Battle of the Seasons
July 24th, 2024πhe changing of seasons has long been a thing of magic and mythos. The passage of time is a violent, uncompassionate mistress, despite her necessity, with the cycles of life and death in permanent rotation, neither ever managing to overtake the other in their antediluvian race. Today, however, they would finally face each other head-on on the battlefield, even if it was only for one climactic (and climatic) afternoon.
On one side of the arena, the same glacial landscape that had dominated the camp thus far has been magnified exponentially, with frigid, icy winds, large drifts of snow, and a few cheery snowmen (who were dressed remarkably similar to some of the more popular professors, though you'd never be able to prove it) gave life to an otherwise barren landscape. Warming charms had been provided for the denizens of Team Winter, as well as cheerfully vibrant hats, earmuffs, and mittens available at the entrance, if you preferred to make a more fashionable statement. If you were unlucky enough to have never made a snowball before, a charmingly lopsided handmade sign by the door laid out some step-by-step instructions to help turn you into Team Winter's perfect cannon fodder.
On the other side of the arena was what likely qualified as a sight for sore eyes for anyone who'd come to Summer Camp actually expecting a Summer Camp. Warm sand and rolling waves called out to passersby like a sirensong, luring the children of Team Summer to the most nefarious trap of them all: adorable little sandcastle kingdoms, populated entirely by tiny little crabs. Mimicking the snow mounds of Team Winter, a dozen or so sand dunes were spread out around this side of the arena, providing a convenient place for cover for the main event. Sunglasses, sunhats, and sunscreen (that's a lot of sun!) were available to pick up by the entrance, and buckets of water balloons waited patiently for their wielders in various spots around the summer half of the arena.
The two seasons met haphazardly in a middle, a sharp, inelegant clash between two extremes. There was no gentle transition to be seen here, and a player could easily stand in the center in the arena and have half their body in each season. (The organizers cannot, in good conscience, recommend this. Imagine the tan lines!)
The two moderators of the event, @Sage Willows and @Rebecca Lark, would be seen standing by the entrance until the last of the players had made their way into the arena. Once everyone was in position, each of them would make their way to their respective team's territory (Sage to Winter, and Rebecca to summer) and take their marks, calling their teams to order. Together, they would count down from three before simultaneously blowing their whistles, signaling the fight to begin.

3. All actions must be owled to your respective team's moderator (@Sage Willows for Team Winter and @Rebecca Lark for Team Summer) by the deadline. Your action should be stated clearly, such as "throwing a water balloon from behind a sand dune". Actions may be submitted individually, in small groups, or as a whole team. Please refer to the "Game Mechanics" reducio below for available actions.
4. All stats and abilities MUST be listed in every single post. For iNPC players, a link to your iNPC's ency must also be included.
5. The game operates similar to dodgeball: if you are hit with a snowball or water balloon (i.e., you fail your accuracy vs. evasion roll) you are out of the game, and the goal of the game is to eliminate the opposing team and be the last team standing. A spectator thread will be posted, and players that have been knocked out of the game are welcome to join the spectators for the remainder of the event.
6. Working together as a team and strategizing is encouraged but in no way required. Collaborating with your team is NOT cheating.
7. At any time during your post, you may take a "free action" to duck behind a dune and in character strategize and relay information to your team. Unless you are taking the Throw Projectile action, however, you MUST step out from behind the dune by the conclusion of your post.
8. Any player who misses 2 posts will be considered out of the game. In character, your character suffers "heat/cold sickness" and is sent to the nurse.For any and all questions, please owl @Rebecca Lark.Game Mechanics:
Reducio1. Throw projectile (water balloons/snowballs): basic accuracy vs. evasion. If accuracy roll is higher than opponents evasion roll, and no counter-action was taken, the projectile hits, and the opponent is out of the game.
- Bonus action - Trench Warfare: When a player is performing the Throw Projectile action, they may opt to duck down behind a sand dune or snow dune, depending on their team, and take their action from there. Throwing a projectile from behind a dune results in a -3 to accuracy, but a plus +4 to evasion.
ReducioOn an accuracy critical failure, t!choose will be used to select one of the following outcomes: a) you manage to hit yourself, and are out of the game; b) you manage to hit one of the referees, and are out of the game (and we're probably mad at you ic); c) you accidently target a random teammate, and an accuracy vs. evasion roll against them will be performed. If another crit fail is rolled for accuracy in this check, it will be disregarded, and no new target will be assigned.
On an evasion critical failure, a random team member will be knocked into, and a contested strength roll will be performed. If the team member fails the strength roll, they will be knocked prone, and suffer a -5 to evasion in the following round. They may get up as a free action.
2. Catch: If a player believes that they will be targeted, they can opt to try and catch the projectile thrown at them, giving them a +5 to evasion. The roll will still be accuracy vs evasion. If the catching party's evasion is higher than the throwing party's accuracy, then the projectile is caught. The catching party will them throw the caught projectile at a target, rolling with disadvantage. If a priority target is not specified in the player's submitted action, a random enemy target will be selected.
3. Fastball: Player makes a DC 15 strength roll. If successful, they gain a +5 to accuracy. If unsuccessful, the player suffers a -2 to accuracy. After the outcome of the strength check, the "throwing projectile" accuracy vs. evasion roll will be performed with the appropriate modifiers. Players performing the fastball action will always suffer a -2 to evasion, unless they roll a critical success.
4. Cast spell (FOUL): Standard duelling rules apply to all spells, and only spells from the duelling playbook may be used. If you are caught casting a spell, this is considered a foul, and you are automatically ejected from the game. In addition to the standard duelling rules required by each individual spell, a DC 15 wisdom roll must be passed in order to avoid being caught. Foulplay may be used. Any spell that lasts for more than one round (such as Metelojinx) will require an additional wisdom roll each round. The wisdom DC will increase +2 each round. **Only non-damaging spells are permitted in Battle of the Seasons. If you submit a damaging spell as your action, we will ask you to change it. Otherwise, your action is null and void.**
5. Bodyblock: A player may choose to step in and sacrifice themself for another player that they suspect will be targeted. The player will make a DC 12 strength roll to see if they can successfully push the player they are defending out of the line of fire. If successful, they automatically become the target of the attack, and will roll evasion at -2 AND disadvantage.

Oonagh stood upon the beach setting and sighed. Now that is something she would consider a worthy moment of a summer camp. She wriggled her toes and watched sand move around. She was wearing swim wear with bright yellow shorts and a pinkish top part. Her hair had been wrangled into an incredibly messy bun, wearing on the hair tie in a way that threatened one wrong movement causing it to explode right back into its unruly state. But she was ready, ready for chaos, ready for destruction. Was throwing sand into someone's face out of the question?
She grabbed some of the water balloons and began to scurry behind one of the sand castle mounds. She needed some cover for what she was about to do next, to escape the gaze of whoever was referee here. She then began to quickly untie the handful of balloons she had grabbed from a bucket and let out the water, which proofed to be easier than first expected... faster too. Now what did prove difficult was getting some sand into these balloons. Once she had enough sand in one of them, she quickly blew it up with air so it would burst upon impact and tied it back up.

βMarvelous, simply marvelous!β Lemmy exclaimed to himself as he looked around with eyes full of wonder. The pitch was a display of some of the finest magic he had ever laid his eyes on. The way the grounds were split between a winter wonderland and a beachy paradise left him momentarily stunned, but the thrill of competition was on the air and this little goblin was ready for war. With a shout of excitement his little legs would scurry over to the moderators and fate would once again have him back in the sand. βLetβs go!!β He called out to the others gathering around.
Lemmy did good to remember his motherβs teachings and made sure to grab a large sun hat and slathered plenty of sunblock onto his face. That fair goblin skin of his needed all the protection he could get. The garb went well with the pink linen shirt and beige linen pants he had worn that day. It was fair to say he looked the part for team summer! As the teams finished assembling Lemmy made his final preparations! After a quick stretch he armed himself and made ready for war! Though he did love a bit of competition the silly smile that plastered his face only widened. βWoooo!!!β He shouted his war cry and launched himself into battle!

What was summer camp if not an opportunity for fun and chaos? The moment she had arrived on day one, Greta had ensured that she sign up for every event she could find. With only one more summer left before graduation, she was not going to miss out on any chance for a bit of fun. Especially considering how she had received so much more than she had bargained for during the first week--and not in a good way. Eager to put that behind her and dog pile the bad with a fresh wave of good memories, the little Norwegian had tried one last time to twist the arms of any of her tent mates to join her in what was being called the Battle of the Seasons before rolling her eyes and heading out on her own, muttering something under her breath about broody spoilsports.
On arrival, her eyes lit up all over again, a wide grin splaying across her face at the sight of actual summer. A little squeal of glee peeled out ahead of her as she immediately kicked off her shoes to run barefoot through the sand, making it very clear very early that however the rules worked, she was going to be standing firm on the side of summer. The rules were simple enough, not all that different from previous year versions of similar sorts of games. While she didn't quite catch it all, she was confident that it wouldn't be too hard. Rule 1: don't get hit. Rule 2: take out everyone else.
Eager eyes had scanned the rest of those gathering, dejection growing with every new arrival. Durmstrang really was avoiding this event for some reason. Had she missed some sort of memo? The only faces she recognized were those very few whose names she didn't know but who she was pretty sure she'd seen in the air or on the piste a time or two last summer, or maybe the time before that. Most of the gathered seemed quite young. Made sense, she supposed, given the nature of silly fun they were about to have. Still, it sort of surprised her not to see more of her peers. They never usually passed up a chance to showcase their might. She would just have to carry their pride upon her shoulders, herself, she supposed.
Arming herself with a couple of water balloons, Greta cast one last glance about the group. A small girl with wild hair caught her eye. Her. (@Oonagh Brown) It was the same crazy child who had madly weaved across the slope at the start of the sledding race a few days earlier, bashing into other racers in an attempt to take out the competition early. While Greta had shouted after her at the time, an impish grin curled her lips now. "We are on summer team you and me now? I am Greta. Your name is what?" She asked in a heavy mixed eastern European accent while sidling up to the other girl. "I think we kill all winter soldiers, yes? I watch your back; you watch mine?"

Or, at least, that's how it worked when all AurΓ©lie could rely on was herself and a few others. With this game, it seemed that there would be so many on her side. She wondered whether it would get confusing, especially since she didn't know everyone on her team. Hopefully, she had a good, active team that shared her desperate desire to win.
When AurΓ©lie reached the playing field, she found that she would finally get to experience the real summer. The side she was on, Team Summer, featured a beach setting, complete with sand and rolling waves. There were even sunglasses, sunscreen, and sun hats being passed out. The French girl grabbed a hat and glasses, putting them on and truly feeling part of Team Summer. She then took in the rest of her surroundings, from the little sandcastles on her side of the field, to the glaciers on the winter side.
The planners had really outdone themselves with the game ideas this year. AurΓ©lie had been excited for each and every activity that she'd signed up for, and this one was no different. Interacting with @ Date - 24/07/24 WC 201/200 Color Legend - Mylo | Thoughts Dodgeball. It was a sport Mylo was familiar with, although they hadn't really played it before at such a large scale, and it was something he quite liked the idea of. Working together to try and survive as long as possible, and without magic! There weren't too many things Mylo had seen done without magic since going to Hogwarts so this was a welcome surprise.
Walking up to the pitch they saw two sides, a snow side and a summer side, both equally nice and both with their own charms to them. Having had their side assigned Mylo walked over to their team greeting everyone, with a few nerves but feeling like it was the polite thing to do.
"Hey guys! I hope this all goes well and that we at least have a few people standing at the end." Getting into position as well ready to throw a snowball at anyone. Mylo might not be extremely competitive but they weren't going to lose easily.
As the game started he looked around, searching for a good target to have their first snowball try and hit. Already seeing snowballs and water balloons being thrown, he had to make a decision and fast.

Thoughts
A sport she'd never heard of, but something she could win. Jamie was intrigued by the sport she had signed up for called dodgeball. It was a muggle sport, but with different seasons as the two teams, she'd done a bit of studying up on the sport to get herself as prepared as possible and to give herself the biggest chance of winning the game.
Stepping up to the pitch she couldn't help but be amazed at the clear line between the two seasons, she found it quite impressive to not have them bleed over into one another and to have two distinct seasons, although she 'felt bad' for the people in summer, as they'd be getting nice a warm and would all of a sudden be hit by a snowball, the temperature shock must be interesting.
Getting onto the pitch she hoped her teammates would be decent at it and not drag her down, she wouldn't hesitate to scream at them to get their act together but they didn't need to know that until it came to it.
Looking around she went through some of the strategies that would work best and that would give her the greatest chance of winning, it wasn't a really difficult choice in the end though. And knew she would be great during the game.

the 'fit: cyrus is wearing a black hoodie, black slacks and wizard crocs. he has a pair of sunglasses perched on his forehead.
Admittedly, Cyrus did not recall signing up for Team Winter, but here he was... in the midst of a Winter 'Wonderland'. Again. At least this time, Cyrus was somewhat prepared: his black hoodie was layered over T-shirt with Donald Duck on it, providing him with some insulation against any snowballs he might have to carry or get hit with. His black slacks, which were probably meant for fancier occasions, meant his legs would not get hit with snow or water without some sort of barrier. And his Crocs? Well, he wouldn't have soggy socks today.
He straightened his posture and decided that he would make the best of today, gallivanting his way through the new abode of Team Winter. He leapt from foot to foot, occasionally spinning in midair, his Crocs squeaking against the snow with every step he took.
He paused his audacious spinning to finally pick his starting position. He stood, leaning on one hip, pointing the other Croc-clad foot out in front of him, arms poised to either create a snowball, catch something, wave at someone, whatever he needed to do. It was just a pose, really, for the most dramatic boy in town.
He glanced in front of him at the alluring seaside landscape of Team Summer, a gentle sigh escaping his lips as he stared unabashedly at the beauty of nature. Oh, how he missed America. Maybe when he got home, he could convince his aunt to take him to the beach somewhere, or at least to Lake Placid, before he went off to school. Something like an early birthday present, no?
A much smaller student with a sand balloon in her hands caught his eye, and she was... rather familiar. Blue eyes squinted as Cyrus tried to recall her name, only to realise... he didn't know it, or at least, he didn't remember it. But he watched as she disappeared behind a sand dune, his hand raised in an almost-forgotten wave as he watched the kid leave.
She was interesting, was all he could remember. Loud. Not unlike he had been when he was her age. He would have to get to know her, he decided, maybe take her under his wing. Did she like ducks?

Now this was certainly going to be interesting. Anyone who had spent most of summer camp complaining about how it wasn't actually summer camp would finally be given the resources to take out their frustration in a surprisingly rule-following way. The field of battle was tastefully decorated to look like a summer beach on one side, and a winter wonderland on the other. Each team would also be equipped with different projectiles- snowballs for team winter and weird squishy things for team summer. What were those? They peered over at the buckets of them resting on the sand, trying to figure out what they were meant to be. Cass had never seen one of those things in their entire life.
They took a step towards them to have a closer look, then remembered they should probably find out if they were on team summer at all first. Taking a look at the teams, their heart sank to find out that they would be defending the winter wilderness today. It would appear that they would be finding out what the strange squishy objects were from firsthand experience. Winter wasn't a bad side to be on though- they would be glad to fight in its name. They wandered over to take their place among the snow, taking a look around them at their teammates. The boy who had been handing out "rubber ducks" from earlier would be one of their allies in claiming victory, it seemed @Koko Riddle as Cyrus Darsel. Perhaps they were projectiles? The true purpose of the "ducks" was still unknown to them.
On the opposing side however, they recognised the blond girl who had been knocking into other peoples sleds during the sled racing @Oonagh Brown. It would be interesting to be on the other side to her if she planned to use such dirty tactics again. Cass was far from against cheating- in some sports, cheating was basically part of the game. In that specific race though, it had seemed a little overkill for a friendly event. They tapped their foot, waiting for others to arrive so that this fight could begin.

She would enter the Battle of the Seasons, something she wouldnβt have thought before coming to camp. But she needed to experience more and different things, so she wanted to participate in as much as she could. But this sounded so much fun. She looked at the beautiful landscape that was created for them to play on. On one side, the wintry weather of the camp wad kept, and snowbanks and snowmen stood there for protection to hide. On the other side, the contrast couldnβt be bigger, a sunlit beach with sand dunes. Ruby was a bit disappointed she wasnβt put in team Summer, but just for the beach. But it couldnβt get her down. Now I get to make snowballs, thatβs nice too. At least we stay in theme today. She grabbed some earmuffs and mittens as she entered the arena, and greeted her teammates. She recognised a few of them, and was glad. She looked over to the other team, and recognised some people there as well. This could be interesting. She tried to take mental notes of the one she could possibly target. She turned back around and waved at her teammates before taking cover behind one of the huge piles of snow.
