What a Strange, Magical Place
It was a beautiful evening; the sun was beginning to sink beneath the horizon, casting long, cool shadows upon the courtyard walls. Rowan stood by one of these walls, gently fiddling with one of the vines of ivy crawling down it, admiring the leaves, and watching the students and professors mull about the courtyard. This was one of her favourite places in the castle, especially when there were so few people to crowd it. Rowan could watch the fountain’s falling water and sit on the stone, chilled from the evening breeze. The sky was a pale blue color, with clouds making their ways across it. It felt surreal.
This evening wasn’t like others, though. It had been two weeks that Rowan had been at Hogwarts, and she was ready to explore. Though she liked to tell herself that she had gotten over the initial overwhelmingness of the school’s colossal size, she still felt a lurch of both anxiety and adrenaline when she thought about trying to figure it out rather then blindly following people she recognized to her classes. In fact, Rowan had mapped out very specifically the older students who had classes nearby or even next to her own at a certain point in the day, and had made it a routine to trail behind them each passing period.
Perhaps Hogwarts wouldn’t seem so daunting if she had somebody to explore it with. Rowan had found herself longing for such often over the last week; but her only friends had ever been muggles, and she found that she was unable to bring herself to truly make an effort on relationships. She already had so much going on, with trying to figure out her classes, and magic, and the school’s layout. But she was lonely, and it seemed to only now be dawning on her.
Rowan turned and walked back through the corridors into the building, and found herself in the Small Hall. She nearly bumped in to, but narrowly avoided, another young girl, with long and smooth black hair, staring up at the paintings. Rowan tried to follow her gaze, but couldn’t decide which one the girl was looking at. Without thinking much about it, Rowan stepped forward to stand next to her, lifting her chin to appear more confident then she was. The other girl had on a green tie— another Slytherin.“Hello.”

What a Strange, Magical Place
Rowan didn't shift her gaze from the paintings, as she had never truly noticed them before. They were alive, like all the ones in this tremendous castle. She still wasn't quite used to it, and jumped occasionally when she encountered one. "Rowan," she said, unconsiously pulling at her cloak. "It's strange, isn't it, how the paintings move?" She paused. "Though, of course, you're likely used to it, I'm sure you have ones like them at home." Rowan's cheeks flushed pink, embarassed. She was glad that the only light in the hall came from the smoldering fireplace, which lit their faces regardless with its red and orange flames.
The other girl held herself in a similar way to Rowan; she seemed constantly lost in thought. This idea brought comfort. Rowan moved closer to the fire and held out her hands, wanting to get warm. It had been chilly in the courtyard. "This castle- school-is full of strange and magical things." Rowan eventually moved her head to focus on Violet, and she allowed a small smile to form on her face. "You're in Slytherin, too. A first year." It wasn't so much of a question, Rowan knew it was true. She recognized the girl from the sorting ceremony. "Have you gotten much of a chance to explore yet?" Rowan's voice was quiet and excited, a trace of mischief hiding underneath. She knew that they were supposed to be in their dormitories very soon, but the idea of creeping through the corridors at nighttime sent a sort of thrill through her.

What a Strange, Magical Place
Rowan’s cheeks turned even more red, and noticeably not from the fire. “And so what if I am? What do you have to say about it?” The words came out aggressive and snappish, and Rowan had to reground herself before continuing. “Sorry,” she muttered, wincing slightly at the word, and turning her head away to pretend to focus on another painting. Her mother had taught her to always apologize for lashing out at people, which seemed silly to Rowan, especially if it was self-defense, or they deserved it. But in this case, neither was true for Violeta, so Rowan figured she may as well apologize. She didn’t continue with the issue; she felt as if Violeta had gotten her answer. Rowan felt embarrassed for herself appearing so naive, though she supposed she was when it came to the wizarding world- however reluctant she was to admit it.
Rowan took a breath and turned back towards the other girl. “No, I haven’t gotten the chance, but-“ she glanced this way and that, to ensure that nobody else was around, a mischievous grin playing at her lips. “We still have an hour or two before we have to be in our dormitories. And- don’t tell- I was thinking about not going to bed tonight. Staying out.” For the first time, it dawned on Rowan that exploring this vast castle at night, on her own, would be quite terrifying. It felt haunted at times, the flames flickering menacingly atop the torches, the ghosts whispering in the walls, the ceilings so high that when one peers above, all they can see is darkness. “You ought to come with me!” She declared, taking a couple of steps towards the entrance. “Don’t be a scaredy-cat,” the young girl teased, not unkindly. “Don’t you want to explore as well?”

OOC notes: It is currently my plan to have the two get lost and scared on the grand staircase after exploring around, and make it back to the common room just a little after curfew. However, right now, Rowan doesn’t understand the consequences of being out of the common room after 8pm and therefore is thinking about sneaking out. Perhaps later in the RP, Violet can scare her out of the idea? I feel like it’s a bit too early in the year for Rowan to get a detention haha!

What a Strange, Magical Place
Rowan wiped her hands on her robe and shrugged, a gleam in her eyes. "I used to get detentions at my old school. My muggle school," she added, feeling a sudden need to differentiate herself from the muggle world. "They were never worrisome." She walked out of the Small Hall quickly and with a bounce in her step, eager for their adventure. Rowan, not usually one to think before she speaks, spoke aloud as she walked: "You're from America." It wasn't so much of a question as a blatant observation. She heard Violet's voice again behind her, warning her about calling her a scaredy-cat, and stopped, spinning on her heels to study the other girl. Rowan felt a smile playing at her lips; she liked Violet's assertiveness, even if it intimidated her slightly. She was accustomed to not recieving retorts to her teasing, and so this was unexpected to her. After a few moments of looking at Violet, Rowan let the grin slip through. "Alright then, Violeta," she said, adding the "a" in an attempt to prod at the other Slytherin's buttons once again. "Though I highly doubt you'd frighten me." Rowan was not looking for an argument nor to make an enemy, rather, this was her odd way of communicating. She would learn better ways over time, and she could see a future acquaintanceship with this girl. Perhaps even a friendship, but Rowan knows that her heart is hard to pry open to let others in.
She led the way through the Enterance Hall and into the tall tower known as the Grand Staircase. Thus was also when Rowan realized that as much as possible, she had been avoiding this place out of her uncertainty and anxiety involving the shifting staircases. She glanced behind her to make sure that Violet had followed, and exchanged a questioning look with the girl. One that seemed to ask, what do you know? "I haven't been here much, so I can't promise that I'll know where we're going," Rowan said. Her voice had softened slightly and was noticeably more amiable. As if she had let a sort of mask fall, and had determined that Violet was somebody who she'd be willing- perhaps even looking forward to- spending time with. It felt good to not be alone. One of the ground staircases began to move towards them, and Rowan jumped slightly before letting out a delighted squeal and leaping onto the staircase, landing on her knees and pulling herself up. "Come on!" She called with a grin; a genuine one.
