Bathing under the still glow of the moon was a ship, its figure standing tall amidst the darkened waters. It was rumoured that this vessel had once ruled over the oceans, a prince roaming the waters, wrapped in gold and glory — until one day, it mysteriously disappeared from Earth's surface, thought to be forever lost within the depths of the seas. Centuries after its last sighting, however, our guests find it — fragile and broken, yet ever more majestic — on the shores of Hogwarts' very lake.

Upon arriving, guests would leave the moonlit grass to step onto a wooden passerelle, hand trailing upon the splintered railing until they finally reach the main deck. Before their marveled eyes, the decor would take them centuries back, to a time where courageous sailors scattered the seas, searching high and low for gold and diamonds. To fend off the darkness of the night, a true light show had been deployed — floating candles scattered in the air, bluebell flames enraptured in glass jars were found at every corner of the ship, and each table hosted a rusted chandelier. Aided by this light, guests could distinguish the surrounding area — that of a true shipwrecked. Railings were broken, ringings and fishnets remained in corners. Paintings decorated some walls, some showing a gigantic kraken, others crashing waves with looming figures beneath, or others a bearded man, a scar crossing his right eye. An eerie silence surrounded the place, broken once in a while by an old record player humming forgotten tunes. Shattered pieces of the once glorious ship were found scattering the floor, and if one were to look closely, some details did not quite fit the scenery — rays of pearls hanging on the mats, some rolling on the floor; traces of struggles, nails scratching the floor; and a strange basket of perfectly preserved shells.

As they stepped onto the bâtiment, guests were welcomed by a strange-looking sailor. Though he was unmistakably a pirate — linen shirt, woolen jacket, knitted monmouth cap — yet some features were strange, like his glassy eyes, blue lips or the coral gripping his clothes. Brushing the strange shiver running down their spines, guests could accept the welcome card he was offering them, and take a seat. Each table was fit to welcome up to six persons, silver cutlery lined with vintage plates. Candles were burning at the center of each. The card was plain, though upon closer inspection, one would notice a message written in messy handwriting. It read —
"Aye, fine souls !
It is me greatest honor to welcome you aboard a vessel of bloody legend, once the deadliest batiment ever to prowl these enchanted depths, feared leagues upon leagues on black water, the brightest jewel of me treasure, the one and only Lost Pearl!
I, Captain Bartholomew Vane, once trod these very good ol' planks you lubbers are currently stomping on.
Feared by many, cursed by more, I ruled these uncharted seas with an iron hook, pillaging the weeping shores and sending fine vessels to their grave.
But even kings of the tides meet their doom, and now my proud lady lies abandoned, her treasure forever swallowed by the waves in some drowned palace no soul dares enter.
Avast, matey, for the sea hides more than she shows. Words often conceal others.
Fair wind!"
It strangely smelled of citrus, and some words seemed to fade.

Beyond that, there were tables of varying sizes, perfect for anything from a candle lit dinner for two or a boisterous group of six. There would be three courses, appetizer, entree, and dessert, including things like oysters and caviar, a savoury assortment of fishes and seashells, edible pearls topping blueberry muffins.

Visible from their seats was another entry, leading to what seemed to be the middle of the lake. Chants, music and laughter rose from over there, and guests might feel a strange pull towards this area, as if something was calling to them.

fall ball 2025; open to interactions
If there was anything her parents ever taught her, it's that going out there and seeing the event is better than not going at all and making no connections. After all, there would come a time when it would be who you knew and not what you can do that mattered.

So, despite having no formal group to go with, Vera went to the Fall Ball.

She had asked her parents to owl (that term was still very strange to say rather than mail, or post, or courier) her any one of her dresses, though it probably would've been best to specify the theme to them. A bright pink butterfly dress was certainly a statement, and not quite on theme unless Vera argued the sleeves could mimic water. Nevertheless, it was comfortable and did the job.

The venue was definitely a surprise, in a good way. She expected it to be in the ballroom, as most formal events would normally be held in such a space, but this was a nice change. The pirate greeting them had certainly surprised her, but she took the card in their hand anyway and headed to an empty table. Vera hummed as she took in the decorations and tableware. Well, safe to say Hogwarts certainly had a good budget for events.

The day had finally arrived, the day of the autumn ball. After nervously getting ready, Leo was, somewhat, ready to go meet with his date and head to the ball together. He had no idea what the night would bring but he was definitely excited. The whole school seemed to be buzzing with excitement all week as the day grew closer, international students even arrived to attend so hopefully it lives up to the hype. He was still nervous about the dancing part but he had heard there would be a fun escape room type event so he definitely wanted to check that out if Rosaline wanted to as well.

Leo walked down the corridor to where the entrance to the Gryffindor common room was, leaning his back against the wall as he waited for Rosa to come out. His stomach was full of butterflies again as he stood there. Looking down at his outfit, he made sure the white dress shirt was tucked in before he began fidgeting with the sleeves. He had checked the mirror before leaving his dorm so he knew everything was in place and looked fine but he couldn’t help but feel nervous now that he was standing there. Turning to look in the slight reflection of a metal knight that stood in the hall, he checked to make sure his hair still looked how he wanted it to as well. It was too late to run back now and fix anything anyway.

He brushed off the coat to make sure there was nothing on it and checked over his shoes again when he saw Rosaline walk out to meet him. She always looked effortlessly pretty but now seeing her all dressed up he was left practically speechless. “Wow, you look amazing.” He said quietly as he felt his cheeks heat up but didn’t bother trying to control any changes since he was focused on the Gryffindor girl in front of him that was his date to the ball. With his eyes changing to a soft pink to match the blush on his cheeks, he gestured down the corridor. “Ready to go then?” He asked and offered his arm for her to take, something he had seen in some movies that his sister and cousin would watch during the holiday vacations the family would take all together.

Leo couldn’t help but smile as the pair walked together out to the Great Lake where the ball would be taking place. Students were gathered in pairs, groups, even some on their own as they walked up to the tall ship that was resting on the waters of the lake. It certainly gave off a spookier vibe befitting the theme of the night for sure. As they walked up the gangplank and inside Leo was amazed by the decorations that adorned the inside of the ship. Floating candles, jars with blue flames, lots of maritime paintings. It was truly a sight to see for the young first year who had never been on a ship before, which added to the nervous feeling for the night. After the initial shock wore off, Leo looked over at Rosaline and smiled as he spoke. “Where do you want to sit?” He asked her, looking around at the tables as people began to file in and start sitting down.

The girl had left the Hufflepuff common room with a group of people, all ready for the ball, but they all left to find their mates. She had agreed to meet up with her friend, Frederick Buckley and his mate, Marcus Contarini Crawford, whom she'd been pointed out to in the hallways, and a Ravenclaw girl who she vaguely knew as Ally Craig.

She would have worn the red dress her mother sent her, but decided against it, donning a white sailor's dress her uncle from abroad sent her instead. Her hair was down, soft and smelling of her favorite conditioner. She wore some lip gloss, but that was it; she didn't wear makeup or get some crazy getup or a date, because she was only 11. Right now, she was in the exact situation ideal: a normal dress and a friend group for a night to remember.

She stopped on the moonlit grass, and looked around. There were students in an array of clothing. Some were interesting, and some, well, Maisie had to bite her lip from doubling over and laughing like a maniac. She had to wait for the others, so she had time to observe the lovely shipwreck and the beautiful decorations.

A familiar person appeared in her view with another person, definitely Marcus, she thought, and she waved her arms to get their attention. She didn't particularly think they would rnotice her at once, as it was quite dark. Surprisingly, while it did get their attention, she hoped she wouldn't be considered crazy for jumping up and down. Oh well, who cared? They walked over, and she grinned at them. "Hi, Fred! Hi, you must be Marcus? Did you see all the work they did? This event is huge!" She did her best to slow down and talk with a few breaths in between, which she sometimes didn't, especially when she was excited or happy. And that was most of the time.

Another figure approached, none other than Ally. She waited while the girl walked towards the small group, before she spoke again.
"I bet this would be a wonderful time, don't you think? It's so cool and shipwreck-y like!" She was in awe of the place and all the work the ball comitee did to make the place as realistic as possible. They must have worked day and night. Where they got such a shipwreck, she couldn't fathom. Perhaps it was some old or tricky magic that could conjour things up. She adjusted her collar and swept hair out of her face.

They made their way across the lawn and up the ship. It was a bit spooky, in her opinion. There wasn't just a huge chandelier lighting the whole place up, no- it was an amount of lights of all sizes and shapes.

She'd been lucky enough to be on a real shipwreck on the Irish coast a few years ago, and she could never forget how broken it was. This boat looked the part, with broken nets and upset barrels. The paintings were what drew her attention. She also noticed some signs of struggle on the wooden floorboards. She shuddered. This would either be a night to remember of a night of her worst nightmares.

"Um- what do you guys think of this place?" The girl wondered if they'd seen the scratches on the floor, or get goosebumps, as she did.

The light October breeze blew gently across the grounds as Avery made her way to the Great Lake where the Fall Ball was held. She could see the outline of a ship in the distance. Bathed in silver moonlight and standing ominously before her. She had heard that the ball was about the depths of the sea this time, but she couldn't quite fathom how far that theme would go until it stood before her in all its glory.

Avery had just come upon the ship. Only then realizing how vast the ship really was. It towered above her. Making her feel like a small ant in a field of grain. Avery took one precarious step onto the wooden gateway. Taking in the creaking and gently sway of the ship as it sat upon the water.

Avery could hear gently music coming from the dancing area a little ways off, but she wasn't quite ready to dance. For now, she would stay in the dining area. Awaiting her date, Mikey, to come. They had agreed upon meeting at the entrance or at least around the general area of it that night, so they could find each other easily.

Honestly? Avery couldn't be happier to be at the ball that night. Normally she couldn't stand dressing up or going to fancy events. They made her feel like she had to be someone she wasn't. But at Hogwarts balls? Well, she could still be herself and have a good time. Even if it meant she had to dress up. She also got to attend it with her boyfriend, so what could make it better when it was already perfect enough.

Avery laid her arms over the railing of the walkway. Hands clasped together as she awaited her date. The cool autumn breeze gently flowing her skirt. There was a slight chill to the air, but Avery didn't even notice. Her excitement the one thing keeping her warm. She couldn't wait to see what the night would bring. All she had to do was wait and see.

Fred had spent the last ten minutes in front of the mirror, trying to get his hair to look just right. He’d pushed it back, then ruffled it again, until it settled in that perfectly imperfect way, loose waves that framed his face and refused to behave, but somehow looked like they were meant to. Satisfied, he gave his reflection a small grin. Maybe he didn’t look like a pirate captain, but he could definitely pass for one of the crew. He’d put together his outfit from what he had: a cream-colored shirt with a few buttons undone, a dark brown jacket that looked just the right amount of worn, and his widest pair of trousers, tucked into scuffed boots. He’d even tied a bit of string around his wrist, pretending it was a sailor’s bracelet. Looking in the mirror one last time, he nodded. Not bad.

The night air bit pleasantly at his face as he and Marcus crossed the moonlit grass. “Do you think they actually brought a real ship here?” he asked, squinting toward the lake. The silhouette of the vessel gleamed silver under the moon, eerie and beautiful at once. “Blimey, that’s brilliant.”

When Maisie’s excited waving caught his eye, Fred broke into a grin and waved both arms back, nearly smacking Marcus in the shoulder. “Oi! There she is!” He jogged the last few steps, his boots slipping a bit on the damp grass. “You look great, Maisie!” he said, genuine awe in his tone before glancing at Marcus. “And this is him, the infamous roommate. Don’t let his face fool you; he’s actually alright.” Always a little joke with him. He laughed, glancing around as Ally approached, offering her a cheerful, “Hey, Ally!

As they stepped onto the wooden passerelle, the ship creaked beneath their feet. Fred trailed a hand along the rough railing, fingertips catching on splinters. The glow of bluebell flames flickered across their faces, throwing strange shadows. He couldn’t decide whether he was fascinated or unnerved. “It feels… real,” he murmured, eyes darting to the paintings: the kraken, the waves, the bearded man with the scar. His stomach twisted with a mix of excitement and wonder.

He leaned over the railing, glancing toward the lake’s dark expanse where the water shimmered under the moon. Just before stepping onto the deck, a familiar face caught his attention: Avery, the girl he’d played a not-so-official Quidditch match with a few days earlier. Fred’s grin widened, and he gave her a quick wave, a small flick of his wrist that she might or might not have noticed. No time to stop and chat, though; the others were already moving ahead.

At the top of the passerelle stood a strange-looking sailor offering cards to each guest. The man’s glassy eyes gleamed oddly in the candlelight, his lips an uncanny shade of blue, coral clinging to the fabric of his coat. Fred blinked, half convinced it was an illusion charm, or maybe something else entirely. Still, curiosity outweighed hesitation. He took one of the welcome cards, murmuring a polite “Thanks,” before slipping it into the inside pocket of his jacket. Whatever was written there could wait. For now, the thrill of stepping onto the Lost Pearl was more than enough.

Maisie’s question hung in the air. Fred looked down at the faint scratches on the floor, then up at her, his blue eyes catching the soft shimmer of candlelight. “I think it’s brilliant,” he said, a grin spreading across his face. “They really made it look like a real shipwreck, didn’t they? The lights, the smell of salt, even the creaks, it’s perfect.” His voice carried that unmistakable spark of excitement he got whenever something felt like an adventure waiting to happen.

Ada didn't really know what to expect. She had never been to a ball or formal event fore that matter. She had heard from her mother and father that Hogwarts goes all out with things like these but she never really knew what they meant until she saw the ship.

It was magnificent. The ship rose majestically from the waters like something strait from a fairy tail. Once Ada was onboard, she nearly jumped out of the white flowery dress she was wearing at the sudden greeting given by an odd looking sailor with a glassy eye and blue lips.

The sailor gave her a welcome card that appeared blank at first but on closer inspection, she noticed a note scrawled in small messy handwriting.

The early night air was chilly and a cool breeze ruffled the sleeves of Ada's shirt. It was a plan white shirt with long flowing sleeves wrapped with embroidered flowers. Her skirt was much the same except black, flowers lacing the hems and crawling up the fabric.

The deck of the ship was even more breathtaking than the entrance. There were candle lit tables, draped in white table cloths, set for six. Some people were already there but Ada assumed there would be many more to come. She couldn't see much from the deck but the moon shone brightly in the sky. She sat down at one of the tables overlooking the deep dark waters of the grate lake.

For a long moment, Percival stood at the edge of the pier, staring up at the ship. He had seen the posters about the Fall Ball ever since he arrived at Hogwarts, but somehow, being here in front of the actual venue made it feel very different. The air carried the faint scent of salt and wood from the ship, and there was a beautiful glow of floating candles over the water to mesmerize him.

He then adjusted the collar of his jacket, which his mother had made for him, and tried to brush off a few creases that weren't there. It felt strange wearing something so formal when most days he barely managed to keep his school robes straight. Still, she had insisted, and he didn’t have the heart to tell her he wasn’t sure he’d even have anyone to talk to.

He really needed to make more friends.

Percival then stepped onto the ship and followed the music and laughter he heard up ahead. The decorations were incredible. The broken railings, the tattered ropes, and scattered pearls... it almost made it feel like stepping into one of his books. He was careful not to trip as he crossed one of the uneven planks and offered a smile when the ghostly sailor handed him a card. The words written across it were difficult to read, and he squinted under the candlelight to make sense of it before tucking it away.

After making his way to where the others were, he looked around and finally spotted his first familiar face. @Verity Engels was sitting at one of the nearby tables in a bright pink dress that likely drew everybody's attention in a heartbeat. It made him smile, but he still felt a bit nervous about the idea of approaching her, even if he didn't recognize anybody else.

So, after taking a breath and taking a firm grip on the sleeves of his jacket, he scurried off to the side and decided to just look around for a while. People-watching could be fun, too, and just maybe he'd muster the courage to approach someone familiar soon enough.

The ship did not seem like it would pass any kind of safety inspections, but having spent some time in the magic world Mylo knew that looks could be deceiving. However that did not mean that every second thought they would have wasn't 'are we sinking??', leaving him in a state of slightly heightened awareness at all times.

He was glad however that they weren't there alone, as both Avis and Maisie were there with him, although both of them had had no intention of him leaving the common room in a 'boring suit'. Meaning that Mylo needed a change of wardrobe and found themselves wearing an outfit that was surprisingly comfortable, as they had come dressed as a pirate, wearing a white shirt with a blue one over it. Accompanied with a few necklaces, a belt, some pirate shoes and of course a pirate hat.

The ship itself, although probably a HSE nightmare, was gorgeously decorated and Mylo found themselves enamoured by the entire vibe of the place. And walking onto the boat was no different, lights illuminated the place, it even felt kind of haunted which wasn't strange as it probably was pulled from the depths of the lake.

Walking through the atmospheric location Mylo spotted a sailor handing out welcome cards, grabbing one he thanked the guy and turned to his friends.

"It's an interesting place for sure this, should we go and find a place to sit?" He asked, looking around and seeing tables scattered around the ship.

The Lost Pearl 2025 Fall Ball
Aisling's Dress: Something like this.
Aisling's Hair: Something like this.

Aisling walked a long way from her dorm. After finishing one of her classes for the day, she had to prepare for the Autumn Ball. She was worried she'd run late, but it looked like the event, at least on this side of the Great Lake, had just started. She wore a purple and light blue dress that was floor-legth, with multiple ruffles. Some of the ruffles were adorned with white, silk flowers. It matched the theme alright, considering this dress made her feel like she was a mermaid coming to land. After all, the dance was on a ship. Her ginger hair was done into long curls that fell halfway down her torso, with a fishtail braid in the back. A bit matchy-matchy, but Aisling's always been one to enjoy a theme. Then again, she was never invited to parties before. And this wasn't a party per se, but she was invited, even if it was a school event. She had a feeling that if she had been invited to parties before she arrived at Hogwarts, she probably would've always followed their theme to a T. Then again, with her social anxiety being as it was before Hogwarts, she was usually relieved of having to interact. And maybe it was just Hogwarts and its inherent magic, but here...here her anxiety seemed to dissipate.

To her surprise, there were a lot of First Years here. Aisling was almost sure that there would be Thirds Years and up here, but no. Most of them were her age. In fact, her eyes landed on a familiar face. A grin spread across her face. "Percival?" she asked. She quickly walked over to him, the short heels of her silver slippers tapping against the wood below her. "Percival, is ... is that you?" As Aisling got closer, she was certain it was him. Her smile widened. "Hi!" Her eyes landed on his suit. Much like how the green of Slytherin's robes suited him, so did the suit he was wearing now. "You," she said, her grin plastered onto her fair face, "you look incredibly dapper!"
