The time is 12 pm. The location is Hogwarts, specifically the Charms classroom. And our main character is, well, Eugenia. That was what she thought when entering the classroom on that hot spring day. Today was a joint class with the Ravenclaws and she was eager to learn some new spells and make some new friends too. Oh she was so excited!

Eugenia was from the very first to enter the classroom. The professor told the first group of people, who happened to be Hufflepuffs, to wait for the others to come. The were let of early from Flying and they had arrived here sooner. They gathered around some of the tables. There were locks on them. Judging by the fact that they were going to learn Alohomora and Colloportus, it did not seem all that strange.

When the rest of the kids entered, Eugenia sat at one of the tables and watched as a Hufflepuff came towards the desk and sat next to her. Trying to focus with the lesson, she looked up and tried to write notes for the two spells. She made her notes with her quill and even answered a question. Eugenia tried to pay little to no attention to the person next to her. It was not the time to get distracted and who knows if this spell could be in the end-of-year exams.

Soon enough, the theory part had finished. It was time to start casting the spells. Eugenia, who was paying attention, now wished she could talk to the person next to her. They had something like 15 minutes to do the spell. That meant so much time for either socialising, or boredom. So, she cast Colloportus and turned to the student next to her. Hi there! Um- my name is Eugenia. What is yours?

The Charms classroom was a lot more different and interesting than the other classes except flying. It had new surprises for its students each day. Levitating sweets, cute wooden skeletons... this time, the locked chests were in the centre of the room.
Ash entered the classroom with a few other Huffltpuffs and Ravenclaws and like the other days, instead of finding a table first, she looked for what surprise they had today.

Looking at the chests, she wondered what was inside them. Sure thing that Professor Fresnel wouldn't leave them empty. And that was why Ash loved Charms more than most of the subjects.

When she was done staring at the chests, she finally moved her gaze towards the seats, just to realise almost all of the seats were taken.

Oh, you blockhead... She told herself while looking for a seat. Thankfully, there was a table among the many tables which had a Hufflepuff girl sitting alone there. So it still wasn't too late. Ash hurried towards the table before a Ravenclaw could take it. Looking innocently at the student, she sat beside the Hufflepuff girl who didn't seem to mind her sitting with her.

Ash was sure not to miss a single word that the Professor said. She made her notes untidily but fast. Soon came the interesting part of the lesson, practising the spells they just learnt— Alohomora and Colloportus. They were supposed to take turns to cast the spell on the chests. And now, it was the girl's turn who she sat with. Ash smiled as the girl brilliantly cast Colloportus at the chest. It somewhat seemed like she'd already mastered the spell.

Ash wondered whether she could start a conversation with the girl, recalling her mother's advice out of nowhere— "You might come off as rude if you don't engage with others."

And then a voice distracted from her thoughts which were slowly turning gloomy for some reason. She smiled at the girl next to her who just introduced herself as Eugenia.

"Hey!! I'm Ash. Ash Brown.," and she extended her hand to shake it with the girl's like she did every time she met someone new. "You were really good at the spell!"

Eugenia wasn’t very sure she truly knew how to properly interact with other kids. Here at Hogwarts, this problem was minimised. Mostly. The girl she was talking too soon turned around and spoke. Hey there! I’m Ash. Ash Brown. You were really good at that spell! So her name was Ash. I remember someone calling some Ash, or was it Hash yesterday at the common room? Is she her? Mental note to self: Ask the girl about this. Well, Eugenia was good at making mental notes.

Ash now extended her hand for a handshake. Eugenia was a bit surprised, as she honestly thought it was an odd place for one, but extended her own too. The girls quietly shook hands, while Eugenia did a small bow with her head; for she was sitting on a chair. She spoke to Ash. Nice to meet you Ash. Do you like Charms class? What other conversation starter could she think of right now? None! Well, it wasn’t the worse one she could have used. Eugenia now took her moment and cast Alohomora to the chest, which opened with a creak. She smiled. She had been perfectly successful on both spells, first try. All that study did pay off. Now, Ash could cast whenever she wished.

Can I ask a question? Yesterday, in the Hufflepuff common room, I heard someone shouting your name, Ash, and then calling that said person “Hash Brown”. Was that you? I don’t now any other Ashes, or anyone who is possibly nicknamed “Hash” to ask. She giggled. The whole situation was a bit funny, in her opinion. Eugenia sometimes wanted to talk about interesting stuff in class. That was the most interesting thing that had happened that week. On the other hand, it was only a Tuesday… She had to mention it though, didn’t she? How could she forget such an important mental note?

As Ash offered her hand for a shake, Eugenia looked surprised for some reason. But anyway, she shook hands.
"Nice to meet you too, Eugenia! Yep, Charms is my favourite... well, after flying. What about you? What subject do you like the most?" She added.

This was the first time she was talking to Eugenia. They had come across each other a lot before, because, of course, they both were Hufflepuffs so it was self-explanatory— but they'd never really talked before— or that's what Ash could remember. And now that they were talking, Ash found out she's someone really cool, and perhaps sociable too.

It was now Eugenia's turn to cast Alohomora over the chest. She did it perfectly on the first try and Ash couldn't help but stare. Grinning, she showed Eugenia a thumbs up. "Cheers, that was awesome!"

It was now her turn to cast the spell. She chose a chest and cast Colloportus. It didn't work properly, to her disappointment. Well, wand movements were deadly dead easy, only that she always struggled with pronunciations. However, she made it in the end after trying for the fourth time.

I'll work on it more when I'm back in the dorm... She thought sadly. She didn't have to worry if she looked sad outside— she was quite good at hiding her emotions.

Thanks to Eugenia who spoke at that moment.
"Can I ask a question? Yesterday, in the Hufflepuff common room, I heard someone shouting your name, Ash, and then calling that said person “Hash Brown”. Was that you? I don’t know any other Ashes, or anyone who is possibly nicknamed “Hash” to ask."

Ash laughed along at the question.
"Right, that was me— my friends like calling me Hash Brown." And it might sound weird, but she liked that too- being called anything that was not her name. Yes, that was her. "I dunno... you can call me that too if you want. Oh, speaking of which, d'you want to be friends?"

Hoping she hadn't messed things up like she always did, she looked curiously at Eugenia.

So… It turns out, Ash likes Flying class a lot. And Charms is her second favourite. Well, aren’t they the only classes with at least some variation and excitement at all? Honestly, they are. How about her? Eugenia didn’t really know what to answer. Hmmm. Good question. I like all the classes, maybe Astronomy, Herbology, Charms and DADA a bit more. They teach us some good material in all of the classes, but sometimes they just don’t teach really well. And she smirked.

Eugenia watched as Ash tried to cast Colloportus. She had some difficulties with the pronunciation. It took her peer 4 tries to get the spell right. Eugenia thought it was best to encourage her. That was great. Here’s a tip. First say each syllable separately, and then slowly say them quicker. I practice before class in my dorm room, to get the spells right, and that it what I do when struggling. Also, some of these words are not of Latin origin, so it’s weird for many people when trying to stress the correct syllable. Eugenia looked down at her feet. She remembered how much she had practiced the previous day in her dorm. The truth was, it paid off. But she did go to dinner feeling exceptionally hungry and tired…

The girl them tried to explain what happened in the common room. So she is the mysterious Hash. Hmm. Should have expected it. I did see a black haired girl that looked a bit like her responding. But still, fun thing. Maybe I should call her that. Then, something that Eugenia didn’t even remotely expect happened. Ash asked if she wanted to become friends. She looked at her with excitement. Oh my god! Yes! Of course Hash! I don’t have many friends outside Hogwarts, so I love making new ones. Eugenia smiled at the girl with gratitude. Maybe this was going to be a great friendship.

As Eugenia spoke about classes, Ash saw her smirk, to which she just grinned, making her look stupider than she was.
She just found out Eugenia was more into subjects like Herbology, Astronomy, Charms and DADA— interesting...

Sure it was really dumb of Ash to get the spell wrong three times— but she finally got it during the fourth try... Well, Eugenia was too kind to her to help her.
"Ah..." she replied with yet another grin. She couldn't believe herself; she showed no emotions when she didn't know the person around her, and then, the next moment when they initiated a conversation, she was smiling and being all weird. "Thanks so much, Eugenia! I'll practice a lot."

Asking the kind Hufflepuff if she wanted to be friends, Ash felt really nervous. She could feel herself cracking her fingers— something nervousness always made her do. Well, she could bet at least one person existed who did crazy or annoying stuff out of nervousness...
But to her surprise—
"Oh my god! Yes! Of course Hash! I don’t have many friends outside Hogwarts, so I love making new ones."

Ash smiled.
"I get you there. You know, I never had a SINGLE friend outside Hogwarts!" She said truthfully and didn't regret it... she wasn't the wrong one, was she?

It was now her turn to cast Alohomora on the chest.
Again, her wand movement was absolutely correct, but she got the pronunciation correct during her third try— better than she did in Colloportus, anyway...

"Hah," she sighed. "So we're done with our spells! Cheers!" She offered Eugenia the Every-Flavour Beans she brought there by mistake, thinking they had their History class before (and luckily, earwax-flavoured beans always keep her from drifting off during the History class...), safe from the eyes of Professor Fresnel. "Want this?"

As Eugenia spoke, she saw Ash grinning, smiling. She seemed like a genuinely happy person, embodying the Hufflepuff spirit. Eugenia smiled back. She heard her thank for the advice, saying that she will practice later. Eugenia really wanted to protest; she never meant it that way. You feel more productive when you practice before class, rather than after the end of a lesson. That was Eugenia’s study theory. Find time to do both homework and fun, no need for extra practice. She was just the little Greek perfectionist she always was, wanting to be familiar with th material she is taught.

Eugenia kindly smiled again, after telling Ash that her friendship request was accepted. And wow she wasn’t really the only one who didn’t have any friends outside school. Hah, I know. And your parents will always tell you Talk to that kid over there, he/she seems nice. This is the first time I actually make friends. Wow, Hogwarts is a magical place by all means. She looked a bit absent-mindedly at her notes, her hand moving subconsciously up to her ear, touching her pearl earring from which hung a string, the earring’s second part with a white butterfly and a green rock.

Soon enough, Hash (Eugenia would at all costs use the nickname, it was too precious) tried to unlock the chest. She did a bit better than last time, it took her just three tries to get the pronunciation correctly. Good for her. On the third try, the chest opened, two pastries being inside. Well, will you look at that. I’m saving mine for later, I will eat it as we move to the greenhouses for Herbology in around- Eugenia checked her little watch. ten minutes. We did our spells fast, so we have all this time to talk. Hash presented the Greek girl with a box of every flavour beans. Secretly, Eugenia popped one in her mouth.

Mmm. Lemon flavour. It actually tastes nice. Memories from Greece and home swarmed her head. Her mom always put a lot of lemon in her food (It was a Vitamin C party in there). Subsequently, Eugenia developed a liking for tangy food. Somehow, she found herself singing quietly to a Greek rhyme. It was a voice level only Ash could hear.

Smiling all that time, Ash listened to Eugenia speaking about not having friends outside Hogwarts and looked at her moving her hands unknowingly, touching her earring, etc. She could completely relate to her fellow Hufflepuff who was now her friend— except that she couldn't remember her parents caring about her not having friends. Back in the muggle world, they never even had time to hug her goodbye whenever she left for Hogwarts...
"Indeed," Ash grinned, covering up for the sad smile. "Really magical... in all aspects. Well, you know, the only person who truly loves me outside Hogwarts is my elder brother." She said. The mention of her brother always made her happy in no time.

The chest Ash cast Alohomora on opened, revealing two pastries. Sweets and sweets. She had gotten a lot of sweets since this morning. Luck was with her today.
"I guess I'll save it for later as well!" Se replied to Eugenia and looked down at the pastries again. "Or—uhm— maybe I'll save one of them for later." Ash winked at her and ate one of them. Sweets really got her hungry.

Ash saw Eugenia accepting her Every-Flavour Beans and popped one of them into her mouth with her.
Eugenia got the lemon flavour— a nice one. Lemon-flavoured beans were her 5th favourite.
Ash puckered her face as the spicy pepper-flavoured beans spread on her tongue but was good enough not to make any noise. Blinking rapidly through her teary-eyed smile, she carefully listened to Eugenia sing slowly. Knowing only English and a little bit of Spanish she learned in her muggle school, Ash couldn't understand what Eugenia was singing, but it sure sounded beautiful.
"What language is that? And what does it mean?" She asked curiously and started munching on her second pastry, unable to handle the pepper's spiciness.

It was so nice having Ash for a friend. They shared a lot of beliefs, or so it seemed. She too saw and had realised how magical this place was. Eugenia heard Ash carefully. Well, you know, the only person who loves me outside of Hogwarts is my Brother. Wow. So Ash had a sibling too? How nice! They were, well, a bit similar after all. Hmm. You know, I also have a sibling. I have a little sister. She is so cute. I wish we could meet each other’s siblings! She smiled after mentioning her sister. It was so nice remembering Ifigenia. She really missed her.

Eugenia watched as Ash too picked up the little sweet from the chest. Not able to resist the temptation, Hash placed it in her mouth. Eugenia bit her lip as she tried to resist her own intrusive thoughts. She had to save the desert for later. She could resist it. A late night snack would be very much worth it. She would really need it if she chose to stick with her plans of studying until really late. Additionally, she was so much more in the mood for an Every-Flavour Bean.

So, she stood there until she managed to finish her bean, waiting for Hash to eat the sweet, and maybe her own bean. Excited, she tried to think what flavour that dark brown- no, blackish bean could be. Burnt toast? Dark Chocolate? Alas, it was probably not good. Ash made an odd grimace, telling Eugenia it wasn’t a really tasty one after all. So what could it be? Pepper? Those are awfully bad sometimes. At least Eugenia inherited the spice tolerance of her mother, meaning that she could eat a chilli pepper and fell mildly infuriated. Maybe Ash really didn’t like the spice, she shoved another little pastry into her mouth.

Well, Eugenia was quite flabbergasted. With a chuckle, the Greek girl had to ask Hash. Wait, where did you find that one? Are you carrying a whole bakery in your bag or something? Then, she only saw fit to answer Hash's question. Oh. This language is Greek, my mother tongue. I was born in Greece and came here when I was 4. I still speak Greek every day, I never forgot it. That is why my surname is “Karageorgiadi”. In a dialect, it means that I am, basically, the descendant of some Black George. Yea. Odd stuff. The song was a little children’s rhyme about how I went to some lady who gave me a nice smelling lemon. Not much. She laughed and stole another bean from Ash. Plopping it into her mouth, she tasted broccoli. Not that bad, but also not awesome. This class was even more fun now.

Ash was careful not to miss a word spoken by Eugenia. She grinned as she learned her new amazing friend had a sibling too.
"Oh, a little sister?" she said. "That's great!"
The idea of meeting each other's siblings seemed nice to Ash, and she gave a funny nod.
"Oh yeah, we should definitely meet each other's siblings someday!! Alex loves meeting new people, anyway."

The pepper-flavoured wasn't intolerable, but it wasn't something Ash could tolerate either. Unlike her family members who normally preferred everything spicy, she hated spice ever since she was a baby. The other chocolate pastry was a lifesaver...
Ash was enjoying the sweet when Eugenia spoke again, grabbing her attention.
Wait, where did you find that one? Are you carrying a whole bakery in your bag or something?
"Oh, well," Ash laughed nervously, scratching her forehead as her friend chuckled at her. "I carry sweets almost everywhere— they help me during the bad days... you want something sweet, by the way? I've got more..." she asked stupidly.

Eugena told her that the song she sang was in Greek, that she was Greek and that it was her mother tongue, and Ash listened with interest— she was never so good at speaking, even awful at it sometimes, but she loved listening to people.
She found the meaning behind Eugenia's surname quite interesting and grinned at her when she, laughing, extended her hand for another bean.

"I see, that makes sense," Ash replied, "So you were smaller when you came here. Well, I'm just British— a Mancunian. I speak English but I know a little bit of Spanish too/" And she popped another bean into her mouth and frowned for a second.

Anyway, it was not a bummer like the pepper bean.
"Earwax-flavoured beans were supposed only for the History class," Ash laughed.

They still had a little time left before the next class would start, and Ash wished she could talk more with Eugenia.
