"Narumi! It's time to go!" he growled and shook his teammate, who had fallen asleep while waiting for the event to begin. How Chikao Narumi was so careless and nonchalant, Akira would never understand. The Hexwizard Tournament was about to start, for god's sake, and his teammate had no respect for the school he represented by snoring away. Was this the image of Mahoutokoro that he wanted to give the world?

Akira could smack him in the face, but he didn't want to seem crass. It was time to go, and Narumi didn't even budge in between snores. Scowling, Akira drew his wand. "Winguardium Leviosa," he cast quietly, with a deft swish and flick of the wrist. The large boy effortlessly levitated a few inches off the ground, looking somewhat like a floating ghost or a dead body, but this was better than missing a member of their team. And this was how they entered the ballroom amidst the cheers of the audience.

Upon reaching their board, Akira would promptly drop him in a heap on the floor. Heck, he could give him a kick, too, but not with everyone watching. "Time to get to work, Narumi," he said, reminding the lazy boy of his duties, something that seemed almost routine for Akira by now.

Akira's gaze scanned their opponents on the other side of the board. Not one of those Americans looked very intimidating. He approached Hitoshi-senpai, Midorimori-senpai, and Kohana-senpai and greeted his seniors with a dip of the head. Kohana-senpai looked ready for battle, muttering a random string of words under his breath as he stared down the opposing team. Was this his... war chant? After staying in the same tent with Kohana-senpai for a summer, he was beginning to question his own perception of the boy. There seemed more to this delinquent than met the eye -- something more soft, vulnerable? -- or was he just imagining things? "Readying yourselves for battle, senpais?" he asked conversationally. "I think the winds will be in our favor today," he said confidently, knowing he would do his best to loyally serve his school and his team, even if a little dipsh*t like Narumi was one of them.

This whole situation had occurred because Chiaki couldn't say no.

She didn't know the tasks that would be involved for this game. She didn't know there would being hitting and being knocked unconscious. She didn't know how incredibly anxious this was going to make her. And, she, of all people, was supposed to be doing the knocking out.

Clutching a palm-sized squishable cat plushie, a trembling Chiaki took her place with her mess of a team, trying to ignore the probable odd looks that all the spectators were sending in their direction, with one member of their team asleep on the floor, one scowling at the sleeping boy, two stoic and expressionless (unnerving her more than a little), and one smiling easily. But she was going to be working closely with these people for the upcoming year, so she supposed she would have to get used to their... quirks.

"Good afternoon, all. I hope you are all feeling ok, and are ready to win!"

Louca was ready. Well, okay admittedly, he knew little about chess but that was why they were a team. The players would be able to help each other. He had to admit though that he was curious to see how the human chess game would work. And excited for the tournament to start. He lived for a thorough challenge and this tournament was certainly going to provide this. Maybe even enough to keep him from quite literally climbing the walls...who was he kidding? He lived to give his professors grey hairs.

Looking back, he grinned at Jamie as he ran his hands through his hairs, causing his hair to stand up slightly. Calling back, he said "You ready for this? Because I definitely am! Let's do this!" He whooped with excitement as he listened to the deafening crowd.

Ever since his name had been chosen to be the Ilvermorny Champion, Miles had tried his best to prepare for these tasks in mind and body - but not so much soul. He had read up on charms and enchantments, on hexes and incantations. He had studied and studied and studied. He woke up early to run, made sure to eat healthy, exercised, and strengthened. He tried to get proper sleep - although far too often he found that difficult to come by. He hoped to make his classmates proud, his professors, his headmaster, his grandmother, his parents, his town, and his country proud. Would he be, yet again, just a disappointment as usual?

Entering the Ballroom, where the first task would be held, Miles looked up to streamers in black and silver and sparkling confetti to try and find his support in the stands, whether it be from professors, students, those from MACUSA or whatever. He could choose to dread this moment and be scared, or he could take it in and realize it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Finding some of his support, he'd show his confidence and give a wave and a smile in their direction.

He glanced back to Olive Adair, his chosen special person, who walked behind him and gave her a smile as well, hoping that his confidence would catch on with her and maybe filter down to the rest of TEAM ILVERMORNY!

And so the day arrived.
The first day of the Hexwizard tournament. A day that Hadashi was both greatly looking forward to, and immensely dreading. Looking forward to, because he and his team could bring well deserved honor and recognition to the most elite magic school in the world, Mahoutokoro.
Dreading, because his team had Chikao Narumi in it. Someone who couldn't put his all into something if a Death Eater had a wand to his head. And worse yet, led by the walking screw-up, Aryaan Shamsi. Hadashi had all but confirmed his suspicions that foul play led Shamsi to get the role of Champion, something that Hadashi still secretly seethed over. If anyone deserved champion, it was him.

Hadashi breathed. This was not the time to get hung up on how indescribably undeserving of this honor Shamsi was. What angered him further was that merchandise with HIS likeness was being sold. Just thinking about Shamsi being the face of Mahoutokoro in his tournament for all the world to see was almost enough to make Hadashi vomit.

No, NO. Do NOT think about that. Not now. This was too important.
Hadashi calmed himself, and when he looked back up, Akira Shimizu was approaching. At least there was SOMEONE on the team he could count on.
Wait... was he-
Was Narumi SLEEPING?!

Hadashi had to close his eyes and conduct meditative breathing exercises to keep himself from snapping. This was the most important moment in Mahoutokoro's recent history, and this boorish half-wit was SLEEPING?!

Hadashi spoke with the tone of someone barely keeping his anger in line.

"Shimizu-kun. Please wake up Narumi-kun. I don't care how you do it. I don't... entirely trust myself to be gentle at the moment."

When Hadashi calmed himself further, he addressed his team. Yes, his team. Shamsi may have been champion, but he was the farthest thing from a leader Hadashi could conceive.

"Has everyone prepared themselves? We will bring glory to Mahoutokoro. Lets start by winning this task, hm?"

Chikao felt a slight pain surge through the back of his head, jolting him awake and letting out a bellowing yawn. He slowly adjusted his body in order to be sitting up with his legs crossed on the dusty floor, causing his lavender robes to be slightly sullied. His vision was slightly blurry, and the loud shouts and screams from the crowds were dampened as he was coming to his senses: "Yawn Man, I had the weirdest dream, about how I had wings flying through the air. I was having so much fun till-" his speech was cut short, as Chikao was finally beginning to look around and take note of where he was. Why was there screaming? Why were his friends, and Hadashi, here? Why is there a chessboard? Who are those other students? Wait, are those his various teachers in the crowd? Wait, was that a representative of the Japanese Ministry of magic he just saw?! For once Narumi actually made a slight gulping sound and had a slight feeling of regret in the back of his mind.

He looked towards his teammates hoping that this was a dream and he was still sleeping, but their expressions towards the boy only disproved his hope. He sighed, accepting his fate that he was most likely going to be expelled for his entrance display at this match. Even on such an important event like this, the boy just couldn't feel serious nor could he give a damn about how everyone felt about who he was.

He stood up, and began to perform some early stretches: "Arweirrr rasaiuir ruucr, whasa'r dha llil ail dhed?" Always serious looks, where's the fun in that?, Chikao was annoyed and his joyful spirit became cold and menacing in tone. Looking back at his team, he gave them a devious grin. Chikao had hoped the event would be fun, but he couldn't feel the honor, the glory, or the admiration many others were probably feeling. Cracking his knuckles, only a few words escaped from his mouth that could perhaps save him from expulsion: "Fine, I'll go all out for once in my life."

It was time.

The time was here! The Hexwizard Tournament had finally begun and Hiro was extremely excited about it.

Of course, the first thing he saw upon entering the ballroom were the streamers, notably the black ones. Black happened to be Hiro's favorite color, that and gold. As Aryaan walked out, Hiro quickly followed behind him. The order had been told to them earlier, so they wouldn't mess up when coming out to the public when their school was called out by the announcer. Hiro flashed a bright smile at everyone present as he walked out and hoped to see some familiar faces. As they reached their destination, Hiro glanced over at Aryaan as the champion spoke to Christopher.

Aryaan's words about crushing their opponents made Hiro grin and he tried to catch the boy's eye to give a tiny nod. Akira was doing something rather amusing again with Chikao. Levitating the boy who had once been his best friend, Akira was busy 'dragging' Chikao to their destination and plopping him down. Hiro couldn't help but shake his head at the sight because it was really quite amusing to him. Even at a time like this, Kao could be so relaxed and at ease! Still, there was a time and place for naps. With his newly turned robes navy blue, Hiro made his way to the bench.

And took a seat nearest to the board, so he'd have a first hand view of the game.

Which also meant, once they got dragged off the board, Hiro could go over and tend to their injuries too.

He made eye contact with each of the members of his team and then that of the other teams. There were lots of familiar faces out there and some unfamiliar ones too. Well, that was going to be fun! As Chikao's expression changed into a more serious one, Hiro grinned at him. "Can't wait to see. They won't know what hits them." He said, making eye contact with Chikao, wondering how things would proceed when the game started. The crowds were bustling and there were a ton of people. If any more people came, there wouldn't be enough room to breathe!

Iris hardly ever considered herself to be someone that got nervous easily, but the rubbing on her index figure on her wand was giving her away. Competition was thrilling, that much is always true, but there was a lot more pressure on this than other things. Iris continued to push the idea from her mind. Stressing about it wasn't going to help anything. She was going to try her best and her team was going to win. She'd bring glory to her school and people would talk about her in a good light. Finally she'd make a name for herself instead of squishing herself into a box of who she was supposed to be.

When Iris first walked in the room she held herself with confident grace, trying to pretend like the stunning decorations didn't phase her. The ballroom had been completely transformed into three gameboards of checkered squares, surrounded with black and white decorations. The viewers were the first thing that was daunting to Iris. There were important people here. Adults were scattered among the eager classmates. Iris could feel eyes on her. It was unnerving. The cheers and roaring applause stirred up an excitement in Iris that soon overwhelmed her apprehension.

There were proceedings, people entering and moving around, corralled into the places they needed to be. Iris found herself standing on an ebony white square on the ground, head held high, wand in slightly fidgeting hand. Iris nodded at any teammate that met eye contact and hoped she could send confidence to each member, as if that might help their chance of winning.

The Hexwizard Tournament was underway, and Jamie was absolutely ecstatic. He could hear the crowd as the doors drew ever closer. Apparently, in addition to the six magic schools, there were a lot of important wizard people here too. The vast amount of illustrious names and titles floating about the room meant nothing to him, but he knew that he was under close supervision. That just meant he had to be even more awesome than usual!

As the intrepid Ilvermorny team entered the ballroom, Jamie sucked in a deep breath. The mug of butterbeer he had bought earlier shook in his hands. He wasn't sure if he was excited or about to barf. Their first challenge was but a mystery to him-- something about chess, if he remembered correctly. But chess was boring as all hell! How would these wacky wizards make it fun? Jamie wondered idly if he should have actually made an effort to pay attention earlier. He had no idea what lay ahead.

Finally, the ballroom doors burst open. Thunderous applause and cheers hit Jamie like a tidal wave. He gawked, bug-eyed, as Miles led the team into the fray. This was almost like the Trail Blazers games back home, except a million times more magical, literally!
Jamie met Louca's gaze as the other boy smiled back at him. He laughed out loud as an identical grin began to spread across his face. He downed the remaining contents of his mug, chucked the thing away with reckless abandon*, and ran over to throw an arm around his friend's shoulder. He was definitely excited. It was their time down here!
"Let's go!"

Roleplaying as Phylicia Stanwood
Interactions: Ilvermorny team
Heavily mentions @Lindsey Springhall [Maximilien de Fostoncy] and @Katrina Walker [Iris Fields]
So, Phyllis was generally a pretty enthusiastic person. There was the occasional sleep-deprived day, courtesy of being a student, and that was when you might catch some clouds over her sunny demeanor, but those days were few and far between, like tripping over your own feet walking down the street (this metaphor does not apply if you're spectacularly clumsy). A word like excited or cheerful, then, didn't seem to quite do this justice. She got excited about a good Quidditch scrimmage or having a sleepover or coming across that one really cute duck on the school grounds.

It was more like thrilled, adrenaline humming in her veins. The ballroom was a sensory overload, but not necessarily in a bad way. It was packed, crammed with stands and bodies and woah that was a lot of people here to watch them. Was chess really that exciting? (This chess would be, she did know that actually). She looked up--she'd done more of that since that day she'd met Maxi and followed his gaze to the petals drifting from the ceiling--and found a similar effect of appropriately-colored confetti floating down. Cool. She gave that one Canadian flag in the crowd finger-guns and yelled, "I love you Canadian-flag person!" because it was only appropriate, they had her back. There was an attempt to catch Maxi's eye, give a wide grin and double thumbs-up, but it was awfully crowded and Maxi seemed like the person that might be stressing out right now, so it was a bit of a shot in the dark.

But enough of the surroundings. Frankly, it might be hard to tune all that out to play the game--there were just so many bright colors and moving people--but she was going to try. Her team needed her best. Plus, she was maybe just a little worried about how much this would be reported on, and if she did badly, she really didn't want that reaching her parents. Okay, maybe she was a lot worried. As always, she was trying to tell herself she didn't care what they thought, and it was hardly fair to herself to chase after the approval they were finally giving just because she'd made it here. They never gave it for all the other things she cared about, like Quidditch and her art projects, and so their opinions just didn't matter. But she couldn't lie to herself, she really didn't want to lose the attention she was finally getting from her dad.

But enough of that! Everything was for her team now. She followed them out, and she was fully ready to have their backs out there. First, though, she imagined there had to be some nerves going around, though Ilvermorny had cultivated a pretty positive team environment--there were like, literal government people watching them, not to mention this might be the most important competition they were ever in. And if Phyllis was good at one thing, she sure hoped it was lifting the mood.

So she was going to make a joke. Something about them being government-level threats. It was probably dumb. She um... may have completely forgot what she was going to say, only halfway through opening her mouth. See, she caught sight of Iris. Rainbow lady. Cool oldest member of the team. And her brain stalled out for a moment.

Somewhere in the weeks of training together, Phyllis had realized Iris was not only pretty cool, but very pretty. So Phyllis, who talked to literally everyone, basically, had avoided Iris like the plague, because she just might drop dead if she tried talking to her and said something stupid. She'd like, full-on choked when Iris came in with her hair dyed blonde a few weeks ago, because she'd somehow gotten even more stunning. It wasn't just the hair, but the way she carried herself, confident and like she could absolutely wreck you, and at the same time willing to banter with the team. She was just so, so cool.

It was a little weird, because it wasn't the same way she felt about Maxi, and Phyllis really did like Maxi like that, that had fully settled in over the summer. She wanted to read all of his writing and hold his hand again and watch him look at flowers or win a game and appreciate just being around him. But she wasn't terrified of every little thing she did around him, she could kind of just be. Iris she was fully terrified of.

Okay. Okay! She really had to stop staring at Iris, it was almost game time. "Okay guys! Let's do this! Manifest your inner monarchy and get ready to be the chessiest chess pieces that ever chessed." Oh god, that was dumb and Iris probably heard that. It was fine! It was totally fine. She offered smiles to everyone, thumbs-ups and pats on the back for the Quidditch teammates that were used to her doing that, before stepping up to the board.
