What a Strange, Magical Place (Part Two)

Rowan glanced at Violeta, surprised. The other young slytherin had mentioned that she'd never been to any school before. Perhaps Violeta had been homeschooled, but Rowan's curiosity won over and she spoke the question aloud. "So you've been homeschooled?" The girl asked, brushing a strand of brunette hair out of her face. Rowan rummaged through her pockets and pulled out a band to tie her hair into a messy bun, out of her face. As Violeta explained the risks of being expelled, Rowan bit her tongue anxiously. She hadn't thought of that, and she certainly wouldn't want to be expelled from Hogwarts, ever. The wizarding school was already feeling like a home away from home, and Rowan felt more comfortable around her peers here than she ever had around those back in Birmingham. So, for now, the young vipress decided that she would do her best to stay within the lines of the rules.
Rowan jumped onto the staircase just as it began moving, and Violeta followed close behind. Rowan laughed in amazement as she looked up at the labyrinth of staircases, constantly changing. She found delight in the fact that one climbing the stairs may not know where the path leads. Thus was the position that she and her acquaintance were in, but Rowan felt no uncertainty as the two reached the top stair and waited for it to connect with one of the ledges leading into an unfamiliar passageway. This particular passage, on the first floor, was lit dimly with lanterns similar to those in the Small Hall and was eerily quiet. Entranced by the prospect of adventure, Rowan began to walk down the passageway, not checking behind her to see if her fellow first-year Slytherin was following (though shuffling footsteps echoing through the hall told her that she was), running her hand along the smooth stone wall. Every once in a while, the two would pass a framed portrait. The third portrait they passed shouted suddenly- "what are you two prats doing 'round here?"- making Rowan jump backwards, running into Violet. She met Violet's gaze and then burst out laughing.

Rowan covered her mouth as she noticed Violet glancing around, probably making sure nobody else was around. She then grinned at the fellow first year and began to run down the corridor. "Come on then!" She called. Violet followed and soon the two were racing through the corridors, spinning around corners and peering out of various random windows. Rowan crept towards a suit of armor and poked it on the helmet before running quickly to hide back behind the wall, stifling her giggles. At some point, Rowan pointed out a spider in Violet's hair, and about an hour passed before they had found their way back to the grand staircase. Rowan leaned against the railing of one and was breathing heavily as Violeta caught up. "This place-" Rowan said between breaths. "Is gigantic." The castle was indeed much larger than Rowan had suspected it to be, as the girls' late night adventure hadn't taken them even a quarter of the school's land. The staircase which they stood on jerked slightly as it began to move, and Rowan slid down the railing, landing clumsily on the ground of another staircase. She went on like this for a while until (somehow) they had found their way back onto the ground floor. Rowan crept through the corridors, Violet close behind, as they made their way towards the staircase leading down into the dungeons. It was certainly dark outside, and Rowan was clueless as to what time it was. Were they up past curfew? She couldn't tell, but best to get back to the common room before anyone noticed they were gone.
Finally, the girls had made their way back into the Slytherin common room. Rowan laughed in relief and flung herself down onto one of the sofas. The common room was relativelty uncrowded, and this particular couch was empty. "That was amazing," Rowan acknowledged with a grin. She couldn't stop smiling. It made her face hurt. "It was great to meet you, Violet," the young vipress added with a yawn. "I hope we can go exploring again some other time." And with that, Rowan Sallow sleepily climbed the stairs towards her dormitory as the moonlight eerily shone through the water of the lake into the space.
