It was quite early in the morning, sometime around seven, when the early-birds of Hogwarts started streaming into the Great Hall for Breakfast. Leanne was never one of them, but today was an exception for her. After all, who wouldn't be excited for the first day of class? And who didn't want to wake up early to make a good impression on other people? She tried waking up her dorm mates to accompany her, but alas, they remained soundly asleep. "It's your fault if you arrive late, you know. I bet, every other Ravenclaw would be there already." she muttered to herself, and continued packing her school bag.

Stuffing in an overwhelming excess of parchment, quills, and almost every single textbook in her bag, ("You may never know when you need them", she reasoned), Leanne skipped all the way down the corridor.  Whistling a jolly tune, she was entirely devastated to see that the hall was relatively empty: there was a cluster of Gryffindors hurriedly rushing through holiday homework, a few Slytherins walking around, some Hufflepuffs and several of her house mates; but that was it.  The rays of bright sunlight were shining through the windows, illuminating the House Point Hourglass sitting at the far right, making jewels inside them sparkle.

Her face fell, seeing no one she recognised around. Although, Leanne saw a kind looking Hufflepuff girl sitting not far from her, and mentally made a note to go and introduce herself. "Another one of those early newbies." she heard from someone sitting at the corner of the hall. Ignoring the person, she sat down, swinging her heavy book bag over her shoulders, and started eating alone.  Occasionally, Leanne would look over to the entrance, finding anyone that she knew.

Mid-way through her omelet, she recognised a flash of brown hair from the entering crowd. "Isn't that August? The boy who I sat with on the train ride to Hogwarts? Well, I'll go over and say hi, and maybe sit with him for breakfast!" Standing up, she started walking towards him, but half way past the Hufflepuff table...Leanne would later swear that there was some unexplained force that made her trip; her heavy books, spare parchment flew in the air, while she landed on the ground, smack on her face.  She watched in horror as a small plastic inkpot approached the kind-looking Hufflepuff girl she saw earlier, its shadow looming ominously above the girl's head. At that moment, wild fantasies of her consequences started playing in her mind, as Leanne struggled to grapple what she had done. "It's the first day, and I've already ruined someone's life!"

And...Smack! Black ink was dripping down the poor girl's head slowly, but at least it was not as much ink as she imagined it to be. Knowing that she was bad with starting conversations, Leanne said the first thing that came to her mind.

 "Umm, Hi?"

Harper had sat down to eat not long before Leanne had come in. She had her plate full of all her favorite breakfast foods including bacon, eggs, and sausage. She even had a glass of orange juice. Breakfast was her favorite meal of the day because in her opinion it has all of the tastiest foods.

She also loved to people watch and eat. That was what she used to do growing up with her parents, they would go to a restaurant and would people watch. She smiled to herself thinking of those memories. She already missed her parents but going to Hogwarts almost made up for that.

When Harper had finally finished people watching she leans down to eat a bite of her eggs but before she could put it in her mouth she feels something wet pour on her head and then she hears a clatter of something falling beside her. She calmly puts down her fork and looks behind her to see a girl on the ground.

"Oh my gosh! Are you ok?" She asks seeing as the girl looked like she had tripped or something. She didn't seem to care about the ink running down her head as she goes to help the girl who had fallen just moments before.

Harper began to help the girl pick up all her papers and books. After she finished set them aside and stood up offering a hand to help this girl up. She swore she recognized her but she couldn't put her finger on how she knew her. She didn't even care about all the ink on her, she just wanted to make sure this girl was ok first it looked like she had a pretty nasty fall.

"I'm fine." Leanne mumbled, as she grabbed the other girl's hand. It was actually really embarrassing for her; she couldn't help but follow the trace of the ink flowing down the her helper's head. Swiveling her head around, noting that not many students had noticed the commotion, she released a sigh. But she knew, it wouldn't be long for the rumor mill to pick up the news.

Turning around, she discovered to her humiliation,  that the girl even offered to pick her heavy books! "It's ok, I'll do it myself," She hurriedly muttered, snatching her copy of Magical Theory from the Hufflepuff, messily stuffing it in her bag. She could always return to the common room and tidy it, but now, Leanne just wanted to get out of the mess she created.

"Here, take these." Leanne offered her a box of tissues (taken from the nearby table), still eyeing the gooey ink staining the Hufflepuff's short brown hair. What else could she say anyway? The silence between the both of them felt extremely awkward, even more so for a unsocial insect like her. "I don't know any cleaning spells, and I rather not ask a older prefect for help." she thought.  Although the girl had a concerned look on her face, but she was still staring at her, and Leanne was pressured to say something.

"Oh, I'm so sorry for the ink," Leanne cringed, knowing that she had used one of the Dreaded Five statements that always made her sound too insincere, no matter what tone she used.  "I suggest that maybe you should go and wipe the ink off."  Mentally chiding herself not explaining clearly, she quickly added on.

"No, it's not because to remove any evidence of this incident!" Scratching her head (she always did that when something was bothering her), Leanne guilty looked back. "Since it's the first day of classes today, I was worried that because of that ink spot, you could make a bad impression on your teachers..."

In a move that was untypical of a  'rule-abiding, teachers' pet' Ravenclaw, Leanne threw her hands in the air unexpectedly, and started to chuckle. "Who cares about what they say anyway? By the way, I'm Leanne!"

Harper took the tissues from Leanne and began to wipe herself off as she listened to the Ravenclaw talk. She had always been told she was a good listener.

As Leanne was talking and freaking out that Harper might be mad she shook her head. "Please don't fret about it. I'll be fine. I can always run and change my robes before classes start." She replied before giving herself a quick once over and wiping off any remaining ink she could.

Once Leanne had introduced herself Harper smiled and introduced herself as well. "What a pleasure to meet you! My name is Harper. Harper Pena." She replied I'm response to Leanne's introduction. Once she finished wiping off all of the ink she took the tissues and waded them up and placed them next to her door on the table. I'll worry about those later... Once I clean up my stuff She thought.

She looked around seeing that it appeared that no one seemed to notice the scene that had just unfolded before them. She let out a sigh of relief. "At least no one saw what happened. I would hate for bad rumors to go around about you." She stated which was the truth. She would feel bad if people began to spread rumors about Leanne. It seemed like she was a nice girl and she didn't deserve that. No one does.

Self-inviting herself to sit in the Hufflepuff table, Leanne helped herself to a roll of wholegrain bread. "It's quite lucky that most people didn't see the mess I made..." she eyed the wads of soiled tissue on the table. The table was slowly filling up with more students, and some eyed the obvious addition to the table that morning.

"So, what brings you, my fair maiden, to the hall so early in the morning?" she giggled, knowing that the extra words she used was a spur of the moment idea. Slurping down a cup of orange juice, which magically appeared on the table ("and most likely from the house elves from the kitchen." she concluded), Leanne cherished the sweet taste of the juice.

"It really is quite peaceful around here," With a contented smile on her face, Leanne looked towards the nearest windows, where a pair of swallows were still making their mating calls. "Classes hasn't started yet, and homework hasn't been given yet..." Talking about school life always made her relax, and Leanne developed a sparkly glint in her eye.

"Oh yes, classes! Which of the subjects are you most excited for? Mine's Charms, since there's so many things you could do with them!"

Harper watched as the table filled up with more people as the morning progressed. She felt bad abour whole ink situation but there was nothing they could do.

When Leanne spoke Harper quietly listened and waited for her to stop talking before answering. "Well I guess I just woke up and was hungry so I came down early. What about you?" She answered with a little chuckle at the end in response to her "fair maiden" comment. She was starting to like Leanne already! She seemed to be a humorous girl which Harper enjoyed. She loved to have friends who could make her laugh. At least she hoped they would become friends. Leanne seemed like a really nice girl.

Once Leanne began to speak again, Harper listened closely once more. She shook her head in response to the mess comment. It wasn't a big deal. If people spread rumors about Leanne then Harper would refute them.

When Leanne asked about classes a huge smile grew on Harper's face. There honestly wasn't a class she wasn't excited for. When she mentioned Charms Harper nodded in agreement. "That makes sense. That one is also on my list. You make a valid point. She replied and then quickly thought of a follow-up question. "Are there any Clubs or anything you're excited to join?" She asks with a smile.

"Oh, me?" Leanne gestured to her bulging book bag, her excess parchment, quills stuffed messily from her earlier mishap. Her thick copy of Hogwarts, A History was right on top, almost about to fall out of her bag. Chuckling, she replied. "It's quite obvious. I guess was just too excited for classes today, and nearly bought my entire school supplies with me." Glancing towards her untidy bag, Leanne had a sudden idea. Actually, since there's still time before classes, why not I clear my bad of the useless stuff right now...

Without a warning, she proceeded to pour out its contents, all the while listening to Harper talk. Out came the thick stack of books, a crumbled ball of what used to be iron-fresh parchment, a whole variety of quills of all colour and designs, all which came tumbling down on the table. Her bag seemed to hold a endless supply of items, Leanne was quite surprised that her tiny, fragile bag could hold so much.

When Harper mentioned about potential clubs to join, she paused her repacking. "I've heard about a Duelling Club in the school, I can't wait to see how I fare among other students!" Gesturing towards her wand, polished and with runes etched near its grip area, she continued. "Mr Ollivander told me that my wand is perfect for fast, quick-witted people, ideal for duels; so I'm quite keen to try this activity." Giving her best puppy-dog eyes to her newest friend (it had worked on her parents before, so she counted it as a success), Leanne tried to convince her to join as well.

Putting the 'not needed' materials in one pile and the rest back into her bag, she neatly repacked her bag, noting that the unwanted pile grew bigger every minute. The number of questionable items also grew. Why did I pack two extra pairs of socks, and remind me again, by Merlin's beard, why did I pack twelve quills and seven inkpots?

"There's also others like the Gobstones Club, and a large number of student-initiated clubs, but I've heard little about them." Having finally finished sorting and repacking her school bag, Leanne marveled at the difference between now and before. It felt so much lighter, and its seams didn't seem like it would break apart any moment! However, glancing towards the table, where a sizeable pile of unwanted items sat, she wondering how she would bring it back all the way to the tower. "So, how about you? And since I'm assuming you're a muggle-born, have you heard about quidditch?"

Harper watched as Leanne emptied her bag and began to re-sort it. She looked at all the items she brought and smiled a little. It was quite obvious that she was excited about classes. Harper looked at her own bag seeing it was actually quite neat and she decided that she didn't need to sort it, or if she did she would do it later after class.

Harper listened as Leanne mentioned the duelling club and she had to admit she was intrigued. She thought about what she knew about wands with dragon heartstrings and she spoke: "Well that duelling club sounds interesting. Ollivander told me that my wand learns spells quicker than some other wands. So maybe I might join that club too! It sounds fun and interesting!" She said as her voice was filled with excitement. She couldn't wait to explore all of their options for clubs and such. "After classes, today do you want to meet and explore options for clubs? Maybe we could join one or two together."

Harper's eyes lit up with excitement when she mentioned quidditch. She had heard about it for sure and definitely wanted to join the Hufflepuff team. The only problem was she wasn't sure there were any spots left and she was also too nervous to join. She didn't know what she would be good at. She also considered being a cheerleader or something for them because being fairly short she would make a good flyer. "Yes, I am muggle-born, and I have heard of quidditch. I would really like to join the team but I am a little afraid to try out because I don't know what I would be good at." She says and pauses before speaking again. "I was thinking if Hogwarts had a quidditch cheerleading team... I think I saw sign-ups for that. Since I am fairly short I think I would make a good flyer." She finishes and then looks at Leanne. "Are you interested in quidditch?" She asks with a bright smile plastered on her face.

Squinting at her timetable, with its tiny scribbles that was hard to read, she spoke. "Classes finish at four-thirty in the afternoon today, perhaps I'll see you outside the Hufflepuff common room entrance? We could take a walk around the school, and see what clubs there are to offer." Rolling her eyes at a nearby student who again commented that she was sitting at the wrong table (I know, for Merlin's sake, could you stop telling me that!), Leanne pushed her empty plate away from her.

Her mind wandered towards her recent nightwalk through the empty school, when she was armed with only a fickling light from her Lumos. It was late at night, sometime after one, when she had snuck out of her dorm, unable to sleep. Leanne had tiptoed between the many suits of armour that lined the halls of the school, and had almost got caught by a roaming prefect if she didn't duck behind one in time. From this experience, she had gained an insight into the school, and knew exactly where the Hufflepuff common room was.

She was snapped back to reality by the sudden outburst from her new friend, and Leanne felt a tinge of guilt for not paying attention. Harper was talking about Quidditch animatedly, and she agreed that the Hufflepuff girl should try out for  the quidditch team. "Even though you might not get in this time, it surely is a good experience for you. And besides, you could try out for the Quidditch team next year!" You'll might never know how good you are until you try...

And as for Leanne? Scratching her head in embarrassment, she continued speaking. "I was born with good senses, and I'm quite nimble and small, which is good for a seeker's position. However, every broom I encounter seems to hate me." Pouting, she recalled a incident when she was younger. During her first time on a child's broom, there was a sudden lurch of the broom while flying, and she fell face-first onto the muddy floor. Looking at her watch, Leanne discovered that there was twenty minutes before classes started.

Jumping out from her seat, she starting gathering her pile of 'unwanted items' in her hands. "I think it's time to get ready for classes; for me to dump my stuff and for you to clean up. After this, we both share Herbology, I'll promise to save you a seat if I'm early!"

I think the thread should close soon, maybe one or two more replies and we'll be done.

Harper listened to Leanne when she came up with her plan for them to meet after classes. She liked the idea. They could explore clubs together and maybe she wouldn't be scared to join quidditch or any other interesting clubs if she had someone to support her and maybe even join with her.

Harper was so busy talking about quidditch and getting excited about the many clubs she hadn't even noticed that Leanne was spacing off. She had a tendency to talk even if people weren't paying 100% attention to her. It was kind of a weird habit that she didn't even know she had.

When Leanne encouraged her to join the quidditch team she couldn't help but smile a little. She was glad to have someone to push her out of her comfort zone like this. From barely talking to Leanne she could tell that she was going to be a great friend.

When her new friend had mentioned had mentioned it was time to go for classes Harper had to admit she felt a little bit of sadness because she loved to talk to this new girl. "Ok! I'll see you in Herbology! And I promise to do the same!" She said before getting up and grabbing her leftover food and as she did she glanced down at her clothes again. She had completely forgotten about getting ink on them. She would just likely have to change from them into new ones. She didn't want to make bad impressions on the teachers. She looked to her new friend before waving. "Bye Leanne! I'll see you in Herbology! I have to hurry and get changed before it starts!" she said with a little laugh.
