Annabelle smiled in satisfaction. She’d found the library. Picking her way across tables, she found one that wasn’t taken and gazed at the hundreds of shelves. I could go through this place forever and still not read everything, she thought. Annabelle got up from the chair and started at one of the shelves. I’ll just start with two books.
Annabelle glanced around at the titles, trying to find anything about phoenixes. They didn’t have anything on phoenixes at home, but she was very interested in them. She found one: A Guide to Phoenixes by Ophelia Brayer. Simple enough. It took a while to find anything within the trillions of books, but she finally found something else. Phoenixes: Nature’s magnificent firebirds.
Happily settling down in her table, Annabelle was content to just sit and read. After going through the first chapter of her book, she blinked as she noticed someone had sat down beside her. A wizard like me? Are theyRavenclaw? Are they a first year, too? If they aren’t, could they show me around maybe?
Annabelle opened her mouth but closed it again. Was there a worse way to start introductions than asking a tornado of questions? Annabelle sighed and tried to focus on her book again.

Janet sat down next to a girl on an empty looking table and wondered what house she was in. Maybe she was a Ravenclaw, she looked quite clever and seemed to read that book very quickly turning the swiftly and scanning her eyes down the page. Janet sighed and looked down at her homework, she probably should have payed more attention in potions the other day. Janet sneaked a glance at the other girl again and suddenly she suddenly spotted her blue tie confirming her suspicions of her being a ravenclaw. Maybe she should introduce herself? after all she now had a one friend in every single house except ravenclaw, so it would be quite nice to have a wide variety of different friends, and who knows? maybe she could even help her understand this stupid potions book she had to read! Janet and smiled across the table at her and said,
"Hi, my name's Janet what's yours?" she looked down at the book she was reading and said, "Oh is that about Phoenixes? I love them! they are so fascinating and pretty aren't they? I love how they burst into flames when the are old and then are reborn from the ashes an-" She stopped herself from poring out every thought she had ever had about phoenixes, she was a very talkative person and when she had an opinion she like to say it out loud, this often caused people to get annoyed since they wouldn't be able to get a word in between. She didn't want this new person to feel like that as she was hoping she would be friends with her, so she stopped herself from commenting on how she had once dreamed to own a phoenix and gave this other girl a chance to reply.

The girl beside her started to talk. Annabelle closed her book, sure to slide the ribbon in as a bookmark, and looked up.
She asked my name. Answer, Annabelle. Basic human interaction. Just because you’re in a new, super weird place, doesn’t give you the right to give one-word answers to some innocent girl.
“Oh. Uh, I’m Annabelle.”
Don’t be so awkward. Don’t sit there and stare. You can have conversation too! Annabelle pushed the thoughts away. “Yeah, phoenixes really are amazing. I didn’t know much about them before I came- well, I still don’t, but this is a really good book on them.”
Annabelle looked at the book the girl, Janet, was reading. “Potions? I’ll have to read that when I start classes, I guess. I haven’t started yet. I just got here yesterday. I don’t think they’d be my favorite thing, but it sure won’t be dull!”
Annabelle wasn’t sure why she was hesitant about talking. Maybe it was because Hogwarts was so mysterious. Annabelle was always desperate for knowledge and felt much better the more she knew about a subject. Trying to get more information about the girl, Annabelle took a sneak peek at the girl’s cloak. Gryffindor.
I’m about as far from a Gryffindor as there is. But they do say opposites attract...

Janet grinned at her,
"ooh i love the name Annabelle! I once had a muggle friend called that! and I don't like potions homework very much but the lessons are more interesting than i thought they were going to be! I prefer practical work to writing essays and reading books, although i do enjoy reading fiction very much!" She said, "What do you think your favourite subject is going to be? I love Charms and I'm not that bad at it! and flying is so thrilling! And I'm going to try out for the team soon! I doubt I'll get it though, haha. And Transfiguration is also fun! but I'm not very good at it, I only just succeeded yesterday in turning my paperclip into a button, but since then I think I've sort of got the knack of it n-"
Janet shook herself roughly, she was doing it again! Annabelle must think she was very annoying and self-centred.
"get a GRIP!" she told herself firmly, "You aren't going to make any friends around here if you are so talkative all the time, they'll all think you're super annoying." She sighed, great, just great, now she was talking to herself.

Annabelle blinked are Janet, a little surprised at the outburst. She sorted through all of the questions Janet had asked.
“Okay... well, practical work as opposed to reading. It depends on what we’re doing. If I could take care of an injured Phoenix, I’d totally prefer that over reading. But writing is really fun, if it’s about a topic you like
I also like writing fiction. It’s nice to know how you can kinda create your own story.”
At this point, Annabelle knew she was blabbing a bit. But who cared?
“My muggle school was okay, so so think I’ll like Hogwarts here even better. I’m very eager for Care of Magical Creatures and Transfigurations. Flying sounds fun, but Quidditch just sounds dangerous. I don’t really care for anything else, besides a Patronus! They sound awesome. Although if I met a dementor I’d be to scared to cast the spell, most likely.”
Annabelle looked at Janet. ”And don’t beat yourself up for being awkward socially with me. We can just be awkward friends.” She said the last word tentatively. She was pretty sure Janet would be happy with being friends. But Annabelle wasn’t exactly an expert on social situations like these.

Janet laughed, "Thanks, That'd be great!" She said, "I am super awkward."
Janet glanced at her watch and hurriedly snapped shut her potions book and got up from the table she had got very distracted and had lost track of time, she was cutting her meeting with her other friend very short, there was only 7 minutes left of lunch! "I need to go meet with my other friend soon, I told her that I would finish my essay with her in the common room this time," She said quickly, "It was really nice meeting you! Maybe we could meet here again some time? Well, bye!" Janet smiled at her again and waved as she ran in between the bookshelves trying not to crash in to one and at the same time hoping she wouldn't be seen by the strict librarian running. She felt pleased and happy that she had made another nice friend so soon after joining, Janet remembered how the sorting hat had almost put her in Ravenclaw, how could it have thought she would do well in the house with all the smart and responsible people were? She was almost as far away from that description as she was from slytherin...
