Hexwizard Task 1: Mahoutokoro v Ilvermorny

She was settled on her horse, getting used to the weight of the lance with an experimental jab, careful not to poke Stephen on accident. He'd only just been pulled into play, which was probably a little hectic, but she smiled down at him as calmly and confidently as she could, which wasn't very hard--she had faith in this team. "You've got this." Really, she was living her best life.

Except she may have made the mistake of looking at Iris one more time. She looked really good in armor, what could she say? Like she was ready to absolutely stomp the team across from them, which Phyllis was 100% here for. Problematically, Iris turned. Oh no. Was she going to think she'd been staring? Okay that wasn't completely false but this was supposed to just be a quick last glance. Iris didn't look weirded-out though, she actually...

Oh shit.

She smiled at her.

Which, in retrospect, was a totally normal thing to do. Just like a decent human being kinda thing. She'd smiled at Stephen not moments earlier, hadn't she? But look, Phyllis' brain was running at about maybe 2 fps right now, not that she knew what frames per second were, and that meant a singular facial expression felt like a semi-truck hitting a fly, and she was the fly.

It was only a quick smile, Iris turning back to do much more important things than grace Phyllis with a smile, and that was a very, very good thing, because much longer in the microwave of her attention and Phyllis' sealed plastic container self would have exploded.

Yeah uh. The game. That was about to happen. A little shakily, Phyllis patted her horse of unclear realness' mane and ducked her head, just for a second, to let herself grin.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Okay yeah, now game time. She shoved the on-top-of-a-skyscraper feelings down and schooled her face into seriousness, because it was game time, and hoped her face wasn't red (it was). She could at least say that she had regained some focus by the time the start signal was given.

And then they were off. Iris almost immediately set off on a warpath straight down to the other end, and Phyllis was very wisely not watching that because she had, you know, things to do. Things like getting out onto this board, because Knights were pretty useless sitting in the back row. She moved in an L, because Knights moved in Ls, though personally Phyllis did not intend to take any other kind of L today, thank you very much. She was now a little closer to the other side of the board, but still a ways away from any opponents. And she hadn't fallen off her horse, so that was nice.

Miles and Everett got hit by a mildly concerning dark lightning-looking thing. Phyllis knew at least three things about chess, and one of them was that the King and Queen were kinda important pieces, so that wasn't great; at least Everett had hit the opposing Queen with the same, just white because color-coding. She cast a look over her shoulder at the two. "You good?" She sure hoped they were, because this game had only just begun and there was a lot more coming.

Hiro Bakugo (@Kim Sato), the champion's "special person" would watch as Christopher was summoned to the board. 「頑張ってください！でも、おそらくそれは必要ないでしょう。ただ自分に自信を持って、そこを破壊してください!」 "Good luck! But you probably won't need it, just be confident in yourself and you'll destroy out there!" It was encouraging, although the butt slapping was concerning. At least take a boy out the dinner first. 「ベンチで一番堂々としたスランプにしてあげる！」 "I'll make sure you're the most dignified slump on the bench!" There were other words of encouragement that would not result in him being unconscious that could have been uttered. Perhaps this was the more "confident" encouragement he could conceivably give.

That boded poorly for poor Christopher Runnels.

Christopher Runnels (@Bubba McGarry) would have his He-Man transformation moment, although the resultant religious vestments rather than a 10-pack and a massive sword was a likely disappointment. He still had the cliché magic boy transformation. He would flip through the verses in his book until he found something that felt appropriate. 'Ecumenical Transformation' was more apt than 'Homily' at the very least. "Father, grant me the strength to defend my king and my homeland through your holy..." As his reading progressed an unearthly golden light began to surround him, and finally his words reached a crescendo as he nearly shouted the final word, "POWEEEERRRRRR!"

Well, the attire was at the very least comfortable. It was also expensive and religion had a sort of power that perhaps young Runnels desired.

Louca Dufort (@Emma Wynn) was unprepared for the brutality of the first moves made by the opposition in a game where the goal was to brutalize the champion,

Iris Fields (@Katrina Walker) thought she knew how chess was played. How strategy was the one means to a victory. Yet, the events that would transpire would go by so fast.

A smile from Iris would leave Phylicia Stanwood's (@Bridget Collins) heart fluttering. OMG she looked at me. There as a smile! What else was the girl supposed to do with her face? it did not matter. It totally meant something. now Phylicia was going to need to survive this match to explore that meaning...

There was a strange dance between several of the Mahotokoro students. This sycophantic exchange between Akira Shimizu (@Avery Chen) from Mahoutokoro and Ginyami Midorimori (@Jack Burnett). The praise that seemed to escape the boy's mouth with such ease -- was it truly adulation or something else entirely?

「いいえ、全然」"No, not at all," Akira would respond to Ginyami. How he spoke to the elder was a far cry from how he spoke to his former acquaintance, perhaps one-time friend. 「この功績は、喜んで貢献してくれた私のクラスメートと先輩に贈られます。」 "The credit goes to my classmates and senpais, who have been such willing contributors." Such socially acceptable displays of modesty. Minus Narumi in terms of credit or accolades of course but that was something best left unspoken.
「あなたは謙虚すぎる」"You're too humble," Akira's praise was a strange thing, reserved for certain people. 「これほど控えめなのは稀で、すでに名門の名家の息子ですから」"Such modestly is rare, coming from the already-distinguished son of an ancient family," certain 'well-bred' people. Was it all due to cultural norms? The distinction of people one's sempai. Of being of a certain rank making one worthy of a designation. 「騎士としての役目を十分に果たしてくれると思います」"I'm sure you will fulfil your role as Knight very well," or was it that certain actions had consequences and Narumi's actions had resulted in this terrible dichotomy.

Ginyami would reply pleasantly. The words, all praise back and forth. Was that the depth of this relationship? Chikao Narumi (@Hunter Argentum) was ready for action and terminally confident. 「あなたは私が何をすることができるかをすでに知っているはずです.Acaise 私はあなたと同じように躊躇しません.特に私は私の力を使うことができます.地獄、賭けをしましょう.まず、私たちのうちの1人は他の好意. 好意から何かを求めることができます, 公平に聞こえますか?」"You should already know what I'm capable of Akira. I won't hold back as I did with you; especially now that I can use my strength. Hell, let's make a bet. First, one of us to go down owes the other a favor. Anything can be asked from the favor, sound fair?" Not who would win or even make it to the end of the two of them without injury, just who would go down last. OK, perhaps less confident than his expression would suggest as he made this wager.

「前回は我慢した？」"You held back for me last time?" How was that even possible? The navy robed youth next to a boy that could not even get to the board of their first task without being carried, yes carried ant not even in the metaphorical sense. The assertion was just unbelievable.

「公平ですか？」"Is it fair?" No, not really. One being a knight and the other a Bishop. The pieces were not even close to an equivalent exchange. 「そう言えば受け入れます」"If you say so, I accept." A deal made, as concerning as that would be.

"Hmph, Laica Orn dainar..." He announced in giant-speak. The Mahoutokoro youth had a rare, uncanny really linguistical talent.

Sara Kohana was charmed by his teammate Chiaki Hiroi's (@Pax Zhang) excitement over the horse Santa finally granted them. As the melee took place right in front of him, Sara would come to the incredible conclusion -- 「たぶん……クィディッチの方がいいかもしれない」“ Maybe….. Maybe Quidditch is better “

「うーん…。お会いできて嬉しいです …？"“ ummmm…. Nice to meet you …?” Sara made an awkward introduction to the horse that his chariot was attached to. He was a muggleborn, it was not everyday he got to talk to a horse that appeared out of thin air. The horse would stomp its foot twice, sadly Sara would fail to scritch the spot. How dare he. “Ahem. Hello- nice. To. meet. You.” English was international horse-speak with all those cowboys, true horsewhippers. Or maybe not. This might be some sort of French advantage. “ Bonjour*? Uhhh… h-howdy?” The horse would look back at him when he said 'hello' in French (poorly) giving the boy the affirmation that the horse definitely speaks French.

The Dark Queen Hitoshi Hadashi (@Dan Palmer) was living up his transformation. "OOOOOH ho ho ho!! Was that meant to be an attack? Oh, how ADORABLE!" He had taken a page out of the anime playbook. It was concerning. Perhaps too much power was granted to the Mahoutokoro student.

Aryaan Shamsi (@Hui Ming), the Mahoutokoro Champion would observe the dark queen's attack and how it spread across the opposition. Hitoshi was dangerous, but Aryaan likely already knew that. For now it was a good thing that Hitoshi was on his side... "Seems the Light side can't handle our Queen."

Of course they did not know Everett Brooks (@Dorian Anderson) very well if they thought he would kneel or even express fear at this juncture. It hurt, it was far more than a sting or even a pang. It. hurt. But he was not going to stand down. He was not going to back down or back away. "I'd rather lose both legs than kneel willingly to you."

Miles Thatcher (@Simon Kincaid) was enduring the theatrics of the opposition team. At least he was a dignified champion, representing Ilvermorny. He would be hit, like Everett but he would not go down. not yet. Not that fast.

"You good?" Phyllis would ask. Probably not, but he was still standing.

Stephen Schwartz (@AngelFyre McCubbin)might have second thoughts once the spells started to be slung. The crowd was cheering wildly, but his friends were getting hurt

"Looking good, Stephonzo!"

He would make a pretty corpse, looking good would be likely the least of his worries. But the carefree attitude of a friend might be all the boy needed to bolster his confidence.

Jamie Ziegler (@Gemima Sable) would ride off "Onwards!" He would nearly be knocked from his mount. But he would hold on tightly to his reigns and perhaps be astounded by his own athleticism. "Wild ride!"

The magical 'fun' of it all would come to a jarring halt when Jamie found himself in front of a dark Rook. The imagery of the teen in front of him was intimidating to say the least. "Sup?"

Elowen Fernsby (@Pea Elena Fowl) was enjoying his moment in the limelight.

The Queens

Mistress' (or Master's) Wrath: A ranged attack that can go in any direction the Queen can move. It cannot move through allied/enemy squares. A blast of arcane energy can be felt across the board. Arcane Power x 50. However, this attack is done at disadvantage and can only target 1 target.

Queen Hadashi hag gotten a taste for blood and his already swollen ego was expanding still. He would raise his scepter again and a dark ray of light, twisting and arching in its terrible currant would threaten to destroy Miles early on, making this a short match.

When the smoke faded away, where one would have expected to have seen a felled piece, and that was indeed what the crowd would have seen. The boy sprawled out on the ground, prone. Their battered book broken in twain and their fine robes partially burnt in the terrible attack, still smoking. He was not moving. No... he did. Just then! Barely able to stand, he pulls himself to his feet.

The King was safe, but at what cost?

Queen Everett would have his revenge in this frilly, god-awful dress. Bigger targets were out of the question, but Chiaki had the unfortunate distinction of being in range. A blast of shining light, much like sunlight would blast across the board.

Bishops

Invocation: Capable of blasting a target at a distance. This can move through allied (but not enemy) spaces on a diagonal. Arcane Power x 25.

Christopher was making his parents proud by reading, and he would find the spell he needed to perform by perhaps divine providence: Invocation. there was one unfortunate boy in his path to glory, the Knight Elowen. A blast of unholy light would radiate from the pages of his book and condemn the heretic.

But his attempt to deliver this unholy blow would fail as the agile knight moved out of the way.

Akira would not miss a beat as he too tried to thin the heard. Invocation of his awful wrath, a terrible blight would be cast on the Knight Phyllis. She may never have that date after all.

It would have... it should have hit. However, it did not. The boy's attack was whiffed and it would manage to veer off in an unintended direction, disbursing shortly after hitting the edge of the checkered board.

Stephen would have to destroy the Queen, they were a menace to this board. Also, maybe a little obnoxious. The best he could do from this range was Intercession, a ranged attack that he would hope could hit its mark. Hitoshi was a durable Queen, he could only hope to chip away at his endurance before he blasted through their team.

It was one of those David versus Goliath moments where the probability of a hit was low and Stephen defied the odds and struck the much older teen. It was not enough to take him down but it would be a blow to his pride.

Rooks

Shield Bash: Smashes an adjacent piece (cannot be on the diagonal) with their shield. Strength * 50 for damage on a single opponent.

The heavy armor and stomping horses only served as a momentary distraction. Young Chikao would rush to Shield Bash Rook Jamie in the face before he realized he had gone too far into enemy territory.

Jamie would duck out of the way, narrowly avoiding the attack. Things had just gotten real on the board for the boy. There would be no mercy.

Meanwhile, Sara would rush to Ginyami's aide but learn it was not needed.

Rapid Defense: They defend another allied piece as their primary action. This action takes place before the movement phase and takes priority in the action phase over attacks made against a specified piece. Similar to defending in Quidditch where a user blocks an oncoming attack made by a specific target, attacks made against this piece would be relegated to this piece (regardless of the direction of attack). If another piece attempts to land in the space that the defender chose (a specific, declared space adjacent to the chosen target), a strength check is rolled. This piece has advantage on this roll. This action does not consume the pieces movement for the round, they can still move, but their movement is considered to be the last movement in the round according to the action stack.

The polite boy was in no danger, yet. That was not likely to last for very long.

Jamie was not interested in Ginyami, he was going to take down Narumi, or die trying as he had taken up such a risky position on the board, he would have to make it count.

Did Narumi realize that the broadside of the barn had higher evasion than he did? Well, he might have been sleeping when someone explained that to him.
Iris/Castle Rook: Shield Bash @ Christopher (no movement). If anything Narumi blundered into the shield as it smashed into his face hard. He would be left with a split lip and a bleeding nose.

Perhaps that bet was not such a good idea.

Meanwhile Christopher was getting attention from a girl. It was not the good kind of attention, but it was attention all the same. She was attempting to bash his head in.

The boy basically did a backflip to avoid her attack. A needless display of acrobatics even the boy might not have been aware he was capable of but he rolled a 20. He would land on his feet with relative ease, and the unholy man would be read for another round of battle.

Knights

Eagle Eye: Capable of targeting someone either on the diagonal or in a straight line up to 3 squares. Cannot target through enemy or allied squares. 50 x Stamina.

Ginyami was protected by Sara's body. However that was not a concern as his privileged armored backside was not even targeted. He was not going to abandon an opportunity to take the advantage. Jamie was in the wrong part of town.

Ginyami was stronger than he seemed, with a glint in his eye Jamie would feel a searing pain in his head. Be plagued with terrible visions of days ahead where he failed, where he blundered and he failed to meet the expectations of those that depended on him with disastrous consequences. What sort of knight move was that? The crowd mindlessly cheered the dark knight on, but there would be perhaps a few among the throng of spectators that would feel otherwise. What sort of magic is that?

Chiaki was quickly realising the brutality of the game she'd agreed to. It was not pretty.

The opposing team's queen had aimed an attack straight at her, and although Chiaki had somewhat been expecting someone to attack her, she had not expected it to be so soon. She winced in pain, grabbing onto Ash quickly to stop herself from losing balance as she moved.

Looking around at the rest of the team, she hoped that they were doing better than she was.

Chikao turned his head away from Akira to be met with the eyes of his opponent, since when did they get there? Beneath his mask, he grinned and threw out the first attack at the boy to only be dodged scathing the boy's curly hair. He then felt the boy retaliate upon Chikao's chin, causing a bit of blood to occur from a split lip beneath the mask. He chuckled, he adjusting his face and turning towards the kid: "C'mon, take another shot." The punch was a little disappointing, as Chikao was hoping for a little more strength to be put into it. "Consider this a warning, I won't miss again." Chikao chuckled but soon stopped as the boy in front of him seemed to be in deep pain by the head, or perhaps in mind? Moving his head around, Chikao could see the ever-dreadful glare of his senpai somehow afflicting this boy with... something. Chikao gave a slightly angry glare at Ginyami; even though this was a team match, Chikao would always prefer others to not meddle in his own affairs if it was a 1v1.

G a s p. The reigns almost slipped from his grasp from the incredible discovery that the magical horse actually knew what he was saying. “OOoooOoohh that’s amazing…. Or uh, c’est magnefique” There were so many things he wanted to inquire the magic horse about. Like what made them sign up for the hexwizard tournament, if the horse are friends with the other horse chess pieces, and where they learned french. From Sara’s understanding, magical moving chess pieces didn’t have access to french lessons, or Duolingo. But perhaps that was his own ignorance. Alas, the language barrier between them was too thick. Sara had skipped his french lessons more than a few times. The French he learned from the course of 2 impulsive weeks of summer would not be able to guarantee him a smooth conversation with the horse. Also, he was in the middle of a chess battle. Not really the best time for idle chit chat, unfortunately. A past time he would need to come back around to later on, if he and the others survived this game.

It was a tad bit odd that Sara had chosen a chess piece to converse with, but as his team had their earlier pep talk, it made him sad to think the horse pieces never got a chance to wish each other good luck.

If Sara was startled from Hitoshi’s attack, it was nothing compared to this round. Chiaki, who had been in close range since the game started, had suffered a terrible blow. Despite his concern (as shown from his very displeased face), Sara attempted to steady his tone gently to not alarm the two. “ C- Chiaki san, あなたは大丈夫 are you okay? Uhh.. Monsieur Ash, comment faites-vous? how do you do?* “ A bit too panicky, Sara failed to share the information that the horses knew french. Perhaps Chiaki can put two and two together, or just assume Sara wanted to randomly show off his French to the horse.

Louca was psyching himself up, knowing that at some point he would likely need to take a hit, especially as he was staying close to Miles, their champion. After all the whole point was to protect Miles, if he went down then game over. He didn't take well to losing, but he had to admit he would hate it even more if they were to lose to another school. Within his own, fine whatever it happened. But to another school, that seemed almost unacceptable.

But unfortunately the hit came much faster and much harder than he had thought. His breath rushed out in a quick puff as he took the hit, barely registering anything before darkness spread over his vision.

Louca blinked, looking up, unsure of where he was, his body hurting....everywhere it seemed. He thought he had heard you could only feel pain in one area at a time but obviously whoever had said that had been very wrong. His hand moved slightly, and he took a full breath, or as full as he could without causing the spots that were threatening to consume his vision worse. Groaning, he pushed himself up, using all of his energy to get to his feet, swaying slightly as he got there. Rubbing gently at his chest, he quietly said "Owwwwww. That was....painful." The understatement of the century. He couldn't remember feeling that bad, ever, not even after taking a bludger to the arm.

Akira allowed a polite, gracious smile as Midorimori-senpai returned the familial praise. The smile turned into one of amusement as his senpai encouraged him to smile. How pleasant it was, to find a companion in the older boy, who was so well-mannered, like-minded, and well-bred. Perhaps it would do himself well to be in Midorimori-senpai's company more often.

"Your words are very encouraging -- I almost find myself ill-fit to receive such generous praise. I suppose I should also learn a lesson from your book, Midorimori-senpai, as you are always smiling pleasantly and you are a very influential upperclassman, yourself. If I could model my behavior after yours, I would probably find more success of the type that you embody," he responded, quite glad that he had chosen to speak with his senpai today and learn a lesson from his elder. He made a mental note to study his senpai's interactions with others in the future. What kind of subtleties would he display? What kind of words would he bestow upon certain listeners?

His shield on is senpai held, but no attacks came their way, even though there was a window of opportunity for their opponents. He watched in satisfaction as Midorimori-senpai spearheaded the front line this round. Akira himself withdrew, to protect his king's back. A rook was looming in the corner.

"Watch out and be careful, Shamsi," he said, dark eyes darting to and fro, watching the advances and possible attacks from various directions. The smile he tried came out as a grimace in the twitch of the cheeks. Well, he'd need more practice on that front. Probably the wrong context to try smiling.

Phyllis was killing it, in her incredibly humble opinion. She was moving across the board, riding a horse like she actually knew what she was doing (she had played chess and ridden a horse like two times each, but hey, she hadn't done anything dumb enough for you to know that yet). She wasn't totally distracted by one particular person who she was pointedly not thinking about. That's right, the one you're all picturing: the Canadian flag person. Obviously. And she wasn't about to fall over, also known as suffering at the brutality of this game. The same could not be said of Louca, who had almost gotten absolutely one-shotted by the looks of it, and that guy was a Chaser, so she knew he wasn't made of paper.

Louca was now even further behind her than Miles and Everett had been, and trying to face backwards when she wasn't a horseriding expert probably wasn't a sure snitch catch of an idea, but she did this all the time on brooms and had only run into trees like... five times. Anyway, she was now much more focused on the way Louca slowly got up. That hit had fully decked him. And Phyllis didn't get worried very easily, she was a sunflower-always-turning-to-face-the-sun kind of person, but this one settled in her stomach like cold, clinking marbles. What was worse, she was now a little too far away to do anything about it, even if that was just giving Louca a horse he could lean against. Which not optimal for the... had she developed older sister instincts or something? He was just so small, and her brain was spamming frowny emojis looking at him like this.

"Hey, on your feet! You haven't even seen what that book does yet!" Positivity! Phyllis was pretty sure he was going to fall over if that knight guy's horse snorted too hard, but she of course she wasn't going to say that. It looked bleak--car stuck in thick falling snow bleak--but it wasn't over, and the worst thing Louca could do was stop before it was.

A flurry of actions and movement. The mounted characters rushed him by and the old Seeker instincts came rushing back to him. Stay focused on the objective. Don't get hit. Don't get taken out.

This game was so similar but also so different from his role in Quidditch. He was still to stay out of the thick of things, and his part would still determine the outcome of the game. But there was very little he could actively do to help out. Not for the first time, he wished he'd taken on a more active piece. Just standing around left him feeling helpless.

"Just hold on a little longer, Hiroi-san." He said apologetically to the gentle-knight who had taken up the outpost directly in front of him. "This is going to calm down real soon. As soon as we win."

There was a call from Shimizu-kun, and instantly the Black King's attention was back on the board, thinking about possible plays.

It would be a sign of something bad if anyone truly believed this wasn't a tiny bit terrifying. Iris' confidence faltered slightly as she watched the actions unfold on the board in front of her. To be honest, Iris' attention was split between the audience and the chess board and most moments were spent more gauging the audience's reactions.

She could tell by the chorus of excited cheering or desolate grumblings when something important happened. Sure, just watching it all go down was surely easy to follow, right? But being in it? There were always people blocking her view and between the horses and carriages and new fancy outfits it was even hard to tell apart who was who without taking a moment to pause.

Iris had no idea if they were winning or losing. But she'd spent a moment enough taking it all in, it was time for action. She aimed at her target, an opponent in dark armor. Iris signaled the horse her plan with a nudge and braced herself as she slammed into him with her shield. She braced herself as she planned to bash into the guy but he backflipped out of the way. The audacity. It sure looked cool and at least didn't make Iris seem incompetent since he clearly was a classically trained acrobatic or something but still, that was supposed to look cool.

Iris kept her focus in the game now. No more running chaotically across the board in an attempt to look cool. Her team depended on everyone playing their cards right... or their... game stuff... their chess pieces... nevermind...
