A Duel to start the new year

Aston thought it was a normal Sunday, the new school year started recently, it was only the second weekend. But on this merry day Aston found himself in the duelling club refereeing a duel. The fact that he was there was not the weird part, he has been here a few times to watch duels, despite him not being a Duellist Aston did find the sport nice to watch. The occasional site of someone's robes getting burned or someone getting thrown around in the air was a beautiful view for the half blood. So much more variety of violence then the usual muggle fights, there were even fire involved sometimes! So fun.
When he got there today Aston quickly found Prat, who apparently decided it was a good idea to duel a third year. Aston assumed nothing would have come of it, since they didn't have a referee. But he was quickly proven wrong when he found himself standing the fount being declared as the referee they oh so desperately needed. Sure he did volunteer cause they need someone, Aston did try to make it clear this was his first so please don't blame him if he screws up. I really need to stop being so nervous god damn it!
With an exhale and the finally thought of Okay I got this, just copy what all the other referees do. Aston straightened his posture and yelled out in a voice he thinks is loud enough, "Draw your wands! Ready! Begin!" God he was nervous, but the chance of seeing some kind of Incendio spell up close is great. There's a second Incendio spell right? Incendio Duo or something like that? That will be fun to see! That wishful thinking really did make Aston fell much better about all this.

| It had been a while since Alyssea stepped foot into this space. Was it that duel against Alan Vanes that was her last or was it the winter stage? She couldn’t quite remember now. Either way, it had been months since she stepped down and away from the duelling piste in favour of the throes of Quidditch and Broom Racing. Both teams had gone through significant roster changes, so Alyssea had to adjust accordingly. No use acting like a brand-new first-string chaser if she was the second-most senior of them with one game under her belt. So, why had she come back? When she found out Clark had been pulled out of Hogwarts, that left Alyssea to ponder the idea of going back to the sport. She loved being a duellist; the thrill of facing off peers in an equal battle of wits was so different to the outdoor fields. But she had already sunk her knees deep into Quidditch and couldn't back out now. Alyssea would just have to stick it out for the rest of the year. That didn't mean she could never come back, of course. When the weather was awful and her energy restless, the training dummies were free game for her to hit to her heart's content. If she had just learned a new offensive spell in class (which was a small handful now that the year was starting), then the dummies would be the first to test it. The space was still special, even if she didn't frequent it as often as she used to. Today, she threw herself into a duel. She had never seen these kids before, so they were probably new. Or, wait, what if they were just the year below her? Either they were brand new to the piste or they joined in time for the spring stages when Alyssea said goodbye. Probably should've made some small talk before agreeing to this so that she knew exactly who to address as what. Oh, well, as long as she didn't embarrass herself with the wrong names. She gave a brisk nod. "Alyssea Brown," she introduced herself. It had been a while since Alyssea stepped foot into the space and had a proper duel. She was rusty; hopefully it wouldn't throw off her entire game. As she raised her wand, she looked at the other guy's eyes. "Don't expect too much. I haven't duelled in months." |

A Duel to start the new year

This wasn't Prat's first time looking for a duel or even being in one. As someone who wished to join the roster for Slytherin's Duelling Team, Prat was a frequent visitor to the duelling club. Each time visiting to witness a new duel take place. However all the duels Prat had until now were unofficial and against either Year one students or people his own age.
Somehow things ended in such a way that Prat ended up in a duel against an Year 3 student, she certainly looked older than him atleast. Sooner even Aston was found and talked into acting as a Moderator for them. Prat knew this would atleast be a half decent experience. After duelling people from his own year and below Prat had gotten bored and believed his growth that stunted.
Duelling against a harder opponent might motivate him to work harder for the rest of school year as he prepare for his eventual duels against other people. Prat wished to use this duel as a training grounds of sort, to test the spell combinations in his arsenal upon graduation. Noticing that it was about to start Prat removed his Robe and Folded his sleeves up before Letting his opponent know his name. Squaring up with wand in hand Prat was ready with the strategy he had in mind.

Prat cannot cast spells for one round
Aston watched attentively as the duel began. Prat cast the green sparks charm, impressive but not unexpected to Aston. His friend was always good at charms and defence against the dark arts, he's pretty sure he plans to learn third year spells from the library sometimes. As the spell was cast they quickly realised that the spells didn't land. Unfortunately for Prat Alyssea dodged away from his spell just in time and threw one of her own at him.
It was a Tongue-Tying Spell Alyssea cast, I think we're going to learn that spell this year? It is nice to see it in action before the class. Prat could not dodge like Alyssea did just before and got hit. Leaving him silent and presumably unable to cast spells. Aston certainly does feel nervous for Prat, sure he is supposed to be a neutral referee and he would never cheat to help Prat. But he is still totally rooting for him, that's his friend of course! Also it will be really cool if a second year managed to defeat a third year, even if the third year said that she hasn't duelled in months. Aston stood, wondering what will Prat do now, it's not like he can really cast spells like this, right? This is only the spells they cast, plenty of time for Prat to figure it out.

| The wonderful thing about being older was having more spells to try out. The bad thing about being older was figuring out which would be the best opening spell. It was too obvious (if anyone ever cared to study her duelling style) that she used dancing feet or tickling as an opening. They proved her well on numerous occasions, so could you really blame a girl for regressing to the most reliable opening? For once, however, Alyssea chose a different spell. Impairing Prat was still on the agenda, just in a different way. She raised her wand and made a quick scribble in the air, imagining Prat's mouth disappearing into his skin. Focus and visualisation was key to any spell. "Mimblewimble." She barely had time to see if it landed when the familiar incantation of a sparks charm lit up the place. Alyssea swiftly turned the other way, eyes closed in the hopes of not going blind. When her stance steadied, she opened them and found the floor with a few blinks. She couldn't help the relief that washed over her as the situation settled in. Prat's mouth had gone poof and she hadn't broken a leg from dodging. Alyssea readjusted her stance. Not bad, she thought. Was it time to knock on wood? Hopefully this wouldn't be the last time she'd land a hit. |

A Duel to start the new year

Prat had already shaken off his nerves prior to the duel however shooting that charm and then it missing to hit the badger was somewhat of a blow to his confidence. The confidence he had built up trying to calm himself might have worked against him, making him think it was going to be a cake walk going up against a senior. Seeing Alyssea dodge before the charm hit her only for him to be hit with Tongue-Tying spell used by her, a third year spell which Prat could not dodge and instead had to suffer it's effects. Losing the ability to cast a spell might have disoriented any other year two wizard, Prat on the other hand relished this chance.
He knew worst comes to worst he'd lose to an opponent already regarded with higher skill than him, no shame in that. Winning on the other hand would bring him so much bragging rights among the classmates, A second year beating a third year that too when it looks like he has no way out. He had no reputation to lose as of now. Deciding to push on forward Prat quickly improvised his strategy accounting for the loss of casting ability. He knew he'd have to pull an unorthodox move to turn the tides in his favour.

ReducioPrat dodges, but no spell target him so nothing happenens.
The next few minutes were rather uneventful. No one casts any attack spells, Prat couldn't even cast any spells. But he did finally regain the ability to talk which is good, for him at least. Alyssea probably would've liked him to be silent for a bit longer. Aston kept watching, focusing on the match. Prat seems concentrated, well more concentrated than usual. I guess he's focusing on dodges spells that come his way? Though no spells did go for him since Alyssea chose to cast one on herself instead.
Alyssea casts a spell Aston doesn't know, I don't think we will learn the Bravery charm till next year. The disadvantage of duelling a student a year above your own was obvious. Still, no one got hurt yet so there is still plenty of time for everyone, especially Prat, to figure out what to do. I really do want to cheer for him but I shouldn't.
The effect of the bravery charm wasn't obvious but Aston does know what it does. He probably read it somewhere, or was it from another duel he watched? Either way he does know it does what its name implies, it makes the target more brave. Extra bravery is good cause it makes the target more calm, which will help their spell casting. It feels so weird being quiet this whole time but I have nothing to say, oh well, quiet is probably better for them.

Prat was almost ready to dodge whatever spell the badger satan was preparing to throw at him, only for her to cast a charm that did not even affect him. Sure, he breathed a sigh of relief seeing how he wouldn't be getting hurt in a situation where he could not cast a jinx back but this meant her having an overall higher accuracy now. Prat knew the next spell that might come to him may very well hit him hard and fast. On further recollection he was no more thinking he was cooked. The duel was not going that badly for him. Instead he was unharmed as of now and prepared to continue with his next attack.
Prat really wished he should've learnt the dada spells an year ahead before coming to this duel. "i am like a deer in headlights with roller blades on trying to run up an hill while it's raining" is all his brain could think of at that moment. After the recent moment of bamboozlement Prat wondered what his best strategy for the future would be. If only the charm in the beginning had worked in his favour the tides could have been changed, shaking it off Prat told himself yet again that fixating on past will not help. Getting his wand into a better grip Prat prepared for his next course of action as he.....

| There was one thing Alyssea learned from her last duel and that was patience. Too often had she thrown spells in the hope luck would be on her side, only for it to completely sway in her opponent's favour and snatch a win from under her feet. That was what caused her to lose her final duel, too. Too much arrogance thinking the tables turned in their favour cost her the win. Patience. If Prat couldn't cast a spell, there wasn't much to do but actively dodge. In the meantime, Alyssea decided to give herself a little boost. She pointed right at her right and closed her eyes, imagining a bright blue light filling her chest. "Animosus." When she opened her eyes, the bright blue light dissipated and she felt her confidence go right up. She wasn't calm; she would need the Cheering Charm for that, but it was enough to make her feel better about everything else. Prat's mouth had come back, meaning she had to be on the offensive now. Or play defensively and make it continuously hard for Prat to hit her. But where was the fun in that? Now she just had to figure out which spell to throw this time around. |

Aston couldn't help but feel pessimistic for his friend. Once more the spell he cast didn't meet his target, he watched as Prat threw out another green Sparks charm that Alyssea avoided by quickly dodging away from it again. Prat cast it pretty well, it just seems that luck really isn't on his side today. As proven by how Alyssea kept dodging all his spells.Just like the last time, third years really are just better I guess. Come on Prat you can do better. After the dodge Alyssea quickly got herself ready and cast a Cracker Jinx. Unlike Prat two attempts at the Green Sparks charm this one very much did hit its target. Aston winced at how all the wizard crackers landed right up close to Prat and exploded. It must have hurt quite a bit, not that Aston has much experience with them. This is why I don't duel, that stuff cannot be pleasant. Aston thought, completely forgetting how unpleasant falling off your broom or getting hit with a bludger is in quidditch.
As the match continued Aston just kept thinking of all the different ways a match can go badly, all the different spells means so many different ways to get hurt. There's the fire spells, the knock back jinx, the slug vomiting charm, the cracker jinx of course, and even more. Fun as heck to watch but it must be a pain to deal with. The sound of another spell being cast pulled Aston out of his thoughts and he quickly went back to paying full attention to the duel.
