The Lady of the Wood
Thread intended for the top earners (Ravenclaw) the month of June.
Aug 8, 1:50 p.m.
Vladimir Athanatos waits at the edge of the forbidden wood. Well known by his contemporaries as a blight in this school, a title the strange teen has taken on with callous pride. He is known to keep to himself for the most part less his friendship, rumored affection for a one Marion Davenport of Slytherin and of course the infamous, late Victor Moore who died last year around this time.
Over the past year the Ravenclaw has had several brushes with death -- the Hogwarts Express incident over the winter where he was was beaten unconscious and then thrown from the train being the most public. He had spent weeks in St. Mungos the weeks following although nobody ever asked why. He looked far from fragile, yet a series of rather mundane albeit damaging injuries laid him up for months. In truth he was held there for weeks in addition, a curious specimen of study. The terrible truth of the matter was -- it was the worst thing that could possibly happen at that given time. His curse, the one that Victor shared with him was on full display for medical minds who were allegedly curious for a cure but he knew what was really going through their heads.
This blood was a fine weapon.
A truth he was well aware of, his blood more... durable than Victors, it resisted the light and it was getting stronger. His willful attempts to gain the truth, to find a cure were stymied by a look-alike in the Owlery. He was attacked by someone who appeared to be the late Victor Moore, his one time enemy and his one time friend. He should have fought back but he was in a state of shock, a friend back from the dead.
Victor Moore or at the very least who had taken Victor's form was no friend of his.
The Ravenclaws were right, he was doing something in the Owlery. The Owlery was his hiding place, his long-term hidey-hole. While others sent letters to their mothers, their sisters, their friends, he was hiding his blood in the crates. Packages intended for people who would not pick them up, always careful to never use his name to avoid the curious rummaging of his peers. Bottles of blood, protected from the light that would subsist in pure darkness. Blood he had performed experiments upon, a curiosity as well as a need. He never did find a cure. Now that the darkness had reached his core, there would no longer be time to learn.
He never did learn who had taken his blood but he could make a guess as to why. The greed of men is great, a weapon that simply consumes and subsumes without regard to what is there is a terrible thing to harness especially when they know by dawn's early light the darkness would fade and die.
Yes, he needed the hags alive in case he could convince them of a further mercy. In service to them as an errand boy. Howard White, contracted with the wrong crones had taken a phial of his blood, a specific request for the dhampir to make. There was a level of uneasy certainty that he was either sent by the hags or by a third party that had not made itself know just yet. He doubted the later because the timing was off, the only ones that knew of his particular affliction were Victor, Marion and the nurse at the time. The inconsistent darkness suggested that it was not just his blood that was being spilt on these grounds.
"You can come out," he called. He did not bother to look, he already knew. He knew that he was being followed but he had never addressed it before now. "The woods are dangerous today, so your journey must end here."
He did not reply or wait for an admission from the onlooker. In fact, he was grossly unaware of the fact that any watcher already there would not be alone and that there were others on their way. This was not the work of a mere singular stalker (looking at you Aida if you are there) but rather a more organized effort.

| Interacting with @Slyvain Wyllt and Vladimir |When at first Pericles arrived at camp, he was happily caught up in all its excitement and promise of fun Summer activities. He was thrilled by the living arrangements, eager to spend time with his friends (as well as making new ones), captivated with the opportunity to spend a season like a normal kid. As soon as he settled in to sleep however, he felt a budding paranoia rear its head from the depths of his thoughts: was camp safe? Hogwarts had been plagued with misfortune for the entirety of his tenure, and Ravenclaw had endured a horrific attack at the end of the year. Was it possible that things would be even more dangerous here, outside of those protective walls, exposed on the unpredictable grounds? He ought to have been worn out by the day's excitement, but between the unfamiliar bed and this nagging anticipation, Pericles had hardly slept. Then the days went on with little to no eventfulness. No madmen storming the cabin, no curses, no fires (shockingly). All this fun in the sun was getting to his head. Swimming, eating, playing silly games and sharing scary stories, it was one of the most surreal Summers of his young life. How could he not be lulled into a false sense of security? August eighth arrived.
As the brevity of the letter set it, Pericles went through several stages of dread. It felt akin to taking great lengths to avoid a certain person, only to come across them in the grocery store. You believe by moving to another town, you've managed to be rid of them once and for all, yet there they are: buying the last can of beans when you so desperately want to cook chili. There was no getting away, was there? First came the shock, stinging and deep. From there it permeated into panic, which denial tried softening to no avail. The letter seemed all too obviously related to the eerie encounter in the owlery, no doubt the subsequent attack in the Ravenclaw common room as well. The dead have risen... the supposed "Vic" which was said to be dead, but purportedly attacked Vladimir Athanatos? And have rushed into the darkened wood... the Forbidden Forest. No, not there. Not again. Seek the black raven for he has secrets you might learn on this day, was the more mystifying line. Did raven imply Ravenclaw? They were technically eagles, but he wasn't about to argue semantics with the sender. This was the least of their worries if "black" meant "thoroughly cursed" as he assumed. Eyes wide and aglow with anxious energy, he approached cabinmate Sylvain's bunk, stopping on seeing he too held a letter. It did not matter that Wyllt was no longer a prefect. The absence of a badge did not make him any less dependable, nor less trustworthy. Pericles murmured grimly: "If we hurry, we might stop him."
Pericles was running, though this was clearly not one of his usual morning jogs. Leather hiking boots, black travel pants, and a perfectly uninteresting brown shirt compiled his hastily-donned outfit. His wand was clenched in one hand, the envelope in the other. Panic grew as others trailed in the same direction: other Ravenclaws, de ja vu. Thankfully, they would find their mark just within the forest's edge, rather than deep in its belly like before. He was heard before he was seen: "The woods are dangerous today, so your journey must end here." Peri's stomach sank. It was Vladimir, the woods, the Eagles, all again. This could not be a repeat of last time. "It is dangerous, which is precisely why you shouldn't be here either." His tone was not as demanding as it ought to have been, but instead wrought with nerves and a soft, pleading will to see everyone out of here before they got maimed, this (more than) questionable character included. "Vladimir, please... something is wrong." He held up the letter, one of many mailed to his housemates. "If you didn't 'invite' us, who did?" Cautiously, his stare swept over the trees ahead.
Pericles had learned a valuable lesson last visit, and this time, he made sure to look up as well.

Hogwarts with Lucifur on her side seemed to be brighter and happier than ever. Until a letter written for her arrived. A really bizarre cryptic message. She could barely answer the Ravenclaw dorm riddle, how come this mysterious person who apparently knew her name somehow had this amazing idea that this kid would know what that means. Some people just did not know how to write like a normal person. The dead have risen? Sounded like Hogwarts was in the middle of a war with zombies. Aurora was not sure if the brain eater creature existed in the wizarding world, but that was the best thing she could come up with from the peculiar letter. The darkened wood, probably the forest at night which would be a problem remembering what had happened the last time in the Ravenclaw Tower, let alone the dark forest. Wait, does that mean the forbidden forest? This was no plant versus zombies game, some sunflowers, pea throwing plants, and nuts would not save her from whatever these creatures would be.The dead have risen and have rushed into the darkened wood. Seek the black raven for he has secrets you might learn on this day.
Abandoning the letter for a while, she raided her own trunk and search for the most comfortable clothes that will cover her entire body, just in case the dead was the implication for the dead shadow spiders or maybe worse like chocolate hater monster. A black jacket was on her shoulder, hopefully, thick enough to protect her from any bites (obviously will not). Not wanting her new furball addition to the family to get injured, she wrote a letter to her frenemy, Violet Carrington to take care of Lucifur for a while. Maybe there was still some spare of light inside of that particular Slytherin, Violet would never hurt a cute white cloud, most importantly, Lucifur. Even if she refuses, the glaring girl doesn't have any other choice but to open a pet daycare. Aurora grabbed the letter, and her sling bag, wore the usual black boots, dropped her cat with his food in front of the kelpie cabin, then rush to the forest edge. Scared. Of course, she was. But she couldn’t help to obey the curiosity that told her to go and see what was going on. Possibly trying to help in any way she could.
On her arrival, a familiar voice could be heard from the distance. "Vladimir, please... something is wrong." Oh no, no, no, no. “P-pericles?” is he in danger? Is this Vladimir guy trying to do something bad to him? Her overthinking brain started to kick in, her heart dropped from her chest, the image of the older boy getting hurt rang the emergency alarm that made the girl think she needed to step in to help. To stop prevent him from getting hurt. Whatever it takes. Running in great speed, Aurora placed herself in front of the silver haired Ravenclaw, trying to appear so tough, when the truth was she wanted to pee her pants. “D-don’t even think to hurt my pe-“ Stop it Aurora, not the best time. “friend”

What do you do when this is the inside of a letter that was marked with your name? Lavinia’s plan was to not do anything, she believed that this was just a way to get her in danger. The thing was that when she woke up on that morning of the 8th, she didn’t just see her letter, she saw identical ones for Gabriella and Aurora. That made her nervous, why had they all 3 received a letter? Lavinia had opened it but was yet to decipher the message inside. She was too scared to, she didn’t want to know what it meant because then she might go too deep and follow the letter. As much as she didn’t want to, her eyes shifted to the words and started figuring out the riddle. The dead have risen and have rushed into the darkened wood. Seek the black raven for he has secrets you might learn on this day.
The dead have risen, who is dead, is someone coming back from the dead, is that even possible. When are we even reading this, you’ll go to deep; no I need to figure this out, I’ll be brave like I should be. You know that you’re not brave, you’re afraid of it all. I can do this; no you can’t. Stop trying to figure it out; I should figure it out though, what happens if someones in danger? While her brain battled it out, her eyes continued looking at the words. If she could just get her doubts out of her mind then she could solve this. The darkened wood, is that the forbidden forest? Yeah I think it is, we should go there; no we are not putting ourself in danger, do you want to be the next one dead? No but I’ll be careful, we can’t get anywhere if we are just afraid of it all, we have to take risks to be able to overcome this. Are you sure that it needs to be overcome? It’s keeping you safe; it’s also keeping me from living.
She only read the first sentence and even if she did read the second one, she wouldn’t understand it. The secrets line would have stuck out to her and caused another battle of her brain. Finally, she pushed the thoughts of fear out of her mind and walked towards the forbidden forest. It wasn’t a normal thing that she would do but, she needed to do this for herself, she needed to live and take a risk for the first time in years. This was her chance to face her fears head on and just figure out what the letter was about. She was just trying investigate the letter and hopefully nothing would go wrong at all.
As her feet found there way to the forest, she started having more doubts but keep her feet walking. The good thing was that it wasn’t dark outside or else she wouldn’t have come at all. This was probably the most ominous thing that she had ever done yet, she received a letter so she would attempt to investigate it. She didn’t much else going on today and if she didn’t do this then she would regret it for a long time. Upon arrival of the forest, her eyes locked onto 3 individuals. Fellow quidditch player Aurora, prefect Pericles, and Vladimir. She had never met Vladimir before but had heard so much about him, barely any of it good. Looking at them all she asked the one question that could make her much more or less scared than she was right now. With a little quiver in her voice the rising fourth year asked, “Why are we here?”

The young wizard could hear his pulse drumming through his ears as they walked briskly out of the cabin area. "You seem to know more than I do about, well all of this," Nell spoke with a small giggle. Cade kept silent for a moment, how could she think of this as something to laugh about? Usually Cade wasn't a serious person but in this instance, his face remained oddly stoic. "Where are we headed?" Nell asked, prodding him for answers.
Cade paused just long enough so Nell could catch up with him and they could walk side by side. "You had the same message I did and I'm beginning to think a lot of students from our house have too." Cade's brown hues locked onto hers for a moment before falling back to the tips of his Chuck Taylors. "It was a riddle. Someone has returned from the grave... and they're headed into the forbidden forest," Cade bit his lip. At least that's all he could make out from the obscure note. It held only enough information for the young wizard to get the gist of this call to action. "I have a feeling this has to do with the accident on the Hogwarts Express last winter. Were you there?"
Cade could still hear the jarring noise of a boy's head slamming abruptly on the compartment door, leaving a trail of crimson in its wake. To be fair the first year hadn't completely gotten over the trauma of it all. But he wouldn't voice this to Kell. She could have had her own nasty experiences in Hogwarts, something worse than being attacked by a cowboy group that called themselves SCAR.
"C'mon, I see the others by the lake!" Cade urged his companion forward and they joined the others. Cade could recognize his prefects and a few others who stood across from... it was him! The boy on the train Cade assumed had died. He was thrown off the train unconscious. He looked very much alive now and Cade wondered to himself whether Vlad was the dark raven with answers or the dead that had risen. He hadn't exactly received a guidebook upon his first day at Hogwarts describing all the horrors that had happened while he was obliviously purchasing his school supplies.
But why were they cornering Vladimir like he was a threat? Last Cade knew the boy was a student much like themselves. This wasn't right. Cade would furrow his brows quite confused. But he couldn't help being on edge, his hand creeping into his pocket, fingers curling around his wand. "This can't be good," Cade whispered towards Nell.

Cade gave Nell the answer, and realized even though he knew more than her, he didn't know much about the letter either. Nell kept her eyes on her shoes, thinking. "I have a feeling this has to do with the accident on the Hogwarts Express last winter. Were you there?" Cade asked her. "Oh, I wasn't, no," she answered quickly. She decided not to ask him more questions. For now.
The pair walked more until Cade spoke out, "C'mon, I see the others by the lake!" Nell followed behind, picking up her pace. She had been out of the loop all year, and now wasn't the time to stay out of the loop. She recognized most of the students, some being Prefects from Ravenclaw. What Cade had said earlier was probably very correct: a lot of students from their house had gotten the same letter. The Ravenclaws were cornering a boy, a boy Nell hadn't seen much. She vaguely remembered seeing him a bit before the winter holidays but not after. And then it hit her - could the boy who was being cornered be the victim of whatever "accident" Cade had mentioned? Nothing was certain though.
Out of the corner of her eye, Nell saw Cade reaching for his wand. Figuring he knew better, Nell did the very same. "This can't be good," he whispered. She nodded with a furrowed brow. If the boy was absent from school after the accident though, wouldn't that mean he probably died? The gears turned in Nell's mind, thinking back to the line in the letter.
The dead have risen and have rushed into the darkened wood.
Well, would this be it? "This is a weird question, but did the boy they're cornering ever, well, die?" Nell asked Cade in a whisper. Because if so, the letter was quite possibly playing out right before their eyes.

As the letter lay unfolded in front of him on his lap the images of several doomsday scenarios flickered quickly through Sylvain's mind. It were almost as though someone rapidly shuffled through the slides of a viewmaster, but instead of somewhere beautiful or exotic the memories of smoke and fire accompanied the pain associated with every other image. Was House Ravenclaw destined to repeat the blunders of the past or would they run to the side of this 'Black Raven' to seek clarity?
As Pericles approached Sylvain, the lad would blink the foggy afterimages of their previous encounter in the Dark and Perilous Wood away with deliberation. It seemed Dralt had received a copy of the letter too and was now calling upon him to run so that they might face whatever danger lie in waiting for them. Sylvain hoped that they could overcome it together, and so he set his mind to overcoming the dilemma. It gave him an uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach to think of the forest, but he would remain composed long enough to be helpful.
With a slight nodding in agreement, Sylvain would move to assemble his gear. First pulling a long sleeve button up over his sleeping shirt before wiggling into a pair of jeans by hopping up and down on one foot then the other. Once he had his wand, boots and satchel properly fastened to his form he was more than ready to go. Running through a mental checklist one more time, the Eagle prepared for the worst yet hoped for the best. Before exiting his cabin, intent on leaving some sort of sign or trace of where the two pre-third years had run off to, Sylvain scrawled a message on the back of a spare bit of parchment.
"Back by sun down, send help into the forest if I'm not back by then." Maybe Flash, Marcus or Willow would return in the nick of time to notice his clue. He hoped that if this were the case, they wouldn't worry about him too much. There simply wasn't time to warn them of the danger otherwise. Although it felt odd writing a note that in the best case scenario was never to be discovered, it was at least slightly better than disappearing without a trace.
Only a few meters behind his colleague and role model Pericles, Sylvain shifted the weight of his belongings around so that it encumbered him as little as possible. Focusing on the smallest details was how he had managed to keep himself alive in the past so he certainly wasn't intent on changing the habit now. Because haste had bitten him in the past, Sylvain opted for smooth. He had learned that when working with danger, smooth meant fast. Pushing past Cade Darkbound and Nell Zoldak with an incredibly polite for the circumstance, "excuse me," Sylvain made his way towards Pericles, Vladimir and Aurora to better hear their discussion.
Standing beside the three, Sylvain wouldn't fear Vladimir by now. Reading the contents of his diary had alleviated any lingering doubts or paranoia. Doubts and paranoia that he could now see surrounding the shady upperclassmen like a shadow in its own right. Now that he had reason to believe Athanatos, there was only sympathy for his condition and a desire to better understand what it was exactly that he was struggling to face on his lonesome. That and confusion on who had sent them each a letter.
As Pericles pleaded with Vlad for answers and as Aurora interposed herself to protect her friend Sylvain stepped forward to meet Vlad halfway. Fishing something from his pack, Sylvain produced an item that belonged to Vlad. His journal. "No more secrets Vlad." Sylvain said while returning to the brooding figure what was rightfully his. Looking as cool as a cucumber on the surface, Sylvain felt his heart turn like an outraged sea, boiling quietly beneath the collected facade he presented. "You're not as alone as you make yourself out to be." He looked back to Pericles, Aurora and any of others as they arrived. He knew them as kind, accepting, and understanding people so he spoke clearly for all to hear.
"If you truly want to save us from whatever darkness lurks the castle grounds, then you need to teach us what you know." He was intent on giving him a chance to profess to those who would listen to him. An opportunity to once more stand alongside his classmates as an equal instead of the monster he had been made out to be. Perhaps even a shot at finding peace should his hourglass have become emptied by the flow of mercurial quicksand. "Besides, we both know you can't stop all of us." It was meant to be a jest rather than a threat. He would give the callous kid a half grin, the usual shit-eating grin that conveyed he felt their anguish but wasn't going to let it bring him down.
Syl would extend his hand as if to form an alliance. "Let us join you and face this darkness together. Once and for all."

───Winnie had been having a bit of trouble with her memory these days. To her, it felt as if she was drifting through an unending hallway. Some doors would open, and she would be able to enter through them, to access the memories. Others she could manage to peer into the keyhole, to catch whispers of what was. There were doors that simply would not open for her, and times that her words trailed off, and she felt lost, anxious for recognition that never came. Her mind eventually helped her to fill in the blanks, using the pieces to fill in the blanks and forming what seemed to make the most sense. Sometimes she relied on the help of her apparent boyfriend, Mathias Pride. It was best for her not to think too much about it.
The letter had brought with it a new kind of confusion. Her name had been crossed out. Her letter was discarded like an old napkin outside. Regardless, it had been found and given to her.
She could not fathom why. Why had the mysterious courier tried to toss her letter aside? To try and exclude her from whatever this was? The other Ravenclaws had whispered stories of unspeakable horror, of train crashes and students perishing.
If they had begged her to stay behind and bask in her ignorance, their advice was quickly ignored. Winnie wasn’t going to let her housemates walk into this alone. Not without her help.
As useless as she might have been, she was a spare, an extra body, an extra wand, extra muscle. There was surely something she could do to help.
'The dead have risen and have rushed into the darkened wood. Seek the black raven for he has secrets you might learn on this day.'
Dead rising? Darkened woods? The meaning was not clear to her. She knew the letter meant the forbidden forest, as for the black raven… Who was he? A member of Ravenclaws own? Perhaps it was that Vlad fellow that others had whispered about. Hm.
She prepared herself as quickly as she could, wearing what she considered to be rather plain clothing; a dark green cardigan, a green scarf, leather ankle boots, and a cream coloured floral print dress that didn't seem too bright and out there. She had braided her long hair into two plaits and hung over her shoulders, cascading down her back. Underneath, she wore a pair of black bike shorts. She had also quickly packed her leather satchel bag with the letter, her wand, and a bottle of water.
Either way, she would follow them across the grounds and near the danger zone that was the forbidden forest. By the time she had arrived, Vladimir, Pericles, Aurora, Lavinia, and Sylvain were all currently present by the time Winnie had arrived, and in her confusion, she stormed over to the treeline and set her gaze on her housemates.
"What's going on here? What's the meaning of this?" She would ask both everyone present and no one in particular. She dug into her satchel and retrieved her letter, which was still wrinkled and a bit damp from the morning dew. "Everyone got one of these, right? Why the heck was mine all wrinkled?!"

Banner Credit: Winnie HarperThe nights in the Thestral Cabin had been restless, as if River’s discovery of a mysterious letter on the 8th of August wasn’t uneasy enough. Reading the riddle written inside, images of previous events flashed in her mind. The dead have risen, that encounter they had in the owlery, the darkened woods forbidden forest, spiders, living woods, they’d been through this before. The black raven... Vladimir perhaps? There was something about a curse, darkness and whatnot. Her mind was spinning faster than ever as she quickly hopped into the first clothes she could find in her bags before she hastily made her way out of the cabin.
A little ways ahead she saw two familiar people headed out towards the edge of the forest. From what she could tell one of them were Pericles, he was relatively easy to identify from his light hair. They must have gotten a letter too then? Or maybe they were just going on a little stroll.
River tried to catch up by following a light jog, though as she made it to their location there were other students also present. Vladimir, being one of them. Not that it was a surprise. Looking around this scenario reminded her all too much of that previous time they’d followed into the forbidden forest, and some had barely made it out. If they walked in there this time there was no guarantee they’d all return in one piece.
Looking around it seemed they’d all gotten the weird letter in the night, “So what? We all got the same letter?" , she asked the general group of people present. “That’s not suspicious at all… Why’d someone invite all ravenclaws out here?", she added, turning her eyes to the woods hoping she’d see nothing but trees.
Sylvain was offering to help Vladimir out, something which River really didn't know how she felt about. She wasn’t about to give up her own life for someone she barely knew, as well as someone who’d seemingly only brought bad experiences to her life so far. Still, she was curious. Curious to know what was waiting out there. Curious to see what all this talk of a curse, and darkness, and rising of the dead was about.
And even if she wasn’t ready to risk it all for Vladimir, she had friends here who she would risk a lot for, and if they were about to traverse the forest, she wouldn’t let them go without her.Action: Arriving

On August 8th, Bloom had received something so unexpected. It was a little note, but it wasn't from a secret admirer as she had hoped. Instead, it was a riddle. Looking around, she wondered if she was the only one who received a letter like this. Bloom read it over and over. She had no idea what it meant or what in the hell was going on. What did it mean the dead had risen? What was it trying to share?
The only thing she could figure out though, was the fact that it had to be in the Forbidden Forest. The darkened woods was a dead give away.
Bloom grabbed her belongings, including her wand and made her way to the Forbidden Forest. As she got closer, she noticed that she was not alone. There were some other students who were in the forest as well. And from the looks of it, they were all in Ravenclaw.
What's going on? she thought, wondering what brought everyone together. Was there something about the happen?
As Bloom got closer, she saw a familiar face that everyone was speaking towards. It was a student from her year, Vladmir. Unlike Winnie who called out what was happening, Bloom stayed quiet and listened to her peer's voices.
Sylvain began to suggest that Vladmir did not hide any secrets. What secrets was he hiding? Bloom was completely lost, but hopefully, someone would listen to Winnie, and fill her (and anyone else listening) in, too, on what was happening in the most dangerous part of the land.
