spells than the muggle woman with crossed eyes who tried shooting her boyfriend. Atleast his misery would end soon as the duel seemed to be coming to an end. Prat wasn't sure if this could even count as a learning experience. Losing experience would imply he learned something. Here, all he learned was missing spell after spell and getting hit after hit. If he did not have his glasses, someone would probably assume he was either blind or had buttons for eyes in his head.
Prat felt how getting blown up wasn't even as bad as getting charmed to laugh and then proceeded by having to dance. This was almost a humiliation ritual in his mind. Atleast he would remember how bad this duel was for future. He could not possibly go lower than this. Missing all spells is an absolute 0 and thus nothing he could even do further could make it any less. The only way left was up. Maybe he would look back on this duel in years to come and think about how he got humbled or maybe it'll be the duel that decides how and why he should stop even trying duelling. Most obvious choice however, it's probably just bad luck and the next time he steps up with his wand, he'll have better fortune and skills to boast.

| What was another one of her classic openings became her round five spell. There was a common theme in that she chose spells that would impair someone's accuracy and/or evasion while doing a little bit of damage. When she duelled with people, the way the dancing and laughing stacked from multiple shots of the same spells often set the trajectory for how well the duel would go. Funny enough, she didn't make that opening for herself. She never thought about duelling tactics that deeply until she actually did it. Zach had been the one to (indirectly) teach her that slow and steady does, in fact, win the race and spells like these were dark horses. She liked spontaneity, making opponents question her every move because she never had a consistent line of thought. But her duelling openings? Constant. They were reliable and hadn't failed her yet. Alyssea did feel a bit bad for Prat. He still hadn't hit her which wasn't great for morale. In a way, Alyssea was glad, though. She always thought herself to be hard to hit, graceful in movements, and a great evader. Sportspeople were scary, though, and even if she worked on evasion, it was usually never enough. |

Aston unknowingly watched the final spells of the duel be cast. It seems both of the duellist chose the same spell, the knockback jinx, Flipendo. Prat managed to cast it despite the horrible dancing he was being forced to do. Only to have Alyssea move out of the way of it again, leaving her with not even a scratch. Prat was left at the opposite end of the spectrum. Alyssea responded to Prat's spell with a knockback jinx of her own. Aston watch attentively as Prat moved away, or rather, tried to move away. He was so close to actually avoiding it but it just wasn't enough. Prat got hit on the side by the spell and was thrown back and didn't get back up. Aston quickly announced to duel to be over and that Alyssea was the victor.
He rushed over to check up on Prat, who was passed out on the floor. Looking over to Alyssea Aston asked "We take him to the hospital wing right? I'm just gonna pick him up" Aston still wasn't quite sure about this part of the process but he figured that was the only logical way. "Alyssea right? Is it okay if you help me get him down there? Thanks, by the way the duel was great!"
