Winnie and Pu Pet

Attending school at Hogwarts was a dream come true for Winnie, but it also meant leaving behind the large number of farm animals, dogs, and cats that she had grown to love. She had begged her father to let her take one of the cats with her, but he had simply rolled his eyes and claimed that they were barn cats and the barn was where they belonged. He had also told her, if she wanted an animal so badly, she could save up for it herself. Winnie had never felt quite so gutted before. There was no doubt that her father knew it would be difficult for a first year student to save up enough galleons to purchase an animal. Unfortunately for him, he had underestimated Winnie. With enough galleons to purchase an animal of her own, she arrived at the Magical Menagerie with a triumphant smile on her face.

At first, she was amazed. There were so many cute little animals! She gazed in wonder at the large snakes, which apparently she wasn't allowed to purchase... That was fine, they needed to find a home that suited them. Oh, and the spiders! They were such lovely little creatures. They looked soft to the touch. Winnie was tempted to reach up and let one crawl over her arm, but she didn't want to upset the nice shopkeepers.

The rats, lizards, and frogs were also sweet, and Winnie stopped by each of the shop's corners to say hello to all the cute little friends. She wanted to take all of them home with her, but it would be impossible to take care of so many animals. Unless you owned a store like this, of course. Besides, Winnie already knew the kind of animal she wanted, or rather, when she had written her father to tell him the grand news, he insisted that she only bring home a cat, because apparently that was the most 'muggle' pet available, and he would not have his daughter owning anything else. As per usual, it was useless arguing with him.

The cats seemed to be spread out throughout the shop, laying in various beams of sunlight, high places, or meowing at various customers. Winnie wanted the cat she selected to want to come home with her. She wanted to be selected by the cat, not the other way around. So, she sat down in the middle of the floor, to the annoyance of a few customers and waited.

It wasn't long before a beautiful red tabby jumped off a shelf and pranced it's way over to greet her. She tilted her head, a small smile playing on her face. "Hello there, lovely." She said as the cat mewed back at her, bumping her leg with the top of it's head. "You're a pretty colour, aren't you?" She cooed, stroking between the cat's ears and then down to his chin. "Such a nice orange coat... Just like a little Pumpkin." The cat chirped back at her, the soft lull of a purr vibrating through it's body as it kneaded her lap with it's paws. He climbed into it and curled up.

Winnie sat petting her new friend for a little while, smiling softly to herself. She knew the little guy was the one, and already had the perfect name for him. Before too long, she was carrying him up to the store's counter. It was 11 galleons well spent.
