Trees loomed up all around. Dark and tall, with branches that twisted to tangle in the canopy and block out all but the faintest glimmer of the moon where it peaked in from behind the cracks in the foliage to dapple the forest floor. From darkness had the path that cut through the trees emerged, and into it once again would it vanish into the unknown. It was a plain and simple dirt trail, marked by naught but a boulder that stood sentinel nearby. It almost looked half carved.
It was silent. Eerily so. A silence so heavy and pronounced that it was deafening. A pressure so forceful that lead the ears to hurt and ring, and the head to pound. A silence that led the imagination to wander and snap to the smallest infraction that dare disturb the unholy sanctuary. A silence that boded unwell for that which was to come.
A chill wind picked up. With it came an icy touch to creep through the layers of linen robes and woolen cloak. Frozen fingers curled around her core where she stood, rooting her to there on the path. She was blinded, too. Crimson tresses whipped around her face, and hands fought to keep them from obscuring her vision. Despite this, there was no howl of rushing air between the trees, no rustle of leaves upon high, nor even the stirring of those that lay upon the forest floor. Just silence. She turned on the spot, holding her hair back, eyes wide with her attempt to peer into the black dread that surrounded her.
Although she could not find the culprit, she could feel the eyes upon her. She was being watched.
A parched tongue washed over cracked lips, and a shiver racked through her. Try as she might, she could not place where she was, or how she might have gotten here. There was no sign of horse, nor broom, nor tracks of car wheels in the frozen ground. Looking down upon herself then, she realized she was awash in blood. Whose? Fingers fell to the stained robe and pulled away...crimson. It was fresh. But she felt no pain. Could find no source. She pawed at herself, plucking at her clothing, trying desperately to find out where the blood was coming from.
She was still attempting to puzzle out that oddity when the shrill screech of an avian ripped through the trees. Thoroughly startled by the unexpected noise, she spun to face the direction from which it had come. Just as she caught site of a tawny owl, her foot caught on a root. She stumbled. A clumsy step back and then another. She tried to halt herself from falling and managed to catch a hand upon the boulder to stay herself the tumble. The shrieking continued, but movement beneath her hand forced her eyes to peel away from the distant shrill. Looking down at the massive stone, she realized it was not a boulder at all, but a statue. A beast. With angled features, fanged canines, and sharp claws. And it’s eyes were open. As she snapped her head back from the crimson pools, it threw back its head and lunged.

Evelynn snapped awake in a cold sweat. Her chest heaved with apparent exertion, the sharp intakes of air only serving to further dry a mouth that was already tacky and parched. Frantically, she darted her gaze around in an attempt to get her bearings. But even once she realized she was securely in her dorm ─ safe within the walls of the Dragon's Den ─ solace was difficult to grasp. The coverlets upon her bed were less so, and as she slowly regained control to steady her breathing, she looked down to see the whites of her knuckles. As though to anchor herself, her fingers had grasped tightly around the covers. They must have done so for some time, she couldn’t help but note, for their release was a difficult and almost painful process.
Closing her eyes, she tried to take a long, steadying breath. A dream. That was all it had been. Just a dream. No matter how many times she silently repeated that to herself, however, she just couldn't quite get the image out of her head. Of Aurelia, unconscious, being carried into the hospital wing; of the blood drenching her neck and robes; of the concern spoken in the nurses' voices. And then the eyes that Evelynn herself had seen. Sure, it was just a dream, but that didn't dismiss the terror she had felt. What she could only assume Aurelia had felt.
Unbidden, hot tears streamed down Evelynn's cheeks. She was glad, then, for the hangings of her four-poster bed. Usually, she left them open, welcoming the drafts and the way it made her feel closer to her dorm-mates, but she had closed them last night. None of her peers would see her crying this morning.
The faintest of grey light began to bloom between the slits of curtains when the tears finally ebbed. Morning, Evelynn acknowledged as she peaked out from her bed towards the windows, must just be beginning to dawn. Daybreak. The time had come, then. Resolving herself to make good on her promise, she wiped away the last hints of her fear. This wasn't the time for that. She knew how to defend herself against the creatures, if one were to show itself, and she had someone relying on her to help them find their wand. This time, the set of steadying breaths did suffice to settle her emotions, and Evelynn dressed quickly and efficiently, stowing her wand in her robes within easy reach.
Then, with little more than a quick glance back into the room to make sure she hadn't caught the attention of any of her fellows, she padded down the stairs to the Gryffindor common room to meet up with Aurelia.

Aurelia blinked her eyes open to the comforting light of dawn. The first thing she’d notice was the aching on her neck. Surprisingly, despite the ordeal she had went through, Aurelia had quite a good night’s sleep. It was fortunate that she found a bit of sleeping draught left for if it was not for the potion, the girl could only assume that she would have stayed up all night.
At this time of day, her roommates were still fast asleep. Aurelia made her way down to the common room to find that Evelynn had gotten there earlier and was waiting hopefully for not too long. “Good morning Evelynn, I hope you had a good rest,” Aurelia said with a smile.
Although the wounds on her neck was mended with a spell a mere day ago, an ugly scar was left in its place which could only Aurelia pray would fade and become less prominent like the others on her body she had accumulated over the years through the endeavours of Hogwarts. It was early in the morning. The breakfast in the great hall would not start but in two hours They’d more than enough time to retrieve her wand before the classes started.
It was about ten minutes of navigating through the confusing corridors of Hogwarts did they reach the entrance of the owlery’s stairwell. Aurelia started up the steps and it was not to long before she reached the top. Even from behind the door could she detect the faint smell of blood. Her blood. With a pull of the door, Aurelia would allow Evelynn to enter before she did.

Evelynn had been sitting in one of the armchairs by the empty hearth as she often did on mornings such as this when sleep evaded her. Only this time, she didn't have a text propped open in her lap. Instead, she had laid herself sidewise, head resting on one arm of the chair, while her legs dangled over the other. Her feet tapped restlessly against the side of the chair while she stared, almost upside down, absently studying one of the nearby tapestries. The art of the castle always intrigued her, but she found the tapestries of the common room particularly interesting; perhaps because she wasn't accustomed to seeing anything other than stretched canvas used as an art platform.Interacting with @Aurelia Notrésvace
She was examining the needlework of the lion when the echoing tapping of footsteps grabbed at her attention. Snapping her gaze to the stairwells, she caught sight of a figure emerging into the common room. Perfect. In a flourish of red hair and black robes, Evelynn hopped to her feet and snatched up her bag.
"Good morning!" She replied brightly, relieved to see that her senior was smiling and in good health. Or so it seemed, at least.
As Aurelia passed her to head for the portrait hole that exited to the castle proper, Evelynn glanced at her neck. She couldn't help but wonder if there would be any lingering effects. Ever since Professor Equinox had made mention of the presence of dhampir ─ including himself and an untold number of unnamed students ─ in the school, she had dove into research about them. Although she was far from collecting a satisfactory amount of concrete evidence, she had read some contradictory anecdotal articles about whether or not a dhampir's bite could turn a human.
She hoped not.
For the ten minutes or so that they navigated the corridors, Evelynn had a difficult time keeping herself from looking at the ragged scar on Aurelia's neck. Once or twice, she even found her own hand lifting to massage gingerly at her own, as though feeling to see that she was still intact herself. Even after the night terror that had visited Evelynn in sleep, she could only imagine what that must have been like for her upperclassman. Not that she wanted to imagine it at all. Still, she just couldn't seem to shake the thoughts, and found herself consumed in a tremulous silence throughout their short journey.
It wasn't until a strong scent of iron washed over her that she was drawn from thought. They had come to the threshold of the owlery, and there was no question about what scent accosted them. It was blood. She stopped, stiffening when Aurelia opened the door...
And Evelynn faltered.
Why had she come here? What if the dhampir was still inside? What if it was waiting to finish Aurelia off? What had she gotten herself into? She had been so quick to offer help; so assured in her desire to offer comfort and be of assistance, but who was she kidding? She was only a first year, and with only a basic understanding of magic and library of spells. Sure, she could cast lumos but what good would that be, really, against a beast that was faster...stronger...hungier. This wasn't some game. This wasn't a roll of the dice that she could groan about after. She could die...
But that was why she had come, wasn't it? A little voice spoke up inside of her, a spark to remind her of her purpose. She was here because someone almost had. Sure, she wasn't perfect. And sure, in retrospect, Aurelia probably would have been better off telling her to shove off and enlist the help of an older student or prefect instead. But she hadn't. And they were here. And right now, Evelynn was all that stood between a potential dhampir and Aurelia. She couldn't back down now.
With a steadying breath, Evelynn swallowed her fear and took a step. And another. And then another after that. And eventually, fingers clutched tight around the handle of her polished cypress wand, crossed through the barrier into the owlery.
"Lumos," she said, raising her wand high.
Even with the growing light of the morning, she rationalized, it didn't hurt to light it as a precaution. Plus it would help route out the shadows in the dark corners of the room to find Aurelia's wand. But it wasn't her wand for which Evelynn looked first; it was any sign of danger. Left and right and left again, she panned the magical torch. To her relief, the tower room was empty but for the hundreds of owls, hooting softly with their arrival.
"Do you remember where you were?" Evelynn asked, finally turning to address Aurelia. "We could start looking there."

Despite being in the house of the chivalrous and brave, Aurelia was not fearless. Sure, she did put up a strong front like the stereotypical aristocratic pureblood she was, but even then, fear affected the novice monster hunter -- albeit a little less than most. Here, standing outside the very space where she came so close to death less than a day ago, surfaced the recollection of the traumatic incident as well as a feeling of heavy foreboding. Fear.
There were only two things to accomplish: find the wand, cover up the evidence. Once these simple errands were accomplished, she would be on her way. Following Evelynn, Aurelia entered through the threshold. The Gryffindor had not at all realised she was holding her breath until her entire being told her otherwise and she inhaled, filling her lungs with the sharp pungent scent of blood.
Blood. Bright crimson painted the dull cobbled floors, complemented with handprints of the same shade, part of the wall to the left of the room was damaged from the misaimed spell (knockback jinx) she used at the dhampir while disoriented. The little pieces of shattered stone remained on the nearby ground. The whole scene was much like a crime scene, one that she would have to cover up.
The sudden glow of luminescent white light caused her eyes to narrow in order to adjust to the unexpected brightness. Turning back to the younger girl, her eyebrow arched upwards slightly, wordlessly questioning her choice of action. There was certainly no need for the wand lighting spell given the already present light of early day filling the room. Regardless, Aurelia did not bother to ask.
"Do you remember where you were?"
Asked Evelynn. Aurelia did. In fact, the little monster hunter remembered every single disturbing detail of the entire incident. Responding to the girl's question, her eyes scanned across the small vicinity. There were trails of blood, the marks of dark red, obvious signs that she had put up a struggle.
Right opposite the damaged wall, in a shadowed corner laid the all too familiar thin piece of wood. In a few strides, Aurelia made it across the room and picked the tool from the ground. Only inches from where the tool laid was a pool of blood, despite being left for the entire evening, the blood had not yet dried and was still moist. This was where she had lost consciousness.
"Got it." Aurelia told the girl. The first task accomplished. Now, the only thing left was to clean up all the evidence of the attack. Nobody, except the first year would know about the dhampir attack. "Ill clean up the place and we can head out of here," The third year steadied the wand in her hand, prepared to cast the scouring charm.

All color drained from the redhead's face. She wasn't sure what to expect in their morning escapade back to the owlery — back to the scene of the attack — but it certainly wasn't this. Blood. There was so much Blood. It was like someone had been murdered here. Which, granted, someone almost had. Evelynn could feel a churning in the pit of her stomach, a constriction in her throat, as she cast a furtive glance in her elder's direction. Had those been her palms imprinted on the floor? Evelynn could only imagine (and imagine she did) the horror she must have felt. The terror. The agony.
As the corners of her eyes pricked painfully, Evelynn tried not to think about it. Instead, she attempted to recall some of the stories her mother had told her of the hospital. Of the traumas in the emergency bay. She should be stronger than this. Evelynn swallowed. Then cleared her throat. Glad for the momentary distraction of Aurelia retrieving her wand to allow herself to try to regain some composure. But even after her upperclassman returned, Evelynn still felt…rigid. Like her body was on lockdown. Perhaps she shouldn't have come. She didn't want to be here. Yet she couldn't move. Like a deer in headlights.
Aurelia's words sounded muffled somehow, as though Evelynn were hearing them while submerged under water. And yet they seemed enough to slowly draw her attention back to the matter at hand. To remind her that she wasn't here alone and that she was now in the presence of someone far more capable than herself. Even still, Evelynn could hardly find her voice. Could think of nothing to say in this moment. She could only nod her head, and nod she did. A small, slight dip of her chin as her eyes continued to dart around the circular den: from crimson hand prints, to the sticky pool of blood, to a smear of brown where it appeared a body may have been dragged, and then to broken bricks. She focused on the lattermost. That and the low hoots and shuffling feet of the owls overhead. She was safe, she reminded herself. Nothing would dare attack them in broad daylight. She hoped.
"Nox," she muttered under her breath after another scrutinizing glance around (not that she was paranoid or anything). The light of her wand dimmed, their environment now illuminated only by the soft glow of morning rays as they filtered through the large open windows. Then, padding quietly towards the wall and tapping her wand against the damaged spot, "Reparo."
As the stone molded itself together and the pieces that had been chipped away flew neatly back into place, Evelynn turned around, sheepishly asking, "What are you going to do now?"
It wasn't something she felt particularly keen on asking. Not something that she questioned in the hopes for gossip or to sate a curiosity. The sick feeling in the pit of her stomach had returned as her mind had wandered towards the unknown identity of the attacker. She didn't feel particularly keen knowing that there was someone among them capable, and apparently willing, to do harm. For all she knew it could be someone in her own dorm. Someone who slept (did dhampir even sleep?) no more than a few meters from her.

To be honest, Aurelia was not quite sure what her plans were after she had this task check from her list. the thought about encountering the blood-sucking creature so soon after her recovery was beguiling was far from anticipated. Although the Monster Hunter would not admit, fear still gripped onto her, crawling underneath her nonchalant facade. Yet she knew that her aggressor may suffer worse consequences if she did not extend her help. The Monster Hunter was well aware that unwilling blood was a detriment to those half-breeds.
Aurelia had expected that the younger Gryffindor, as it was common in most young folks like her to possess a natural curiosity, would ask more questions in-depth to the horrifying experience. Fortunately, that was not the case and Aurelia was more than contented with the circumstance. The other Gryffindor proceeded to cast a skilful charm at the wall, mending the bricks expeditiously.
With a wave of her wand and an incantation, the blood-stained floor bubbled in soap and a few moments later was in a much better condition without a splatter of crimson red. There was no more evidence, they had covered all up.
"Well, all that needs to be done has been accomplished. We can leave now. " The fourteen-year old stated simply, turning on her heels and striding towards the exit.

It took a moment for Aurelia's words to sink in. Somehow, Evelynn had been expecting...more. Naturally it made sense that the girl would want to erase any traces of what had happened, to limit the amount of questions posed and suspicions raised. Especially after having endured such an obviously traumatic encounter, the little redhead could perfectly understand why the girl might want to avoid any unnecessary inquiries.
Even still, having seen what she had seen and having been introduced to the crime scene, Evelynn now felt as though she were part of it in some way. It was as though she had been handed a box of secrets and told to keep it well guarded, but that the box already had a lock upon it that she was unable to open. Aside from accompanying to provide some measure of meager protection in the event of a repeat incident, what was the point if they were to simply go their separate ways now? It felt...unfinished.
"That's not..." Evelynn began, her stormy gaze flicking from her upperclassman to the last residual bubbles clinging vainly onto their limited viscous life. "That's not quite what I meant..." She countered lamely. Even as she did, her feet turned her around towards the owlery exit, expecting to be guided out of the owlery by the now well-armed third-year. "What about what happened? Are you going to talk to someone about it?"
There was a certain level of hesitation in her voice, a tone that suggested she wasn't really sure if she was supposed to be questioning the matter. On the one hand, she didn't want to press it. In her mind, she had already established that had the roles been reversed, discussing this with a stranger was probably the last thing she'd want to do. She'd probably want to forget it ever happened. On the other hand...it did happen. And what happened was something dangerous that potentially meant the rest of the students were also at risk. Her belief was firmly set that at least one authority figure should be informed.
"The teachers would want to know..." She suggested.

She had hoped to soon as before she took a step closer to the exit, came the girl's questions. Of course, Aurelia knew what Eveylnn meant by her last question, but she expected that the message she intended to give through her answer was clear enough: Aurelia was not keen at anyone else knowing about the attack. What was worse than the authoritative figures knowing about any unfortunate incident was the students themselves. Having been at Hogwarts for nearly three years, Aurelia was well aware of the rate at which rumours spread throughout the school.
Aurelia made a pivot, turning to face the girl, glancing down at the first year who was only a few inches shorter despite the difference of their ages. Only after letting out a sigh which left with a light air of aggravation had she started in all seriousness, "Evelynn, please do try to understand," Aurelia barely knew the girl, it had barely been a full day since they'd first met. Evelynn had been helpful, she would give that to her, but other than the fact that the younger Gryffindor provided some assistance, she was still very much of a mere acquaintance.
"What happened here was an accident. A terrifying one, but nevertheless still an accident." She continued. Howie never intended to attack her (or at least she hoped that was the case), it was the instincts that came with being a dhampir, more so an evidently juvenile one. "I cannot tell you why, but no one else should know about this." She said firmly before adding, "Moreover, it might cause students to panic."
The next few words were spoken with her tone of voice barely over that of a whisper, "The teachers would want to know, but they don't. Promise me you won't tell anyone."

Evelynn could only stand there, as though rooted to the spot, as Aurelia turned to face her with what explanation would be provided. The red head's gaze dropped, hovering around the knees of the other girl as the words washed over her. Try to understand. She would try. She was trying, but every time she did, the image of Aurelia's limp and bloodied form rose to the surface of the thoughts, the terror coiling in her belly threatening to overtake rational thought.
An accident. Could an attack really be an accident? Could someone — no, something — going on the attack to try to tear out another's throat really be considered an accident? Evelynn had seen the damage. It wasn't a mere bump, a little "oops, sorry, didn't see you there". There had been blood. A lot of it. Evelynn's gaze flicked to the spot on the wall where the stone where a small pile of rubble had existed moments before, acknowledging that presumably, Aurelia had tried to defend herself. There had been effort involved in this attack. Maybe it wasn't premeditated. Maybe it was circumstantial and situational, but not accidental.
Finding her mouth dry, the young lion flicked her tongue to wet her lips, peeling her gaze from the wall to find Aurelia's. There was definitely a mixture of emotion within Evelynn's eyes. Confusion, disappointment, uncertainty. Even a healthy dose of fear.
"I don't understand," she admitted quietly. "I…I think I get not telling another student. But why not the teachers? If there's someone around the school that's attacking other people… then they should know." The more she thought about it, the more it made sense. She could feel a sense of resolution building. "Especially if it was an accident. What if it happens again? What if it's someone else? What if the next person isn't… isn't so lucky. And they don't make it to the hospital wing." She licked her lips again, her gaze flicking this time to where the pool of blood had been as she dropped her voice to barely more than a whisper, "What if someone dies?"

A small part of her expectations had been fairly certain that the girl would oblige to her request to remained tight-lipped about the whole incident, but the contradicting response did not come as a surprise. Yet, her lips pursed into a thin line, clearly portraying the growing impatience under the collected facade. If one, especially with eyes as keen as the girl's, a subtle glint of reluctance in her eyes shown as she averted her gaze away from the other Gryffindors. Clearly, the third year had something to hide.
She exhaled, the breath of air carrying a hint of aggravation. Initially, she only agreed for the girl to tag along only because she needed some assurance. For being in the very place where she almost lost her life was certainly unsettling. However, now that all was accomplished and the evidence erased from existence, the girl's presence was no longer necessary. Surely, Aurelia was grateful that she had the courage to come along, but with all the questions she was arising, she was only proving to be an annoyance.
The third-year understood where those words and questions were coming from, she had all the rights to be concerned. However, Aurelia had not yet notified and subsequently gotten the instructions from her superior ar monster hunting, Grandmother Astrehilde. She feared nothing more than to disappoint the woman. Aurelia not could make her exit and part ways with the younger Gryffindor without the assurance that the rumours would not spread from her lips. The intervention of authority in the matter could be detrimental for her own cause, one way or another, establishing an agreement with this curious girl was crucial.
"I cannot put this in another way, but I will assure you that it is unlikely that another attack from the dhampir would happen again." In truth, Aurelia could not be more uncertain if Howie were to initiate another attack again. But he had his fill of blood, her blood and she could only hope that his hunger was sated for as long as it takes to get word to Astrehilde.
With a heavy sigh, Aurelia resulted in her last resort,"What does it take to prevent a telltale?" A favour for a favour, something in exchange for her part to cooperate. Surely a curious first year would have a want from the older girl. "Surely you want something as most people do."
"A few galleons? Some supplies? An alliance? A favour?
