"CHEATER!" The race had barely even started, snow flying in a spray of powder, before some of the racers decided to take it upon themselves to cause chaos. Not that Greta could really blame them. She narrowly avoided collision herself, digging heels into the snow to try to slow her pace and veer her direction as the crazy child wove across the narrow expanse of the steep incline, her own sled threatening loss of control all the while. She heard, more than saw, the smack of sleds nearby and the blur of victims whizzing back behind them, grinning like a madman at their misfortune. So it was going to be like that. From then on, she kept her head on a loop, watching for potential attackers as much as the upcoming path as she kept her profile low to try to make up the ground she'd lost.
It was hard to see very well with the conditions. It felt like ice crystals were forming on her eyelashes as she squinted into the wall of oncoming wind. This was not as easy as flying. The broom was so much more responsive to her whims; the sled required actual brawn to adjust and control its trajectory. Something she sorely lacked. Nevertheless, she somehow came out the bottom of the steep hill largely unscathed, quickly finding herself in the midst of a mass of racers as the various ways converged upon each other. There wasn't a lot of time to maneuver herself into an ideal position, nor a lot of space. She tried to lean herself over to what looked like an easy route, but found herself blocked, bottle-necked into what was decidedly not. A squeal of surprise broke out the first time the ground suddenly disappeared from under her, her stomach launching itself into her throat as a feeling of weightlessness took hold. It lasted for all of a second before she fell back to earth with a THUMP only to find herself at the foot of another lift. Whose bright idea was it to include moguls on a sledding hill?!

Cass did slightly question if this sled race was following its own rules. Then again, no one said no sabotage. They were tempted to take it a bit further and throw some spells at their competitors, but decided that perhaps they should let someone else try that idea out before they risked it. Taking a look behind them, a girl with wild blond hair appeared to also have a similar idea. Ramming others sleds did seem a little mean though, if you didn't know them beforehand. They quickly snapped their head around back towards the paths ahead of them, noticing that somehow they had made it into the lead. Well- they were technically tied with an older boy.
As the paths rejoined into one, they saw that the race organiser had also apparently engaged in sabotage. Wasn't that cheating as well? They supposed it was his race. But still, terrible behaviour! Cass squinted up at him all comfy on his broomstick while they hurtled down the slope on a wooden object they still weren't quite sure how to steer. They would be remembering this Tommy Patterson. All to soon the paths diverged once again, and this time the fastest route wasn't immediately clear. The boring path was clearly not an option, and the tunnel made something in their stomach twist and tie itself in knots. No going underground for them today thank you. Or ever. Leaning off the edge of their sled, they tried to steer themselves toward the bumpier path.

About thirty seconds after taking off, Stephen quickly caught up to the first of the many broom sledders who, like him, apparently had a taste for adventure. Things had gone easily that first thirty seconds, but as he came upon the other racers, snow, ice, and even some muddy, cold sludge had started kicking up at him from the back of the others' sleds. He felt it all pelting his cheeks and clothing, and worst of all, rippling through his hair. He inwardly groaned. Not many knew it, but he was a fastidious neatnik of the highest order. Luckily, the hairpin turns and human obstacles in front of him were more pressing and moved his attention away from the filth on his person.
The slope was steep, and as he predicted, those who had gone before him had pretty much packed the snow down for him, so his sled was facing less resistance and he was making hella excellent time. He was zipping in and out and around everyone and everything. It was all going great until he came upon a curly-haired, she-devil who was a one woman Wreck-It Ralph, before said character was plagued with a hero complex. This version was a little menace and sent a redheaded girl flying off her sled. The thing of it was though, it opened up a great opportunity for Stephen when the redhead went airborne. He steered right for the spot where she'd been nanoseconds before and sailed right past the both of them. He looked back over his shoulder just in time to see that the redhead actually had not been tossed over the side of the mountain, so he sped on ahead, catching up to the leader.
The guy was younger but clearly fast. Stephen grinned and nodded his way and then they came to the end of the narrow slope as it looked like all paths converged at this point. Looking ahead only, with no one in front of him and only to his side, he read the trail signs and decided in no time flat that the underground ice tunnel was right up his alley. He pulled the steering rope to the left and quickly veered away from the co-leader as he now raced towards the tunnel.
He'd heard some of the tents had underground tunnels with cave drawings and he was sort of curious about that. Maybe this would be similar. Not knowing what to expect, he could hear the sled beginning to shave ice rather than the snowplowing it had been doing as he took a stomach churning plunge into momentary darkness.
Dang! That was a Pirates of the Caribbean free fall kinda moment. He was joking with that Patterson kid when he told him to remember his face in case he flew off into a cavernous abyss. His instincts had always served him well. He hoped this time would be no different. Would be a shame if his purple sled really was all that was ever found of the late, could-have-been-great, Stephen Schwartz. EmmaLee would be so sad. Miles would be annoyed by his stupidity, if he thought on it at all, and then he, too, might be sad. But what of his father? Stephen felt certain he would be equal measures of furious and inconsolable.
Hopefully. Oy.
Maybe it was time to get his wand out and put a little light on the subject, just in case. He was just starting to reach for it when his eyes began to adjust to his surroundings. The ice was clear and tinged with blue. He knew this because the sun's position in the sky behind him was at the perfect angle to enter as he did. The rays lit up the first wall of ice and then refracted off all the ice walls around him, allowing him to see his path to safety. It was eerily quiet, except for the random dripping sounds and the skimming of the wooden sled on the rough ice, but it was also breathtakingly beautiful. And because it was ice, his sled speed had increased.
The one environmental hazard he was really having to navigate with a good deal of concentration were the ginormous icicles. Small ones, he had heard, that formed on roof lines during hard freezes, killed people every year back home in the States once they began to thaw. These had to be 5-10 times larger than the ones he'd read about, and he was reminded that it was not actually winter and there was no hard freeze to keep these ice giants attached to the tunnel's ceiling.
For the first time this summer, he prayed that it'd continue to remain frigid just long enough to keep him from becoming an impaled Schwartz-kabob.

Aurélie slid faster and faster, enjoying the ride. How come she'd never tried sledding before? She closed her eyes, gleefully sledding, as carefree as possible until... she felt the path shaking. Opening her eyes with alarm, Aurélie realised that the sides of the path that she'd chosen were falling off.
What in the world? That wasn't supposed to happen, right? Maybe Aurélie should've read the fine print of this race more carefully. Trying to steer her sled to the middle of the path, the French girl felt herself panicking. She was not good under pressure.
Squinting past the snow, the girl spotted three paths ahead of her. One was a tunnel that went underground. Another was a bumpy path. And the last option was the one that was somewhere in the middle of steep and flat. "Which one, Aurélie? Which one?" She whispered to herself, eyes widening as the three choices came closer and closer.
She had to make her choice now, before she either fell off the path or randomly went into one. Not at all trusting the snow tunnel— what if it collapsed onto her while she was under?— Aurélie struggled to steer herself towards the bumpy one. At least there she had a chance to go fast and make up for her delay.
At the last moment, the sled turned just like the French girl had wanted it to and ended up on the path with the small bumps. Aurélie grinned, though it was laced with worry. Hopefully nothing would go wrong on this chosen path.

Colby was absolutely right. That random girl was crazy in knocking off so many people off of their sled. Perhaps Colby should not have said anything because she was next. Holding on for dear life, Colby did not want to meet the snow just yet. They just started! Her sled was slammed into, but luckily it slowed her down than bumping her off. Colby could see a number of sledders go ahead of her. She felt like she was in last place. Looking behind her, she saw that there were still others trying to catch up. That made her feel a little better. But now was time to focus.
Colby leaned forward, trying to get some speed. It wasn't until she saw that the trail was splitting once more into three paths. She could either choose a path that was not steep or too flat but rather boring, a snow tunnel going underground, or a path filled with small bumps. As much as the tunnel seemed cool to go through, the last thing she wanted was to be near someone else who was crazy and would do something to make it cave-in. It was decided that catching some air may be the best way to catch speed and go faster down the hill. It looked like she wasn't alone in choosing this path.

Ruby pushed her sled forward and started down the path she chose. As fast as she dared to go she avoided all the trees. Sometimes she would here another sled near her, or she would she a flash in the corner of her eye. The others were close and gaining on her. Two of the others on her path slid by as she had to leave her path for a moment to avoid a big tree. It became harder and harder to see the right path, as the snow flew in her sled and in her eyes. She squinted, and almost collided with another sled. Luckily she could hold the sled tight and she kept on going.
As she cleared the forest, she saw a lot of people before her. A little bit disappointed, she looked forward at the road to come. This isn’t over yet. I just have to choose the right path next. But she had to make a decision very fast, if she didn’t want to lose more ground on her competitors.
She looked at each of the paths. The path filled with small bumps seemed a bit too bumpy for her. She already had survived the trees, this one she would skip. The boring path looked, well, boring. Maybe there would be something hidden. It couldn’t be that easy. She saw the others before her choose their path, and guided her own sled towards the snow tunnel that goes underground and hoped for the best.

EmmaLee nodded as Aurélie confirmed that she was having a good time at camp and told EmmaLee that she had chosen the Frozen Palace tent. It would be nice to be able to see the other tents. As Aurélie continued to speak about her excitement for this activity specifically, EmmaLee giggled a little and used her foot to push the sled back and forth along the ground, sheepishly.
"Well, honestly, I haven't been as excited about this activity as I have about some of the others. Once I got here though, it looked fun." She said with a wide smile, pushing off as Aurélie did.
"Good luck!" She said with a laugh as they both whooshed down the windy path. Mere moments after the racers took off, someone, a boy with dark hair whooshed by on a broom and caused the sides of the path to collapse. EmmaLee frowned as she lowered her foot onto the ground like a brake to slow her sled down and keep herself from being blown off the path. Did he.... do that on purpose? Or was it an accident?
EmmaLee looked ahead and behind her, worried about Aurélie the most but also concerned about the other students on this path. Thankfully, the younger girl was very far ahead of her and seemed to already be past the worst of it. There was only one person behind EmmaLee and he seemed alright as he tailed her through the narrow way.
When the path widened out and didn't seem so dangerous, EmmaLee saw that she only had a moment to pick from three more paths. If she squinted, she could just see Aurélie turn onto the bumpier path and so EmmaLee turned her foot like a rutter, leaned, and directed her sled to follow her friend. If this was going to be dangerous, EmmaLee wanted to follow her friend as closely as possible.
Granted, she could still enjoy the ride, and EmmaLee laughed as she swooped through the middle calm area and up one of the bumps of the path she chose, her sled lifting off the ground and flying for a bit before smoothly landing down and cresting the next bump.

“Quem não arrisca não petisca.”

("Those who don't risk don't snack/eat")
Manu set off down the windy, wide path with all the confidence of a lion stalking a mouse, with others doing their best to interact with her, like a boy about her age who shot her what she could only assume to be a flirtatious grin as well as a younger voice shouting luck to her in English from behind her; Manu looked back to the girl who had yelled, naught but a child, really, with dark hair and features that boasted some sort of Hispanic heritage. Not a Castelobruxo student, though, for Manu didn't recognise her nor her accent. Manu quirked an eyebrow at her, but immediately went over a bump in the road and locked her focus back onto the path in front of her.
It was too late, though. The windy, but wide, section of the obstacle-course-of-sorts seemed to collapse immediately from all sides, and Manu shrieked in horror but her shout of warning was obscured by falling snow. Struggling through on her sled, she just barely made it out the other side - luckily ahead of most who had chosen the same path as her due to her early start, but not nearly enough to take the lead. Whipping her head back and forth, dark curls whirling around her head in a spray of messy brown ringlets, Manu decided that she was likely somewhere in the middle of a pack.
It could have been worse. She could have been last.
Reinvigorated, at least mentally, Manu shook off the last of the snow and persevered forwards. She glanced backwards once more to find the boy from earlier, the one who had grinned, behind her by a few people; this time, it was Manu who grinned. "If you can, stay with the day, slow one," she ribbed to him over her shoulder as she sped off once again down the middle path, hoping that it wouldn't disadvantage her as it had before. "Stay with the day" is a very rough translation of "catch/keep up"!

Oonagh threw an arm in the air and whooped as she trashed the girl's sled, flipping it over mid-air. As she made her way to the front, she grinned even more. There were only a few students still left ahead of her, after she had spent her time crashing into the sides of as many students as she could. When she won, she would be able to tell people she had deserved that win; fought tooth and nail to get ahead.
"Hey Snowflake! Don't chicken out just yet, unless you want the easy way out," she dared, before swooping down into the underground snow tunnel. She hoped it would collapse after her, covering anyone who came after her in a thick blanket of snow. "You think yelling in her will make this tunnel collapse?" Her voice was suspiciously loud when she called this out to those who shared this path with her. This was her type of game, this race. Turned out the one thing that beat sledding down a hill dangerously with no hesitation was doing it midair. Even the slightest movement made her sled respond and the unruly wind tugged at her hair, pulling it back as she made it ahead.

It was quite a windy path, but at least it was safer than the other ones. There was nothing to bump into and nothing to pose an immediate threat to the people sledding.
That was until another student came out, the boy Mylo had gotten his sled from, and started sabotaging the route. Causing the sides of the path to collapse and to create a very narrow path, leaving Mylo behind everyone. Trying to keep themselves stable and on the path itself, not bothering to worry about speeding up or overtaking anybody, they eventually converged with the rest of the people. Mylo seeing a few people ahead of them that they had seen getting their sleds as well.
Before them there were another 3 choices, not having too much time to decide Mylo went with their instinct and decided on the tunnel. He didn't know why, the path could be very dangerous if it collapsed on them, but for some reason he didn't have any anxiety about choosing it and as such it would be the best choice.
