The Buffet
Alyssea, who had been focused on decorating the cookies rather than eating them, found herself tempted by her own creation and gave it a try. Of course not without some fruit punch! Soon enough as she blinked, the world around her suddenly looked quite different from what she was used to. Gone was the color spectrum. Now she saw the world in shades of pink! Luckily feeling like she was bursting with energy was the least of her worries now, or was it? Siobhan who was merrily snacking on the decoration rather than the food itself found herself wholly unaffected, 'cept for the sugar that would soon be coursing through her system.
Poor, sweet, innocent Rai...
As she downed the pumpkin juice she must have thought someone was playing some sort of prank on her! It was sour, as if she drank the juice of some freshly squeezed lemons. That for sure did not seem like pumpkin juice?! Quite the conundrum indeed. Was it her palate? Was it the juice that has gone bad? Was she perhaps trapped in some sort of reality show?? She felt the world became a riddle and as the smartest in the room it was her job to solve this riddle! Not better was it for Koko, who found herself overcome with hiccoughs! Finding a similar fate to that Rai had previously suffered, Axyen would find the taste of his cookie changing after the first bite. It truly just got sour. Actually... anything sweet he would now try, would have him suffer as if he had bitten into lemons!
Kim found himself drawn to a reindeer shaped cookie. Perhaps for good reason? That was until he found himself feel light, almost as if he could simply... lift off the ground? Looking around he would find that he was not imagining this and that he was indeed floating roughly one foot above the ground now! Perhaps he had channeled his inner reindeer when biting into that cookie?Aly who had just managed to escape another drama, found herself seemingly drawn to more. Perhaps that was why she suddenly felt herself overcome with the need to be social and let her actions be ruled by curiosity over common sense!
Astra after her joyful encounter with the rhyming menace, well at the very least she could be sure that her replies too would now come in rhymes. Why, one might look forward to Hogwarts very own rap battle! At least the girl would feel full of energy doing so?
The Challenged
Something caught Howard's gaze. There sitting below his table sat a box, if he were to open it, he would find it locked. There did not appear to be a keyhole. Was it coincidence that he out of all people had stumbled upon it? Surenly not... What was odd however were sockets ontop the box, that and the gems that seemed to sit within them, seemingly jammed inside the holes with brute force. An emerald, a nephrite, an onyx and a peridot. Odd, was it not? Though this was perhaps not the only unsolved riddle at play...
The Ongoings
Despite an effort being made to enter with grace and stealth, both Pierre and his feline companion were simply too visible. They have not yet mastered the skill to turn invisible at wish...Then, there it was.Pierre: [d4:3], visible's Grace
Figaro: [d4:2], visibleThis was the moment four of the lovely students who dared enter a meant to be fun and innocent get together (very believable, I know), felt their sights impaired by heavy smoke. That was, except for Galton, who seemed unbothered by the going ons, at least physically. Perpetrator? None other that Smokey.Smokey casts Fumos
affects: [4d18:3,8,11,15] > Nellie, Galton, Simon, Koko
effects: -4 acc [1]
Sparky was not quite innocent either, perhaps more drastic even? Why they must have been to go to such lengths to draw attention. There was something tactical about picking the biggest cluster of students if you wanted to cause a scene. So targeting Howard was quite literally the best they could have done. But it was not Howard they hit, no, it was everyone but Howard who seemed to suffer the consequence.Sparky casts Cracker Jinx
target: [d18:2] > Howard > students in Howard's vicinity need to avoid radius damage
radius affects: Galton, Alan, Xailah, Nellie
acc: [d20:20] + 12 = 32, vs evasion of....
howard: [d20:16] + 18 = 34, miss
galton: eva m [d20:10], fail [d20:11] + 16 = 27, hit
alan: [d20:3] + 20 = 23, hit
xai: [d20:10] + 17 = 27, hit
nellie: [d20:10] + 6 = 16, hit
effect: radius damage and -3 wisdom [1] > galton, alan, xai and alan
damage: 100
That was until a voice cut through the newfound chaos and who stood in the doors of the Great Hall? None other than Méabh?! "You there, you students you, you clearly done something to cause this chaos! I know a Chaos Causation Concoction Potion when I see it, I am Méabh after all... DETENTION!" The voice sounded off, not just not like Méabh off, but actively forcing ones voice to sound completely different off. Still the not-Méabh person stomped through the hall, pointing an accusatory finger at [Smokey] and [Sparky] while doing their very best to keep up that admittedly dreadful act. So without much ado, grabbed them by their ears and began dragging them from the room [will leave, unless intercepted].Pierre - Keen Eye

Axyen's thoughts were interrupted by the sour cookie, it tasted beyond awful! Axyen threw it away, he lost his appetite. It was pretty easy to assume someone messed with the snacks and thought it was funny. Axyen decided to just avoid that general area for now. Who even needs snacks when you have... yourself! That sounded more depressing than Axyen thought, but oh well. It was what it was. He looked in shock at a student whom he never seen before cast a smoke spell that he learned in Defense Against the Dark Arts and another student cast some sort of spell Axyen didn't quite recognize, maybe he simply didn't know it yet. That didn't matter right now though, what mattered was avoiding being in the middle of all of that chaos, it was probably a good thing Axyen isolated himself from all of the other students, as he could've very easily been hit by that mysterious spell or get mixed up being stuck in the smoke spell.
Axyen jumped when he heard a new voice, a similar voice.... the Potions professor, professor Regan! However what she said didn't feel quite right. She said she recognized a potion because after all, she was Méabh, the potions professor at Hogwarts. That line didn't really sound like Professor Regan to Axyen, he had talked to the professor a few times, and of course been in multiple of her lessons, and he never once heard her speak like that before. It was spooky. What's even more strange was her voice, it sounded off from normal. Maybe she had a cold throat? No, couldn't she make some kind of potion for that? Professor not-Regan walked into the hall and pointed a finger at the two mystery students whom Axyen has never met nor interacted with.
Axyen's eyes suddenly widened at the horrible sight of professor not-Regan just grabbing the two students by the ears. Axyen had a sudden burst of feelings. Both feelings could be affiliated with Gryffindor and Hufflepuff, a student, a student named Simon appeared in Axyen's head. He said something that changed Axyen's outlook on Hufflepuff forever. Axyen got enough bravery to walk up to professor not-Regan, he didn't feel completely in control, it felt like some weird auto pilot. "P-professor Regan...." Axyen said in a quiet, soft, but audible voice. "I-I think... I think yo-you're hurting them..." Axyen added, his compassion for the two students were visible. Even if they did cause this much chaos, this shouldn't be harmed for it. "M-maybe g-go a little s-softer on them...?" Axyen suggested, he had no clue where he got this courage, but right now was no time to think about that. Axyen was shaking with slight fear, so this is what he got himself into. He wondered if he would be getting detention to or something bad would happen for trying to interfere. Maybe that's why he is not in Gryffindor, Axyen isn't fearless, he gets scared of being in places he considered creepy(e.g. dungeons) and doesn't even start that many conversations by himself. Maybe that's what made him a Hufflepuff instead, he stood up for what he believed was right whenever he believed it was needed. His care for others was always there, he always wanted to do the right thing. And so maybe, that was the reason he was a proud Hufflepuff. He felt a bit of regret for questioning a professor(he still believed this was professor Regan, and just thought she hadn't got to making a potion yet), but it was too late for that now. He had to at the very least try to do something about it.Information!!!Actions!!!Making some regretful decisions.Items!Wand.Stats and Encyclopedia!Stamina - 6 | Evasion - 6 | Strength - 2 | Wisdom - 9 | Arcane Power - 10 | Accuracy - 8

| ⠀ | There were lots of people in the area, probably drawn there for whatever event this was. Kim could hear chatter coming from all directions but paid it no mind, preferring to keep to himself and be alone. He drifted off into a sense of oblivion, dreaming about better times. The sweetness of the cookie was perfect for his tastebuds. He hadn't had sweets in what seemed like ages because he hadn't really been eating or drinking much of anything these days. Ever since the semester had started Kim only tended to eat and drink the bare minimum to survive. Otherwise, his stomach would complain vocally and attract attention. That was the last thing he needed. Being the center of attention wasn't good for him. He didn't want to face his feelings and had no idea how to break himself out of his depressive thoughts. And so, he ended up wallowing in them and getting dragged deeper and deeper into darkness. When AF sat down at his table, Kim didn't even realize someone was there at first. That is, not until she spoke to him and slid something across the table towards him. He raised his head to meet her eyes and let his own blue eyes linger on hers for a moment. Right, AF. One of @Colin McCoire and Sophie's friends. Someone he was familiar with but not exactly that close to yet. They'd spent part of a summer together when Colin had bundled them together into a muggle car. Sophie had driven them back then. @AngelFyre McCubbin. That had been her full name, although no one ever tended to use it like that. Kim had slightly dark circles under his eyes, he'd forgotten to re-apply makeup there, and he didn't really good that great right now. AF had started to say something to him but Kim wasn't exactly at his best. He tried to recall what she'd just said to him and after realizing what was going on, nodded his thanks. Thankfully, AF headed off directly after sliding a ginger cookie towards him and Kim was left alone again. The dark haired teen let out a sigh as he let his eyes flicker downward at the new cookie that had made its appearance before him. He might as well eat it after he finished the reindeer cookie. Speaking of which, why did the new cookie look so far away from him? It was almost as if he was floating above it. As Kim looked around him, he realized everyone looked a bit far off and he blinked. Wait. He looked directly downward and abruptly realized he was floating in the air for some reason. And he hadn't cast a levitation spell either, which in turn meant the cookie had been spiked. Of course it had, this was Hogwarts and an event. How could he not have expected something like this? Kim eyed the new cookie, from his current vantage point, with slight suspicion. Could that one also be drugged too? If so, what would it do to him if he consumed it? Then again, why not indulge in all this? What was the worst that could happen to him? He finished the reindeer levitation cookie and picked up AF's ginger cookie to bite off a large part of it. Might as well head over to the table and stuff himself with all the morsels there. Not because he was hungry, wanted to enjoy the refreshments and sweets, or because he wanted some sugary treats. If he'd been his normal self, all of the above would have been the answer. But as it was right now, Kim wanted to get fucked up messed up as much as he could. Maybe it would get his mind off the darkness that threatened to consume his entire being. Maybe he'd be able to forget about everything for a few minutes or so. Maybe one would end up knocking him out. | ⠀ |

Calming Presence in Effect: All Students & Beast Master Familiars Affected
Piérre blinked slowly as the warmth of the fireplace encouraged a sort of mellow sleepiness in him. Stifling a yawn with a hand, the boy found his attention distracted this way and that, never really fully able to focus on one thing in particular. Besides, it was just a silly little party with silly little kids coming to enjoy their time here. Nothing too interesting was supposed to happen, probably, unless someone decided to cause an issue like he tended to do on a daily basis because he just so happened to be bored with the status quo. It was an occurrence that happened more frequently than one might have thought...
But with a whizz and a pop of light and crackling sparks, the emerald eyes were drawn to the fray that suddenly unfolded with a sudden snap of his facial expressions from dorky and mellow to focused and shocked. Thick smoke enveloped a certain area, and while sparks were obscured, wizard crackers were notoriously difficult to ignore the sound of. Piérre happened to know the sight and sound well, funny enough. It was one of what he could consider a 'staple spell' of his. It was flashy, pretty, surprisingly effective, and just all around fun to cast. A perfect storm of perfection, and this one definitely been placed well. His eyes brightened ever so slightly and he flashed his white teeth in amusement. So here was the chaos he had come to rely upon at Hogwarts. Of course it was just inches away and ready to spring at a moment's notice. But why? What in the world was this all about...?
His head swiveled at the sound of... decidedly a voice, anyways. A voice proclaiming to be Reaganomics--the potion professor? Well, the face looked right for it? Arms still crossed but eyes widening with intrigue, Piérre tipped his head and watched the scene unfold and the proclamation that a... "Chaos Causation Concoction Potion" was the culprit of the... Cracker... Jinx... spell?
Huh?
Wow. Hogwarts' staff really was not the brightest, were they. Or maybe there had been a slip or a sort of lenience in deciding who was best to teach them about potions... and mistaking a very obvious charm for a... potion that admittedly Piérre didn't know was real or not (potions was a class he usually fell asleep in when things got boring and he decided that he didn't have enough focus to pay attention or if the potion they were learning simply wasn't interesting enough to garner his desire to learn it. But, if there was one thing that he had absolute confidence in his ability over, it was the identification of spells, particularly dueling spells that he was now responsible for teaching his team to utilize in an official match as part of his... weirdly shiny new role of Gryffindor Co-Captain.
Brows raising as he watched "Méabh" take both kids by the ears, an action that made his own sharply piqued ears ache at the thought of being nabbed by Maddie's sharply bony fingers, Piérre observed them being drug out. A boy [@Axyen Dragonclaw] also piped up on the matter, requesting that the woman be 'a bit nicer' on the two, and despite himself Piérre's green eyes glowed with amusement. Nawwwww, don't go easy on the troublemakers! Isn't that why they do what they do best? Gluttons for punishment more often than not, weren't we? We love a challenge, an act against our nonsense and to see just how much you'll react. Reactions were what gave a thrill, what made the act of mischief worthwhile regardless of the consequence. The shock, the show, the scene!
We the entertainers, the world our stage! And you, our beloved audience!
Well, you know what, though? Distraction was distraction. Piérre was an opportunist. He wanted to know what was going on and what this was all about, and he always took advantage of the moment when a moment came. So, he simply stood nearby. Simply... sat there and listened, shifting this way and that, and shifting just a bit towards that way in order to get himself into a place where he could follow or trail if they did choose to shift their positions. He glanced towards the boy who had called their attentions, but did not hold eye contact for long for fear that that kid would draw unnecessary attention to himself. 'Keep drawing their attentions.' The silent willing of intention was the message in Piérre's eyes. For some reason, he wanted something to do with this little piece of the action. What an act it would be to prank the pranksters when he figured out what was going on!
Meanwhile, the loyal silver bengal Figaro had not only leapt nearly out of his own hide when the snapbang of the spell went off with a flurry of hisses and yowls (his fur stuck up all on end and produced a small 'mane' at his scruff and his tail bristled easily twice its size) and he scuttled for cover beneath one of the tables, but when immediate danger passed he would try to do what his master had commanded of him and investigate. But... admittedly... the little feline was most attracted to the Tall Cat [Xailah] that he knew well from other encounters, the feline of a human who had felidae eyes and a slightly aloof demeanor. Figaro liked that human, liked being around her almost as much as he liked being around his human brother and master Piérre himself.
A silver bengal would pick its way through the smoke as best as possible, with blindvision eyes or not, and try to follow the scent through the distractingly burning smell. Perhaps Xailah would spot the critter first before it spotted her.

𝓘n her almost twelve years of life, Bex liked to think she hadn't done anything too particularly heinous. She certainly wasn't doing well for herself, by any means, but she hadn't ever killed anyone, nor, to the best of her memory, had she cast any unforgivables. As such, she found it hard to believe that her karma was so uniquely terrible that she deserved to be cursed with the continuous presence of- well actually she didn't know Accomplice's name, but she would figure it out!
Later though, as she had more pressing matters to take care of. Specifically that, as Accomplice had suggested, she may very well be bonkers. Whether that was due to the Very Real plot by Accomplice, or some sort of unrelated mental breakdown on Bex's part was yet to be ascertained, but regardless of what the genesis of the problem actually ended up being, the end result was the same - Bex was rhyming, and she would very much like it to stop now, please. If it wouldn't be too much trouble.
Also, she was wet and sticky from fruit punch, but this was a problem that could be solved rather easily with a towel. She doubted that a towel would be as effective on her rhyming, however, so she decided to table the soggier of the two problems for later.
After calling her a lunatic, which like, rude, but big if true, Accomplice stalked off towards one of the tables. Bex originally had no intention to follow her - instead hoping in vain to locate a professor or another authority figure who could assist her with her current predicament - but upon seeing the two familiar faces of Alyssea Brown and Raizel Voltrouz at the same table that Accomplice was heading towards, Bex quickly followed after her, diverting at the last moment to leave Accomplice behind and stand next to Raizel. Tugging gently on the older girl's sleeve to get her attention, she leaned in close to whisper to her, "Raizel, something truly has gone wrong today, I've been forced to rhyme every sentence I say."
After giving the Gryffindor girl a moment to reply, Bex intended to do what she did best, and fling wild accusations in Accomplice's direction, but only got as far as, "The redhead across from us, she's done it, I'm sure; I need you to help me, there must be a-"
At this moment, a bunch of what were maybe fireworks went off in the Great Hall, shocking Bex into silence and drawing her attention to a group of unfamiliar students, who were barely visible through a thick cloud of smoke. Had... had someone planted a bomb at the biscuit decorating event?
A shocked moment passed before her treacherous body forced her to spit out "... cure", officially completing the rhyme.
The Great Hall appeared to descend into chaos as a result of this, but thankfully a Professor had shown up to help - or at the very least, to discipline the perpetrators. But Professor Regan was uh... acting super weird. Bex had listened to this woman's voice multiple times a week since September, and she sounded nothing like this. Had Accomplice done something to her, too?
"Does Professor Regan sound... off to you? What if, somehow, she's part of this curse, too?"

❂《 ⌜ January 7, 2024 ▎ 7:00 PM ⌟▛▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔▔Forget the cookie-disguised lemon, now she has a pure lemon juice that's trying to pass for a pumpkin juice. The sour taste lingered in her mouth and it was a surprise that she didn't even spit it out and much like before, endured the horrible taste. Seriously though, is everything in this place lemon flavored?
Something is going on and for some reason, Raizel just got this urge to know more about it, get to the bottom of things. She placed the glass of ‘pumpkin juice' down on the table and then turned her head towards Alyssea. “That is not pumpkin juice.” She told her before staring at the drink that her cousin just gave her. There was no way that Alyssea would mistake a lemon juice for a pumpkin juice so what was wrong? Spiked drinks? As much as she wanted to deny that, it's gotta be the only explanation… that or the pumpkin juice had just gone bad but others are still drinking it with little to no problem. What was it then?
Raizel was so into her thoughts that she didn't even notice Astra returning to their table, mind swirling with questions about the sour cookie and pumpkin juice. To make matters worse, she doesn't know why she's even hyper fixating on these. It was just a strange feeling and of course, this Gryffindor wouldn't even think that's a problem. What matters is… why the heck are these sour? She'll get to the bottom of this even if it's the last thing she does. The girl was already standing, about to storm off to find out what's happening, answering the urge that suddenly arises until she felt a tug.
Head turned and her gaze fell on the familiar Ravenclaw girl. Right, the girl that she doesn't know the name yet, a mystery that for some reason, feels like something she should know as well. She was afraid of asking, finding it rude after all their interactions and she still couldn't remember who she is but right now, her desire to know was more powerful than her fear. But before she could even ask, the girl had given her a new set of things to wonder about. “Rhyming?” Raizel gave the Ravenclaw a skeptical look and yes, she did speak in rhymes just now. “Yup, you are rhyming.”
Fingers were pointed to none other than her other cousin, Astra Norrick who was with her brother. Astra did something? That can't be right… right? She came here with them after all but perhaps, she's hiding something. Her train of thought was once more interrupted by the sound of fireworks being set off, a smoke enveloping a part of the Great Hall. Two students, ones that she hasn't seen before being dragged by a person who she heard introduced herself as their Potion Professor, Méabh Regan.
Raizel crossed her arms as she listened in on what's going on while wondering what the heck is a Chaos Causation whatever potion. That was the first time she's heard about that but considering the strange things that had happened so far, her sour food and drink and the Ravenclaw girl suddenly speaking in rhymes then perhaps it's related. She looked over to Alyssea and Astra. “You guys feel weird or anything?” She asked them as they too tasted what was served in this event and after getting an answer, she went back to staring at the now retreating figure of ‘Professor Méabh' and the troublemakers.
Those guys hold the answers and why is the professor not doing anything if she knows there is something going on? Surely she would try to reverse whatever effect was going but instead, she's giving out punishment first. Strange, very strange and she wants the answer… right now. “She does sound very off.” She answered the Ravenclaw's question. “Well, let's find out shall we?” The Gryffindor grinned before looking over to Astra, gesturing towards the Troublemakers and then grabbing Alyssea by the arm. “No time to be eating, we're getting to the bottom of this! Let's go!” The gloomy atmosphere that was looming over her was suddenly gone, the desire to know what was going on had certainly reignited a bit of life in her.
“Can't let them get away…” she drew her wand once she was a bit close enough, following after the three and ready to cast a spell if they tried to run away.

Emma was....late......well really late according to the watch she received for Christmas. It had surprised her parents when she asked for a wrist watch and not a digital watch or even a smart watch (though Emma knew it was highly unlikely they'd get her a smart watch). However, when Emma explained that the digital and smart watches wouldn't work at Hogwarts, they were happy to purchase one as a gift. It was quite nice they had even gotten a couple different color bands for Emma to use.
Emma had known she was going to be very late, and debated even going but she felt it was important or maybe more like she couldn't resist a good cookie. Welllll....unless there was a book involved, and that happened to be why she was late. She had promised herself she would only read for 10 minutes which would give her plenty of time to get to the Great Hall, but then the herione had gotten in a bit of a tricky situation that would almost certainly lead to their death. And no one could be expected to put their book down at that point. Emma had glanced at her watch and technically she had had plenty of time, but then she just hadn't stopped until the book was finished. Hence the lateness.
Huffing and puffing, she ran (okay, quickly walked) into the Great Hall, clutching the stitch in her side as she did so. Standing there for a moment, she saw a bit of....well she wasn't quite sure how to describe it but she had to admit she had no idea what was going on. Debating whether her role as prefect required her to intervene, she watched for a few moments before sighing and moving towards the pumpkin juice. Taking a gulp out of a goblet, she grabbed one of the cookies all laid out, before watching the action curiously. Taking a bite, she decided she would intervene once she finished her cookie. After all, she had no idea what was going on and maybe they were just playing some strange game?

What came after was not expected but certainly not unwelcome, either. After a few blinks from drinking her punch, the Great Hall turned pink. Alyssea looked down at her yellow Hufflepuff robes, only they weren't yellow. They were pink. She looked at Raizel (whose face twisted yet again, but Alyssea didn't catch the expression) and her skin was a distinct shade of pink!
What was that French saying? La vie en rose? Living life with rose-tinted glasses? Whatever it was, she certainly felt it now. Everything was pink.
Not only that, her energy skyrocketed and her heart felt like it was going to jump out of her chest. Her thoughts were interrupted by the arrival of Rebecca. The girl was rhyming and Raizel even confirmed it. Alyssea looked to her drink. "Are we sure these... haven't been spiked with potions? Everything's pink for me."
It wasn't just the food and drinks that seemed to muddle everyone's perception. Looking around, a few students had been smokescreened (a Fumos? What's going on?) and there was a loud bang. For a cookie-decorating Christmas event, this was certainly not what Alyssea was expecting.
At the mention of Professor Regan's appearance, Alyssea looked up and had no moment to put her cup on the table. "Woah! Rai, where are we going?" She yelled over the commotion.

Howard would barely hear what @Nellie Lam had to say as she asked him about his name and why he had gone from Howie to Howard. Nor would he have a chance to acknowledge @Xailah Alptraum's invitation to sit as the effects of the chocolate and drink befuddled him. If he was in his right mind he would have joked with Nellie and Xai about the very serious phase he had gone through. Howie was juvenile and he we almost a grown up dammit! A silly thought really, but it had stuck with most of his peers and teachers. However, Howard was not in his right mind. "Oh, Nellie! Who cares what my name is at a time like this." The young man spoke into his arms as had buried his head. The daunting realization that he would never solve this terrible riddle was consuming his thoughts.
"No, I'm not okay!" His best friend @Alan Vanes would check in on him, but all was surely lost. Punch would spill around him, soaking into the sleeves of his robe and mixing with the food Howard had knocked over everywhere, but still this was no distraction to the task at hand. The scene would only further descend into chaos as a couple of no goods began to fire off some spells. Smoke would bellow around a few of the students while soon enough a Cracker jinx erupted around Howard and his friends. He somehow evaded the effects of both, but he had had enough!
"Damn you people!" Howard stood to shake his fist in the air but the effects of the potion only made him stumble forward, knocking over more dishes and cups. Yet there he would stand. Like an old man shouting at the kids running across his lawn. "At a time like this you choose to mess around. This is serious shit we are dealing with here! Does no body understand?!" The poor boy was almost emotional with frustration as he went crashing back down into his seat, head once again buried into his punch soaked arms. Then, there it was!
"My god." Howard mumbled to himself. Crimson eyes widened at the sight of a box laying on the floor underneath the table. "This is it..." His long arms would retrieve the package and with a bit of a wobble he would place it before him on the table. "This is it!" He claimed loudly for all around him to hear. The very riddle that had escaped him earlier. Destiny had surely brought him to this point in space and time as he reveled at the sight of it. All he had to do was open it...
"What! No!" The box had no opening. No keyhole or latch to undo. The gods were cruel, fickle beasts that had damned him to this eternal hell. His claws would search for any way to pry it open. For a moment he considered smashing it against the table with all of his force, but then the gems would catch his eyes. Three seemed to be various shades of green, but one was perhaps black. His wand was as quick as his jelly hands could muster. With one eye closed to attempt to focus his senses he would attempt to place the tip on his wand on the onyx gem. "Alohomora!"

Time was a curious thing when one was focused. True focus gave one the ability to let the minutes slip by without a thought. It was the exact situation that Galton found himself in. There was no room for error, exact, surgical precision was required to properly decorate a cookie. Like casting and maintaining a protego, letting your thoughts wander would lead to a weakened defense, ultimately ending in failure.
That wasn’t to say he wasn’t still aware of the surrounding happenings. Galton just didn’t pay them as much mind as he usually would. As per usual, a group of Hogwart’s students always created a fair amount of commotion - he just wasn’t interested in it today. Cookie related conversations, however, were interesting.
Xailah was what Galton pictured when he thought of the word “mature”. Perfectly collected, seemingly talented both academically and athletically, and a prefect to boot. There was possibly only one person Galton knew that would give Xailah a run for her money, and that was her (and his) friend Meenauh. Young Lansdale felt much out of his depth trying to entertain the senior Lion. But while some maturity related inadequacy would be felt, Galton had an unwavering confectionary confidence. He may not have always been the most put together but he could explain the pitfalls of caramel creation half asleep.
And maybe because of Galton’s view on Xailah, as she spoke the words made him consider his behavior on a much larger scale than he normally would. Maybe it was his energetic nature that let words pass through in ear and out the other without any real consideration normally. ”No offense taken. I… Mmm-“ the last bit sounding more like the sound one made as they savored a peppermint. He paused considering an explanation about his demeanor. ”Sweets and treats deserve proper respect. While I’ve not worked with cookies as a medium much, the decorating component isn’t too new - from that I know you can’t rush the creation. You can always rush once it’s ready to be eaten.” He would return the lioness’s grin with his own in kind as he picked up the cookie he’d been working on a gave it a wiggle. It was nearing perfection.
Perfection needed to be guarded though. The cookie would be placed back on the table, and a defensive arm would be placed around it between it and Alan. His dueling partner would be a welcome sight, but the spilling of drinks would not be. It raised concerns beyond those of cookie safety. Alan was far from a clumsy individual, unless all their dueling practice had been a facade.
”Oh, Alan hey watch i-“ Galton’s reply would get cut short by the chaos of magic. Smoke and a cracker jinx. It was an opening Galton would have expected in a duel, not here. Smoke wasn’t too much of an issue for the teen, but the crackers had been. A stunned hand would reach around the table, trying to grab for his edible artwork. Only fragments would be found.
In some ways he was lucky for the smoke, it would conceal the tears that began to well in the corner of his eyes. Not from the pain, but grief. It was a crime to ruin something so innocent and perfect. Something that would have tasted so good. Ruined. He scooped the ruined fragments into both hands. He was surrounded by two prefects, he would have justice, right? “Alan… Xailah - it’s ruined. They, they can’t do that! Help.” His words waver as they came out, his sorrow would be palpable.
Rising to his feet he made a beeline towards the assailants. He would drop a fragment of the cookie in front of Xailah and continue on. Cookie crumbs that once took the form of an ornate present would lay on the table, icing smeared every which way. In Galton’s simmering rage he would completely miss the fancy new box that Howie had found.
“Ey! Hey - explain yourselves. That’s assault and destruction of property!” He would yell at the destructive duo while gesturing at his shattered cookie.
