Emerald and Pumpkin

It had been several weeks since Winnie and Cosmo first met, and the two girls had bumped into each other a couple of times. Within the brief conversations that were held, Cosmo began to understand Winnie was a very busy individual, particularly regarding a boy she kept bringing up. She desperately wanted to hear more, especially because Winnie had seemed very passionate, and so when Cosmo learnt of Winnie's new pet, Pumpkin, she suggested that both their cats might like to meet while they had a picnic. Winnie agreed, and arrangements were made for Sunday at lunch.
So now here Cosmo sat, happily waiting in the courtyard for her friend. It was a truly gorgeous day, with the sun beaming down onto the cobbled walls and floor, all catching and holding the warmth. Emerald was gambolling happily around Cosmo's legs and she smiled, watching as the rapidly growing kitten explored. Life since easter holidays when she brought Emerald home had been filled with such a new kind of light. Being able to watch her kitten grow and learn and play was a delight, and Cosmo loved to curl up at night holding Emerald in her arms. Everything seemed almost perfect, although it had been a concern of Cosmo's that Emerald might become lonely while she was in classes. Her solution had been that if Pumpkin and Emerald could be friends, they might keep each other company while their people were busy.
As she waited, Cosmo engaged Emerald with various toys she brought, dragging a string across her legs and around her back for the kitten to chase. There weren't crowds of people, but she didn't want Emerald to wander too much before Winnie arrived. Everything was set up, and Cosmo looked around at her work. A checked blanket was spread beneath her, and cushions from the dorms were laid across it. Cosmo had wondered whether she was really allowed to take them, but figured if they were kept clean then no issues would arise. Before coming outside she had yoinked some food from the great hall and stored it in a little basket; dips and cheese and crackers, as well as some cranberry cordial in a flask. Now all she had to do was wait.

───Winnie had spent the past thirty minutes preparing to meet her new and dearly treasured friend, Cosmo. She wanted to make a good impression on their first formal ‘friend date’, after all. Making friends had never come easily to the redhead, so she appreciated the young Gryffindor’s company and the open ear she had so gracefully offered her. Winnie had even written to her mother and asked her if she could send a gift for her new friend, which Saoirse was more than happy to do. The gift was meant to remind Cosmo of home while she was at Hogwarts. It was a dog plushie, a chihuahua specifically, it was around 30cm in size, perfect for night time snuggles. The Ravenclaw had carefully wrapped it in brown paper packaging and tied a ribbon around the box.
Now she just had to focus on what she wanted to wear. She had carefully selected a daisy print pinafore and had paired it with a light yellow t-shirt. She had pushed her long copper hair back with two simple golden daisy hair clips, just above her ears, with one on either side of her head. Ever since the two had saved a nest of baby birds together and collected wildflowers for her mother, Winnie had been thinking of the sweet Gryffindor girl. She had told Cosmo about her crush on a certain Jack Burnett, but not all the details, and my... Did Winnie have more details for her. She turned and placed her hands on her hips, staring down at the orange tabby that was currently curled up on top of the carefully embroidered quilt that covered the mattress of her four-poster bed. "Excuse me, sir." She scolded, walking over to the young cat and picking him up. "I told you we have a play date today. You need to stay awake." She chuckled softly, her fingers brushing through the tabby’s soft fur. She listened to the rhythmic humming of his purr as she held him against her chest. "Alright, time to go!" She used her free hand to grab the gift, which lay at the foot of her bed. She tucked it underneath her arm before starting her descent down the spiral stone staircase that leads to the Ravenclaw tower.
The beautiful sunrays almost instantly put Winnie at ease as she exited the dark shadows that seemed to flood the castle. The enormous stone walls had always made her feel uneasy. She was in her element outside. She spotted Cosmo sitting on a lovely checkered blanket, and thankfully just in time, as it seemed Pumpkin was growing rather impatient. He leapt out of the redhead’s arms and landed gracefully at the edge of the blanket. The cat sniffed the fabric curiously. He peeked his emerald eyes curiously up at Cosmo and offered the girl a greeting in the form of a ‘mew’ and a gentle headbutt against her knee. Winnie’s lips curved into a wide grin as she took a seat, using one hand to drape her long copper hair over her shoulder so she would not accidentally sit on it.
"Everything looks wonderful! Thank you so much for inviting me." She grabbed the wrapped present and set it directly in front of the brunette. "This is for you... I wanted to thank you for being my friend." A soft blush graced her cheeks, the rosy hue giving away her secret concern that her friend would not like the gift.

Cosmo looked up at Winnie's approach, and a huge smile lit her face. Winnie was dressed beautifully, as she had been every time Cosmo saw her, and walking out of the shadows into the sunlight with Pumpkin in her arms she reminded Cosmo of a greek goddess. Pumpkin himself was a gorgeous cat and Cosmo offered out her hand to him, delighted he had said hello. Emerald, who had been distracted investigating a fountain until this point strutted over, regarding Pumpkin with bright clear eyes. This was the first time she had met a cat not from her litter, and her fur was puffed up in an attempt to make herself look less like a kitten. It didn't work, she just looked like a ball of fluff and Cosmo laughed at her, before looking back at Winnie; content to let the two cats slowly get accustomed to one another.
"Thank you for coming! You look wonderful," she replied, taking in her friends outfit more closely, "I think it's a crime that the school makes you wear the uniform instead of your own clothes, everyone in class is missing out." Cosmo was grinning cheekily, but when Winnie presented the gift her mouth popped open in shock. "Oh that is so sweet!" she cried, immediately leaning forward and taking Winnie in a gentle hug, "but I didn't bring you anything, you better be on the look out Winnie, no one can out gift me."
Cosmo gently unwrapped her gift, a curious smile in place. The minute one fluffy ear was exposed she let out an excited 'Oooo!' and tugged the Chihuahua from its wrapping right into her arms. "It's perfect, thank you so much," she looked at Winnie with sincerity, and placed several big kisses on the cute snoot. "I've been missing Ruby so much, this is so thoughtful!"
Before she could get too sentimental Cosmo settled the plushie in her lap, and poured cordial for both of them into two tall glasses. Emerald came over to sniff the bottle, before turning back to Pumpkin, and Cosmo just sat a moment watching them gamble about with one another before handing Winnie her glass.
"They look so happy together, maybe if they play often they can wear each other out," she chuckled, remembering how just this morning Emerald had stolen a sock and batted it around the dorm room, much to the delight of all the other first years. Cosmo took a sip of her drink and felt the sweetness rush down her throat. "So how's life been since you got Pumpkin? How's that particular boy you mentioned," she wiggled her eyebrows at Winnie, and leant back ready to be given a complete update.
