Oakley was bored. There was nothing else to it. It was a free day, and he had exactly zero things to do. He had completed his homework, finished building all of his LEGO sets, and had lost interest in his big book of logic puzzles.
He trudged out of the boy's dormitories, sullen. He stepped onto one on the moving staircases in its brief moment of stillness. He looked discontentedly at one of the many holes in the walls that would led to a labyrinth of undiscovered hallways.
Oakley's head snapped up to look at the disconnected entrances. You could practically see a lightbulb pop up over his head. He could explore the castle!
Oakley had only been here for a short while, and in that time, had only really gone through the hallways in order to get to class, ignoring the other possibilities.
He sat a while and thought about his plan of action. Then scrapped it. This was an adventure! There was no need for planning!
He then realized he had no idea what he was doing, and came up with another plan.
He bounded down the steps and into a random hall. He strode down the empty hall, enthusiastically looking left and right. A faint sound echoed down the hallway. That sounded serious. What if a student was in danger?
Concerned, he ran down the hallway, sneakers slapping against the cold stone floor. Another sound echoed down the hallway, louder, yet still indiscernible.
He followed it to a door. The wood looked rotten, the handle looked like it had some sort of fungal growth on it, and the hinges were rusty. It was a very old and unkempt door. He pushed it open.

Dale sat on the floor of the abandoned bathrooms, something he did more than he ever wanted to. But today was a big day, a big big day. His thermite was done, well at least the first version. making good thermite was like an art form, it requires the perfect balance of compounds and heat, too much heat and the iron will melt, too little and nothing will happen. That where the glycerin came in, helping to superheat the mixture in just the right way.
Dale reached into his trusty bag and pulled out a little bag of reddish powder. Hopefully, if this worked, the thermite should "explode" into a column of fire, not too big, maybe afoot at max. Dale set the bag down on the ground and double-checked that no professors around, He went bag to his little baggie and pulled out his wand, it was tucked nicely into his shoe, standing it upright made it much easier to pull it out in tough spots, not that he ever found himself in anything like that.
Dale took a few steps back, so the erupting metal and burning plastic wouldn't hit him. He pointed his wand at the bag and readied his wand, as he cast the spell, he heard the doors open and some walk-in. Dale panicked for a moment, almost casting the spell wrong. Dale didn't know who this guy was, but he wasn't about to let him ruin a few weeks of prep, whoever he was, he was in for quite a show.. hopefully.
The reaction worked, but not in the way Dale hoped for, a column of fire about 6in went up, looking very cool. The reaction ended in under a minute, and after the matter, there was a small iron nugget where the bag was, still orange from the heat. Dale looked over to the boy, "H-Hey."

As he opened the door, he saw a bright light through the slightly opened door, which was not something commonly found in in abandoned rooms. He opened the door and cautiously stepped in the room. Just in time to see the show.
A column of fire went up with a whoosh that echoed in the abandoned bathroom, the tongues of heat licking at the air. It rose far higher than any fire Oakley had ever seen. The flames cast the room in a warm light, accentuating the shadows in the room. It ended after a minute or so, and left a little lump of shiny iron on the floor.
"H-Hey."
Oakley whipped around, just now spotting the boy on the far side of the room. He sat in a corner, far away from the scorch mark on the tiled floor. He blinked when Oakley looked at him, then smiled sheepishly and did a little wave.
Oakley was shocked. There was someone here? Near this dangerous area? He stared at the boy for a tense moment that seemed to stretch eons.
"What are you doing here?" Oakley finally shrieked, throwing his arms in the air. "You could've gotten hurt! Didn't you see that explosion over there?!"

Dale was kind of in shock, he didn't expect anyone to walk in and on top of that, he wasn't ready for their reaction either. The boy seemed genuinely scared of the "explosion" that had just occurred, well if you could consider that tiny column of fire an explosive, it was really pitiful, Dale knew he could do better, but for now, he had to find a way to make this kid stay silent. "Y-Yeah, don't worry about it, I was just testing s-some of my magic." Dale had gotten pretty good at lying, well at least compared to a few months back, his encounter with Kae still shook him up every now and again.
Dale got up and grabbed his bag off the floor, he still had 2 more bags of rust left, he would have to add more aluminum powder from the looks of this test, or maybe he would have to go through the rust to see if there's any glaring impurities in it, hard to do when your just one guy with no lab tools. But that was the challenge, right? to make good thermite without tools and stuff like that... why was he doing this again? for fun? sure, for fun.

Oakley looked at the concerned look on the boy's face. Maybe he overreacted. But to be fair, there was fire in an abandoned bathroom. Who knows what could have happened in the abandoned bathroom of the school where chemistry isn't taught. "Oh." The boy was practicing magic? That didn't look like any magic he'd ever seen. But then again, he had about a year's worth of experience just being around magic, so it wasn't like he was an expert. "Sorry, that's my bad." Oakley watched as the kid picked up his bag and dug around in it, then look thoughtful, staring off into absolutely nothing. Totally normal thing for someone to do. He was probably just checking his classroom notes again, you always need classroom instruction and specific notes to do a spell. That was how most other subjects worked. It should apply to magic.
He scratched the back of his neck. "It looks like we got off on the wrong foot. My name's Oakley." He held out his hand, a peace offering of sorts. He desperately hoped he didn't look like a fool. this was a very bad start to any friendship. It would have been better if he hadn't overreacted at the smallest look of fire. If only he had his book of emergency scenarios with him.

@Oakley BroodeDale was glad his lying worked for once, those few minutes spent "practicing" had definitely paid off, now the only thing left to do... escape. From what Dale had learned through his last few encounters was to get out as fast as possible, mostly to make sure the other person doesn't get suspicious of you, because as soon as they do... it's not gonna be fun.
But as soon as Dale was about to leave the other boy put out his hand and introduced himself... not a good a thing for Dale, in fact, it was pretty much the last thing he needed. If he left now without saying anything he would seem rude, and that was the last thing Dale wanted to do. So he shook the other guy's hand. "I'm Dale and don't worry about it. It was my fault for scaring you like that..." Dale didn't tell him his last name... to keep his identity a secret of course. It probably wouldn't even matter he was pretty easily spotted in a crowd most of the time. Mostly thanks to his height and face. Dale tried to think of an excuse to leave as fast as he could.
