I Just Don't Get It!
Class wasn't much different whether you were a muggle learning the basics of arithmetic, or a new wizard going through a lesson on basic charms. Unless you were Eiran, who was sitting at one of the long tables with a pile of books in front of him and absolutely no idea what was going on. The professor was going on and on about something, but it took all of Eiran's focus to stay awake let alone understand any of it. He wasn't a stupid kid. In fact, the boy was intensely invested in learning all about magic and the components of it - but this particular topic just wasn't meshing. With a sigh the boy tossed his quill down and rubbed his tired eyes, eager to move on from this class.
Blackburn had quoted the first-year's Standard Book of Spells when they said, "a charm adds certain properties to an object or creature..." so he grabbed his quill and jot that down, but a second later he scratched it out hastily; it was in his textbook so why bother writing it down again? He was overthinking everything and being an idiot. There was a mention of jinxes, "like hexes and curses, they are dark magic and are not to be covered in this class," that, he did make note of. Dark magic sounded interesting because of the danger it presented - Eiran assumed that they'd learn enough in the Defense class later, but it was good to know that such things existed.
Lastly, he heard the professor mention, "Please turn to chapter two and bring out your wands. We will spend the rest of the class going over the use of the Lumos charm." And collectively the first-years grabbed wands from their pockets, sleeves, or the tables where they lay. Eiran grabbed his, and began reciting the incantation: "Lumos," nervously.
The end of his wand sputtered in the manner of a birthday sparkler for a moment, but then it fizzled and went dark.

Jason moved in his seat around doing a little dance seeing how he could barely contain his excitement. A wide grin was spread across his face as he stared up at the professor. It was pretty shocking actually. Jason hadn't smiled one time during his entire stay here. He was still recovering from the shock of being in Slytherin like his father was many years ago, but had grown to accept the fact. However, just because Slytherin was his house doesn't make him a bad person.
It didn't make any of his housemates bad people either. It was just a bad stereotype invented many years ago. Sadly, a stereotype that can hold true to this day. He shouldn't try to think about something so depressing. It was magic time! Jason has his book spread out in front of him after adjusting it so many times. He didn't want his classmates annoyed that his things were in their space. Oh, how he wished the tables had more room.
Jason followed along with the rest of the class while hastily writing notes. It was one of their first classes so it wasn't that difficult to follow with the professor, but that wasn't an excuse to lack off. He raised his wand with the rest of the class as they were about to perform the basic wand lighting charm. He gave a deep breath in to relax before chanting the incantation in a small whispering tone. "Lumos."
His side of the classroom was engulfed in a bright flash for a moment before the glow quickly died down. His wand had a small glow that gave a good amount of light around him. Jason couldn't help but smile at his own performance.

I Just Don't Get It!
One by one, students raised their wands and tried their hand at making them glow. Eiran wasn't sure if the wand itself was supposed to glow or if the magic was meant to sprout from it, like a fountain of light. He raised his hand for a second to ask - only to realize that some of the students were looking at him like an alien, and others had begun to snicker. The majority was still busy fiddling with their magic and so they didn't see his small social blunder; perhaps it wasn't a common thing for students in the UK to raise their hand in order to ask for things? Everything seemed a bit more proper here. Eiran's hand went down hastily enough, and then he grabbed for his wand again.
Whatever he was meant to look for, he still hadn't made the light appear. Others could. Other students looked as if they had already mastered this trick with ease, and a few of the other Slytherin students (and a good chunk of the Ravenclaws) were waving about wands that carried light, like glow-sticks. A few of them weren't as strong and they strobed, and Eiran was briefly fixated - but then a student near to him caused quite a big flash, and his attention deviated.
"How did you do that?" He queried of the boy a few seats away from him - and a few of the kids snickered again. The professor had gone over how to do this and it seemed like an innate skill that students should pick up without issue, but Eiran felt all hot-and-bothered by his lack of ability. Surely if he continued to struggle with a simple bit of magic like this, they'd figure out he didn't belong here - then what would he do?

Mia turned and looked at the other boy, the completely clueless one, grim. These were her fellow Slytherins? How pathetic She thought. She waited a second, and then turned to the boy, just as he asked for help.
"You're doing it wrong. Let me show you."
She held her wand out and showed him how she flicked it, and how she uttered the word.
"Lumos"
Her wand glowed brightly. She let it fall down on the table, and, and quickly uttered the counter spell.
"Nox"
She turned around, her back to the clueless Slytherin boy, not waiting for a reply, or any type of thank you. She was a Slytherin after all, and an Alexander at that. She wouldn't base her life on others approval.
"Mia Alexander, Pure-Blood, if you care to know...but you already probably do."
She said, with her back turned to him. Her family was notorious..and a Slytherin? He would definitely know. Though he did seem Irish...that was interesting. There were not many Irish kids at the school. She debated for a bit whether to ask him where he was from, or even who he was. She did not remember him from any other place, even the Commons or the Small Hall. Maybe he was a potential friend, even though he was not of her family's status, or at she thought he wasn't. She pause and then turned around again, carefully calculating her movements.

I Just Don't Get It!
Aurelia turned the pages of her book to chapter 2. She produced her wand from her sack. She waved her wand,"Lumos," she said leisurely and a warm white glow was emmited. Being a pureblood, with coaching from her parents, it allowed her to cast basic charms without even trying. "Lumos," she said again but in a sharper tone. The light shined brighter with her voice. She placed her wand down and the light slowly faded away. She placed the wand down beside her. She decided not to use the counter spell yet. The others weren't as fortunate to have pureblood parents to tutor them.
After ten minutes, the Otha few students were till struggling with the most basic of spells,"Lumos". There was anothe girl with light brown hair. She flicked her wand and a bright light flashed, blinding Aurelia. Her hand instinctively flung up to shield her face. The brunette look at the boys who were struggling with grim expressions. She showed them how it was done again, she stated she was trying to help them, but Aurelia only saw her showing of and trying to prove that she was better than the other beginners. The brunette introduced herself boastfully. Aurelia shook her head and sighed. She would never do that, it was in her nature to be humble.
