Dmitri Jones massaged a developing crick in his neck as he strode across the duelling arena towards where he was supposed to be situated as a referee. It was—admittedly—not his favorite thing to do, this refereeing business. As the Vipers' captain, he wanted nothing more than to say to hell with it and fuss (read: micromanage) over his teammates in their ongoing duels, sharply criticizing their mistakes or knocking them down a peg when they do one or two things right for once. But it unfortunately was part of his job description to stay and watch other children fumble and screw themselves up with their own pitiful primary-grade spells.
Fun.
Though he was paid handsomely to do so, Dmitri figured he was under no obligation to pretend he liked it.
"Alright, listen up, because I'm not going to go over this twice." Once was one too many, if he was being honest. "Although... I wouldn't really be opposed if you failed to listen and broke the rules as a result. It would definitely make my life so much easier. In fact, I would send you a thank-you card for it."
Dmitri then proceeded to explain the general rules of the bout. "And lastly, please leave your petty teenage drama and emotional baggage outside of the arena, thank you very much. Though I don't expect much from you..." Each of the duellists will find themselves subject to Dmitri's signature cold gaze—the second-year duo representing the lions, and the mismatched pair from the Ravenclaws, "...I assume you have enough common sense and human decency to avoid letting your personal issues color your fights."
Clapping his hands twice, the Slytherin Captain would then demand everyone's attention, speaking in a clear, commanding tone. "That being said, do whatever you can to make your house proud. With Ravenclaw on this side, and Gryffindor on the other, let the duel begin!"

Rose got her butt kicked during her last duel. Her and Eyre had tried their absolute best, and yet none of their spells had seemed to work, except for the one Rose immediately regretted- the smokescreen spell. Both her and Eyre had gotten set on fire, knocked back, and hit with the curse of the bogies, choked on smoke, and Eyre had also thrown up slugs and gotten himself blindfolded.
All that to say, after getting a mutual stomping upon, they had both ended up in the Hospital Wing. The entire duel had overall favored one particular person- Lucia Fox. Rose hadn't really interacted with her before, but she now knew that she had some very powerful spells.
Rose was summoned up onto the platform, sticking close next to Eyre as the rules were explained and they were lectured about teenage drama. Oh, if Anastasia had been on the other side of the platform, then there would be some drama. But no, Anastasia was not a duelist. Thank god. The only other drama that would happen is if someone knocked Eyre out again. Thankfully, Rose hadn't been there to see it, but she was still vaguely furious at both Lucia Fox and Logan Baird for doing that. She knew it was irrational since it was a duel. Yes, she knew that.
Rose surveyed her opponents. Rose had known that the older one had lost her duel to some Slytherins, but she wasn't sure about the other one, who looked maybe to be younger than both Eyre and her. She couldn't stop her breath from shaking this time, as she tried to clear her mind.
Rose made eye contact with Eyre. "We can do this," she said, reassuring him as much as herself. Under her breath, she whispered, "I think I can, I think I can." It wasn't loud enough for anyone to hear except herself.
She angled herself, pointing her wand at the Ravenclaws on the other side of the platform, hoping with all her heart this would turn out differently than her last duel.

Tagging @Phaedra Stavrou @Rose Moon @Eyre ReevesCade entered the dueling arena with confidence in his step. Despite being a first-year, he'd proven himself capable during the Ravenclaw practice duels. The Ravenclaw boy climbed up onto the podium and faced the Gryffindor team. Cade pulled out his walnut wood wand remembering fondly how tentative he was using it earlier in the school year. Now all the wand movements and spells came almost second nature to him. It was amazing to see how much he had grown as a wizard in only a couple of months.
Cade nodded along with all the rules as Dmitri spoke. He'd heard them before. He never held a grudge while dueling before. He wondered what might have happened that the captain made a point to announce the ban for drama.
"Best of luck, Phae." He nodded to his partner. This would be the first time he'd duel with her. He'd seen her performance during practice and knew she was a fierce competitor. It made him feel a little better than she had so many spells under her belt. They could get this easily done if they played their cards right. Cade readied himself and raised his wand. "Let's show these cats how to fly."

Mentioning @Cade Darkbound @Rose Moon @Eyre ReevesThird on stage, she made her way to her teammate's side with purpose. Rules that she'd heard a thousand times over came and went, but she couldn't blame the staff for reiterating. She did however roll her eyes at Dmitri's passive insults mixed between them, a humored scoff coming just from under her breath. He didn't expect much, huh? Well, she hoped he was prepared to have his socks blown off, because her team had a few tricks under their sleeves.
Dark eyes scanned the opposing pair from head to toe, taking in a red-head girl, very pretty, and then the boy who worked beneath her on the Headliner. Phaedra knew little of the Gryffindors other than name, year, and most crucially, that they had lost their first duel, just as she had. Though evident by her confident stance, she had no intentions of remaining a loser today. The majority of her post-match analyzing had been towards those with a victory under their belt, but she'd discover the capabilities of even these two soon enough; experience was a generous teacher.
The eagle brooch attached to her robes gleamed as she gave a nod in Cade's direction. "You too." Phaedra wasn't exactly thrilled being partnered with someone even younger than her last, but perhaps it was a blessing somewhat. From her years of prefectdom, she felt that first-years tended to cooperate more. Unbearable egos simply had not yet poisoned their brains as it had for others. As long as Cade stayed beside her and fought as he had in practices, Phaedra knew he'd be a decent teammate. Pulling her wand from her pocket—same wood as Cade's, how poetic—she readied herself for the signal.

It would be foolish to think that Eyre wasn't nervous about his next duel. He and Rose had been utterly destroyed by the previous team, and there was a large part of him that doubted that the outcome of this match would be any different. As they stood there on the platform, Rose's words provided him with a bit of comfort.
"Right... I do hope so." He muttered, sighing as he gently stretched out his neck. Hopefully his night wouldn't end with him choking on slugs in the hospital wing again.
one morning this sadness will fossilize and i will forget how to cry. ☆

Dmitri had to cover his eyes as a quick burst of light flooded the duelling arena.
Not really able to see what went on during it, the boy blinked away spots in his vision as he witnessed the aftermath. It seemed that the Ravenclaws did not suffer any damage nor any affliction at all, while the Gryffindors seemed to be quite unsteady on their feet.
As far as beginnings went, it was very respectable.
"I do not get paid enough for this." He would say before slicing a hand through the air once more, signalling for the duellists to continue. "The next person who casts a Lumos Maxima in front of my face like that will personally pay my appointment with an optometrist."
"With that being said, let the next round begin!"

Tagging @Phaedra Stavrou @Rose Moon @Eyre ReevesCade covered his eyes just in time, ducking his face into his elbow. Through his closed eyelids, he saw a flash of red. Uncovering them he looked up to see both the Gryffindors dawning dazed and confused glances, blinking out the double exposure. "Nice one, Phae!" Cade grinned, she had executed the plan perfectly. Now they had to set the next phase in motion. He reminded himself, it was never a good idea to get his hopes up, there was always a chance the Gryffindors could revive their prospects. Cade brought himself back to his dueling stance, ready for anything that would come about.

Mentioning @Cade Darkbound @Rose Moon @Eyre ReevesThe strip of walnut in Phaedra's hand flicked downwards, up, and then down again, with such a nonchalant ease to her gestures one would have to wonder if she felt nervous at all. "Lumos Maxima!" As soon as the last syllable to her incantation cleared, its light set off like a strobe straight to the retinas, wand held high as white embraced the ceiling and walls. Her own eyes scrunched tight for protection, and when the radiating heat cooled, Phaedra could open them to relative safety, neither her nor Cade with a single scratch. That wasn't the case for Gryffindor. "Thank you. Now have you remembered the plan?"
She heard the whizzing of a spell fly over her shoulder, but had no clue which of the two was the culprit. No matter—they missed and Ravenclaw had not. It was a brilliant start to a duel, really. A light of all things? Only the innovative mind of a Ravenclaw could whip that surprise up. If everything went as planned over the next few rounds, she'd owe Mars and Celynne a personal thank-you for the tactic. It was because of falling victim to it herself that she knew the troubles of blinking spots out of the eyes.Doing as strategized (x)

Rose lunged forward like a lioness pouncing onto their prey- ruthless. "Mucus ad Nauseam!" Rose said, an arc of green light shooting toward her victim. In the wild, a lion could eat an eagle or a raven (or whatever the mascot of Ravenclaw was) any day.
Gah- light. So much light. A lot of light right in her eyes. As an instinct when she saw it coming, Rose closed her eyes in almost a flinch, but it didn't do much good anyway. Rose shook her head, trying to blink away the light and colors invading her vision. She tried her best to listen for anything happening on the other side of the platform, but even though she didn't see or hear her spell hit Phaedra, whom she had been aiming for, but honestly, she could have been wrong. At least she hoped one of their spells had hit.
But maybe their luck was suffering just as much as last time.
