Sketching in the library
Date: September 2024 WC: 286/200
It’s a rainy day in September and Abbey just ate lunch in the great hall with some friends. She hasn’t drawn or sewed anything since she left her home in Liverpool and has been missing doing it a lot. Abbey brought two sketchbooks and a lot of her art and sewing supplies to Hogwarts and she doesn’t regret it at all, because she just knows she’s going to use it a lot in the future on rainy days like this.
Abbey opened the heavy, big wooden door into the library and walked into the room. The library was big and it wasn’t as many people in there as she had expected. Abbey walked down the aisle of bookshelves and found a desk at the very end of the room where it wasn’t a soul of people. She sat down all her things on the wooden desk and sat down on the wood chair in front of her. Before starting she leaned back in her chair and enjoyed the silence in the little corner for a few minutes. No one could see her and it was a perfect place to sit in silence and sketch alone.
She took out a pen and a little glass bottle of ink from her backpack and put it in front of her. Then she reached her hand back into her backpack to grab a sketchbook.
First she drew some fruits with faces and after that she drew farm animals. All the drawings turned out great in her opinion and she had a lot of fun drawing. After drawing a few animals she started drawing weird creatures that she really just created in the moment.

Sketching in the library
✿✿✿ ✿✿✿It wasn’t a very nice day, to be honest. Supper had finished a small while ago. Eugenia sat in the library all alone. She was near the librarian’s desk with some sketching supplies. A friend of hers had given them to her for Eugenia’s 11th birthday and she wanted to use them frequently. Now, she had filled almost half of it, but still had quite a few pages which were empty. She wanted to complete it during her years at Hogwarts.
Today, she really wanted to sketch a person. Faces and portraits in general were not her forté, but she always tried to stray outside her comfort zone. There was only one problem. She couldn’t find any inspiration. Eugenia walked through the library, skimming the hoards of students here to study, practice and read. None of them though seemed interesting.
Eugenia decided to open a book. Maybe I’ll find the image of some person in there. Maybe they are interesting enough to draw. She saw the first few pages, then started flipping the rest of the book’s pages. Soon enough, she realised that this book had no pictures. So she picked another. Still, there was no specific illustration that made her want to draw. Eugenia got up from the table she was sitting and began walking around once again.
This rainy day of September seemed to be a day devoid of inspiration, at least that was what she thought. Eugenia, tired of all the walking sat down on a chair to rest for a bit. Just then, Eugenia looked up. At the opposite side of this awkwardly placed chair stood a lonely desk where a beautiful girl was sitting. Her brunette hair, which was in an elegant hairstyle, cascaded down her shoulders and her face was ideal for Eugenia’s art, it seemed perfectly proportional . Eugenia was a bit dumbfounded, but kept herself together.
With a slightly shy smile on her face, Eugenia walked towards the girl. She was also sketching, although her art didn’t look like hers. Eugenia addressed her in a calm and friendly tone, trying not to scare her. Hello. I am Eugenia. I like your drawings, it is one of my interests too. I would like to ask permission from you, as I want to draw you. A portrait, I mean, in my sketchbook. Would you mind? I can give it to you once I finish it.

Abbey looked up as the Hufflepuff girl approached her. “Hello. I am Eugenia. I like your drawings, it is one of my interests too. I would like to ask permission from you, as I want to draw you. A portrait, I mean, in my sketchbook. Would you mind? I can give it to you once I finish it.” The girl said with a slightly shy smile on her face. The girl had said a lot at once Abbey thought. She wasn’t sure if she should say thank you first or if she should introduce herself. She started with a friendly smile. She smiled at the girl and looked down at her sketchbook thinking about what to answer. “I don’t mind at all” She replied with in a friendly tone looking up at the girl again. Answering the girls question seemed like the best thing to respond with first. She had never been drawn before and thought it sounded really exciting, so why not just say yes. She wasn’t sure if she would ever get the chance to be drawn ever again. “and I’m glad you like my drawings.” she continued.
Abbey looked back down at her open sketchbook. The two pages in front of her were both full of little ink sketches. She turned the pages over to two plank ones and began sketching again. This time she drew some bookshelves and cats. The girl drew about two and a half cats and two bookshelves before she realised she had forgotten to introduce herself to the girl standing in front of her. She looked up at the girl again, this time in embarrassment. “I’m Abbey by the way, Abbey Thompson.” her cheeks were a little red of embarrassment, but it wasn’t something you could really notice. She hesitated a little about if she should add a “nice to meet you”or not, but after not too long she decided to do it out of kindness. “Nice to meet you Eugenia”

✿✿✿ ✿✿✿Eugenia stood there and waited. Perhaps she had said too much. She looked up to the girl. She didn’t mined. Excited by the girl’s reply, Eugenia sat at a desk opposite to the one the girl was sitting at. She opened the closed sketchbook once again and began drawing. She drew the girl’s nice, circular face, her almond eyes and part of her hair. It was a bit difficult drawing people, but Eugenia still enjoyed it.
Soon enough, the other girl began drawing once again. Eugenia got an urge to giggle. They were both drawing now. What an odd way to meet a person. And what an odd way to try and get to know each other. At least both of us like art. That is something that could act as a conversation starter. Eugenia looked up, shaping the girl’s nose. Well, in a bit. I’ll focus for a minute in my artwork and then I might speak to her.
A bit of time passed. The girl’s face was now drawn, without the details of course, and Eugenia got an urge to talk to the girl. But inside her, there was something telling her not to. How could she address the girl, she didn’t even know her name. Then, she heard the girl’s soft voice again. Oh, my name is Abbey by the way. Abbey Thompson. Great! The girl had chimed in at the perfect time, saving Eugenia from loads of embarrassment. Now, she could speak.
So Abbey, what do you like to do in your free time? What are your hobbies? Eugenia was careful not to say to much this time. She smiled softly and went back to drawing Abbey. She was almost finished with her sketch. Eugenia chose not to add any color. She continued drawing quietly, waiting for the girl to answer.

Abbey looked down at her sketchbook after she had introduced herself. She quickly looked up again as the girl asked her another question right after. “So Abbey, what do you like to do in your free time? What are your hobbies?” Eugenia asked. Abbey liked the question and she was happy the girl wanted to have a conversation. Just sitting there in silence could become a little embarrassing and awkward after a while. Abbey thought the girl seemed nice and would like to get to know her better. She didn’t take to long before she answered Eugenia. “I like sewing and like you can probably see, I like drawing.” Abbey smiled at Eugenia and asked back. “What about you. Any other hobbies other than art?” she said in a calm tone curious. Before Eugenia got the time to answer her Abbey quickly added another one of her hobbies that she had forgotten to tell Eugenia about. “I also like reading. I read a lot!” It was true. Abbey did read a lot, but to everyone’s surprise she actually wasn’t that good at school. Like most book readers her age were. She wasn’t bad either, but just not as good as people that knew how much she read had expected her to be. She read a lot of fantasy and most of the books she read was what inspired her to draw the characters and creatures in her sketchbook.

Well, it was pleasant, sitting here in the library. Eugenia continued sketching and adding the final details. For a moment, she stopped, as she heard Abbey’s words. She liked knitting? And reading? Wow. We are quite the similar people. It seems that we both like some of the same things. I never thought that we had almost the same interests. Never. She made a curious grin and began talking right after Abbey had finished.
Well, Abbey, I do have other interests. I do like reading books, making stories. And I enjoy knitting too. But not traditional knitting. Crocheting. It is almost like knitting but you use just a single hook instead of two. Really good stuff. Funny how we seem to have the same interests, but have never met before today. Eugenia smiled. Had she said much? Not really. Other times, she had blundered much worse when trying to socialise. And now, it was not the time for any casual blunder.
She turned her attention back to her sketch of Abbey. It was not really the best thing ever, but she counted it as a win, judging by her mediocre art skills. Carefully cutting the paper from the sketchbook, she placed the portrait right in front of its subject. I finished the portrait. Here it is. Do whatever you wish with it, it’s now yours. I don’t mind if you criticise me, this is not a very good art piece, to be honest. I just hope you like it. Eugenia took a deep breath and stretched her neck a bit. This sitting and drawing. It had strained her neck. But it seemed to be worth it.

Abbey noticed that Eugenia must of either hear wrong or just accidentally said the wrong word, because Abbey said she liked sewing not knitting. It wasn’t a big deal, but Abbey wasn’t sure how to tell Eugenia she had hear the wrong word. She smiled a friendly smile at her when she finished her sentence. It was right that they had a lot in common, like reading and art.
“Yeah, we seem to have a lot in common. Crocheting seems like a cool hobby, and knitting too, but I think you heard the wrong word. I do sewing, not knitting.” Abbey smiled so Eugenia wouldn’t feel embarrassed or bad about it. “Not a big deal, just wanted to let you know.”
Abbey looked down at the drawing of herself that Eugenia had just given her. It was a pretty good drawing and you could see who the drawing was off. “I love it, it’s so cool! You can definitely see that that’s me.” She said happy. It was so cool being drawn for the first time. “I’m definitely hanging this up in my dormitory.” she smiled at the girl before she leaned down to put the drawing into her backpack.

✿✿✿ ✿✿✿Eugenia was one of the biggest Perfectionists you have ever met. Well, this was reflected in everything she did. While doing this drawing, she focused not on just the shape, but on the details too, looking a lot at Abbey to try and match her unique characteristics. She wasn’t really good at portraits. It really looked a bit silly. She couldn’t be ashamed of it now. Eugenia had to keep going.
Sitting on that lone desk, she carefully listened to Abbey’s reply. Oh my god. She said sewing, not knitting! Why am I such an idiot? Can’t I just hear stuff correctly? I wonder. And how I didn’t want to blunder right now… Wishes are not always fulfilled, I guess. She now had to try and save the situation. It was a stupid mistake, but she had to “justify” it a bit. Oh my, I’m so sorry. I’m so absent minded right now, totally immersed in this drawing. I thought you said knitting! Still, sewing sounds quite nice, I’d like to see some of your works! Also, I can give you some of my crochet animals and stuff, you can sew stuff on them if you want! That was the only thing she could think of saying right now.
Looking at her watch, Eugenia realised that she had only a bit of time left before dinner. Abbey’s reaction to the drawing was totally wholesome, she loved it. I’m glad you liked it. And hang it if you wish. It’s not the best, but at least you like it. Looking at her watch, she spoke again. In a bit, dinner will start. I think we should get going. Thanks for letting me draw you! I hope I see you in the common room! The Greek girl packed her art supplies, and stormed off back to the common room. After such a nice day, she couldn’t miss dinner.

Abbey looked down at the drawing appreciating that Eugenia had spent her time drawing her. “I’m glad you liked it. And hang it if you wish. It’s not the best, but at least you like it.” Eugenia said. Abbey looked up and smiled politely as a reply. She noticed that Eugenia then looked at her watch. Abbey didn’t know what time it was, but she thought it was at least an hour before dinner started. She felt like she had just finished lunch in the great hall and she wasn’t feeling too hungry in the moment.
Eugenia looked up form her watch. “In a bit, dinner will start. I think we should get going. Thanks for letting me draw you! I hope I see you in the common room!” The girl said and began packing her things. Oh, so dinner was now! Abbey thought to herself, kind shocked. Time flies by fast! It did, at least today.
“No Problem! I hope I’ll see you again soon.” Abbey said meaning every word. She then packed her own things into her backpack and left the library right after Eugenia. Meeting Eugenia had made her day!
