Relief flooded her. Then it quickly turned into annoyance. How could Rosie believe in her siblings and think of her as a murderer? And why? Surely, she had been the worst friend any person could ever expect to have... or else, why would Rosie doubt her conscience?

YOU'RE THE WORST FRIEND A PERSON CAN EVER EXPECT TO HAVE! YOU DON'T DESERVE HER FORGIVENESS! HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU DISAPPOINTED THAT POOR GIRL WHO JUST WANTED TO LIVE A NORMAL LIFE? HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU PULLED HER INTO THIS? HOW MANY TIMES DID SHE HAVE TO APOLOGISE WHEN IT'S NOT ACTUALLY HER FAULT, BUT YOURS! YOU SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN BORN! YOU DESERVE TO DIE!

The voices had flooded her mind again, and Lauren couldn't help but agree. She still hated herself more than anything in that moment -- perhaps with the exception of her siblings. They had polluted her friend's mind, tricked her into believing that she, Lauren, was a murderer. Maybe she actually was, and she just didn't realise it. Why did she have to be born? Why did this misfortune -- her birth -- have to fall on this world? Was she just born into this world to receive such torture?

Most likely, yes. Everyone was going to hate her, to wish for her suffering more than ever. But why? Probably because everyone believed that she was born a monster, and deserved to be treated like one. But if she was born a monster, why did she even have to be born?

Then the memories came back again. How her parents had treated her like she was gold when she was young, around the age of four or five. How they had adored her, preferred her over her siblings, and praised her whenever they could. How they admired everything they did, believed that she was the heiress to the Vanes Family of Light and Knowledge. How they loved her and supported her thirst for knowledge. How they provided her with whatever books she wanted.

Did that mean that she wasn't born a monster? A splinter of hope could be visible beneath the towering trees, but it disappeared quickly. Lauren shook her head. No. Her parents, her siblings -- they had just been too blind to realise it. She bit her lip. Even her aunt, Loratrix had realised that she, Lauren, was in the wrong for existing and that her aunt had been in the wrong for offering her confidence and encouragement. Even she believed that she was in the wrong and is rightfully treated by her family. Maybe she was right. Maybe she shouldn't have caused such a scene in the owlery two weeks ago.

Her aunt probably already hated her. And Lauren fully accepted it --

BUT HOW CAN YOU FORGIVE HOW SHE TRIED TO ORDER YOU TO APOLOGISE! YOU SHOULDN'T LISTEN TO PEOPLE'S INSTRUCTIONS JUST LIKE THAT! DON'T YOU REMEMBER THE REBELLION YOU PROMISED YOURSELF TO UPHOLD? WHERE IS IT NOW? AND REALLY, SHE'S STILL OUT OF HER MIND! REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED -- SHE WAS MANIPULATED BY THE MEMBERS OF THE VANES FAMILY! SHE WASN'T THINKING CLEARLY! SHE DIDN'T EVEN HAVE A BRAIN IN THAT MOMENT! WHY ARE YOU REJECTING YOUR OWN STANDARDS RIGHT NOW, ALL IN THE NAME OF OBEYING YOUR AUNT! LAUREN LORATRIX VANES, YOU ARE YOUR OWN PERSON!

Right. She cursed herself for her initial assumption that she was supposed to apologise to her family. That, she would never do. Then she slapped herself as she remembered how her siblings were in the wrong in the first place -- for their manipulation of Rosie. Guilt washed over her. Rosalyn Willows most certainly didn't deserve being manipulated by her siblings. This might as well be all her fault.

NO -- IT'S ROSIE'S! Another voice boomed in her mind. IT'S HER FAULT FOR BELIEVING FELIX AND ARIANNA'S WORDS! SHE SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE SO, BECAUSE A TRUE FRIEND WOULD NEVER STOP BELIEVING THAT YOU ARE PURE, ESPECIALLY NOT FROM THE MOUTH OF PEOPLE YOU HAVE STATED THAT YOU SO DESPISED! SHE'S NOT BEING TRUE! SHE MIGHT JUST BE SAYING THIS TO TRICK YOU! THIS IS NONE OF YOUR FAULT! YOU'RE NOT BEING A BAD FRIEND! SHE IS! SHE'S BEING THE WORST PERSON ANYONE CAN BE, EVEN STUPID AUNT LORATRIX COULD SEE THAT! BUT I GUESS YOU'RE EVEN MORE STUPID THAN SHE IS!

That had opened her mouth, and the young Slytherin began to speak.

"Why did you even believe them in the first place? Are you thinking that I'm a murderer? Say the truth, and don't think that I can't see through what you're thinking! I know you hate me, do you think I don't know that? I might be stupid, but not as stupid as you are! Believing in them!" Her eyes began to blaze in fury, her initial hatred towards herself forgotten. It was all directed at Rosie now.

"You say that you'll never doubt me! But you just did! You just decided that I was a murderer, didn't you! You just decided that their words are worth more than mine! You don't even care about me!" Then she decided that Rosie shouldn't have, but she was too angry to care. She hated herself for her constant changes in emotion, but that was something she could think about later.

"At first, you said that you genuinely couldn't remember! How genuine was THAT, huh? Not at all! You do remember, you just thought that I'd be mad! And now I am, and I hate you! Now you're saying that my siblings altered your memories? What's that, why would they? And why were you so stupid as to tell them that you're my friend? Now I'll prove to them that you're not!" She stalked off, casting a sideway glare at Rosie, and ventured deeper into the Forbidden Forest.

Her heart almost stopped beating when she saw what laid in front of her. Acromantulas glared at her with bared fangs, blocking her path. She looked behind her for Rosie, then remembered that her friend was unlikely to help her, considering her attitude towards her a few moments ago, though she didn't turn back. She was tired of apologising again and being the one who messed everything up. She still believed that Rosie needed to know that she wasn't someone who could be betrayed that easily. She didn't like the idea of the muggle-born taking advantage.

I can tackle this on my own. She took out her wand from her robe, mustered her bravery, and shouted, "FLIPENDO!"

She hoped that it was enough for the acromantulas to take the hint and back off. Sadly, the young Slytherin felt as though the battle wouldn't be won so quickly.

Ha! The day surely belonged to Harvey as he really stuck it to this giant of a first year. Not that he was much of a bootlicker and Headmaster Lear always seemed a bit out of the reach to the boy even if he wanted curry favor. He listened with smug satisfaction as Solomon chastised the part-giant. It would have completed the diss just to cooly walk away, but Hogwarts was not like other schools. No, this center of learning had a way of drawing trouble that must put it on the list as one of the most dangerous places in the whole damned wizarding world!

The scene around the quickly exploded into pure chaos. There is no Hogwarts event without fire. Who the hell decided it was a good idea to teach eleven years old how to magically produce fire?! Smoke would begin to fill the air and terror would follow. Angry insects spilled forth from the debris and bang to attack children. Monster came trampling out next and students resorted to ripping snakes in half with their bare hands! Harvey's first instinct was to run. The boy had proven himself no coward, but trusting your flight or fight response was essential to survival. When the world erupts around you, leave, but a crashing behind him had him spin on the spot.

Harvey's wand was at the ready. At least Hogwarts had taught him that much. He looked around for the Headmaster, but he was suddenly no where to be found. Had Solomon abandoned them? No time for questions now as the giant first year stood before him. Harvey almost had to look straight up to meet the other boy's gaze and it was clear that he meant to harm. The spit on the ground was enough for the part-goblin to start blasting, but when the giant made a grab for him there was no hesitation. "Take an English lesson you big, smelly bastard! FLIPENDO!"

In retrospect, Erast should have known better. He should have known better than to lose his bearings and throw himself into a task amidst this surge of conflicting, confusing bitterness, because it made him do stupid things– like tearing apart a potentially intentional, dangerous stone structure.

Aged, moss-covered stone shifted stiffly beneath the shears, and as a hole formed, a shear blade hit something underneath. TING! Rusted metal hit something with resonance. Something like glass. Erast frowned. Why would a material like glass be in there?

Against better judgement, gloved hands and shear blades pried open the top layer of the cairn, revealing several vials of what appeared to be mud-encrusted goals resting in the centre. The glass was fogged with grime, almost impossible to peek into the contents within if any. Unease stirred in his chest. Had a member of staff been conducting an experiment, or brewing a complex potion? For such an intentional protective structure to be built around these vials, hidden behind yards of overgrown vines and gnarled branches… Someone had to have planted these here with intent, and it certainly wasn't their place to uncover it.

Erast stood. Something wasn't right. “Noxley–” He turned around, just in time to witness a well-cast scourgify whisk away the grime and mud from the cairn and the bottles within. A mysterious dark mist danced within the vials’ confines. For a split second, nothing was wrong. Then, as soon as light hit the glass, the opaque mist writhed, as if in pain. In a blink, the smoke dissipated into nothingness in the sealed goals. Well, that wasn't good.

“Look what good thing you did, Mr Hard Worker,” Erast scoffed, smacking Leo on the arm. He covered his mouth and nose with his sleeve, afraid that the spell had somehow punctured holes in the flask and that dark smoke had seeped out into the air as poison.

Then, screams. Panic. He lifted his head, only to be met with utter chaos. A raging fire had swept the forest and set the trees ablaze, with students in the distance being swallowed under blankets of fire. Students were collapsed under attacks of unknown and arachnid causes, and when he turned, the blurry, yet vivid sight of the largest spiders he had ever seen greeted him from afar with his peers collapsing underfoot.

“我靠–” Erast hissed. He slammed the rock he had removed back onto the cairn, snatching out his wand from his inner pocket and gripping it at the ready. He nudged Leo and himself back to back, putting a distance between them and the cairn. “You, me– Out, now. The brunet muttered, eyes fixed on the horrific creatures and the absolute bedlam just kilometers away. Before Erast could stop himself, impulse added, “I love our lovely bond, but we should continue bonding alive, right? We're not close enough to die together yet, Noxley.” Adrenaline burned in his blood. Shame and social consequences came secondary to dying at a stupid weekend detention with a shameless guy.

@Lauren Vanes
Note, Rosalyn does not fully leave the forest yet!
Rosie was waiting with bated breath, as she saw the gears turning in Lauren's head, only able to imagine all of what she was thinking in the moment. Rosie herself felt many different things…

Fear was probably the most prominent emotion at the time. She was stuck in the Forbidden Forest, where it was dark and scary and there were who knows all the sorts of monsters all around. She was absolutely terrified, but not willing to leave Lauren all alone out there.

She was also in a bit of pain, between the various small cuts and such from walking through the Forest filled with rocks and thorns and the headache plaguing her skull from the sudden influx of memories from earlier that day. The fact that her mind had been tampered with frightened her way more than she would have liked to admit, because it was too easy for Lauren's siblings to go in and change her thoughts of one of her closest friends.

Another emotion present in her heart was guilt. She felt so guilty for believing, even for a moment, that Lauren would hurt her, have it in her to cause Rosie pain. Lauren didn't deserve that, she was already dealing with so much with her horrible family and all of her stress at school, that Rosie shouldn't have been the person to add to those feelings.

But, of course, she was. She couldn't see past the lies told by the poor girl's siblings, she couldn't think for herself, she instead was susceptible to the erasure of her memory. Rosalyn Willows, friendly and bubbly as she was, believed that her own friend would end her life, and all she could feel was the shame of that. And all she could do was hope that Lauren would accept the apology, and they could safely leave together.

But, in a turn of events that Rosie had not expected at all, Lauren did the exact opposite.

The girl's words echoed in her ears, almost instantly bringing the relatively fragile eleven-year-old to tears. She was only able to bite them back because she needed to look at Lauren's face, to see if she really meant what she was saying.

And, if her face wasn't lying, she meant every single word.

"Lauren, please sto…" she began to say, feeling stupid as Lauren had called her, unable to find the words to say. But, clearly, the other girl had none of the same problems, and kept going with her vile words.

She listened as she was accused of lying, hating Lauren, being stupid, doubting her, and not caring about her friend.

"It was genuine! I promise, something is wrong! I wouldn't lie to you, I promise!" she said, hating the desperation in her own voice but unable to sound like anything but the terrified child that she was, losing her close friend as she stood there, unable to stop the chasm forming between the two of their hearts.

Then, she heard the words. The three words that could bring Rosie, the people-pleaser, desperate to be loved, unable to tolerate rejection in any form, to her knees. Well, not literally, because the floor of the Forest was outrageously dirty.

"I hate you."

"What?"

The single word, barely muttered past the immediate block of emotion forming in her throat, was hardly able to be heard in the jungle they were walking through, though Rosie had long since stopped in her tracks.

Her entire life, she had been terrified of this very moment. Of making a friend, and losing them to a hatred she could not fix. She had been friends with so very many people throughout her eleven years, and never once had any friendship ended on bad terms. Even at Hogwarts, the magical school, where pressure was immense and the emotions of tweens and teens were unpredictable, she'd gained many friends and, thus far, lost none. Though that was changing, right in this very moment, before her eyes.

In the shock that followed those three vile words, the kindest parts of Rosie hid within her, unable to tolerate the fact that, for the first time, she was hated. Not disliked, not even just forgotten, but hated. Horribly, fully, and overwhelmingly hated. By a person that she would have, and literally nearly did by traveling into this godsforsaken forest, given herself for.

But, with the best parts of her buried within her heart, watching as the part of it that was so secure in her friendships crumbled, all that was left were the parts with nothing but the bitterest, meanest, most internal thoughts remained. And with her filter gone, those parts were the ones showing through.

"You know what, Lauren Loratrix Vanes? I hate you too. Not only too, but I hate you MORE!" she said, her voice beginning to rise as she lost control over what came from her mouth.

"Out of every friend I have had, you are by far the most pathetic. You can't even stand up to your family, instead resorting to dragging people like myself into danger just to prove that you aren't the snivelling, worthless failure of a daughter that they believe you to be. That, by getting close to you, I know you to be." she said, and she just took a breath, still going.

"Would you like more of what exactly I think, if you want me to 'tell the truth', to be 'genuine'? Well, here you go. You are a little girl playing at being big. You think that hurting yourself makes you seem brave, and that maybe it'll make up for what you really know deep down. That all you will ever be is a scared child, begging for even a scrap of affection from people who don't care about you. And they're right not to!" Rosie added, still feeling no regret for her words.

"You want to know something? Think of every time that you have ever complained to me, vented to me, hurt yourself and needed my help, hurt or risked me, or gotten me into danger! Think of every time you've done that." she continued.

"Now, think of every time that I have done the same to you. NEVER!!! I am not a therapist, yet that is what you have treated me like! I have feelings too! And problems! And things I want to talk about, but nOoOo! This is Lauren's world, all about Lauren's emotions and how hurt Lauren is and how much poor, poor Lauren has been through because of her family." Rosie said, with a bit of a mocking voice at the end.

"You know what? I think your family was right. You have no potential, you are a horrible person, and I do hope that someday, you finally accept that! Because then, maybe you will be able to put your horrible ego aside, and get help from someone who ISN'T AN ELEVEN YEAR OLD GIRL! I didn't sign up for this! The first time we met was when I got attacked by a Howler, hurt because of YOU! Yet I stayed." she said, quieting down a bit at the very end.

"I stayed. Not your siblings, who really did alter my memory, and not your parents. Not any of them, but me. And I'm done." she said, finally finishing with her own rant, feeling the weight of every single pent-up thought just leave her chest.

She then stood there, and just watched as Lauren went deeper into the Forest, going towards what seemed to be gigantic spiders.

Good, she thought. Maybe she'll be out of your hair now.

Speaking of hair, Rosalyn's prized curls were wild. Caked in mud, frizzed from the night air, and tangled from the chasing after someone who didn't deserve her. She had finally realized that what Lauren had said so many times before, that she was undeserving of Rosie, was true. And she was done with putting herself in danger to be with someone, if all that someone thought of her was that she was a stupid, pathetic liar.

Rosalyn turned on her heels, and began the long trek back to the rest of the group going through the detention. She abandoned who she had once believed to be her friend to whatever was in the forest.

And she didn't look back once.

The fire seemed to be more vicious than it already had to be. Affected others and ultimately herself included, soon. She was compelled to take her wand and take out the fires. Getting the place to burn down in ashes was not her plan for the summer at all.

“Extinguo.” she said as she pointed with her wand

Risks are needed and she had to get in a crossfire. Fire spread like wildfire. Burnt her in some places, but she was keeping her composure, although it was beginning to feel a bit irritating. As someone who is a Dhampir, Angel did not feel at all like the odds were not in her favour. She only rolled her eyes.

“Truly, I think this day could become a bloodmist if it wanted to.” she said bluntly

Oh right, blood. Recalling the smell of blood from earlier it was time she broke the news to her fellow companions. Charlotte and Cecilia. They could find this information useful. Who knows when more dangers or inconveniences will come in a good predicament. Speaking of which she was in one herself. All Angel could feel was being unbothered. But one thing can not be overstated, she was beginning to ponder on how to explain her revelation to her unit.

xxxThey were spotted. Skylar was successfully, or at least thought she was, bringing Mika to a quieter place. Unfortunately, Headmaster Lear somehow still spotted them despite his questionable existence in a chair. But before Skylar could try to defend herself or Mika, something else pulls her attention away entirely.

The forest was on fire.

Skylar stares at the burning forest, her mouth agape. What type of idiot would set the forest on fire? However, the girl had to quickly overcome her shock. The fire was spreading fast and they happened to be near the tree line. She quickly analyzes her friend's situation, but finds that no matter what state Mika is in right now, they still had to run.

The day's events are getting to her, and all she did was try to prevent Mika from having a panic attack. The fire roars around her and shouting from various students can be heard all around her. Her heartbeat was picking up and she could feel the blood rush to her head. The incessant need to do something was biting at her, her hum of adrenaline in her veins. A human's flight or fight response, as her dad had told her, kicks in when they are in danger. And she was in danger.

"I-I'm sorry. Again. For this and... Everything." Mika manages to mumble out, tears still filling her eyes and her hands were shaking. If she had a clearer head, Skylar probably would have said something calming. Something reassuring. Something that can quell the anxiety rising within her friend and lead her to safety.

But Skylar had neither a clear head nor a calming presence. She does not know what is happening with Mikaela. She does not know much. But her patience has reached its breaking point and her usual cheeriness just died somewhere along the way.

"For all your Saints and ancestors, Mikaela Hendricks, shut up and RUN!" Skylar yells, grabbing Mikaela by the hand hard and taking off. Her head pounds as she tries to navigate through the thickening smoke, the cries and chaos of students filling her head.

"I don't care if you have some midnight adventure, I don't care if you have some alter ego, what I care about is getting out of here alive. Get yourself together, Hendricks. You are my sister from another blood and I'll be damned if you got hurt."

With a sharp yank, the Gryffindor dodges an upturned rock and continues forward. "Do you really think what we have is going to end because you hid a secret from me? Yes, I am mad, but I value our lives more than some argument. So get yourself together and focus, goddamnit. We can confess our sins and cry together later. I do not have time to play therapist right now, you hear me?" Skylar states harshly as she drags Mikaela along, her steps fast and breaths hard as she pushes forward. The fire was spreading and the whole place was aflame. A few students were getting swarmed by bugs, and a few were stuck under fallen branches. She runs to the direction of Headmaster Lear, hoping that the adult can provide at least some assistance.

Though Headmaster Lear still has not gotten up from his chair, he is still the Headmaster, right? Surely he could be of some help. Yes, he may try to punish them for trying to sneak away, but any adult with a clear head would prioritize the chaos happening right now. Skylar attempts to look through the smoke to find the said wizard, sitting comfortably in his chair with shades over his eyes. She was still a distance away, so the Gryffindor attempts to call out to him.

"Headmaster Le—" However, before the girl can finish her sentence, something unexpected happens. Skylar could only stop in her tracks and stare dumbfounded at where her Headmaster was supposed to be.

He was swallowed by the Earth. Solomon Lear, Headmaster of Hogwarts and probably the only adult supervision they had, just disappeared into the dirt. Gone. All that magic and knowledge eaten up by some hole in the ground.

"What. The. Actual. Fuck." If her mother heard her, she would most certainly wash her mouth with soap. Only if she makes it out alive though.

"Okay, okay. We just got to get out of here. Our Headmaster just disappeared but that's totally fine. Maybe we could just—"

Crash.

Skylar looks to the source of her sound, only feel her heart drop. As if this day couldn't get any worse. The poor first year stares in fear as a large Acromantula crawls out of the forest. No. Not one. Three. Screams echo around her as various students get injured. Her eyes widen in horror as two of her classmates were skewered by an Acromantula. Blood was everywhere as they bleed out, the awful sight burning itself into young Skylar's eyes. Another Acromantula tramples over a girl and breaks her ribs. Another student is also trapped under the creature's webs, unable to move.

She hated spiders. She always had. The crawly little arachnids posses far too many legs to be normal. It freaked her out, and she could feel panic build up in her chest. The were too close, too near. They were advancing forward and showing no signs of stopping as the destroy everything in their path. Skylar's hands were shaking as she takes a stumbling step back, her other hand grasping Mikaela's.

Then the creature turned. Its eyes, oh so many, seem to train on the pair. She was going to die. Her mind scrambles for anything that could help, and all she could come up with was the spell she learned in the library. Flipendo would not work on a creature this large, but she had learned a spell recently that would either help or make things worse.

Drawing her wand, the first year focuses on the large creature that was beginning to approach. She could spot the other Acromantulas crawling near from the corner of her eye. She was going to die anyway, so might as well.

"Ingens Explosiones!" Skylar casts, her voice loud and wavering only slightly. She wills her hand to stop shaking and her voice to project. The Cascading Jinx is a spell erupts into an explosion, hitting everything within its range. She prays it won't backfire, but at least she can say she tried.

Zach learnt the boys' names: Damien Dragonclaw and Mamori. The oldest of the group nodded. Zach believed that knowing their names could make the work better.

Well, that was what he thought at first, before Damien shot many words at the pink-haired. Great... Zach sighed. He could see that he wouldn't have a good team to work with. He just hoped that these boys could solve their problems soon, and they could finish their task more quickly. Being in this place made Zach feel itchy.

Zach looked at Rosaline, trying to read her and only found that she was... chuckling. The Fourth Year tilted his head, trying to find what was funny between the boys' bickers.

"Sorry to interrupt, Damien and Mamori," Zach paused. "We need to finish this detention as soon as possible. So..." the boy paused again, trying to find words. This instantly turned really awkward. "I just hope that your problem with each other won't affect much of our work on this detention."

Awkward. Really awkward.

Then Damien said something. Zach looked at him with a look of What Now.

He tried to see what Damien had found. But nothing. Zach couldn't see anything or anyone. He listened more to Damien and tried to look for the man who fit his description. "Are you sure about it?" he asked, making sure that Damien really saw the man.

Damien asked if they should go to look for the man. Mamori said that it was the time for them if they wanted to observe the man. And Rosaline... Zach just couldn't believe what he heard. She said she was okay to investigate the man.

Goodness...

Zach could leave them to focus on the detention only. But no. Something inside him was also curious about the man. He had an internal conflict about whether he wanted to finish the detention or go with the investigation.

And as usual, the voice that told him to investigate the man with the group was louder. It wasn't the first time Zach had made this kind of decision. In Fall Ball 2024, he chose to sail with his friend even knowing the danger ahead. He also decided to fly in a race despite his fear of heights last year. And what would go wrong with going with this investigation?

"I will go with you if you guys are going to investigate the man. If this turns dangerous, we will send a warning with Spark Charms," Zach said. "You guys can lead the way. I will look from behind."

Zach was ready with the spells he had learnt. It's adventure time, he guessed. Hoped they wouldn't get into more trouble. Perhaps finding this mysterious man could grant them house points for whatever reason. Bravery maybe.

Damien face turned a bright red whenever Zach mentioned his and Mamori name. It wasn’t that they truly had problems more so Damien was pissed at him for tricking him, it made him feel like he was just too gullible and easy to trick so that’s what he was truly pissed at as honestly it was his fault he went to the woods. Plus after Mamori little lecture he was too irritated to argue back with the boy. “Oh! Of course, I can let my little issue with Mamori. Since it’s not going to do me much good anyway.” as he said this he sent one small tiny look at Mamori before sighing and focusing back on Zach. He honestly was still pretty pissed but for right now he could put it aside besides if push comes to shove he just would ban Mamori from the snacks he had on him that seemed like it would be fair giving the fact that Mamori seemed to enjoy the treats Damien mother would send him.

His eyes snapped back to Zach as his attention was brought back to the man he saw in the woods. He was very sure he saw a man in the woods, Damien has always had good eye sight due to him painting he notice a lot of details some people miss so he was positive his eyes had caught a man around the forbidden forest. “I am very positive that I saw a man, he was quite strange looking so I don’t think I’d forget a face like that haha even though I couldn’t see him good I do recognize he was a man” he sighed as he wished he could have gotten a better look of the man.

He smiled when Rosaline and Zach both agreed to go with Mamori and him to investigate the man, it makes him feel honestly better as he did not want to go with just him and Mamori, no offense to Mamori of course but Damien was pretty postive he would leave him if something dangerous was heading their way and he did not feel like fighting for his life.

Lauren froze, her wand clutched in her hand, its tip still pointing towards the acromantulas. They rounded in on her, their numerous legs twitching like mad and pointed towards her. But the first-year Slytherin wasn't scared -- her mind was somewhere else entirely. It was focused on the words that came from Rosie's mouth. Her mind was, in fact, whirling like mad as she struggled to process all that had happened.

She had told Rosie that she hated her. And she had meant every single word of it. By accusing her of being a murderer, she proved that she was unworthy of being Lauren's trusted confidant. She proved that she never liked her, that the comfort she had offered to Lauren in the past had all been a lie. And Lauren would much rather be hated by such a person than thrive on a friendship that was fake. She had to end all that. There was no other way.

The voices had come back. Again. But maybe, one said, maybe she's right! Maybe you're the one who's truly in the wrong! Listen carefully to what she said -- it was a confirmation of your doubts about yourself. What you think of yourself as. She's telling you that everything you thought was true. It was true! And you never deserved her --

The other voices joined in at the last sentence. YOU NEVER DESERVED HER! YOU NEVER DESERVED ANYTHING! YOU DON'T DESERVE LIFE! YOU DON'T DESERVE BEING LIKED BY ANYONE! AND FINALLY JUSTICE HAS BEEN SERVED! More voices echoed the vile words screamed by the damned voices that always took control of her brain. Lauren tried to shake her head in disgust, but she knew that it was no use. The voices always won. They were always the ones who took control of her. The reason why she was so fucking impulsive, and so fucking hated. By everyone.

Lauren had her answer now, at least. Yes, she was hated. She had only felt that, at times, she was not because of Rosie's exterior mask. Inside, she thought that Lauren was the worst creature to ever have inhabited this universe. She sighed. There was no way out of this, and she had to accept it. All of it. That she was truly a monster, that no one would ever come to like, love, or even appreciate her for who she was. And most certainly, Lauren Loratrix Vanes did not deserve it.

YOU DON'T DESERVE IT! YOU DON'T DESERVE IT! YOU NEVER DESERVED IT! YOU NEVER DESERVED IT! The chant took control of her mind again, forcing her to drown in self-loathing and lost hope. She hated herself more than anything in that moment, wishing that the ground could just open up and swallow her. She wished that she had never been born so that such a monstrous creature (herself) could never have disturbed the peace of human beings. Everything she said was wrong. Everything she did was wrong. Everything she said or did, at the very least, hurt someone. Even if she didn't mean anything.

She felt as if she was a repelling force, and that everyone would always leave her. She was nothing, worthless, no -- even worse than that. She was something that would always stop the world from running correctly. She was something that would always make others hate her. She trembled when she pictured her best friend, Briar, leave her just as Rosie did, but quickly pushed the thought away. One friend --

NO, WHY ARE YOU CALLING HER A FRIEND? SHE'S A VILE CREATURE! A LIAR! SOMEONE WHO HIDES BEHIND A MASK AND ACTS LIKE SHE'S A TRUE FRIEND! BUT SHE'S NOT, AND SHE JUST SHOWED HER TRUE FUCKING COLOURS! WHY WOULD YOU FOR ONCE SECOND CONSIDER THAT DAMNED WOMAN A FRIEND? SHE'S A LIAR AND A COWARD, TOO SCARED TO SHOW YOU WHAT SHE REALLY THINKS, UNTIL NOW! APPARENTLY, THAT STUPID BITCH THINKS THAT SHE CAN USE HER WORDS AGAINST YOU, BUT YOU HAVE TO SHOW HER THAT SHE CAN'T! THAT YOU'RE STRONGER THAN SHE EVER CAN BE! MAKE HER REALISE THAT SHE'S THE WORST CREATURE WHO EVER LIVED!

But --
Another voice attempted to counteract the first, because interiorly, she knew that she, too, was in the wrong. Lauren had been pathetic, she knew it. She had indeed been undeserving of Rosie... before. But not now. As far as she was concerned, in her current state, they were both equally damned. And she hated being in the same level as a liar, but knew that she couldn't argue otherwise. She knew that she was the worst person ever -- no, a horrid creature as she was undeserving of the pride in calling oneself a human being.

But she did have to admit that was Rosie said was true. Not only true, but undeniably true, excluding the part that she couldn't stand up to her family. That, she could do. But she had indeed been... too desperate, in a sense, to prove that she wasn't a worthless failure to her family to put Rosie in danger. She still regretted that decision, but at least she kept her safe. She would've flung herself at the acromantulas if they dared near Rosie, because she knew that this was all her fault. Entirely hers.

She listened to the next part of Rosie's rant, saying that she, Lauren, thought that she was brave because she tried to hurt herself, and just managed to bite back a retort. She didn't do that just to sound brave! She did that all for justice, to prove to herself that she did have a sense of balance. She wanted to uphold the ways of justice, where she would punish herself if she felt unworthy. That had all been what she was trying to do. Then she gulped when Rosie mentioned that it would make up for what she knew deep down. That... that was true. She was scared. And she did want affection. Attention. Someone to tell her that she wasn't as worthless she she believed she was.

Did that mean, though, that she was lying to herself all along? That despite what her mind told her, so many times, she still believed that she was deserving -- no, that would never happen! She never believed that! But... why did it sound so much like she was forcing herself to believe it instead of in her own accord?

That, was the question. Why did she aspire to be liked so much, when she knew that she didn't deserve it, when all the voices in her mind told her that? Surely they couldn't all be wrong, could they? The voices would have come to her, of all people, for a reason...

NO, OF COURSE NOT! STOP THINKING YOU'RE SO SPECIAL, WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE, HEADMASTER LEAR? EVERYONE HAS THESE VOICES, BUT YOU'RE THE ONLY STRANGE PERSON, BECAUSE YOU'RE JUST ABNORMAL! AND WORTHLESS AND PATHETIC AND THE WORST THING EVER! WHY WERE YOU EVEN BORN? WHY CAN'T YOU JUST DIE? WHY IS YOUR LIFE SO MESSED UP? SURELY, IF THE VOICES HAD A CHOICE, THEY WOULDN'T HAVE CHOSEN TO ADVISE YOU, YOU STUPID LOSER!

Of course they wouldn't. Maybe they just wanted to twist her life around and make her suffer even more. Yeah, that was more like it. Somehow, 'torture' and 'suffering' was in her dictionary while 'being liked' was not. Then she remembered how her other friends treated her -- like she was normal. Like she belonged. Like she was important, was amazing, was popular. She loved them, but with a grimace accepted the fact that she never deserved them. She had spent months telling herself that she didn't deserve Rosie. But now that they had turned against each other, those thoughts had gone away.

Her mind drifted back to Rosie's words at the thought of her, and gradually the voices were drowned out. Her friend -- (no, why did she keep thinking that? Rosalyn Aria Willows should be remembered as an enemy in her mind, not as a friend anymore!) Rosalyn -- she urged herself to use her proper, formal name now that they no longer shared a positive connection -- had told her that others were right not to care about her. Then her eyes blazed in fury. What right did she have to say that her other friends -- no, her real friends -- shouldn't care about her either? Then the thought washed itself away as quickly as she thought it as she remembered that she didn't deserve them and that she had no right to insist that they did care about her. It was their choice, and theirs alone.

She sighed. She couldn't control anything in the world at that moment. She didn't even take part on it. Everything was all others, others and others. She felt powerless as the beetle near the tree trunk, unmistakably trying to escape from the acromantulas. But they were the least of Lauren's worries at that moment. She had to think. Rosie had just told her that she kept complaining and venting to her, needed her help, hurt herself, hurt and risked her and gotten her into danger when she had never done the same to her. The comment alone was enough to make her hackles rise, and curled her lips into a snarl even though she said nothing.

Friends were supposed to complain and vent to each other! Friends always needed one another's help! Friends always get another into danger, and forgive each other for it! You could've done the same to me as well! I could've supported you! I could've comforted you! You could've done anything to me, and I wouldn't have minded! You tell me that it's unacceptable! You think that I just want to be the main character! But I don't! I just want to be normal! I could've been your therapist, too, if you needed it! But you showed me that you didn't! If you hated me for doing it, then tell me! I could've apologised! I could've made everything right again!

She didn't say any of this loud, just pursed her lips while the thoughts screamed in her head -- this time hers, and hers alone. Not the voices'. Just her own thoughts, and they were already whirling like mad. She itched to respond all that to Rosie, to let her thoughts out of the cage (her mind) and just show her what she really thought. She pursed her lips. Lauren wasn't the only person who had flaws. Rosie did, too! But unlike Lauren, she never admitted it. In some way, Lauren believed that she was even worse than she was. At least she knew that she was worthless. Unlike Rosie, who apparently thought that she was the center of the world.

Her whole body trembled when she heard Rosie telling her to accept that she had no potential and that she was a horrible person. So that was where it all led to. Unfortunately for the other Slytherin, Lauren already did, and would not 'get help' from someone who wasn't eleven. To be honest, Lauren didn't even know what a freaking 'therapist' was. It wasn't like she, too, was a mudblood! Rosie had thought that she would put her horrible ego aside. Unfortunately, Lauren had already tried, and it didn't work. It wasn't her fault that she couldn't control it!

She felt slightly guilty when Rosie told her that she stayed even when she got attacked by Lauren's Howler. She didn't ask her to. It had all been out of her own accord, yet she acted as if Lauren had forced her into it. The young Slytherin clenched her fists. She would not allow her actions, decisions and words be twisted like that. And she would show Rosie exactly that.

Images flashed in her mind. She was back in the Slytherin Common Room. Rosie was standing before her, desperately trying to comfort her after she received the Howler from her parents -- she talked about her own family, all that happened, listened to Lauren's every word, and Rosie had stayed there... just for her. But Lauren had been reminded of her family, thought that she was underserving, and made Rosie feel horrible when she was telling her about her life. She had apologised, not once, but thousands of times. And she... she had been there for her.

So the anger directed at Rosie didn't last long. When her mind finished processing Rosie's every last word, Lauren began to agree with Rosie's words. She was horrible. She had no potential. She was worthless. She was a monster. And most of all, she was surprised that it had taken Rosie so long to realise it, even though she had told her what she thought for so many times. And now she was acting like Lauren never knew it.

And then, admist her stupidity, Lauren found out the reasons behind Rosie's hostility. It was because she told her that she hated her, and she couldn't cope with that. She snorted, then felt her face hot with pride. She had seen through one person's ploys today, and found that inside, Rosie was even weaker and more pathetic than she was. She thought that she was sensible, that she was a great friend, that she was just the most amazing person to ever have inhabited the planet. She rolled her eyes. Rosie should've been the one told to accept that she was pathetic, not Lauren.

Rosie just wanted people to like her. To please people. She lived only to be people's joy and entertainment, not knowing that those sorts of people would be forgotten easily. No one would ever come to appreciate the work she did, the effort she put into making people happy. People would just think that she was average. At least Lauren lived for a reason -- to seek revenge. Rosie didn't. She plainly lived for the sake of living, to make people happy when she failed at the first glimpses of a challenge.

Lauren then decided that she would have to say something to Rosie in order to show her that she wasn't always right. She would show her the embarrassment of criticising someone and finding out that she was no better. She would show her that her life was no joke, regardless of what it truly was (it still remained a mystery to Lauren). She would show her.

"I know," she said. Her voice came out smaller than what she'd expected, with a tint of pride in it. At least she's not all that stupid, for once, she thought. "I already accepted all that, and unfortunately for you, life isn't what you always expect it to be. You think that I'll lose my ego even if I don't have one, if I accept what I am. You already know that I know. I know I'm worthless. I know I'm horrible. I know I'm pathetic. I know I'm a monster. Oh, Rosalyn Aria Willows, would you like to tell me more things that I already know of? I don't believe that I'm as stupid as you think, stupid I may be." She was not going to let her enjoy the satisfaction of thinking that she was right.

"And," she added, "I know that you're still a liar. Because what you said came from your heart. You never liked me. You never wanted to be friends with me. You hated me from the start. I know that you don't care, and neither do I. But here's a tip: if you're still gonna continue being the people-pleaser you are, then tell people what you really think."

She was dimly aware that the acromantulas were sinking their legs on her shoulders, but Lauren didn't flinch. Her eyes were fixed on Rosie, her glare deep with hatred, so deep that Rosalyn Willows froze and stopped walking away from her and back to safety.
Permission to godmod Rosalyn was granted by her writer.

Conversation typically had a way of rendering itself monotonous, but such was not the case when conversing with Colin. Rather than being tiresome, the carefree chattering was rejuvenating, in a way. The words exchanged were not formal nor proper; simply two new acquaintances exchanging discussion about their passions and the activities in which they found joy in — broom sports being the main subject of interest. There was no facade of politesse carried within their words, no duplicitous undertones (she would assume) that she found herself second guessing, and it felt refreshing. Sometimes joy could be found in the simplest of exchanges in the strangest of circumstances. Quidditch was brought up several times, and so was Broom Racing. The Slytherin boy mentioned an urge to pull out his wand during a Quidditch match, prompting Ebony to let out an unprecedented laugh. The thought of looking out for jinxes and hexes while simultaneously dodging bludgers was... exhilarating, to say the least. Perhaps a little too challenging; she preferred Quidditch spell-less. "I'm sure you could sneak a spell or two in without the referee noticing," she joked. It had been a while since she had joked like that. Who would have thought the most light-hearted of conversations would take place during the most tedious of detentions? They had even turned cleaning the debris into some sort of game — against a pirate king of some sort? Or were they the pirates? The brunette was unsure if she fully understood the context of this game that they had going on, but what mattered was that it made the irksome task of clearing debris all the more entertaining. Under normal circumstances she would have labelled such shenanigans childish, but it was rather appreciated now. All senses of preservation of reputation or maintaining a dignified facade had melted away; such trivialities mattered little in such exigent circumstances.

Only after many flipendos did she pause to observe what was under the debris.

The earth was oddly scorched. The soil blackened, appearance akin to soot and ash, as if somebody had aggressively tapped the residual contents of a smoking pipe onto the ground this may or may not be accurate, I’ve never used a pipe. The earth stood oddly barren, strangely void of the presence of vegetation beneath the branches and weeds that they had been assigned to clear. Was it from the incendio (or incendios) that had been cast earlier? One would assume so, but it made no rational sense; the fires had not been cast near them. Strange.

Colin?”

He had wandered off further away, now, a couple tens of metres away, distant. Ebony ran towards his direction. Perhaps it was the impending sense of doom that prompted her to seek safety. Safety was always found in numbers. The Ravenclaw was unsure whether she was deluded, psychotic, but she could almost hear somewhere across the vast expanse of earth screams of panic that emanated from her schoolmates and — was that the blurred shape of an acromantula that graced the corners of her eyes? No, she was not deluded nor hallucinating. The acromantulas and the fire and the screams and the horrible sounds of ribs crunching were very much real. The hairy beasts — XXXXX rated wizard killers, as she had learnt in class — had emerged from the forest and had begun trampling the children in the clearing. Truly a typical day at Hogwarts.

Colin was sniffing the earth quite passionately in the meantime; he mouthed something, but it was inaudible under the chaos that had emerged to the girl's humanly dull ears.

“— some connection! If only I could sort it out!” Ebony finally drew close enough to hear his ramblings; he mentioned something about reporting a source to the Headmaster, whatever that meant. Just what had he found?

She took a glance towards where the headmaster was sitting. Was. Was, and was no longer. He no longer sat there. She watched rather incredulously — for she refused to believe such strange phenomena could occur, even in a magical world — as the earth consumed him. The soil crawled, and then it pulled, and then the old man had been consumed. Swallowed whole. As though the soil itself had an appetite.

“I fear reporting it to him is no longer an option,” she stated almost monotonously, motioning to the patch of earth that now stood motionless. What exactly had occurred there she did not dare speculate, but she could feel the hairs at the back of her neck prickling. Acromantulas, and now they were lacking adult supervision. Brilliantly discomforting. Her grip tightened around her wand; she was poised to strike at anything that was to come their way.
