She certainly had taken her sweet time. Just about three weeks had passed since the morning that Evelynn had stumbled upon the gaggle of Slytherin boys harassing the young Ravenclaw first-year, and since then, she had yet to return the coat that the Gray boy had no doubt begrudgingly relinquished for the sake of the tormented. Not that she had had much of a choice. It wasn't like she had been in possession of said coat for that entire duration.

In fact, she'd only finally managed to corner the boy a week and a bit ago in order to ask for it back and had had to remind him several times since then. In all honestly, she had very nearly lost her temper on the kid and had had to result to threatening report him to a teacher as having stolen the article of clothing in a revenge act before he finally caved and gave it back to her; seemed he had been more than a little spiteful about the whole incident and wasn't exactly in a mood for being kindly. But Evelynn had promised to return it, and her word was her bond. She wasn't about to let some snot-nosed brat who had allowed himself to get jumped without a fight give her a bad name. It was already bad enough that he had enforced the stereotypical weakness of muggles.

Evelynn huffed as those thoughts broiled once again beneath the surface of her mind. The months leading up to the holidays had done well to build her confidence and mitigate most of the issues of self-esteem and lack of belonging that she had felt upon initial arrival at the school. This event, however, seemed to have brought them all right back up again, and rarely did a day go by that she didn't catch herself at least once stewing upon the event and how the Slytherin may as well have been addressing her in all his haughty proclamations.

Once again, since she had come into its possession, the temptation to take the coat out to the lake and burn it tugged at her. She shoved it back defiantly. Instead, she cast a steely gaze towards the Slytherin table as she entered the Great Hall. She didn't see him at first, and very nearly gave up the attempt at nicety. Just as she began to veer in the direction of her own table on the opposite side of the hall, a flash of platinum blonde caught the rays of the morning sun, and thus her attention. It wasn't Gray, of course. But conveniently, the one she sought did happen to be seated not far from the beacon.

Squaring her shoulders, Evelynn resumed her original trajectory. Her jaw was set, her gaze unwavering. Many balked at the idea of treading so near to the dreaded den of snakes. She could never understand why. They were just children, like everyone else. She wasn't scared.

"Gray," she called out casually on approach, her attention sliding briefly to the others seated nearby before settling firmly on her target. "Good morning."

She held the folded coat out to him, and stated simply, "as promised," without further explanation. Gray would know what it was and why; and she didn't feel the need to fill in anyone else at the table.

The great hall was packed and noisy as students sat down to tuck into the breakfast that lay ready on the tables. There was a wide range of different things they could choose from, such as crispy bacon, appealing eggs and perfect toast that always seemed to stay warm. Percival had already found a seat in the middle of the Slytherin row, surrounded by his fellow house mates who were loudly talking amongst themselves. In front of him was a half open copy of the daily prophet, up to date with all the latest news about the wizarding world. He seemed to have his gaze on it as he tucked into a bowl of cereal, minding his own business and keeping to himself as his eyes scanned the moving images. Suddenly, someone to the right called over to him "Gray," said a voice that caught his attention. His head looked up from the page and turned to the source, almost surprised with who he saw.

Coming over to him was a girl, the same girl that ruined his morning some weeks ago "Good morning." Evelyn said over to him as she came to a stop beside him. The Slytherin boys along the row looked over to him and the Ravenclaw, muttering and smirking to each other from the girls presence. Percival looked up to her and sighed, his gaze slowly going down to the coat which was folded in her arms "as promised," she added. It was almost a shock that she even bothered to return to the coat, especially after what happened at the lake "What took you so long..." he muttered as he took a closer look at the coat, noticing various marks and even some rips that was visable "I see you took great care of it" he said sarcastically as he shook his head, knowing the coat would mostly likely be no longer wearable. To the left of him, two fellow Slytherins were taking great pleasure in mocking the state of his wear and the strange fact that a Ravenclaw had come over to their table "What's with the coat Percival? Have you got Ravenclaws to look after your coats now?" they laughed over to him, before turning back to each other and saying more stuff about the pair.

Percival smirked slightly from the comments and slowly rolled up his daily prophet, holding it in his right hand as he quickly got to his feet. Unknown to the boys Percival was coming up behind them, getting ready to knock both of their heads off with a newspaper. He slowly drew his arm back and slapped the paper off both of their heads, forcing them both to lean forwards and groan "Awwww...." as they both brought a hand up to check for any damage. Percival leaned over the boys and put a hand on their shoulders, his face still having a sly grin on it "Why dont you shut up for a few minutes?" insisted Percival as he looked at them both for an answer. Soon after his suggestion they nodded, still groaning as he patted both of them both on the shoulder. He placed the paper in his jean pocket and walked back over to the Ravenclaw, his hand reaching over to snatch the coat from the Ravenclaw girl "I'm surprised you even returned this, from the state it's in the coat looks like something a muggle or mutant would wear..." muttured Gray in a low tone. The word "Mutant" was for someone who was born to parents who had both wizard and muggle born parents. In his eyes, they were almost as bad as the pure muggles.

Perhaps she wasn't scared, but that didn't make her immune to other rushes of emotion. Evelynn paid the other Slytherin boys no mind. It wasn't that she didn't notice them, nor that she didn't care about what they said or how they acted, but rather, she decidedly did not want to give them the satisfaction that their jeering and not-so-subtle whispers were causing her no small amount of discomfort and embarrassment. It was bad enough that she was quite certain that a rosy-tinted flush was slowly creeping up her neck (at least her hair would probably cover that up); she didn't need her hands to start shaking as well.

Well. She needn't worry for long. True to what she might have expected had she desired to put any thought into it (not that she would want to waste any time thinking of this prat), Gray jumped immediately over polite pleasantries and straight to passive-aggressive sarcasm.

Evelynn didn't reply right away, fighting to contain the expression of contempt that desperately wanted to break out over her face. She managed, barely, and instead it only succeeded in twinging the corner of her mouth. Before she could make any reply anyway, the other boys at the table opened their stupid mouths. Emphasis on stupid. Evelynn quirked a brow, diverting her gaze to Gray's fellows with an expression that was, frankly, somewhere between amusement and bemusement. Naturally, it only intensified as she watched Gray withdraw from his seat to discipline them.

"I see you continue to resort to classless acts of barbarism," she retorted coolly as he snatched the coat from her grasp. Any notions of prior embarrassment on her part had long since faded.

She couldn't deny she was feeling more than a little ruffled by his reactions. She had done as promised. She had returned his coat. She had even dusted it off and folded it nicely. How dare he accuse her of not doing her due diligence with another's belongings. As for this "state", well...she fought (and won) the urge to insist on having it back a moment to check it over and perform repairs as needed. She wasn't even sure what he was talking about. She hadn't seen anything wrong with it, otherwise she would have. At least, she was pretty sure she would have. A small part of her might have wanted to leave it torn or dirty or whatever just to spite him. That small part became all-encompassing with his next snappy comment.

Something a muggle or mutant would wear, indeed.

"I suppose it's in the right hands, then," she replied with a sneer. "You're a far cry from humane. But regardless, you have it back now. Do whatever you want."

Ready to be quite finished with his verbal insolence, Evelynn turned, preparing to take her leave. She paused mid-turn, however, choosing to add, "And don't you know you aren't supposed to treat the mentally challenged like that?" She flickered a mockingly pitiful look in their direction before looking back at Gray. "Poor blokes can't even tell the school Houses apart."

She was, of course, referring to the fact that they had called her a Ravenclaw. With a snort, she resumed her previous motion, turning to walk away from them.

"I see you continue to resort to classless acts of barbarism," retorted the girl coolly as he snatched the coat out her arms, not impressed by the handling of his fellow house mates. Percival didn't think he was barbaric in any means, he was only forcing others to show the right discipline when needed. Most of his actions were for a reason, and not just to pick on a certain individual "I wouldn't call it that..." he said to himself in sarcasm, not wanting to interrupting her little talk in front of the entire house. More and more people were taking note of the situation and starring at the duo, most of them talking as they watched the situation go down. Once he had taken the coat into his possession he slowly placed the folded and admittedly battered coat onto the bench, his attention returning as to her as she added "I suppose it's in the right hands, then," she replied with a sneer. "You're a far cry from humane. But regardless, you have it back now. Do whatever you want." barbaric and inhumane? all these comments were simply out of order. Down at the lake he gave that excuse of a student a favour by pushing him in the lake, and he wouldn't hesitate to do it again if he had the chance.

Evelyn slowly turned and began to walk away after that untrue comment, not caring about the stares that followed her. However, she turned around and looked back at him again "And don't you know you aren't supposed to treat the mentally challenged like that?" she said before giving what looked like a pitiful look towards the pair that bothered her and back to him "Poor blokes can't even tell the school Houses apart." finished the girl before turning around and starting what she originally planned. He hated to admit but she wasn't wrong, they did get her house colours wrong, but that didn't mean it was wrong to say it in the first place. Suddenly, the two boys stood up, fuming and angered by the comments she just said "HEY! WHAT DID YOU JUST CALL US YOU STUPID RA- GRYFFINDOR!" one them shouted as both hurried after her. All of the table had heard this commotion now as a group of lads from the table jumped out of their seats to prevent the pair from getting their hands on her. They both continued to throw a mixture of verbals in her direction while the group tried to drag them back to their seats, struggling as they twisted and squirmed to get out of the grip.

Percival had enough this point, all Evelyn was doing was causing trouble. Who would of thought returning a coat could cause this much uprawr. The Slytherin quickly walked after her through the people that were helping defuse the situation, his eyes coldly fixed on the troublesome student. When he got close enough he attempted to grab her by the wrist and turn her around, looking to say a few comments of his own "You better watch your bloody tongue, or are you incapable of behaving like the goodie two shoes you're meant to be?" he grunted, annoyed by the amount of chaos she had caused.

Evelynn was almost surprised — despite her obvious intention — that they had caught on at all to her earlier meaning. Even prior to their demonstrated lack of awareness, they had seemed rather dull to her. Brutes with singular needs, she might have said. Thus, a barely contained snort of laughter escaped her as the dimwitted cronies bellowed their delayed protests. Was this what it felt like, part of her wondered. Why bullies did what they did? The reaction she had elicited from the boys simply through the effort of wit and cheek had been unexpectedly…satisfying. That she could put into motion such an emotional response simply by stating a few words left her feeling powerful in a way. She felt justified, really. And for a fleeting moment, she almost felt as though the whole ordeal — the scene with the boy at the lake, the slighting and affront she had felt just now at the hands of Gray, and any of the rest in between — could be squared away.

The only break in her smugness came briefly with the sound of scraping chairs and movement as the two boys clamored to her feet. Were it not for the sounds of several other students also scrambling to their feet, the audible signs of impediment, and the calls of protests notably directed at the two boys, Evelynn might have dipped for her wand as a precautionary measure. As it was, she simply absorbed their furious insults. Used their ire to fuel the gratified smirk that plied her lips. Confidence roared silently within the Gryffindor as she stalked away from the scene unfolding at the Slytherin table. Away from the chaos she had sewn. Perhaps there was a little bit of trouble-maker in her after all.

So honed in on the shouts of anger was she, however, that she failed to give any real consideration to the sound of lighter steps approaching her. That attention was stolen the moment she felt a hand close around her wrist, and then a tug to pull her around. Irritation flashed across her face at the interruption, wanting nothing more than to return from where she had come and put this — and Gray — behind her. Unfortunately, she found him very much in front of her, and the anger so evidently twisting his features was enough to appease her own.

"Is that so?" she replied coolly. She eyed his fingers curled about the wrist of her now raised arm, then set Gray with an amused gaze, her brow cocking as a smirk pulled once again at the corner of her lips. "Or what?" She asked, her tone flecked with defiance. "It seems not only are your little cronies as dense as lead, but you're as delusional as you are tactless," she laughed. Then continued, her smirk breaking into a mocking grin, "Yes, do. Tell me how you got it into your head that I'm meant to be as you say."

"Is that so? she replied cooly, before raising her arm up to force Percy in letting go of her arm. He stared coldly into her eyes while she replied with a cocky smirk, almost as if she didn't care for his comments "Or what?" she added on with more defiance in her tone this time "It seems not only are your little cronies as dense as lead, but you're as delusional as you are tactless, yes, do. Tell me how you got it into your head that I'm meant to be as you say." finished Evelyn, who still had that small smirk at the corner of her lips. Percy stared silent at her for a few seconds, before suddenly letting out an arrogant chuckle "Yea, I know some of the lads are not the sharpest of tools but doesn't give you the right to berate them. And you... you're meant to be a Gryffindor, not a person who causes trouble wherever she walks. It almost makes me think you're one of those muggles or half blood mutants that haven't been trained to behave properly..." grunted Percy who slowly looked behind him and shook his head, disgusted that this situation even happened.

The Slytherin table beside them was to busy watching the commotion further to notice them arguing , and it wasn't a surprise that the two Slytherins who went after her were still at large. However, not a few seconds after some teachers began to get involved and dispersed some of the crowd looming in that one area. Percy slowly turned his head back around to face the troublesome student, his face full of disappointment "You know, I could keep talking to you "foolishly" but I dont think that stubborn, senseless and idiotic brain of yours will listen. So why dont you run along now, you undeserving brat" he with a small smirk of his own before putting a finger to the side of his head and spinning, indicating that she was a lunatic

The smirk upon her lips faded in favour of a skeptical loft of her brow as Gray attempted to educate her on the rights that she did or did not have. Instructing her on social etiquette as though he hadn't pushed a hapless, helpless Ravenclaw into the frigid waters of the lake and shown no remorse after the fact. She even went so far as to roll her eyes at his comment of her causing trouble wherever she walked. What a gross generalization there with his sample size of two. And when he suggested she were anything but pureblood, her expression, although not insulted, certainly gave the impression that he'd do best to mind his manners.

Whether he realized it or not, he had pegged her for what she was: a muggleborn. It was something she loathed to think about. She'd lived eleven years in ignorance. Eleven years without realizing that magic — as much as she had always fantasized that it could be — was, in fact, actually real. After receiving her letter and coming to Hogwarts, she had to face the fact that she was eleven years behind most of her peers in skill, in experience, in knowledge. And if knowledge was power, then she was powerless. Again. She had done much to rectify and make up for lost time, but one couldn't manage eleven years worth of learning in a matter of months. All the while, she had avoided topics around blood status and heritage and kept her opinions about them closely to her chest.

She was not fond of being found out. Thus, she neither confirmed, denied, nor gave any outward expression to give Percival any indication that he was right.

The involvement of authoritative figures in settling out the chaos at the table drew Evelynn's attention along with Gray's. She watching them passively for a moment, likewise annoyed that the situation had blown to such proportions. All she had wanted to do was return a stupid coat like she had promised. Had Gray been even an ounce less of a ponce, she'd even have repaired and cleaned the coat for him, since she would have done previously anyway if she had noticed the less than ideal condition. And somehow, somehow, this was her fault. The disappointed expression he fixed her with moments later was met with her own unimpressed exterior.

"Well…You went ahead and stopped me while I was already running along. If you wanted me gone, why bother? Unless you just wanted the satisfaction of saying it yourself, maybe?" She replied, tilting her head slightly as her cool, stormy gaze wandered the features of his countenance. "And here you are, labelling and making assumptions and spitting out insults when a simple little 'thanks' could have spared you all this supposed headache. I'm sorry that the coat wasn't up to your standards. Had you pointed it out nicely, I could have fixed it for you. Not that I could see you wearing it again anyway, since it was touched by muggle scum.

"Anyway, I suppose you had best stay away, then, and keep to your little snake pit," she drawled, casually starting to turn away from him, hands slipping into the pockets of her robes. "Wouldn't want you to get caught up in any more trouble."

"Well…You went ahead and stopped me while I was already running along. If you wanted me gone, why bother? Unless you just wanted the satisfaction of saying it yourself, maybe?" she replied back to him with a stormy gaze, not fazed by his insults by the least. However, stopping her for the satisfaction of saying it himself was not the reason of her stoppage, all he wanted was to prove a point "And here you are, labelling and making assumptions and spitting out insults when a simple little 'thanks' could have spared you all this supposed headache. I'm sorry that the coat wasn't up to your standards. Had you pointed it out nicely, I could have fixed it for you. Not that I could see you wearing it again anyway, since it was touched by muggle scum." added on the girl to his annoyance. Although Percy didn't show it, he was really getting flustered from what she was saying. The coat was her job to look after and hers alone, not anyone else. And the last thing she said... about the muggle wearing his coat. In all honesty, he didn't give a damn if a muggle wore the coat, as long as it was still in pristine condition everything fine. but in this case the thing was an absolute shambles.

When he listened to her speak his face still kept that stone cold, emotionless facial expression. Although, something looked noticeably off. The corner of his mouth was now showing a small smirk, as if he was physically trying to fight off any anger that would show off his true feelings about the situation "Anyway, I suppose you had best stay away, then, and keep to your little snake pit," she drawled, casually starting to turn away from him, hands slipping into the pockets of her robes."Wouldn't want you to get caught up in any more trouble." said Evelyn who was starting to walk away now. Percy wanted to stop her again and give the overconfident girl a piece of his mind, but even he knew that it wouldn't bear fruit. He slowly places one hand into his robes and watches as he continues to walk down the row "Watch yourself... even words can come back to hurt you" Percy said while she got further away from him, warning her to not test him in the future confrontations they are destined to have.

What she would give to have learned the tongue-locking jinx by now. Next to the Mending Charm and the Cleaning Charm, it would possibly have been the most useful for her. As the months wore on it seemed as though more and more students just did not know when to shut up. That notion could not be more clear as Gray spoke up, yet again, as she took her leave. Just had to get the last word in, she supposed. She could only imagine the look on his face. A sneer, probably, but she didn't care to turn around to confirm or refute the assumption. Nor did she deign to give any response. If he wanted the last word, she wasn't going to stoop to his level to fight for it.

Instead, she just rolled her eyes, adopted a forced smile and lifted her hand to wave fingers over her shoulder in a silent toodles. If he took issue with her returning of the coat, there was little she could do about it. Having long since tired of this facade, she was more than happy to be left to take her leave, hoping against hope that she wouldn't again be required to deal with his abhorrent presence any longer than was necessary in classes.

But as she wove lithely between seat and student along the tables to return to her own, there was something that unsettled her. That coat hadn't looked like that when she had prepared it for its return. Wanting to avoid any reason to stir trouble, or any reason to hear his snide remarks, she had deliberately taken care with the garment, even going so far as to make use of the mending charm, having noted a couple of snags where stones or twigs must have left there mark. She had brushed it down as well, using the garment brush she had brought from home for her own overcoat. It was...strange. The only explanation she could think of was sabotage... but then, she could think of no reason for anyone to go to such lengths. Or when...
