Two snakes were out in the grass. The human kind, of course, both coming from the green and silver. It was a gorgeous day in the grand outdoors, and a Saturday, meaning the girls could lounge or frolick or participate in whatever activity struck their fancy without the looming threat of deadlines and homework and classes. Wonderful, innit?

Astra and Mahlioz had been out here a while, it seemed, but it was just so nice! Astra couldn't bring herself to go inside just yet, not when she'd just eaten and had no reason to go back to her underground living space for at least an hour.

She was loathe to bring herself inside, but doubly loathe to bring her cat in. Hermes, still as full of energy as ever, was passing the time pouncing on various insects and small rodents in the long grasses.

Astra pushed her hair out of her face and stuffed her hands in her coat pockets. It was getting rather chilly, despite the humidity, and an added wind chill made nothing better. Her woolen overcoat and house scarf kept her top half nice and snug, but her denim-clad legs felt the biting chill acutely.

She looked toward Mahlioz, smiling. "How have you been? Did you have a nice break?" she asked, her soft voice floating across the breeze. The first and second year hadn't had a chance to truly catch up, not with the ball immediately after break and all the chaos surrounding.

Thoughts
The weather was really fantastic today, and Mahlioz couldn't have been happier to be enjoying it with Astra, sharer of her braincell. Away from everything else. Ignoring their duties, which spanned from homework to duelling practice to actually adressing the stupid flighty thoughts in their mind that they didn't understand. No, all that could be done later, when it was rainy and freezing. It was too beautiful a day to ruin with those sorts of things.

"I've been pretty good, thanks!" She... wasn't sure that was not a lie, though she wasn't sure if it was either. If she didn't know, it couldn't count, right? "Oh, yeah, it was alright. Did I... did I tell you I was moving?" Ah, shoot. Already heavy topics. How to lighten it now? "So I got to take advantage of my house a little more than usual. It was fun, I got a bunch of chocolate for Easter, I think my parents were using it as a way to apologize." They were lingering on the topic too much. Mahlioz had never been great at leading a conversation.

Unfortunately, it needed to be done, because the subject desperately needed changing. She glanced around for a good distraction, and found one without too much difficulty, as it was jumping and bounding around in the grass. "I seriously can't believe I hadn't known about Hermes before! He's. So. Cute. I'll have to introduce you two to Eusèbe at one point." She hesitated. "Well. Unless Hermes eats bunnies. I don't know much about cats." Ironic, for a kid with a (magi)zoologist as a mother.

Pushing their green frog hat on a little more to battle the cool breeze that had just passed by, they added, "What about you? How is everything? What have you been up to? Apart from keeping your extraordinarily adorable cat a secret from me." They faked indignation before letting it drop with a laugh.

"Oh? Like... how far?" Astra asked on the topic of moving. She knew some people moved away and never came back. She hoped Mahl wasn't moving out of the United Kingdom, it would be awful to lose her friend so soon in their journey.

"Chocolate's a pretty good apology." A pause. Hermes leapt over, then away, zigzagging all across the clearing. "You know, if you are moving super far, I'm sure I could convince my parents to let you stay with us if you wanted to. Like around school." Roderick would probably be less than happy at having both halves of the Mahl-Astra brain in the house, but he would get over it.

Hermes zoomed over at the mention of his name and twined himself all around Mahlioz's ankles, purring and looking over at Astra as if to say Why would you keep this human from me? She is wonderful and loves me so much.

Astra shrugged, giggling at Mahl's enthusiasm. "I dunno. I guess the cards haven't been quite right for you two to properly meet. He really, really likes you though." Hermes could sense good people, Astra was certain. And even though she already knew for a 100% true fact Mahl was good people, it was kind of nice to see Hermes confirm that. "Bunny? You have a rabbit?" Her face lit up. "I cannot wait to meet Eusèbe. Oh, uh, I don't think he eats rabbits. Might be a rough playmate... but I can always hold him or something!" Hermes was preferential to birds over mice in his "hunting," so Astra hoped that was sort of foreshadowing that he was chill with rabbits.

"Everything's been pretty good! I mean, nothing in particular. Just trying to dissect the universe, per usual." She cracked a smile at her own joke. The notion was common to each Slytherin, as evidencing by their first meeting. In truth, there was a little more going on, such as dealing with the aftermath of the Ball, Accusation, and subsequent processes, but with the dust settling (for now), that was able to be kept in the back of the mind, near the Vault, preparing to be put in.

"Uh... France," Mahlioz winced, before quickly adding, "But I'll get to keep going here! I'm staying with a family friend during the school year." Which didn't make it any easier. Well, maybe a little bit easier - Mahlioz did not want to lose this place and these people that she loved so much. But they'd been living in that house for thirteen and a bit years.

The proposal to have Mahlioz stay at Astra's was tempting as heck. "That would be awesome, but I think my parents have already decided." They seemed keen on ruining her life by moving - why would they try to make it any better for her? At least that's how it felt like. But she would ask, that was for sure. "Thank you though. Seriously, I appreciate it."

"Well I really, really like him back," they replied as Hermes began brushing up against her ankles. From the way Astra's eyes lit up at the mention of Eusèbe - it was crazy neither of them had known either of them had pets - it seemed she was going to like him just as much as Mahlioz did Hermes. "Yeah! He's named after a character in a comic book series I love." Astra's cat seemed way too kind and adorable to try and eat Eusèbio. "Eh, I'm sure he'll be fine. He was chased by a ferret once - he'll manage a little rough playing." He was kind of terrified of the two ferrets who lived in their dorm now - hopefully he'd be fine with cats.

"Ah yes, of course. Met any alternate universe us-es recently?" She grinned. Actually, now that they thought about it, a few too many questions were beginning to rise in their mind - were the other Mahliozes moving, too? Were they also having gender crises? But she pushed away the questions for now. They were for another time. Right now, she wanted to relax with her friend. "It's so nice outside today." It almost felt like nothing could go wrong.

But of course, it was Hogwarts. Something could always go wrong.

France. Her stomach dropped and for a whole two seconds.

Keep going here. A relieved laugh escaped Astra against her will, and she put a hand to her chest. "Oh thank God," she giggled, the emotion she couldn't quite name ebbing away. "It's so selfish but I would probably cease to exist properly if you weren't around." Mahlioz wasn't a constant presence in Astra's life, but she sure was a light in the dark dungeon at many times. Astra cherished their moments spent together, whether filled with words or not at all. Times like these.

A soft and warm realization: Mahl was a friend close like a sister. Someone like Renelle. Though that was a different can of worms and an unfortunate commentary on Astra's judgement, so she'd rather skip over that bit. A true friend in the midst of all the smoke and mirrors of house Slytherin.

"Well if you ever need to run away-" She raised her eyebrows, looking to Mahl meaningfully yet clearly joking (she hoped, at least), "-oooor just hang out I guess, there's a house in London whose door will be open to you always."

Hermes leaned into the love then bounded away again in his trademark hyperactive fashion. Astra watched as he ran like a grey blur to a hastily fleeing bird. It was at this moment the fatal mistake was made: she forgot to watch for him, turning both eyes on Mahloiz.

"Oh? What comic?" It must be fantastic. A) Mahl liked it, B) Esuébio is too awesome of a name to be in a lame comic. "Oh my. He must be a very brave bunny. Ferrets are wild." Astra had not met enough ferrets to make such a statement as confidently as she did, but the ferret Gage Jepson brought to school for show and tell and subsequently set loose when he forgot to latch the cage back in Year 3 seemed like enough to base her assumptions on.

With a click of her tongue, she turned her attention back to where she had last seen her cat. "Unfortunately, my inter-dimensional methods of communication seem to be getting held up at Gate 1. I've heard the quantum police is rather strict about all that. But I hope they're having a wonderful day, just like us." Astra wondered what her other situations were like. In how many universes had she been thrown into water over her head and forced to keep herself afloat as strange boys with teddy bears tried to drag her down? In how many timelines had she sabes @Finnegan Connor? In how many paths had she chosen the smart choice, the Flipendo or really any other spell that could have worked any better way than her stupid, stupid, ill-thought tackle-

Hey, reel it in. Let the Vault do it's job, won't you?

She squinted. Where was that cat? She nodded absentmindedly, murmuring a mhm, because while the weather really was so nice Hermes was being not so nice and being hard to find.

And her searching eyes were met with nothing. Astra's jaw clenched slightly and concerned lines formed in her brow. "Gods, where is he?" she muttered. She looked to Mahl quickly. "Hey, do you see Hermes anywhere? He's like, disappeared. I can usually spot him wherever but I can't see him right now."

Sorry for such a late response, I didn't mean to let this sit in my drafts for so long 😭

Thoughts
The look of shock on Astra's face followed by a relieved laugh and a "thank god" was enough to make Mahlioz's heart melt. She wasn't exactly sure why she was all that surprised - the two were friends, weren't they? As evidenced by the fact that they were hanging out together, that was how friends worked. It was just that after too long without seeing each other, Mahlioz always had a sort of irrational fear that their friends didn't care about them as much anymore.

Obviously that was not the case. "Ceasing to exist properly" was certainly a way to prove that, and Mahlioz couldn't help but smile bashfully. "Pffft, thank you." The sentiment was most definitely reciprocated. In fact, it was so much so that at Astra's joking proposal of running away, Mahlioz almost considered it. Yes, they were themselves, and yes, that meant they were terrified at even the prospect of breaking a rule, but this felt almost worth it. Almost. "Thank you."
Perhaps she would take her up on that, another time. It occurred to her that she really did not know as much about Astra as she would have liked - did she have siblings? Had she known about magic before Hogwarts? And if seeing her friend's house came with the answers to those questions, that couldn't hurt.

"It's called De Cape et de Crocs, it's French!" They knew for a fact it could be found at Hogwarts' library (then again, what couldn't?) because they had began reading it in first year before getting interrupted by a certain older Slytherin. It was amusing remembering that now. It felt like a whole lot more than a year and a half had passed. "Ah yes, the bravest. He was named after a bunny with a sword, after all. It's... a heck of a comic." She grinned.

Mahlioz might have been unofurtunate enough not to know all that much about Astra, but they could tell something was up after the quantum police talk. A wonderful day, just like us. Was that true? Mahlioz was dreading the summer holidays, and though they were getting rather good at ignoring their problems and pretending it really was a wonderful day, the problems were still there. Was Astra doing the same thing? The girl seemed deep in thought after their playful conversation about alternate universes, and it didn't seem like it was purely about other dimensions.

Mahlioz was hesitant to ask. There was, of course, the good chance she'd completely misunderstood and that Astra was just fine. But two years had taught the Slytherin enough about this school being full of awful things that she often didn't know about. It was just... they were having such a good day. What if she made Astra mad by asking? They themselves would not have wanted her to ask them if the roles were switched.

But this was her friend. So she opened her mouth to begin formulating a question - except Astra got to speaking first. "Hermes?" Right, the cat. Mahlioz looked around. "Uh. Yeah, no, me neither." Uh oh. "He was chasing a bird earlier, I think? Going that way." They pointed to the last place they had seen the creature bouding around, slightly further from the castle than the two Slytherins. Slightly closer to the forest at the edge of the grounds.

Getting up and dusting themselves off, Mahlioz continued to look around. "Hermes!" Obviously, no response, as Hermes was a cat. Right. Well, he was at Hogwarts and named after the god of messengers, so there was no harm in hoping he could speak. "He can't have gone too far. You want to look for him?" She had no idea how cats worked, maybe they came home on their own. But it was getting close to curfew, now that they thought about it.
