Last night at the opening feast, Emily had mentioned she had met an unsavory Ilvermorny student over the short break before Summer Camp. While Scout assumes that Emily didn't catch his name, she had already come up with a few for herself. Namely 'meanie' and 'asshole', but the second one would definitely get her in trouble in front of her parents. So, meanie it was. And whoever this student was was definitely a meanie- Emily was so nice and he was probably just some loser!

Before Scout could get herself worked up over the situation, she took a quick breather. It was just her and Emily walking around the Campsite and chatting. It was kind of cold (given the snow), so Scout had the hood of her jacket up. It was like a win-win situation, she could protect herself from the sun and she could stay warm. Ingenious!

"So... about that boy from Ilvermorny," Scout started, fiddling with the strings around her hood. "do you like- do you remember what he looks like? Was he ugly?" No matter what answer Emily would give, Scout was still under the absolute belief that the boy that had been cruel to her friend was a disgusting animal of the vermin variety, that was for sure!

"Remember that boy I mentioned earlier, Zyair?" She asks, kicking the snow with her tennis shoes. She was having trouble standing still again, and playing with string wasn't enough. "I think he realized I was a witch 'cause-" she leans in to whisper, "because like I think he saw that gap in my teeth, where my fangs usually are. Do you think he knew I was a dhampir?"

It was... definitely unlikely, but the thought had eaten Scout up last night and she felt like she had to voice her concerns to one of the only people who knew she was a dhampir. Even though Emily had shown a lot of interest and kindness to Scout's vampirism she... yeah, she couldn't say the same for others. A thought of stakes and garlic from her elementary school flickered in Scout's mind, but she brushed the thought away.

It was different now, since she could cast spells and protect herself but still... against another witch or wizard? She would be chopped liver, especially against someone stronger than her. But, whatever, she'd just have to get better at casting spells so she could never be knocked down!

Emily had almost forgotten what snowy mornings looked like since back home, there would only ever be slush and sleet. As she and Scout wandered about the grounds of the quidditch stadium she couldn't help beaming at the glossy shine as the early morning sunshine cascaded its light against the snow. Wrapped up in a wool jumper and her leggings clung snuggly underneath her long skirt, she walked pleasantly alongside her Gryffin-buddy as they willed the time away.

All of a sudden the conversation derailed and Emily suddenly found herself being asked about the Ilvermorny boy she had failed miserably on the last several occasions to make friends with. She laughed sheepishly as she thought back to him and his sourpuss attitude.

"Oh yeah... I did mention him, didn't I... Well, he's quite tall. A little taller than the two of us. Short brown wavy hair... He tends to walk around with his hands in his pockets a lot of the time."

She almost laughed at Scout's genuine inquiry if the boy was "ugly" or not. No, not really, she had to admit. He had looks. His attitude however was beyond ugly by comparison. Emily could've easily said "Just look for a grumpy git." given his mood. No doubt Scout would be able to spot him a mile off in a crowd of students at summer camp. Saying that, Emily could tell from day one that there was more to him than meets the eye, if their earlier encounter was anything to hint at from before. For now though, she was still reeling at being shouted at and pushed at all for asking about a photo he had with him the day they met. A photo.

"I wouldn't worry about him though," she said rather dismissively. "Sooner or later, he'll wisen up. It takes all kinds of mental and physical energy to keep yourself bricked up like that."

A few more minutes passed and the conversation steered towards the focus of a much nicer sounding individual. Emily had been pleased to learn that Scout made a friend from Uagadou. He sounded a lot friendlier than the boy from Ilvermorny from what Scout talks of him, that's for sure. But Emily couldn't help the unease Scout was projecting. It was just as Emily was about to ask if something was bothering her that her buddy leaned in and whispered something that made Emily blink in surprise.

She responded in the same low voice. "Really? You think he knows?" Emily knew Scout tended to keep her vampirism to herself for the most part, so she could understand the concern she probably has at the prospect of her new friend perhaps being sceptical of this revelation. That wasn't going to stop Emily from smiling her usual charming grin and nudging Scout's shoulder reassuringly.

"Whether he suspects it or not, I doubt he'd think any less of you. Don't let the fact that you're a little different deter you from the fact that you're just as cool as any other person, human or otherwise."

How could anyone not like Scout? She was feisty, fierce... Emily could learn a thing or two from her. Emily loved her! Scout had flamboyant energy, whereas Emily would happily thank the vending machine for dispensing a snack whenever she bought one.

However, the person she was frustrated with the most... Stood right over there by the edge of the site, picking at his nails and keeping to himself as usual.

Him again...

Emily's expression dampened albeit for a split second. Though knowing Scout, she'll have picked up on it pretty quickly.

"I disagree. It's a lot easier to close yourself off from the world than you might think." Scout decided to keep her own personal experience tucked away for now. Emily didn't really need to know about the person Scout used to be prior to attending Hogwarts. It took a lot of mental work on her behalf in order to not let the experiences she went through affect her now. In her eyes, it's a lot easier to not let anyone in rather than being vulnerable. Even now... vulnerability was hard.

There was little amounts of reassuring that Emily could do to truly settle Scout's nerves. If someone knew that Scout had some 'biting tendencies'- especially without Scout herself telling them... she was going to be wound up for the rest of summer camp until she finally talked to Zyair and cleared the air. But what if he didn't actually know, and then Scout spilled the beans to someone completely unaware?

She really didn't know how to go about the situation.

"You don't know that..." she trails, her hands going back to keep themselves busy at her hood. "Just 'cause you like non-humans doesn't mean everyone does. What if he blabs to like everyone in his school? Rumors can go fast." And rumors would be the last thing Scout needed to deal with. "I dunno, I'll figure something out later. Who's that?"

Scout's dark eyes had followed Emily's, and they landed on a tall boy standing semi far away from the two of them. It was easy to put the pieces together, from the way Em's face changed for a second, to fact that the boy literally fit the physical description Emily had given Scout- oh yeah, was this that total jerk of an Ilvermorny student?

"Oh my god, is that him?"

But Scout didn't wait for an answer (really, she didn't see much of a point in it), she strutted right up to him with a look on her face. It was a mixture of mild annoyance and indignation, lips pursed and hands held behind her back to hide the fists.

"Hey, you!" Scout didn't know his name- er, not that she really wanted to-, but she knew she already hated him. "Are you the total asshole that was mean to my friend?" Initially, she was pretty sure she would think about every thing before she said them but... she was actually starting to get annoyed with this guy. "My best friend, Emily Shephard? A.k.a., the smartest and kindest person I know? You're such a miserable loser!"

Maybe not the best idea to start dishing out insults as soon as your argument starts, but Scout was feeling more and more anger at the whole situation. Who in their right mind would be mean to Emily? Maybe this boy was sick or something and that was why he couldn't see that Emily was the kindest person in the world- yeah, that was probably it!

Casey's Speech: Bold #257379
Emily's Speech: #cfa120
Alone on top of the fence at the edge of the quidditch stadium sat Casey, minding his own business as he picked at the skin around his nails. All day he had been wondering why he was even at summer camp. Last time he checked, he never wanted to go. He was perfectly content spending the summer at home practicing his juggling shuffles and unicycle idles in the street. Though he was a real mother's boy at heart, going to camp because he trusted his mother so damn much; "A change of scenery will help work out all the bad stuff in your body," she told him. And Casey believed her. God damn her love.

His foot swung loosely below him, his heel hitting the barrier each time it went behind him. However the sudden rise in two distant voices distracted him from his solo time.

"Scout wait! Hang on- Just...!"

Casey groaned. Her. Again. And with her was another girl, marching towards him with a look of pure contempt. Casey was unfazed until a wave of insults tumbled out of her mouth, all directed at him. It was enough to make Casey hop off the fence and march with the same energy as her.

He got close to both of them. Though getting pissed at the girl she was with, his eyes were ultimately on Emily.

"You really can't just leave me the hell alone, can ya Little Miss No-Maj? And not only that, but you got yourself a bodyguard too. So what's your deal then? Standing up for a girl who likes to poke a hole in someone's business?"

If he hadn't have left his wand back in his tent, Casey would've casted a smokescreen charm in an instant if it meant getting away from this entire campground, let alone these two girls. What part of "leave me alone?" or "frick off" did people not get these days?

Well, at least he knew the girl's name. Emily. Casey smirked. "So then, Emily... I get that you're a sweet little cookie, but if you've got something to say, I wanna hear you say it. Don't let your underling speak for you."

The look of awkwardness and innocence was as plain as day on Emily's face. The face of a true pacifist. But the rising tensions between him and her accomplice were boiling over to dangerous proportions that Casey couldn't find it in himself to back down out of class. He stood off against the fearless lass, his hands at his hips while a small breeze sifted through a bang of his hair.

Emily shrunk into her neck, not at all anticipating something good from this.

This boy...! He was so... uncaring about the whole situation! It was making Scout's blood boil, that was for sure! And to call her a bodyguard when she was just a friend that- oh this boy definitely deserved to get hexed into oblivion! But Scout's hand remained far away from her wand- if she even began trying to hex him, there was no way she'd be able to stop herself.

There was something he said about Emily- called her a 'no-maj', what in the world did that even mean? It took Scout a minute to connect Emily's lack of magical heritage to the phrase 'maj', which was likely just slang for 'magic'. No magic? Jeez, the folks over at Ilvermorny really had to resort to a phrase like no-maj, instead of like... muggle, or something? But why in the world would he focus so hard on the lack of magic? Did they go back in time, was making fun of someone for being muggle-born back in fashion?

And the other thing he mentioned- poking holes in someone's business? That didn't sound like Emily at all. It was probably just a misunderstanding but that would actually make sense, especially considering that Scout already figured this boy to be the kind that wouldn't listen to anyone once he's made up his mind. It reminded Scout of herself in a way but she had grown up from that little girl!

"Are you so unfamiliar with the concept of 'friends' that you think anyone standing up for someone they care about is a bodyguard?" She spat back. "It wouldn't surprise me if you had nobody that cared about you. Poor thing, is that why you're all alone?"

Scout would not consider herself the kind of person to be cruel for no reason, but god... was being a hard-ass to her best friend not a good enough reason as is? "And if you really think that Emily is the kind of girl to 'poke holes in someone's business', maybe you should get your head out of your behind and actually realize that she's not that kind of girl!"

She was really starting to get worked up now, how can someone be so willingly offish? Did it not get lonely having no friends- and Scout knew someone like him would have no friends, with that horrible attitude, she wouldn't want to be friends with him either!

Ah great. Here we go again. Same shit different day was what Casey was thinking as Emily's accomplice rambled on. The power of friendship really did seem traditional at Hogwarts. Saccharine beyond belief. Casey was having none of it.

"I don't remember asking for friends, sweetheart," he said bluntly."If it bothers you so much then go find someone else. Someone who cares. I gave up caring about that crap."

The mention of Emily being one "not to poke around in someone's business" added fuel to Casey's fire however. Though way at the back of his head he knew she meant well. She was only asking if he knew the guy in his photo for crissakes - the answer obviously being "Yes... In fact he's my brother." But with his deteriorating mental health with the grief of Nick having gone missing, Casey was struggling to remain on common ground. He sneered at the girls as his insecurity grew.

"Perhaps you should tell your friend not to ask so many damn questions and let people have their private lives then!" His voice was louder than he was wanting it to be. Not that there was much rationality left after what was going on right now.

He locked eyes with Emily who now looked embarrassed after he called her out. It didn't take long before she looked away shyly. He probably did have a point, she thought. She always did have the sinking feeling she had a tendency to ask too many questions all at once. She couldn't really blame him for getting defensive over it. Even if she didn't really realise it before, she understood a little more now that she had been teetering on the edge of a touchy subject for him if it was winding him up this badly.

"I am sorry..."

Casey was struggling to balance appearances. On one hand he was still pissed off with Emily's relentless attitude for wanting to be friends, as well as her friend's rising temper towards him. On the other he knew it was well deserved for the equal attitude he was dishing up, all because Nick's disappearance devastated him.

Unfortunately it was his frustration that won in the end, which resulted in him pushing both girls back and turning on his heel, walking away in a huff.

"Frickin' broads. You're just as mad as everyone else...!"

"You don't get to just walk away! Flipendo!"

...

?

When had Scout grabbed her wand? She was sure just a moment ago that it lay perfectly still in her jacket pocket- she knew she couldn't grab it because she would definitely end up casting a spell or five. So... when had she grabbed it? When did she stupidly decide to escalate this from a shouting match to some full-on duel? No... this wasn't like her at all- well, okay, he kind of deserved it but... she should know better than to cast a spell when someone's back is turned. Shouldn't she?

Her lips fell open in an 'o' shape, as though she hadn't realized she was the one who cast the spell. What if she had casted something worst? There were unforgiveable curses, what if instead of knocking this boy down to the ground, she had seriously hurt him? Her father had told her to keep her emotions in check- because not thinking straight could lead to her doing something she couldn't go back from, or could lead her teeth into doing something she couldn't go back from. And she definitely didn't want that to happen, even if there was some stupid, mean boy.

Scout looks at Emily, eyes wide. "I- I didn't think- damnit!" she stutters out, trying to convey her thoughts to her friend. But she keeps her feet firmly planted on the ground, if Emily wanted to try to help the boy up, she could. Scout knew better than to try and approach the guy she had just jinxed, especially given the whole 'yelling at each other' thing. She'd leave helping out to her kind-hearted companion.

She felt compelled to shout out an apology to the Ilvermorny boy. It would be incredibly awkward considering you don't typically apologize to someone after knocking them back but like... Scout didn't even know she was going to jinx him until her wand was already in her hand so she could at least blame that! It was highly likely that the boy wouldn't even care about her intentions but that was whatever. Scout knew she didn't mean it, and she had even less of a problem admitting it out loud.

"I'm sorry!" She called, stuffing her wand back into her pocket where she had hoped it would remain. No more spell-casting for her! Ugh, she can't afford to let herself get so heated over something again. Maybe next time she could try taking deep breaths- if Emily ever found herself at the receiving end of someone's anger, Scout would try to calm herself before she started yelling.

"Hope you're not... sick... or bad, I guess." Okay, Scout was not going to hope Mr. Angry was 'good', but she would settle for 'not bad'. It was close enough, anyway.

Emily wouldn't think any less of the boy in front of her to push her back out of anger. She knew him well enough at this point to expect it, her feet grounded as she felt his grip against her shoulder. She let him walk off past her and Scout, clearly understanding that if she tried to say anything else he would blow up further. Some fights aren't worth it if they won't go anywhere.

That didn't to stop what happened next. In a blink of an eye, Emily saw a bright flash and Casey suddenly sailed forward ahead of himself, landing flat on the ground. Emily's head whipped around to see Scout with her wand out, pointed in his direction with a look of pure anger. Emily's face fell, the impact prompting her to gasp audibly and cover her eyes before being able to process what just happened. Scout? She did that? No, no... She was a firecracker without question, but Emily never would've expected Scout of all people to resort to something so... Violent.

The two met eyes. She could tell her buddy instantly regretted it, the Scout she knew all too well resurfacing from underneath the fading hatred. She didn't mean it. Though that didn't stop Emily from hurrying over to the Ilvermorny boy. No serious injuries thankfully, though had he'd been knocked back any harder he would've more than likely bonked his head against the fence. She could hear Scout calling out from behind her to see if he was okay, her bitter words of self-discipline laced with a clear apologetic tone. He looked physically fine but Emily was anticipating explosive rage any second now.

She was initially met with resistance when the boy retracted his aching body away from her when she offered a hand to him... But one look at her gentle and sad face stalled him enough to allow her to lift him up off the ground. He looked utterly defeated. Little patches of snow peppered his frame, dampening his clothes. The two shared a look, not quite one of common ground but one that definitely told each other that they needed to start understanding each other.

Emily looked back at Scout before standing between the two of them. When people say the silence is deafening, by God was it ever in that moment. Emily had exchanged upsetting glances between the pair of them.

"If either of you two have something to say, say it to me. Don't pick fights with each other. I'm the one that started this... So if anyone is to blame, it's me..."

All because I asked about a stupid photo...

She turned to Casey and looked him square in the eyes with her own watery ones.

"You can get mad with me all you want but you must realise that I mean no harm. I told you that earlier before. As for what happened with your rotten photo, I keep telling you that I'm sorry! If you really didn't want to answer my question then all you had to do was say so! But please don't come after my friends... Please don't. Be angry at me."

Another bout of silence overcame the pair. Casey sighed painfully. She had a point. They both knew it. He was getting worked up over nothing. The boy retreated and walked away, much more peacefully this time.

Emily brushed a quick tear from her eye before returning to Scout's side and taking her hand before they both walked off together. Emily wasn't mad. Just disappointed.

It was then that she understood what Scout said before. With a heavy sigh, she rubbed her forehead. She had a looooong way to go if she were to bring magical creatures and humanity together, especially when children were fighting like this. While the circumstances were a far cry from a dhampir's bite on a boy's arm for example, Emily couldn't fathom what would've happened if it did get to that level.

Her lips felt dry and seemed to crack. She wanted to go home and hide under her blankets until she graduated Hogwarts and could move to Zanzibar or somewhere far away from London, far away from the situation she had just got herself in. What kind of coward would she, the Scout Fu-Hai, be if she ran away from her own actions?

Though an all-too-familiar feeling of distress rang through her corpse-like skin, and Scout felt the want to run away to be much stronger than before. In school, she had always been the one on the receiving end of physical fights or emotional battles, and of course she knew she hadn't done anything wrong beyond existing but... now? She was the one casting some stupid spell and she had done something wrong, because she directly caused someone else to get hurt.

The dread was eating her up inside.

Although she's not the kind of person to run from the consequences of her actions, she will indefinitely prolong the consequence for as long as humanly possible. Dark brown eyes only locking with her snowy sneakers, point-blank refusing to even entertain the idea of looking at Emily. She could already feel oncoming words of chastise pouring out of her friend's mouth- the guilt was actually eating her inside.

Scout had learned one thing in her few years of attending muggle school, and that was 'there is nothing you can say to make the situation seem better for you'. If she got caught with gum in her hair, she'd be blamed even if it was another girl who had put it there. If someone had poured milk on her skirt at lunch, she'd be asked why she didn't try to move.

So, instead of trying to explain what had happened, she fell quiet. Uncharacteristic of her? Yeah, but she'd rather face backlash from just jinxing Meanie rather than jinxing and trying to 'pass the blame'. This whole situation sucked. Why did Mr. 'Pushing-girls' have to be such a jerk? Scout wouldn't have even thought of jinxing him if he just wasn't an asshole!

And poor Emily, too. She was still going to have to deal with some guy being a self-righteous asshole to her, and Scout could do nothing to help! She'd just have to keep her teeth (and wand) to herself from now on, ugh.

"Um..." she mumbled out, trying to find a way to properly word everything she wanted to say. "Is he- um- okay? My spells aren't that good so, I'm sure he was..."

Alleviating The Tension with @Scout Fu-Hai and Casey Stone
Speech: #cfa120
Thoughts: Italics
Oh boy. If tension was ever known to be thick in the air, it was simply suffocating at this moment. Of course no one was to blame for any of it. It was all a big kerfuffle over nothing if the three of them actually stood there for a second to think about it. Not that anyone was trying to actively deny it, but given the state of affairs it was difficult to be the bigger person and attempt to settle this whole thing down.

Casey gave the girls a look as he slunk off away from them, muttering something that Emily couldn't hear as she escorted Scout by the gentle touch of her hand to cool her off. Despite Scout unintentionally - though perhaps a little intentionally - sending Casey flying with a flipendo of her wand, Emily was struggling to be mad. She couldn't be angry with either of the two. They were both in the heat of the moment and it lead to where they were all now. As the one trying to appease the situation, Emily wasn't going to antagonise Scout nor Casey, regardless of how they now felt about each other. As she and Scout walked together, she couldn't help but feel the twitchiness of adrenaline in her friend's hand sink into the skin of her own fingers as she kept the pair of them walking. Emily was feeling nervous about everything that just went down but Scout felt to be in a much more troubled state.

Besides, Scout wasn't trying to be violent on purpose. If her face wasn't any indication of the guilt she was feeling, her tone in her question over Casey's state certainly would've compensated. Smiling weakly amidst the disappointment she felt over what just happened, Emily reassured her best buddy with a nod.

"He's okay... He didn't seem hurt. Just a bit shocked I think..."

They walked back to the tent Yet to be decided... where Emily finally let go of Scout's hand though not before giving her knuckle a soft stroke out of sweetness before giving Scout some space.

"Before you say anything... I'm not angry at you Scout... Actually, I ought to be thanking you for sticking up for me back there. That's something I like about you, you know? You're always tough and fearless, full of good intentions."

A small shaky laugh stuttered out of her mouth as her body tried to climb down from the high of the tension. "That's something I wish I had... Your courage. I'd say it's no mystery why you're in Gryffindor." She complimented. If Scout deserved anything, it was this.
