History/Background Story:
Slade's childhood was like that of any other average Canadian boy: he went to public school; attended extra-curriculars; ate pancakes, sausage and bacon with maple syrup on the weekends; and went to sports games with his father. It was mundane, but full of love and laughter.
As far as Slade could remember, his father had brought home odd trinkets and items, saying he was working on them to fix them. He would always keep them locked away in his workshop, never letting Slade take a look. Once, however, the door was left open, and Slade took the opportunity to investigate. Inside, he had found a miniature model of a remote-control Zamboni, driving around as though on its own, crashing into the walls and table-legs. Picking it up to take a look, Slade couldn't find any batteries. He was puzzling this out when his father walked in, upset to find his son in there when he knew he wasn't supposed to be. When Slade asked how it worked without batteries, his father gave a complicated explanation about something something electro-magnetic pulses something something. Slade never asked again.
Slade wasn't quite as close with his mother. Although very loving and kind, she traveled a lot, always telling him that it was for work. According to her, she worked in international relations, traveling the world and "making friends" with people in other countries. It was an "important job" that helped pave national and global opportunities and cooperation, promising Slade that he "would understand when he was older".
Unbeknownst to Slade, however, his parents were not all that they seemed. And neither was he.
Slade's magic first manifested when he was 8 years of age and playing with his dog. He was playing fetch in the yard with his Siberian Husky when he went to go rub her belly, only to bear witness to a strange phenomenon: his dog's white and brown fur began to change colour, until all of her had gone completely orange! Shocked by what had happened, he took her with him and ran to his parents. Seeing what had happened to their dog, Slade's parents couldn’t help but laugh in amazement. They then proceeded to tell Slade about what they were are and what it was that they actually did for employment.
After his parent's explanation, he understood. His father, wasn't at all the general handy-man that he had claimed to be. Instead, he worked for the Canadian Ministry of Magic in the Department of Magic-Imbued Muggle Artefacts. All of the "broken" things that he had been bringing home over the years had been magically enchanted, and he had been working to analyze and disenchant them. Admittedly, the revelation of his mother's work wasn't all that exciting. She did pretty much what she always said she had done, only in the magical world.
Therefore, although muggle-born, his father was a wizard, and his mother a witch; and as they explained, this made Slade wizard-born. And having now demonstrated a magical affinity, his parents were very proud. Their son was not a squib!
When Slade was 9, his mother was promoted and transferred to the British Ministry of Magic. Since it involved a more permanently localized role, his father was transferred and the family as a whole emigrated from Canada to England. While he didn’t want to leave his friends, he was excited to go somewhere new and didn't find the transition too difficult. He continued to attend a public school and live at home, and for the most part they lead a normal muggle life to keep life normal for Slade.
Any sense of normalcy was interrupted the moment of the arrival of one particular piece of post, however. It was his mother who had first found the letter mixed in with the rest of that day's mail. Slade can still recall just how excited and flustered she seemed to be as she ran back to find him. Practically thrusting the letter into Slade's hand, she told him that he should be the one to open it since it was for him, and he deserved to be the first to read it. Just as he slid the letter from the envelope, his father walked in from his workshop, asking what the commotion was all about. Slade's mother informed her husband that Slade had received his letter from Hogwarts, to which his father commented, "So he's finally going to Wizarding School, eh?"
Slade was very excited at the idea of being able to enter the magical world that his parents had only briefly talked about. Although a little apprehensive, he was eager, thinking that the experience could only be very cool.
