Today wasn't a good day for River. Sure, some people would probably laugh at her if they heard why she was hiding up in the Owlery on a Saturday morning with tear tracks down her cheeks, but she wasn't quite in the state to care.

She hadn't even attempted to slightly dress up as she was wont to do most weekends when she was no longer forced to wear her uniform robes. Gone was her preferred silky green blouse paired with a black vest, jeans and ankle boots like the outfit she had worn the previous weekend. Now, all she could stand to wear were the largest, softest and comfiest clothes she could find in her trunk.

Pulling her sleeves over her hands, she sniffled and wiped at her nose and cheeks. She tried to get rid of the salty drops, perhaps a bit too harshly as seen by her quickly reddening eyes and nose. However, it was no use. They were quickly replaced as more and more tears dripped down to her chin where the saline drops eventually fell down onto her denim covered knees. She hugged her legs tighter to her chest and buried her face into her knees.

She pondered back on why she was here in the first place.

Today was the anniversary of the death of one of her oldest friends from when she was much younger. Sylvie had been a Barred Grass Snake that River had spent many of her development years with, a steady presence who kept her company during those lonely years. She missed her so much, her first friend, her first confidant (no matter that it was unlikely that she ever really understood the things River told her).

It was this particular day that River tended to dread more than most, as her hyperthymesia caused her to remember the moment she found Sylvie in perfect excruciating detail. It had been an accident, she knew that well after years of therapy with a mind healer, but that didn't mean her death didn't weigh down on her shoulders any less.

Scenes flashed through her mind of finding Sylvie, the ensuing cleansing, prayers and Sylvie's funeral pyre, small as it was. She sobbed harder as her nose was filled with the faint scent of fire and ash; her eyes stung with memories of smoke.

Nótt tried to comfort River as much as she could, keeping close as tears fell from her eyes. It was unlikely that Nótt would understand her human emotions, but her presence was reassuring all the same. Nótt offered cuddles and her sleek fur to be pet by tear-stained hands. Her efforts awarded her a pain-filled smile.

River allowed the sounds of fluttering wings and constant hoots coming from the various owls sheltered in the Owlery to pass over her. Her sobs seemed to be muffled by the excess noise. Her hands roamed over her familiar's soft fur, taking comfort in Nótt's constant presence.

She hoped today would be over soon.

She was tired of crying.

Of mourning.

Of remembering.

Matilde trudged up the steps of the owlery, the letter in her hand already addressed and sealed. She'd always liked this place, with its high rafters filled with owls in all different types, colors, and sizes. She occasionally wished she had an owl of her own to take to Hogwarts, for convenience reasons. Even so, she wouldn't trade her little gray bunny for anything in the world. Besides, she had her family owl, Bruin.

The reason she had come all the way up to the west tower today was to send a letter to her friend at Beauxbatons. Today, a school owl would have to do, her mother wouldn't let Matilde use Bruin for sending letters to France.

Matilde hummed to herself as she reached the top step and bustled over to one of the school's birds. She was a beautiful barred owl, one of Matilde's favorites. The girl whispered a greeting to the bird as she carefully tied the letter to her leg.

Suddenly she heard a noise. Matilde turned around, startled to see she wasn't alone. "Oh, hello!" she said to the girl, a friendly tone to her voice. Looking closer at the girl, Matilde noticed her face was tear streaked. The young Hufflepuff frowned, taking a cautious step toward her.

"Are you alright?"

It was another day, another great day at Hogwarts. Well, not for everyone maybe. Who knows? At least it was for Eugenia. Getting out of the barrel, she walked up towards the Owlery, choosing to go the longer way to admire the view from the castle windows. It was an awesome view. The Greek girl paused. She took a deep breath of the fresh air, looked around, and continued her journey. Not necessarily an early bird, but she could adapt to her needs of daily life whenever she had too.

Eugenia hopped excitedly up the first few steps until the Owlery. She was going to send her customary weekly letter to her sister. Being 4 years younger than her, she wanted to know everything about Hogwarts before she started her first year there. She sent letters back with questions, drawings, and occasionally food from mum, dad or other relatives.those letters were truly a surprise each and every time. And in her last letter, she mentioned a parcel of food. How eager she was for that to arrive!

Buried in thoughts, Eugenia finally reached the top, a white envelope in her hand. There, Eugenia saw one of her fellow Hufflepuffs, whom she recognised as Matilde tying something to one of the owl’s feet. Hello Matilde! She was about to tie her letter at the other side when she heard some sniffing. Eugenia turned around. A girl sat on the ground with an oversized hoodie. She was crying. Concerned something was very wrong, Eugenia lowered herself and looked at the girl. She tried to speak softly to her. Hey, are you felling alright? Can we help you? She wore a concerned smile. What had happened to this girl?

Two girls were suddenly standing in front of River, concerned words on their tongues. River hadn't even heard the door to the Owlery open at all. Hurriedly, she wiped at her tear-covered cheeks with the sleeves of her sweater. She stood and attempted to gather her shattered dignity, desperate to drag a cold, indifferent mask over her face. Her eyes were cold, like ice yet there was a burning pain hidden behind the frost.

Her vision was blurred from the remnants of her tears, she couldn't recognise the vague faces in front of her. The two girl's voices echoed alongside the sounds of crackling wood and too quiet silence. River felt as though a constant ringing rang throughout her mind, obscuring the strangers further.

She could just barely make out what they were saying, asking if she was alright. "I-I'm fine," her voice was shaky, belying the real truth of her state, "My apologies for bothering you. I'll take my leave now."

She attempted to take a step away from the other girls when her legs suddenly buckled beneath her. Weak from her previous hysteria, they no longer seemed to respond to her.

Her hearing cleared enough to have finally noticed the panicked cries of Nótt who tried desperately to get closer to her witch, who's shaking form probably highly concerned the protective feline.

Eugenia stood there, in the middle of the owlery. That unknown Slytherin girl looked up and brought her sleeve up to her face, drying her, as she saw, tears. And judging by the amount of tears, she had cried for a long time. Eugenia had cried like this before, but not on many occasions. One is the thread Honour the Fallen, Honour your Own And on those occasions, something truly serious had happened. Now, the Greek girl was even more scared.

The girl stood up for a minute. Her expression was a bit odd. It seemed like she was trying to seem cold, distant, but had failed quite miserably. Eugenia had been in such situations too, so she sensed that something had gone awfully bad. That something dreadful had happened. Why, after all, would you be crying in the Owlery, such a far away place from the dormitories, if it wasn’t a big deal? I-I’m fine. No, the girl wasn’t fine. You could see it.

My apologies for disturbing you. I will take my leave now. The girl tried to walk, but it seemed like her knees, and body, just didn’t want her to. She was shaking too. A black cat left on its feet, following the girl. Well, that must be her cat. Or so I reckon. Indeed, the black cat was slowly approaching her. Eugenia thought back. The last time she cried badly, her cat, Isolts, just walked up to her and snuggled near her feet, trying to show her affection. She came out of her thoughts. Looking at the girl once more, she insisted.

Hey, look I’m not disturbed. You are definitely feeling awful right now. What happened? Can we help you? I’m talking seriously. I really want to help you.

Are you alright? What a silly thing to say. From the looks of it, this girl was not okay. Matilde was about to try again when someone else entered the owlery. She recognized the girl, with curly hair and wire-rimmed glasses, as Eugenia, in her year. She didn't think she'd ever spoken to her fellow Hufflepuff before, but recognized her all the same. Matilde smiled at Eugenia's greeting.

Then she turned her attention back to the girl. She looked quickly at Eugenia, not quite sure what to do. Matilde noticed a black cat, presumably the girl's, crying, apparently trying to comfort her owner.

The girl started saying sorry, and looked like she was about to go, but then stopped. Matilde's eyes widened as the girl seemed to lose control a bit. Eugenia assured the girl that she wasn't disturbed, and Matilde nodded profusely in agreement.

"Don't apologize!" Matilde added. "We've all been there before. Is there anything we can do?" She didn't want to make the girl feel worse with too many questions when she was clearly already feeling overwhelmed. She stepped closer to the girl, offering her another smile. Sometimes maybe it was just best to be there for someone when they were upset. Maybe the girl didn't want their help, but Matilde felt that asking was the right thing to do.

A harsh voice echoed inside River's mind, a strange mixture of her voice and something else. Something harsh and gravelly. It was as if her most inner insecurities had taken form in a voice that berated her harshly, How can you be so contemptible? You, River Luxey? Daughter of the Nordic Settlers? Heiress of Vikings? A shame to your name is what you are.

River looked up at the girls unsurely. She wasn't sure what to do. She wasn't accustomed to revealing such a vulnerable side of herself to others. She felt weak, small and pathetic.

She tried again to stand, shakily succeeding before picking up Nótt to hold the feline securely in her arms. "I wouldn't want to bother you," she said in a quiet, broken voice, "You probably have more important things to do than have to deal with some random girl crying over a pet who has been dead for years."

River felt a stabbing pain in her heart for referring to Sylvie, who was so much more than a simple pet. But emotions, feelings and vulnerability are such easily exploited things, it was much better to try and bury them far down into the trenches of her mind. To drown them in ice and snow until not even River herself could reach them.
