PERSONALITY ✧・゚: *✧・゚:*
independent-minded but rebellious
opinions: something niamh has far too many of. she values uniqueness of thought and is not easily swayed by other people. she gets a thrill out of being contrary just for the sake of it. in her mind, authorities are meant to be questioned and rules are meant to be stretched. like a water balloon. how hard can it be pushed until it pops?
truthful but insensitive
words flow out of niamh's mouth like a river— there's no stopping them from coming. whatever first appears in her mind automatically spills out into the conversation without much regard for how it could impact others. niamh is a terrible fake. her need to be genuinely herself at all times makes it unappealing for her to conform to social niceties. why do those things even exist? the question perplexes niamh.
energetic but lacking commitment
niamh has a lot of energy. usually too much. like an overstimulated puppy, she bounces from idea to idea and person to person. niamh goes with the flow without effort. plans are a waste of time to her when she can think on her feet. nothing compares to the adrenaline of living in the present.
loyal but prideful:
from her family, niamh was always taught to value the ones she is closest to and to protect them. to be chivalrous and to be kind. to hold blood relations close and to defend them with all that one has. this penetrated into niamh's value system from a young age. her worst nightmare is to see someone she cares for in distress but not be able to reach them. on the flip side, niamh is terrible at accepting help herself. she has placed herself on a high pedestal, overestimating her own abilities in all spheres.
outgoing but confrontational
niamh would describe herself as a "people-person." she loves people. all the people. the more friends and connections she has at any given moment, the better. talking, too. niamh is anything but shy, not from conversation nor conflict. she is not one to back away from possible issues.
optimistic but naive
niamh is naturally a "glass half full" kind of person. she dislikes dwelling on negative emotions. new possibilities energize her. anything new, really. new people, new places, new foods to try. the sense of hopefulness and mystery brought on by fresh experiences entices her to jump in.
APPEARANCE ✧・゚: *✧・゚:*
A girl of average stature and build, Niamh is not someone who is easily noticed in a crowd. She stands at just under 4'9 in height with pale skin and rosy cheeks that are prone to sunburn during the summer months. None of her features are especially noteworthy. Her nose is small and ever-so slightly upturned, her eyes are a silver-blue color, and her lips are thin. Niamh's hair is honey-brown and reaches the middle of her back. It is usually loose and windswept or kept in a loose braid with strands falling out in different directions.
BACKSTORY ✧・゚: *✧・゚:*
Niamh Ophelia Quinn was born on December 14th, 2010 in the University Maternal Hospital of Limerick, Ireland. The cold glare of the industrial lighting illuminated the delivery room, causing the white walls to appear even whiter than they actually were. Fresh, Clorox-scented air drifted in through the small crack in the door. (The doctor had neglected to close it fully after returning from her most recent trip to the bathroom.) Delicate raindrops collided with the small, two-pane window; the only reminder that nature was still near despite the harsh surroundings.
The slimly-built figure of a woman laid on the medical bed, her long, dark hair dangling neatly off the side. It was almost over. One could tell from the doctor's expression of concentration. The man standing in the corner paced stiffly. He did not want his wife to see how his legs trembled slightly with each step. She was giving birth. His pre-parental panic did not need to disrupt that. His thoughts drifted back to the children at home. Aoife, age 6, and Conor, age 4 had been left in the care of their Nana for the day, and, knowing her, they were probably at least on their fourth square of fudge by this point. The shop had been left in the hands of his brother, who was trustworthy for the most part. If any village resident was to desire general supplies, the general store was there to provide them.
The calm voice of the doctor speaking was then interrupted by a loud cry. The baby had emerged healthily and was placed in the woman's arms.
Niamh's health did not dwindle as she grew older. She was a spirited child, always chasing after her older siblings and asking to join in their games. Her favorite pastimes were going to the park, playing jump rope with her sister's friends, painting rocks in the garden, building forts in her parents' shop, and making up stories with her best friend, Emily.
Even if her siblings were busy at school, Niamh was never without company. Often, she would go with her parents to the general store that they owned. It wasn't the option she preferred but she tolerated it because it meant that she would be able to play with the various products that lined the shelves in great quantities. (Her mother would never let her near the saw and knife section which deeply disappointed her. Those long ones looked like they would make excellent stand-ins for alligator teeth)
Toddlerhood only lasts for a few years. Then one has to face *school*. Niamh was not the type to be afraid of school. The idea didn't phase her in the least. She knew that Emily would be going there as well and she looked forward to meeting the other kids and potentially making friends. What could possibly be bad about that?
The social aspect of school definitely lived up to her expectations. Niamh connected with the others easily and quickly became a well-liked, or even *popular* member of the class. However, the actual class part was a struggle. Niamh often found herself getting into trouble on a weekly basis. It was just so hard not to speak out of turn or crack a joke during class. Sitting at desks all day was boring so of course she would find a way to make it more tolerable. Besides, most of the other kids benefited from it just as much as she did. (Well, not counting Sarah. That kid was an insufferable prick.)
The summer of 2018 was a big one for Niamh. A new ice cream shop opened in her village, her parents agreed to let her go out alone, and she finally convinced her sister to teach her how to do a backflip off of the big rock at the beach. There was one major accomplishment, however, that she wasn't even aware happened— her first instance of magic.
It happened in the most mundane of settings. One moment, she was sitting on the cobblestone wall outside her house with her neighbor and best friend, feeling the slightest bit hungry. She rummaged around in her pocket and found a small, slightly crushed chocolate kiss. How did that get there? Weird. Niamh chose to trust it and popped the candy into her mouth.
THROUGH THE YEARS ✧・゚: *✧・゚:*
2022-23 : Niamh had an uneventful first year in all honesty. She spent it like a kid in a candy store: breathlessly running from place to place full of excitement but devoid of deeper thought. It made sense for a muggle child who had just discovered that magic was real. There was a whole lot of "Ooh shiny! What does this thing do?" and not much learning from the consequences of her actions. If only childhood could last forever...
Summer 2023... Aoife declared her intent to attend art school in London which caused a rift within the family. Niamh's parents, having grown up and lived in the same town for their entire lives, did not want their eldest leaving. What they wanted was to retire and have their eldest daughter take over the family store. Aoife had other plans. This, understandably, led to a dispute and that dispute led to Aoife packing her bags and leaving for London without informing or getting permission from her parents.
After that, Niamh's parents were much more protective over their younger two children. If they lost their non-magical daughter to the big city, what would happen to the younger one who had much more of a troublesome streak and was attending a school called something to the likes of hogwash. Niamh was informed that she would not be returning to Hogwarts in the fall and would instead be enrolled in a muggle senior school for year 8.
This declaration brought up mixed feelings. Sure, she was happy to see her muggle friends again. However, Niamh was a witch and she needed to be where the magical people were. It was incredibly unfair that her parents just snatched her from the potential adventure which she had barely even begun to experience. She was supremely annoyed.(
2023-24 : Niamh joined muggle senior school as a transfer student in year 8 with no issues. However social and academic reintegration was much harder. Emily, who was her best friend, now had a boyfriend who was the only subject of her attention. She was never as close to any of her other friends but they had drifted apart even more over the past year. Classes were hard because she missed a year of material (she was clever enough not to be held back a year but not ambitious enough to put the needed time into studying.)
Instead, she spent a majority of her study time preparing for the Hogwarts advancement exam. It was hard given that she did not have access to magic. Niamh was a hands-on learner so she benefited greatly from casting practice. However, the rules set in place by the Statute of Secrecy and Decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery made hands-on work out of the question. Instead, she spent hours tediously memorizing incantations and wand movements using a random pencil or any random oblong object she could get her hands on.
Summer 2024 : Aoife returns home from her first year of art school but her parents are still mad. Furthermore, Aoife was mad at Niamh because she thought it was unfair that her younger sister was allowed to attend an extremely non-traditional institution while she was not allowed to attend a normal, muggle university which her parents could visit regularly. It was out of desperation for peace that her parents allowed both daughters to attend the schools they wanted. That was, if Aoife got a "respectable" job over the summer and, for Niamh, if she could pass the advancement exam to move into her correct school year along with also maintaining good grades in muggle school. Lo and behold, both girls were able to pass the criteria so Niamh was set to return to Hogwarts.
