Reducio The Ghost of Ricardo Benvolio Chiadovini The only thing that would incur a greater fear or hatred in the mind of the typically fearless Pureblood would be the second return of a father that he thought to be dead. Admittedly in the past Leonardo's fear had been of his father in corporal form, but now that it is clear that his paternal figure is no longer of this world the only thing remaining for him to fear is his father returning to him in incorporeal and immortal form for the sole purpose of tormenting him with further 'lessons' and 'expectations' from beyond the grave. He does not fear what such a ghost would do to him, for he knows as well as any other that ghosts are able to affect the world no more than a burning morning dew can sustain itself in the broad sunlight or the afternoon's heat; he fears the idea that his father's ghost in pseudo-physical form may somehow feel inspired to linger for the sole purpose of doing nothing more but irritating him until he too goes to his grave. A cruel twist on the tale of Hamlet. Ironic. A Human Puppet With an incantation of Riddikulus, the joints and control of the ghost suddenly vanish and stiffen into the impression of a marionette. Conducting movements with his wand, Leonardo finds himself able to pantomime 'fond' memories from his childhood past so as to embarrass the ghost and to bring himself endless amusements. Now at last he may lecture this brainless and non-physical shell of the man who for so long treated Leonardo himself as a puppet. Vengeance is sweet indeed.

Reducio Peace & Well-Earned Rest Life lived too long makes one weary and ultimately in search of the thing making such a life worth living. For Leonardo, such thoughts have passed through his mind to be considered and debated with consistently for years now. Though not wearied entirely of life, still there are weights that burden his mind often; thoughts of more philosophical nature that perhaps have no answers at all whatsoever to be had. What he desires most, in the end, is resolution and closure. Resolution and the feeling of a job well-done; the feeling that one may have as they sink into their bed after a long and difficult day but with the knowledge that they have accomplished something noteworthy. Something that has made all the toil and the hard-work worth it in the end. Something that... he feels that he is not worthy of earning yet. Not yet deserving of it, perhaps, because something is holding him back; something that is keeping him as an unwilling yet stalwart soldier in a war with no victors and only losses on his behalf to be had. Or, perhaps, because he simply has not found that thing which can make his life worthwhile... Unless he already has, and it is simply that he does not yet see the means towards the ends of finding his peace.

Leonardo grew up in a household which bore several generations of Chiadovinis in its walls at any given time. He knew his great grandfather when he was a young boy no older than the age of three, though at that young age he did not quite comprehend the concept of death when both his great grandfather and great grandmother passed. However, when he was older and around the age of fifteen or so, his grandfather passed and his grandmother followed when he was 19. Their deaths had been peaceful, but the remaining family--his father, his mother, and himself--had been there to bid them farewell as was to be considered somewhat of a tradition. It was an exercise in mortality, and it had been executed well.

Were it not for these experiences, it was likely that Leonardo still would have become aware of the skeletal creatures that drew the carriages of the returning Hogwarts students. Death was something that while Leonardo did not obsess over, he held a respect and a deep understanding for. Death, just as much as life, was integral to the human and the mortal condition (being and part-being aside). Being a seer, particularly in a family dedicated to predicting misfortune and detecting omens that would indicate harbingers, caused him to become aware of these realities. He could not sugarcoat what could never be fully sugarcoated. It was not fair to the one that it would be a lie to, and it certainly was not fair to himself.

Reducio Scents of Cryptic Mysteries Untouched ~ Bitter Incense: Primarily used to help him focus when trying to encourage visions to surface, Leonardo's home can be filled with such powerful incenses when attempting to drown out the smells of other things that he dislikes. ~ Burning: Wood, incense, paper... the scent of burning and its versatile smells never cease to ground the Seer in any situation. Indeed, even the burning of skin and clothing brings back memories of his first duels at Hogwarts, and these are near and dear to him despite its ominous nature. ~ Coffee: Brewed strong and black, coffee is another grounding scent that is one of few capable of 'calming' the Seer when frustrated or exhausted (which is more often than not). ~ Haunted Fog: The crisp air of early evening and pre-dawn mist is a breath of freshness that the Seer greatly appreciates. ~ Horse Hair: The rustic smell of this animal dredges up memories that Leonardo can't really place. It is a familiar one, though; and one that brings a fleeting sensation of lightness for some strange reason. ~ Lavender: A sweet-smelling flower and also used as an aromatic therapy, this scent began to fill the house more frequently after the birth of his child, Dante. Leonardo associates it with his son in particular. ~ Lotus: A similarly sweet-scented flower, Leonardo find the scent of black loti in particular the most delightful. ~ Old Parchment: Whether it be books or the random pieces of paper upon which Leonardo scribbles some remote ramblings or prose, the smell of parchment is electrifying to the intuitive Seer. The older the raw paper, the better. ~ Owl Feathers: The object of interest that triggers this appreciation for the scent is none other than Macbeth himself. Leonardo's beloved owl is fond of rubbing on his face on the frequent; it would be impossible not to inhale the scent of the owl's clean and pristine down feathers at least once on some occasion. ~ Petrichorous Soil: Possessing a soft and musty scent, the smell of the outdoors and a peaceful woodscape after rain just as much as the scent of freshly disturbed grave dirt, Leonardo finds himself drawn towards this strange earthy nature. It is oddly familiar, almost like an old friend.

Reducio To Become as Like a Wynorrific Lie Itself When first added to the potion, the fragment of his self will immediately sink into the mixture but the potion will almost similarly instantaneously curdle into ink-looking particles around it. The smell emitting from it is that of a midnight breeze passing through a slightly misty woods; the faint smells of both a sweet death and crisp fog cloy to it strongly. Upon shaking up the mixture, the potion becomes a glossy jet black and curdles further with almost feather-like shape and texture to the individual 'curds'. The smell is now that of the intoxicating scent of burning, though what material is being burned is unclear and whether it is that of mere wormwood or of something more grim in nature is greatly left to the imagination of the one preparing the potion. Upon drinking the concoction, it tastes strongly of a powerful yet bitter red wine mixed with hemlock. There is a twist of sharp rumlike appeal to it upon total imbibement, but as it goes down there is a sensation of deep and aching numbness that spreads from the heart outwards as if being fractured into countless slivers of self. All connected, and yet none able to fully come together into a coalesced being. This feeling will persist until the end of the transmogrification, after which there is a brief sensation of weight in the heart before whatever claws had clenched the vitals in such a way reluctantly release.

Early Years

Leonardo Ricardo Chiadovini, born in light of the union betwixt Ricardo Benvolio Chiadovini and Guinevere Veronica Greene in Venice, Italy on April 11th, 1977; a child of Monday, fair of face, on Easter Monday of that year. A proud union this was to be, a mixing of two Pureblood families, one from England's roots, and the other from Italy's. The Pureblood boy was named Leonardo Ricardo, after the Chiadovini tradition of placing the father's name as the child's middle. The name of 'Leonardo' would come from the family's first Patriarch, Leonardo Gian Chiadovini, with Ricardo prophesying that his son, like the Great Father of the lineage, would mark the beginning of a new era of the ancestry which had come before him.

An only child, for political reasons that Leonardo would not come to understand until he was more knowledgeable of the world around him, the Pureblood boy grew up sheltered and without any friends outside those of his father's, who even then did not spare the young boy a glance. While his life was not extravagant, the boy certainly did not want, and Guinevere did her best for her son who shied away from attention but seemed to desire something elusive beyond the walls of the estate.

Leonardo found his friends in the form of his books. It was one of the few Muggle things that Ricardo did permit Leonardo to possess; books which the boy enjoyed more than any company and books which helped to keep him hidden from the tumultuous household, part and parcel of Ricardo’s troubled psyche. Guinevere taught Leonardo to read and write while his father was still pursuing the slowly dying yet lucrative work of a Naming Seer and performing interpretations and readings on the side. The boy found himself sneaking into his father’s office consistently in order to steal books that were low enough to the ground for him to reach without climbing and with the absence of Magic which had not surfaced for him at that time.

Though his comprehension of deeper or darker tales as the sorts of Bierce, Dickens, Hawthorne, Irving, and Melville were not completely developed, there was something about the way these words were written as if they were a world of their own, a world so startlingly and beautifully different from this world of Leonardo’s own, that he read them ceaselessly. To him, these words were more real than his own, and he often had two or three of his father’s books hidden in his room to peruse alone.

Years passed, seasons came and went seamlessly with almost no passage of time discernible. Leonardo’s Magic had revealed itself, and the letter of acceptance had been delivered to him, and he had discovered his wand and collected his supplies to prepare for his schooling years. The year was 1988 when the boy had received his letter. Before departing, Ricardo offered one of few father and son discussions. It was more of a lecture in actuality, but Leonardo’s gaze never revealed any inflection of his interest or lack thereof. He was told of beings called Muggles and Mudbloods, and of Traitors and Half-bloods.

He was warned of them, told of their impurity compared to his own, reminded once more of his honorable heritage...

And then, for the first time, Leonardo did not feel his father’s eyes upon his back. For the first time, Leonardo felt that he had opened the cover of another story that he had never had time to read; his own.

First Instance of Magic

Being a Pureblooded lineage, elitist and throughly bred for success and nothing less than success, the Chiadovini family tree expected Leonardo to procure his first magic at a young age, far before the mark in which a normal child was expected or even encouraged to reveal impulsive childish Magic. There would be disgrace if the youngest boy in the lineage thus far tarnished the name by the lack of Magic, disgrace which the family had not had experience with for generations.

Unfortunately, Leonardo was a late bloomer, and even with Ricardo surrounding his child with things of magic and Pureblood doctrine, Leonardo, an already stern child by the age of six, had no unusual magic to his name; not a single peculiarity of the environment of situation, not a anger-inspired magical storm. It dawned on Ricardo, the boy’s impatient father, that there was the slightest chance that his son may not have inherited the magical gene. Such selfish worry in his mind, he continued to observe and watch...

Only three days before Ricardo was prepared to disown his son, when the boy was nine, Guinevere had a mother to son conversation with the infuriated Leonardo, who had been upset that he had not conjured anything and was longing to make his father proud. Guinevere attempted to coax anything that she could out of Leonardo, be it a small movement of a feather quill, the levitation of a book... anything which could remove all doubt. Overwhelmed in a fit of madness, Ricardo stormed into the room, having procured a crystal vase and in his fit of insanity prepared to wreak murder upon anyone in sight.

As Guinevere leapt to her feet to soothe her husband, Leonardo turned and glared in rage, his stormy eyes flashing with the overwhelming desire to finally do something to please his father once and for all. No sooner had the thought been sent out, the vase exploded in his father's hand, raining tiny fragments like snow upon the ground in a glittering powder and reducing the room to silence.

Thus, Leonardo's heritage was secure. Yet, he was still tested for a while longer by his father, who did not rest until his boy had also revealed the marks of a Seer. When something seemed incorrect, or the atmosphere did not bode well, Leonardo would hesitate. Uncanny intuition which marked him as indeed one of the lineage and finally sated Ricardo once and for all. Now there would be no more tests. Leonardo was of the heritage now, and just like his father and mother, his father’s father, and his father’s fathers before, the invitation to the school arrived on the Seer’s eleventh birthday.

School Years

He grew up and was educated as a member of the Slytherin house during four of the seven turbulent years of the famous 'Boy Who Lived', though Leonardo cared not for vainglorious show, neither from the loudmouth Gryffindor nor from the rival of his own house. Every member of his family, from his father's plentiful side and his mother's diverse one, had belonged to the rank of Slytherin, and it was his duty, as his father had always said, to make the Chiadovini tree strong and honored.

Thus, these seven years swiftly passed, with no hitch, save for the rising legends of the evil of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. After graduation, Leonardo moved away from Italy, and came to live in Inverness Scottland, near Hogsmeade, but far enough away that he would not be bothered by pesky individuals other than the nosy Muggles. Dedicating himself to dueling and living a quiet life, perhaps Leonardo was not quite as quiet and conserved as he thought himself to be.

Return to Hogwarts & Suspicions of Foul Play

With the rising tension between him and his slowly fading father, and his mother unable to join a side, Leonardo was eager to keep life’s difficulties at arm’s length... until he began to hear the rumors circling around Hogwarts. He did not read the Daily Prophet, but word travels quickly, and suffice to say, sparked a mixture of curiosity and intrigue in the mind of the 1995 Slytherin graduate.

In December of 2020, a position in the role of Professor of Astronomy had opened up in the school of his upbringing. While he had no particularly strong or fond memories in that place, even Leonardo could recognize an opportunity when he saw it and he both applied for and received the position. Astronomy was something that Leonardo was well-versed in, a perfect subject to take the mantle of as an excuse to reach into the inner workings of the castle and the new generation on their own adventures. Perhaps he would not be one for socialization or camaraderie, but perhaps he could have a hand in preparing and enlightening students in the realm of astrological magic.

Unfortunately, as had been the case for many things in his life leading up to that point, his tenure there was to be short-lived. Were it not for the challenges that the school inflicted upon his decidedly antisocial demeanor and ability to humor the children that it was his responsibility to teach, he also quite suddenly began to receive highly ominous signs en masse as soon as a few months into this new and promising job; signs that he as both a Seer and an amateur Astrologician could not simply conjure the ability to ignore.

These signs would come to a startling head in the last few days of the school year in 2021 in the form of an ominous spread of the Tower, the Empress Inverted, the Hierophant Inverted, and Justice as the means to the end. While not totally clear as to their meanings at first, Leonardo would come to realize their meanings as he reluctantly returned to the Chiadovini Demesne in Venice, Italy to find that his father had met a shockingly unexpected and most curious end only a few days before his personal return on July 8th: July 5th.

While there had been some clues as to the nature of his death–particularly the cause appeared to be due to either potion or poison–the timeline leading up to and the events that could have happened during the time of death remained cloudy at best and downright cold-case-worthy at the worst. But, in the mind of the law, they did have at least one prime suspect; the son of the deceased, who as attested by his own mother had a cold shouldered relationship with his father and had at least a modicum of motive for wanting to commit such an act against the Chiadovini patriarch.

Thus began the investigations, which Leonardo would not see the end of for at least two years later…

The Pit and the Pendulum

Leonardo had been permitted to remain at his household on the Inverness highlands even during the proceeding investigations after initial assessments of his person and alibis in later 2021. It was determined that he was at least not the direct cause of Ricardo Benvolio’s death and would not prove himself to be a formidable threat in the foreseeable future [in fact, by nature, Leonardo presented himself as being highly agreeable and cooperative as was in his personality to at least pretend to be]. Yet even with the slight extension of his leash, Leonardo fell prey to a cage of his own making in the form of sensing the world compressing in around him in a fashion that not only crippled but crushed both spirit and willingness of flesh into an unrecognizable mangle of its former glory. Not that it had been present in the fractured Seer to begin with, that was, but it was now obvious that his ability to temper the mental weights that he placed upon himself in conjunction to the stressors of his current position in life was now succeeding in straining his usually admirable ability to take control and manage that which opposed him. His cold and calculated cunning and resourcefulness, for the first time, was not enough to rescue the Slytherin graduate from the roiling critic that was his own mind and the ghosts of memories that ran rampant through it.

It began small; a drink here and there, lethargy, a retreat from others if he could manage it in favor of reading his favored and most beloved books from mostly Muggle authors (for he was of the belief that they were much better storytellers than any wizarding author he had come across yet)... a retreat into a realm of non-reality that was destructive and isolating, a trip over the edge of a precipice that would lead to a Sisphysian crash when the bottom was struck fully and cruelly. It would escalate much more quickly; a pain that was so severe that it could only be dulled with the warm and venomous drip of a strong drink, the lightheadedness and euphoria that came with it as the world blurred and vision and Visions became indistinguishable from one another, a numbness that induced sleep and a further decay of interest in the outside world in favor of the marvels of worlds so far beyond and far away from where fruitless mortal tasks were done. Stories that seemed more and more true as hours and days passed in the mind of the Seer, stories that struck closer and harder to the heart than they ever had in the past and encouraged the pallid Leonardo to rid himself of that emotion through the practice of looking for the bottom of the next bottle and embracing the blissful dark that came with total dissociation from what was even at the tips of his fingers.

With the decay of presence in reality came the decay of appearance; what few times he took steps outside of his small house in grizzled visage, grim and ungroomed features that were dreadful and downright ghastly, clothes that while cordial and proper were disheveled and obviously uncared for, to face the clarity of air and the bright sunlight began to hurt his eyes and invoke dreadful headaches to the point that he wanted nothing more but to return to the shadow of his reclusive household. With the decay of appearance came the decay of emotionality and rationality; a temper already sharp now grew larger fangs, a rage simmering beneath thin and pale flesh now began to boil over. Leonardo Chiadovini had never been a kind man, but he had not been a cruel one either… yet this crumbling of the marble cliffside that was both sanity and inability to manage a life that had been unravelling at the seams for more than a few years now was reaching a crisis that led to cracks and exacerbations which would split and reveal the dark interior of a cave uncharted.

It was in this depth, this darkness which was hardly penetrable with even the brightest of arcane light, that she entered Leonardo Chiadovini’s life; and it was with her that the other aspect of the card drawing that initially foretold of this moment would result in further clarity.

Eviana Verity Udinesi

A daughter of a lineage dead in male heirs for over a century, her mother had refused to take her blood traitor father’s name in favor of keeping the famed family name of her own grandfather alive. It was a richly-branched Pureblood tree that had origins in Mother Italy since the late 900s in the founding of the city of Udine. Indeed, in history the Udinesi family had had connections with that of the Chiadovinis, though that had been generations ago according to both family’s tapestries.

Eviana first became aware of the Chiadovini situation through rumors, as it had become somewhat of a familial scandal within a few choice families that had kept greedy eyes upon the renowned Seer tree and were actively searching for ways to encourage their downfall or further scandal that would undermine their position. Inspired by this opportunity and unafraid of confronting the family tree now that both patriarch and inheriting son were absent from the immediate stage of Italy, the Udinisi matriarch and daughter spoke to widowed Guinevere [Leonardo's mother] about many matters pertaining to what was known of Ricardo’s death and most naturally of the condition of her son Leonardo and his relational status as an ‘available bachelor’ to be wed off for the benefit of the Chiadovini lineage and whomever was to be the fortunate Pureblood family to inherit him and the name in turn.

Well, this incident and heightening investigation into familial matters was not doing much to help the Chiadovini family’s cause now, was it? Scaring off other families and causing them to become suspicious of the lineage, this was thinning the pool far more than it already had been before, wasn’t it? Their families were intertwined once, bearing an allegiance to one another that was centuries old by this time… certainly they could be twined once again, couldn’t they? There was much more benefit in joining a union once again as opposed to struggling on the individual families' own, was it not?

Leonardo would require convincing, though. He had historically refused to allow himself to be used as a pawn in the way of marriage thus far in exchange for avowing to maintain connection with the family in some way; in this way he had remained distanced yet bound by his blood to the lineage if they commanded him to heel at the side of the family.

But, as Eviana would discover firsthand, her job had already been made much simpler by the fact that the allegedly hard-minded and stubborn heir was already pliable and soft thanks to the actions and vices of his own hand prior to her approach and introduction. Perhaps he had once been a clever and sharp man, perhaps at one point in time he had been an intimidating and menacing figure to behold and to interface with… but now he was simply a sad-looking remnant of that former bearing. A fixer-upper to some, perhaps, but a fixer-upper was not what Eviana was looking for. On the contrary, an individual as broken in will and in judgement as this man was just what she could make use of most.

All the easier to entrap him, and to siphon from him the rest of remaining willpower to resist and the family fortune that would belong to him by right.

How better to do this, then, than to produce an heir?

Macbeth, Leonardo’s faithful avian familiar, intercepted a letter that had come from the Chiadovini Demesne and delivered it to his master directly. After a few loving nips on the tips of his master’s ears and a few light screeches to force the man back into the waking world and out of the spirit-inspired darkness that had consumed him the night prior, the Chiadovini blearily collected as many of the scattered thoughts that were strewn through his mind and as many fragmented senses in his vicinity as he could before shooing the screech owl away and reading the letter that had been delivered him.

The contents of this small letter, sealed with the twin emblems of the Udinesi family and of the Chiadovini family (which should have been the first indication of something out of the ordinary to the usually insightful Seer), would cause the man’s complexion to pale to the truest form of ghost white as the paper fell from fingertips and fluttered to the ground.

Leonardo Ricardo Chiadovini,

With cordial address and great necessity, we request your arrival to the Chiadovini Demesne in Venice Italy as promptly as can be mustered for reasons of most celebratory and urgent nature. Do not concern yourself with packing for a multiple-day stay, the servants have already prepared a room and tailored clothing for you in anticipation of your arrival.

The nature of this summons, as you are likely concerning yourself with instead, is that of a birth in the family. Eviana Verity Udenesi of the genteel and honored Udinesi family has given birth to a son by your fathering on the first of this month, who has yet to be named in the Chiadovini tradition as is the right of you as the father to the boy. It would please me to see your face once more at the Demesne under lighter conditions, and to celebrate the joining of our two families once more after over 200 years of separation.

Because of this urgency, we will expect you no later than the 4th of this month, and will make arrangements to arrive at your household should you be unable to adhere to these summons. We have cleaned the fireplace in anticipation for you should you decide to utilize the floo system. Do not concern yourself with packing for a multiple-day stay, the servants have already prepared a room and tailored clothing for you in anticipation of your arrival.

The nature of this summons, as you are likely concerning yourself with instead, is that of a birth in the family. Eviana Verity Udenesi of the genteel and honored Udinesi family has given birth to a son by your fathering on the first of this month, who has yet to be named in the Chiadovini tradition as is the right of you as the father to the boy. It would please me to see your face once more at the Demesne under lighter conditions, and to celebrate the joining of our two families once more after over 200 years of separation.

Because of this urgency, we will expect you no later than the 4th of this month, and will make arrangements to arrive at your household should you be unable to adhere to these summons. We have cleaned the fireplace in anticipation for you should you decide to utilize the floo system. He much rather preferred attending the celebration of the Naming Ceremony on his own terms as opposed to having to tolerate any member of his family defiling the sanctity of his isolated home. As such, with much frustration yet great effort did he make preparations to venture back to Venice; he tidied his outfit and groomed his appearance greatly. Presentation, after all, was pivotal; he lifted his chin and raised his breast ever so slightly in the visage of confidence and self-assuration. Though his mind was still fuzzy, his grey eyes swimming with mistiness that indicated a hollowness of a person somehow divided from body, Leonardo did indeed make the time he was expected to arrive at the house of his birth… to confront his lover and to behold for himself the child that he had fathered.

A young boy.

A man of few words, in the days he stayed in company he was instead a man of none as he took to the grounds of the Demesne and divided himself from the eyes of both his mother and the Udinesi attendees. With a simmering gleam in his silvery eyes he regarded all who spoke to him with wordless tolerance but obvious vengeance. A tight smile, a curt nod and a respectful pardon was all that most were able to get out of him.

And yet, when others were not watching, the billowing velvet and silver-inseamed cloak could sometimes be seen fluttering behind the pallid man as he made haste for the Nursery. Only the ghosts of the house saw how Leonardo stood over the crib of his swaddled son with hands inside his cloak, perched as if he were a raven with his head tilted ever so slightly to one side as his greyish eyes roved and alternatively misted and hardened with indecisiveness and faint flashes of unclear Sights. Quiet words were whispered and dissipated into the quiet, haunted atmosphere; words only between Leonardo, this child, and whomever had ears to listen…

And the boy’s name would be, as designated by Chiadovini tradition and one of the first few choices that had been solely Leonardo’s to have in these matters: “Dante Chiadovini.”

Thus the child was christened; Dante Leonardo Chiadovini.
