Brightening Up The Room Errand pv Andrew Vance

@Andrew Vance

Dan walked into the library, one of this favorite places in the whole castle. There was so much to read and find out about the wizarding world, and this place was like the Beast's library.

But he wasn't here to read this time. This time Professor Caradoc Browne (or Doc Brown, as Dan called him), tasked a number of students with putting flowers all over the castle. Dan had chose the library as, despite the somewhat nice atmosphere of the library, it was a bit of a dreary thing to look at. Some flowers would perk it right up.

With him on this endeavor was his best friend, Andrew Vance. It would seem that when Andy said he would forgive Dan, he meant it. Everything was exactly back to how it was. Dan made a mental note to ask Andy how he let things go that easily. That was something he hadn't learned how to do.

Dan was dressed how he usually was; Hoodie, shorts, and bare feet. He started looking around for places to put the flowers in. He wished he could fit them onto the bookshelves themselves, as that would make them look nicer. But, the vases would probably get knocked off and shatter on the floor if he did that. So, he settled for the tables placed around for reading at. Maybe he'd do the windows too?

"Hey Andy, ye found a good spot?"

He looked over his shoulder at Andy. He was so happy that he was his partner.

Andrew didn't believe in holding grudges or staying mad at someone for very long. It took too much mental effort, and he'd rather let things go and not get all ruffled up over something so trivial. Sure, he had been shocked and surprised that Dan would consider drugging him with a love-potion-laced Chocoball, but at the end of the day, he didn't take it personal, and understood where his best friend was coming from. A place of sadness and heartbreak… Dan's immense guilt said it all, and Andrew had already forgiven him, despite the rumors circulating that he and Dan were now a couple - after witnessing the two of them together in Andrew's love-potion-induced state - but the gossip didn't deter Andrew from resuming their friendship as normal. People were going to believe whatever they wanted to believe in. No point in making a fuss over it. And in some ways, perhaps Andrew didn't mind playing along, feeding into those rumors a little bit. He could joke around and say that he was Dan's "boyfriend", because from a certain point of view, he almost acted like one, considering how tight his relationship and affections were with Dan. "Bromance", as Andrew learned it was dubbed.

When Dan asked him whether he wanted to partake in a little Valentine's errand in helping him place flowers around the Castle, Andrew happily tagged along (anything to procrastinate from doing his homework). Bundles of fresh flowers had already been snipped from the gardens, and Andrew carefully picked out pairings of flowers and vases for his own custom arrangements. One of them, he decided to go for something more elegant and mature: Red roses and white calla lilies in a crystal ruby vase. The other was a more vibrant spring theme: A pink and white palette of roses, daisies, lilies, and waxflowers in a pink glass vase. Carrying one in each arm, he strolled after Dan into the library, scanning for a location worthy enough to showcase his creations. Preferably one in the open, where lots of people were sure to pass by and see them. He hadn't put this much thought into his displays for them not to go unnoticed.

He found one of the larger reading tables in the main walkways of the Library, and placed both of his vases there, one at each end. They made a beautiful pair together.

"Oui, mon ami," he replied to Dan. (French: "Yes, my friend") Something about Valentine's brought out the French in him. What little French Andrew had memorized anyway, in as poorly of an accent as he could replicate.

As festive as the flowers were in spreading the atmosphere of the season, one thought had Andrew slightly concerned. "Although, I am worried about allergies," he mulled aloud. "Is anyone allergic to pollen? Or are these flowers enchanted to not make anyone sneeze?" He began to wonder if it was a good idea for him to plant two big vases of flowers in such a commonly-accessed area.

Dan... was evidently far less experienced with flowers than Andy was. He just picked out flowers that looked pretty together, namely red and white roses. He wasn't deathly allergic, but too long around pollen made him start sneezing. So, he did not have as much experience with them as Andy seemed to.
Still, Dan arranged them and set them into vases with as much care as he could manage, making sure they looked as lovely as possible.

Andy's answer, however, made Dan pause.
Mon ami? What the fu-....
He just smiled. That accent was horrendous, so it was pretty funny.

He set a vase up in the window, so that the light would catch it, sending lovely red light in several directions, and set the flowers in it, making sure that they'd be nice and bunched up, but not damaging any petals or anything, all while trying as hard as he could not to breathe too often.
He sort of envied Andy, and his ability to stay around plants for long periods of time. Thankfully, Dan was not allergic to any herbs in food. Otherwise one of his favorite pastimes would be horrible for him to do. Dan didn't know what he would do if he were allergic to sage, or rosemary. Or god forbid garlic.

Then Andy spoke again. So Dan answered.

"I'm.... kind of allergic to pollen. And I dunno if theyre enchanted against allergies or not. Lets ask later, yeah?"

Andrew's eyes widened, stunned by the revelation.

"What? You're allergic?" He stared at Dan in disbelief. "I didn't know that! We've been friends all this time and I didn't know this until now?" How could he have missed that? After all the times they had spent in Herbology class together, and frolicked outside on the Grounds, Andrew never suspected that Dan had a pollen allergy. Learn something new every day, he supposed.

"Shh!" One of the House-elves - an Assistant Librarian - poked out his head from an aisle nearby. "Mister Vance is much too loud…" He hissed a warning, if not apologetically.

"Sorry." Andrew hushed himself in embarrassment until the House-elf had ducked back into the aisle again, though he couldn't help but feel a tick of annoyance. He was barely above whispering level! He'd heard students flip pages louder than his whispering.

"Or…" Andrew said slyly, sidling up to one of the flower-filled vases. "We could find out right now… Pollenus allergicus!" He whipped out a pink lily from the vase, pointing the flower head at Dan's nose as if it were a wand, while uttering his made-up spell.

Perhaps it would be cruel for him to inflict Dan with such suffering, if Dan did start sneezing. Oh well. "That's for the Chocoball", Andrew would justify.

"Yeah, I got one. Not that severe, though. Hardly an issue. We like, dont hafta stop goin on the grounds'r nuthin. All that happens is sometimes my nose runs a bit. If I get a faceful o' that dirty, yellow plant shite, I'll start sneezin'. Nothin' terrible. I don't think Im allergic to any magical plants... Havent been yet."

One of the house elves reprimanded Andy for being too loud. Which Dan considered rather unfair, considering he was talking louder than Andy was, and the bloody thing didn't even so much as glance at him.
Though he was rather impressed that the house elf knew Andy by name. Of course, the librarians knew Dan immediately; he often frequented the library, and was quite possibly the only boy, or perhaps even the only person who walked about barefooted everywhere. So it was no surprise that the house elves would be able to pick him from a crowd.

Andy then pulled something mean. Out of nowhere, when Dan was about to have a word with the house elf over priorities, Andy said some made up spell, and shoved a rose right into Dan's nose.
THAT, was the faceful of pollen he mentioned. Immediately, Dan's nose reacted by forcing him to sneeze once, twice, three times. Dan batted the rose away, and stepped backward, further away from it.

The house elf came to silence him, but Dan didn't hear what it said, as he blew his nose into a handkerchief as hard as he could twice, ridding himself of the horrible substance.

"Pollenus Allergicus? The fuck kinda bullshite is that?"

Andy would probably be getting a bedroom Rictusempra for that later.

But, that was for later. Dan returned the rose to it's vase.

"So no, they aren't charmed against their shitty pollen. Good to know."

Dan resumed, and looked over his shoulder to see Andy doing the same.
Yeah. Cute as he was, he was going to be laughing uncontrollably when they got back to the Slytherin Dorm.
