Reid about a phaidros Moon
Time - 12:10 am
Location: Astronomy Tower
Thurston took a look around of his class. The night was quiet and the night of full moon was approaching, slowly, threateningly like a beast ready to catch him off guard. But luckily it was not as if Thurston was dreading this existence, this curse as many call it. It was as much a curse as it was a ticket to freedom for him and for that he was thankful.
But enough of these thoughts, he had a class to concentrate on. ”As I mentioned last week, we will start with something different today. This will be a project where you will work in a group of two. How you proceed with the execution of this project after I sort you into groups and tell you the topic is totally up to you-” he instructed with his usual lack of emotions, not that he was emotionless, it was just hard to pick up on his behaviour. He did not feel close to the students, but some might notice the way his eyes lit up whenever he began rambling about the universe.
Thurston explained to the students what he expected of them for this project. ”So this project will be about the moon, or to be more specific, about the phases of the moon. It is up to you how you proceed with the project as long as you keep to the topic and include all phases of the moon. You will have two weeks for this project-”
The young man now began to call pairs of two students to his desk and gave him a sheet of paper with all the information he wanted to include, as well as some pages they could read in their astronomy book to help getting the necessary information of the project.
At some point he called out for…
”Miss Phaedra Stavrou and Mister Reid Kovacs”
He proceeded with giving them the project information before sending them back to their seats. ”You might want to start now”

Reid about a phaidros Moon
PROFESSOR Barclay's voice lulled him into sleep a lot of the times, if there was a spell to fake his eyes being open, he would love to know it. Astronomy was interesting to him, he actually liked it, but he found it not as compelling with Barclay's humdrum narration. But there was a method to his problems, which was sleeping copious amount of hours before his class of Astronomy. Before this, he had slept so much that he perhaps would have seemed like he was in a coma. It paid off, in some sense, but Reid nearly found himself zoning out into the vast cosmos of the universe himself when Barclay began talking about the moons.
THIS project seemed rudimentary enough, but even he knew himself enough to know that he often overcomplicated things and it wouldn't surprise him if he failed. But what was worse was that he was going to be paired with another student, who might just despise him after this project. Reid held himself optimistic though, perhaps he wouldn't do so bad this time around.
TYPICALLY, he was just used to taking notes and leaving, his look was secondary. Now he found himself adjusting his tie underneath his cardigan, fixing his robes, and even fixing his lazy posture as if he was going to be interviewed soon. One by one, Reid watched students come to his desk, finding himself growing anxious at the fact that most of the unstudious kids were being paired off.
THE student's comfort was knowing that he would be paired with someone just as bad as he was, which seemed like he would luck out this time around. It only meant that he wouldn't have to lag the other student behind, but it seemed like he was going to actually have to do more than he usually would. Reid slumped forward a little, watching Barclay call the others. That was until he heard his name besides Phaedra. He closed his eyes for a moment, fear at the fact that he was paired off with not only a Ravenclaw, but one that he heard good things of. By this time, he had spent more time observing other people rather than the Professor himself.
IT was all by speculative opinion and as far as he was concerned, him and Phaedra were opposites on the intelligence spectrum. He also had only met Phaedra on the train with the others and she had a formality that he was just getting used to. Her personality wasn't off-putting, it was the opinion she would have at the end of this project that he worried over.
WHAT if he seemed stupid to her the whole way? Dymphna was gracious enough not to make him think he was, but even he found himself a skeptic around her. It was one thing to be ignorant to your own stupidity, but it was another to understand that you weren't the brightest wand in the bunch. Being in a house that didn't exactly have the best reputation wasn't any better.
STILL, he tried not to scare himself out of the idea of working with her because it surely wouldn't be as bad as he imagined, right? But enough about the dramatics, he batted the doubts that harkened his attention. He brought himself to the desk and took the paper that Barclay held out to him. Reid sat himself down where the professor sent them and pulled his black reading glasses that hung from his cardigan. He turned to Phaedra, "Is this a paper? Or a presentation?" His voice seemed meek, he couldn't help but question things already. Barclay gave them free reign on it, but Reid was used to orders, not freedom to do what he wanted.

Reid about a phaidros Moon
Another Wednesday night, another Astronomy lesson.
Despite its inconvenient schedule and frigid environment, Phaedra wholeheartedly enjoyed the lessons. They served as one of the few instances where she could dream up a life that could've been, or get caught up in wishes on a star whenever she was free to do so. A lost cause she knew, but a sweet escape nonetheless.
When the professor made his announcement, Phaedra gave a silent sigh through her nose, pulling her robes tighter around her for warmth. Phaedra was the type of student who preferred working alone; others just slowed her down. Still, she was not incognisant to the fact that some professors put a heavy emphasis on teamwork, so for now, she would have to do what was expected. She was not the first student to hate group work and wouldn't be the last.
Black shoes tapped lightly on the floor for the minute or two that Professor Barclay handed out his assignments, her leg bouncing both in impatience and in an attempt to combat the utter cold that she was feeling. Her own name was eventually called out, followed by another that she had grown to know through mutual connections; Reid Kovacs, a Hufflepuff in her year. His name was the gist of all that she knew of him, that and he was a damned good Quidditch player. But when it came to the boy's competence off-field, Phaedra was completely unaware of where he stood. Despite the many times that she had compulsively stalked the class rankings every morning after breakfast, not once had her eyes been drawn to a Reid Kovacs near the top. It was safe to assume that he was likely average in that area.
Regardless, Phaedra still had high expectations not only for herself but for anyone (un)lucky enough to get paired up with her. The badger house had surprisingly won the House Cup three times in a row now and although she still found the average Hufflepuff to be annoying and just as hoity-toity as they accused the other Houses of being, they definitely were not as useless as they were portrayed to be.
It was somehow alarming and a relief all at once, being paired up with Reid. Sure, he wasn't top ranking, but that also meant he was no mark-obsessed, wise-arse that she would have to butt heads with for creative control over the project. If she could take charge and get him to do what she wanted and do it well, it would all be worth it.
Following after Reid, her book bag swung loosely from her shoulder as she made her way to a pair of empty desks. Her brain was already buzzing with ideas by the time she sat down. After smoothing her parchment dead centre in front of her, she laid her quill and inkwell to its left side and zipped her bag shut again. An organised desk was an organised mind, after all.
"Professor said we can do whatever we want,"Phaedra reminded him while reaching for her quill, the feathers shimmering under the moonlight in magnificent hues of blue. The nib was placed into black ink where it collected, and without pause, Phaedra took to the corner of the parchment to brainstorm. "We could make a diagram or model of some sort, for example."
She took his mention of an essay to mind and listed it under the other in neat handwriting, a thoughtful curl tugging at the corners of her mouth. "But going off of what you said, we could write something. Can't fail at that," Phaedra commented after a second of silence, "Just a bit typical, I think," she said sincerely, of the opinion that a project should be more interesting than the usual short essays they were given for homework. Having a project based on visuals would be a great way of proving to the professor that the information was well-stored in their understanding. Going above and beyond for a better mark was her forte.
Raising away from the parchment, a blot of ink from fell onto her free hand and she was quick to rub it away with a slight grimace. For the first time in that night, Phaedra turned to the boy to look him in the eyes, straight-faced and likely coming across as more bored than she intended, features accentuated in the pale light.
"Any other ideas you've got to pitch in? We've got two weeks and I want to get started as soon as possible."

Reid about a phaidros Moon
Reid picked up on a cue or some sort of suggestion that they should try something beyond a paper. He would have to agree without a doubt, plus it beat writing a whole paper by hand. The thought of it turned him off completely. His hand produced a black ballpoint pen from the pocket of his robe rather than a quill. He had asked his parents to send him some, finding no sense in using a quill since it ran out of ink so quickly.
It was more comfortable for him too, while it was a very muggle thing to have, Reid followed a very utilitarian lifestyle. The student fell silent for a few moments, his eyes were glued on one of the models in the room with obsessive interest. "We should probably do a model." he blurted. His voice almost cracked a little at the end, a curse of his growing nature. Confidence seeped into his heart as he hitched himself onto some train of thought. He broke his gaze from it and opened his notebook, a standard muggle notebook with lines to try and control him. In it, she could probably see his messy handwriting.
It often broke from its boundaries, with stray marks that had no purpose but were mere mistakes. It lacked detail, but he somehow had a method in organizing his chaotic handiwork. But he wasn't trying to write something down and instead opted for the clean sheet on the back of his notes. He drew something on his paper since he worked best with seeing visuals. The pen made no noise, it was a gel ink after all, it lacked the scratching that came with a quill.
"So ..." He drew eight spheres in a circle and paused. "It looks sort of like a clock, dunnit? That's one idea. We could make a sort of clock where the hand falls on each phase." He skipped the semantics and jumped into the next idea immediately. He pressed the tip of the pen against the paper and fell into another lulled silence. "This one is kind of difficult to be honest, it kind of requires some messing around with and there's probably a lot measuring that we should do." He was largely informal with his speech in contrast to Phaedra's.
His excitement came in short bursts, grappling with trying not to be too obnoxious and trying not to seem like he was ignorant of the project. But his interest in doing the model overtook his worries about working with Phaedra in a flash, especially after what he was thinking of. "We could use candlelight as the sun's rays and pretty much make a model of the Earth with eight moons all around it."
He drew as he spoke, finding fluidity in the visuals instead of just talking about it. "It shows people the moons in real time and also the position of the moon with where the earth is." The high from his inspired tirade ended and he glanced back at Phaedra, hiding the worry from his brow. What if he didn't even make sense? He barely recalled what he even said the last few seconds ago. The class would be ending soon, so he wanted to show her that the gears in his head actually turned despite his looks.
"Trouble usually finds me."

Reid about a phaidros Moon
xxxxPhaedra sat there, waiting for his input until he suddenly whipped out a ballpoint pen. The action caught her off guard, yet the raise of her brows indicated quiet fascination. She somewhat recalled muggles using those stick-like contraptions to write with, but this was a first seeing one so closely that she could reach over and touch it. She would have asked the boy what the utensil was called and if it were really true that they were more convenient, but she did not want to seem silly for raising the question, and most importantly, it wasn't relevant to their assignment. Her curiosity would have to wait for later.
xxxxThere sat an air of silence between them as he seemed to ruminate over one of the classroom's models. Phaedra followed his gaze to it, but was unmatched in his enthusiasm. "A model it is, then," she said plainly, before taking it upon herself to lean forward and peer down at his notebook with the oddly thin paper. She could see through it that he had written something on the page previous— a bit messy, that and his handwriting, if she were honest.
xxxxAs he scribbled and talked, she pulled back as an excuse to eye the boy's features; not maliciously but rather in deep contemplation, understanding the likelihood that he must have been related to muggles to some degree. While many of lessons from her home tutors went in one ear and out the other, the same couldn't be said for Reid's explanation and Phaedra was able to follow along accordingly. It must have been the age similarity; kids just knew how to speak to another.
xxxxA model like a clock? Well, she didn't know what to make of that, but it was something to start with. Propping her elbow onto the table, she rested her head on her fist and stared at the eight spheres he drew in a circle. They were to represent the moon phases; that was easy enough to grasp. But how could they get the hands to work? She had no experience or even interest with clockwork. Reid seemed to have thought about that complication though, because before she could butt in and ask for clarification he was already on to his next idea.
xxxxPhaedra watched him draw some more, and after visualising a candle for the sun's rays she perked up instantly. "That one," she said with a simple nod of approval. "The one with the candle. I like it." She felt that the idea was a perfect blend of being visual enough for an onlooker to get the premise, interactive and daresay, even fun to work on. Maybe working with Reid wouldn't be so bad after all. He had already brainstormed so much already— maybe he could've had a place for him in Ravenclaw had it not been for the Sorting Hat's final verdict.
xxxxShe turned back to her own parchment, nearly empty compared to his notes. "I have things we can use - what, candles, a board, some paint? I'll just have to dig through my trunk for them. But I'm trying to think of what we can use to symbolise the Earth and moons..." she trailed off, reaching for her quill to roll the stem between her fingers.

Reid about a phaidros Moon
Relief spread through his system as he was happy to find a middle ground that both of them could agree upon, he wasn't ready to face the embarrassment of being incompetent. Back home, he always had trouble explaining to his teachers and his parents about what he was trying to get at. It was all out of nerves and despite how intimidating Phaedra was at times, he managed to settle comfortably.
The cardigan that hugged him relaxed as his shoulders seemed to give way, the ink-stained fingertips under his deck uncurled rather painfully and were brought to rest atop of his scribbled paper. A hand swept across the page, smearing some of the fresh globs of black that were strewn on the paper. His green eyes watched her think about the possibilities, turning his own head to look around the room. "Well ..."
A drumming of his fingers gingerly sounded an irregular beat against the old wood desk, his other hand seemed to curl and rest above his chin to support it. "Mum makes paper mache balls for Christmas, she'd take a balloon and cover it, then pop it when it's all dried up." He remembered it clearly, they couldn't get the actual ornaments, it was a rather different time that one year. On one of his nights in Derby, he came down to see his mum steadily working on the ornaments. His feet came down, almost wincing at the cold bite of their hardwood floor and finding relief in the rug that his feet touched a few steps after.
Curious as ever, he asked what she had been doing and he listened to her explain it in the glow of their tree. A warm and reddish hue bounced off his mother's features, having shown him what she was doing in a hushed tone. His dad had fallen asleep on the couch again, on his stomach was a pile of newspapers that she had been using. There was a smell of wet paper and a smell of some glue-like chemical that made him scrunch his nose. But the smell of cinnamon and cardamon relaxed him.
In the seconds he spent within the pause, his memory settled of him sitting cross-legged in front of their coffee table, helping his mum with it. Every Christmas, they did it and had been a bit of a family tradition since. But it hasn't been since he left for Hogwarts. His hand came down to pick up his pen again as his voice broke through the momentary silence.
"I have uninflated balloons from just different birthdays and stuff that went on at the school, we could use those and make the planets that way." He remembered the celebration Max held and the other birthdays he's attended. He's accumulated a decent amount of balloons that he was intending on using one day. But what they were gonna be used for was probably nothing that benevolent, he definitely didn't know how to make balloon animals.
"Trouble usually finds me."
