Event Blossom Ball - Trial of Hecate

Finally, the last trial of the Blossom Ball. At this point, Ami was feeling both physically and mentally exhausted. All that running, thinking, sprinting, pondering, dashing, and contemplating had taken a lot out of her, and she was ready to just head back to her dorm and sleep it off. She hadn't even seen Scott, yet, but she was sure he would understand. Or maybe the two would find an abandoned classroom and they would tiredly watch their cats bat their paws at each other until they both passed out from exhaustion. Either way, she was ready to get this whole trial thing over with.

The instructions given to them were quite simple, and Ami was pleased that this trial wasn't unnecessarily complicated. Lumos, which was a basic first year spell that she had used quite frequently; Reparifarge, which was a Transfiguration spell and something she had also learned during her first year; and a babbling beverage, which she didn't recall ever hearing about. It wasn't her fault that Hogwarts had gone through so many Potions professors! It was downright detrimental to her Potion-learning experience. But, she figured that since it was all first year material, it wouldn't hurt to give all three a shot.

Entering thread from the Hermes
As she approached the next trial, she wondered what it was all about. The surrounding area was a little darker than the friendly, beautiful vibes of the Spring Festival and it was not making her comfortable. However, she could handle this, right? It was good to try and get over the fear that she had. This was helping. The trial of Hecate, it seemed, was basically an exam all about spells and potions.

Serena had successfully managed to avoid her brother for most of the ball, which was rather pleasant. However, she could not help but wonder if he had bothered with these trials - and more than that, how he was doing in them. He would have hated most of them, surely?! She could not imagine him enjoying picking flowers, for instance. A part of her was definitely curious to see how he feigned in this challenge though. For a guy that bragged all about how amazing magic was and how much superior it made him, she had never really seen him study or be all that good at magic. She wanted to know how he did but she could not see him around.

In all honesty, she was not exactly studious herself. Rolling up her sleeves a little, she folded them carefully as she prepared for the trial. Of course, she did not really need to do this as they did not interfere but somehow, it mentally was helping her to feel more prepared. Serena exhaled a little as she did this. For some reason, she was a little nervous about attempting to show off any sort of magical proficiency.

As soon as she stepped up for the trial, she pondered the options. Lumos. That sounded like the safest bet. After all, it was her favourite spell - mostly because it was the one thing that could safely destroy the dark. This spell had literally saved her life on multiple occasions, she knew that. There was no other choice, she had to start with this. Pausing, she wondered if it was possible for her to cast this wandlessly. It was a 'wand-lighting charm' so perhaps not. Either way, she pulled out her wand and attempted to show off her spell casting abilities.

If she did not succeed or was asked to continue, she would try casting reparifarge. Of course, it would be really disappointing if she failed the lumos. The doubt in her made her consider just quitting but failing to cast a very important spell was all the more reason that she should attempt the second one, right? She had to succeed. She needed to be better at casting magic, it was that simple. If she succeeded and was simply asked to continue, she would jump up and down with glee before 'aheming', attempting to calm down and trying to cast reparifarge. Either way, she attempted to show off her transfiguration skills - or, in this case, transfiguration skills.

If she failed at both of those or was asked to continue, there was only really one option left for her. Potions. Her ability to cast magic ought to be far better than her potions, so she was definitely hesitant. If she had succeeded the past challenge and was simply asked to continue, she would grin some more and happily oblige. Nonetheless, she would attempt to answer any questions, speak about the potion or whatever else the task required.

Entering from Trial of Hermes
The Trial of Hecate gave Dolf the chance he'd been waiting for to use his wand. It was hard to miss on the way back to the Underworld, and since he'd already been through two of the Hero Trials — Orpheus and Hermes — that night, why not bring it up to three? First his strength of will had been tested, then his athletic ability, and now it was time to prove his magical skill.

As he approached the Trial, Dolf tugged his wand from its spot on his waist, where, for lack of a better holding place, he'd been forced to push it through a belt loop and let it hang for the evening. Not wanting to lose it during the race, he'd taken it off in the Trial of Apollo; here it was his key to success. Like before, there was a boy in the front of the small crowd of participants explaining the rules. It struck Dolf suddenly that he was extremely lucky to know English. Most of his schoolmates did, as far as he was aware, but these Trials would be much harder to navigate if you didn't understand any of the rules. Pushing that thought aside, Dolf tuned back in as the objective was laid out. Again, it sounded simple: the contestants had to demonstrate one out of three branches of magic. Again, he was sure there was a catch.

They were allowed to try more than one thing, so Dolf figured he'd better try all three. The tasks were pretty basic, but if (for some reason) he failed at one of them, he'd have two more chances to complete the Trial.

He started with Lumos, the simpler of the spells. Tightening his grip on his wand — taking a deep, concentrated breath — Dolf swished the end through a loop in the air and said the incantation. "Lumos."

Next was the Transfiguration spell...er...the Untransfiguration spell. Dolf picked up one of the pomegranates in front of him and turned it over. He couldn't see any glaring deformities that needed Untransfiguring. Then again, he'd never actually seen a pomegranate before tonight. Maybe this wasn't how they were supposed to look? It didn't matter. The boy held it at arm's length and aimed the tip of his wand at the fruit, setting his shoulders in preparation. Transfiguration was always tricky. But if he remembered everything right, there shouldn't be a problem. He waved his wand and declared his intent with purpose. "Reparifarge!"

His last task was potion-making. Dolf looked over the array of ingredients before him, trying to recall what went into a Babbling Beverage. This one was all plants — sort of fitting for the Blossom Ball. He picked out a few valerian sprigs, found the aconite, and finally grabbed a stalk of dittany. Seeing that others were waiting with their ingredients as the boy in charge came around to each contestant, Dolf decided to follow their lead. He spread his ingredients across his workspace, positioned his pomegranate, and waited to be assessed.

[1] [2] [3] [Hades] [Hecate] [Orpheus] [Hermes] [Persephone] [Apollo]
Her eyes had to adjust from the lighting of the Hades Trial. This area was better lit and set up with tables, one of them topped with a prominent centerpiece of Hecate’s three-faced mask. She brushed off her chiton before walking closer to the host for instructions, crowd of students preparing alongside her for the next challenge.

“I’ll attempt all three.”

Despite its perceived simplicity, Lumos was a finicky spell, actually. Too little concentration and the spell fizzled away. Too much and it left a hole in both wallet and wand; its radiating heat notorious for melting out magical cores. Phaedra could even attest to that one. Nevertheless, it was a spell she had nearly perfected and used to the fullest, even in duels—a daily tool that she couldn’t imagine life without. The notion of failing now was so inconceivable that Phaedra whipped up her wand with utmost confidence and smirked. “Lumos.”

With that out of the way, Phaedra took a step closer to the table. It was covered, most distastefully, in many pomegranates, and beneath the pile she could discern ingredients for a Babbling Beverage Potion. The potion could wait for last. Transfiguration had been a favourite class of hers—once, years ago—under the guidance of a certain professor she’d considered awe-inspiring. Wherever he was now, she’d cast as if he were right beside her. Holding up her wand, Phaedra pointed it at the fruits, visualisation clear as she began the incantation.

“Reparifarge!” she enunciated, white light shooting out from her wand. Take that, Devil fruit. And that wasn’t just in reference to Greek myth either, but also a deep dislike of the very food staring her down. Phaedra waited expectantly to see if the spell worked. She’d transfigured more difficult subjects, right? If successful, she would stand ever so taller.

Last task. Putting her wand away for now, Phaedra took the clumps of valerian sprigs, dittany, and aconite root (carefully—aconite was no beginner plant) and began preparation, ensuring first that the cauldron was temperate. If everything went accordingly, she should get a nice, deep red potion out of this. Watching the colours mix and settle was therapeutic almost, despite the mass recalling going on in her head to not somehow screw this up. What Trial awaited her next?

Event Blossom Ball - Trial of Hecate
[will format later, wanted to get this posted before the deadline]
The second-to-last Trial which Lucia and Carolyn would complete, and it appeared to be the easiest one. There were a whole lot of pomegranates, though. What was the thing with pomegranates? Didn't they stain everything?

Lucia wrinkled her nose when the boy running the trial mentioned the word 'witchcraft', although she kept quiet. She'd never liked that word, even in the context of 'witchcraft and wizardry'. In Muggle literature, 'witchcraft' was a word used for things that muggles just couldn't explain with their so-called 'science'. That would have been fine, except that they thought that witchcraft was a negative thing, that it wasn't something anyone wanted to be associated with. They didn't know what they were talking about, of course, but it annoyed Lucia that they thought they were so clever and special, with their 'technology' and their 'science', and yet they couldn't fathom how something as simple as a wand-lighting charm could be carried out.

Speaking of a wand-lighting charm, that was the first task. Lucia readied her wand and held it in the air, hand steading. She'd gotten quite good at spells during her time duelling. "Lumos," she said clearly, focusing on her wand. When she was spellcasting, Lucia often found it easiest to simply block out the world around her. Even a charm as simple as Lumos could go wrong if there were too many distractions.

The next task for the 'heroes' was potioneering. It wasn't Lucia's best subject, potions, but it was one of her good ones. Quickly, she gathered the ingredients needed to brew a babbling beverage and focused herself entirely on the task. For a moment, she could almost imagine that she was back home, baking with Briar or Willow or even Ebony. Not Rosa. Rosa had almost been beheaded at her last job due to her lack of cooking skills, which in all fairness weren't that bad. Ebony also wasn't a very good cook, and the Foxes often ended up just eating sandwiches or cheap pizza from a Muggle takeaway. Lucia had inherited her love of cooking from her father, Antony, and if she closed her eyes for a moment - just a tiny moment - she could nearly pretend that it was him next to him, instead of Carolyn. Her father. It hadn't been until the Orpheus trial that Lucia had realised how much she really missed him. There were two giant holes in the two youngest generations of the Fox family, and only one of those could be filled: Luciast father's. It could be filled, if they tried hard enough, if they looked hard enough. Maybe they could find him, maybe they could bring him home. Lucia blinked away the tears which were embarrassingly close to leaking out her eyelids into the potion, and completed the rest of the task in intense concentration.

The third and final Hecate task was another spell. A little les simple than Lumos, but rather easy all the same, though Lucia's grades in Transfiguration usually averaged an 'acceptable'. The Hufflepuff girl collected a pomegranate, wondering what they were really, and took it over to where she and Carolyn were working. "Reparifage," she murmured to her pomegranate, then smiled at Carolyn. "Should we move on to the next trial?" she asked. "Then we can go back to the ball."

Finally! This trial was second to last for the girls and Carolyn was feeling quite good about that. In no way did she regret going for the trials but she had to admit, she was getting a bit tired at this point. Especially after the Orpheus trial. That one was especially draining…not physically but emotionally. This one however, sounded rather easy to her. Well not easy per se, even here anything could happen and spells could go wrong but the tasks seemed fairly straightforward. It was a test of their abilities. “These are all things we learned last year. Surely we will manage to score at least one, right?” Carolyn asked her partner hopefully. She was quite happy with her academic standing but mastering the theory and a bit of a practice never guaranteed success when it came to spells or potions. Mistakes were made even by the greatest wizards. “Let’s try all three?” She suggested boldly as both girls moved towards the table.

And so they did. Carolyn would first concentrate on the two spells, while making sure she was aware of her surroundings at the same time. That was what their professor taught them. Focuse on the wand movement and proper enunciation but always stay alert. Distractions or unexpected interruptions could come at the spell caster at any given moment, which could end up in disaster. The potion part that followed, was much easier for the Ravenclaw. While she preferred spells to potions classes, she understood their importance and it reminded her of cooking, which Carolyn liked to do. It still required her to pay attention and yet it could also feel strangely relaxing.

"Should we move on to the next trial?" A familiar voice reached Carolyn’s ears once she was done. “Yes…let’s do that. I’m really looking forward to some dancing soon. I say we deserve it.” She answered with a smile.

Hecate, the goddess of magic. Everly's knowledge about her was limited, as was her knowledge of Greek mythology in general, but she did find the goddess of magic endearing in a way. Hecate seemed so mysterious and, well, magical, and besides, Everly loved the name Hecate. The trial was to perform and demonstrate one of the branches of magic, fitting for the goddess it symbolized. And the choices - spell, potion, and transfiguration. Everly could choose to perform one of them - the Wand-Lighting Charm, the Babbling Beverage, or Reparifarge, or, for bonus points - Everly perked up at the mention of this - they could also choose to perform all three. Everly recalled all three of these, and knew she could perform them. So why not try for all of three? she figured.

Was it necessary, though? Everly knew that she could be a blatant overachiever sometimes, and while that could be both a good thing and a bad thing, she was unsure. Either way, extra points were extra points, and besides, at least she had a back up plan just in case her original route would fail.

Just before it was her turn, Everly would find herself running through all the knowledge and information in her head. The incantation for Lumos, the wand movement, what to focus on for Reparifarge, the ingredients for the Babbling Beverage. Everly was more concentrated on this trial more than the others, for some mysterious reason. Perhaps it was because this trial had nothing to do with physical capability, nor with quick wit nor fast actions. It was intelligence and magical talent that would be able to allow Everly to pass, and for this reason, she was more worried for this trial than the others. She knew that she most certainly had the capability to pass. These were things she knew, she had learned. Everly just had to focus, and do it correctly.

The trial of Hecate had been set up in such a way that it was an easy pass and go one. Three branches of magic were available, though the boy understood if you didn't want to take them all. In a rush it would be hard to do so, the excitement of another trial only steps away. There was something in the air that night however, that made most want to stay. A fair and competitive spirit from most. Most intentions were good and Alec admired it. Competition was healthy every once in a while when in the right set up. With Hecate Alec felt there was a chance for everybody to do good. Three branches meant three ways to shine. He hoped all competitors would realize that. Before starting he wished good luck to all participants. It was a lot to try, much less succeed.

After performing her first spell of Reparifarge luck would be on her side with Lumos. When casting Lumos Scarlett's wand would light up with certainty and ease. A perfect show of how to do such a spell. It was obvious she showed confidence in this area of magic. Alec's eyes would pick her out of the few. She had special skills.

Time would pass and her luck on the spell would seem to be forgotten till she was delivered an envelope by owl just before the end of the summer. Rafeal seemed to have an air of confidence as he walked up to the trial area. Or at the very least look more cool and collected compared to other ballgoers. He would do average at Lumos, before making his way to get his potions knowledge checked by Alec. It wasn't obvious what happened. He'd messed up terribly and Alec could only blink and stare at the other as he listened to his answers. Whoever Rafa had been around at that moment would have been left to gawk as they heard such absurd, or at least badly worded answers. His mistake was only a casualty however.

He'd likely soon forget it as the summer holidays came to mind. At least not till he received a white package on his bed(in the gryff second year boys dorm) just before school had come to an end. Littered in flowery designs, it would contain both a pity chocolate frog and a book. "Quidditch Through The Ages" there would be no message. But it was possibly a gentle encouragement to focus on what he was good at and have some fun in the midst of summer studying.

The words of the answers to the knowledge of potions would flow out of the girl's mouth easily, getting every single one she said right. She seemed to be quick witted and fast. Alec had to remember that. He'd have to ask her for help in potions. Even if he wasn't sure how relevant that would be when it came to things there was a chance she wouldn't know.

She knew her wand, and her wand certainly knew her. The light would glow from the tip of her wand with little to no effort. Lumos, though a simple spell was harder then it looked Alec would smile her way when she caught his eye. Another one that had stuck out.

A lot of people seemed to have luck with Lumos that day. Even this foreign student. The incantation of the spell was said just right. His wand would light up, glowing and thriving within the dark shadows that was the underworld. I took Alec a minute or so to catch this one, but once he had a thumbs up was given his way.

Just before the foriegn student had to leave he would recieve a flowery envelope. There it contained a thank you for coming to the ball and participating in the trials. Before a small rambling in the words would come about how good Rudolph's Lumos was, and finally he would receive a chocolate frog.

Thank you for participating!
I had such an amazing time reading everybody's posts! I apologize for not being able to write paragraph replies for them all and only getting to crit successes and fails. It's been fun being able to work on this trial, again thank your for participating and by that giving me the chance to do this.
