Stagnant Waters

In hindsight, Saskia should have seen this coming. A Masquerade Ball? It was like the school was asking for a disaster to happen. The Blossom Balls in earlier years were proof that no ball could ever go right. Even the First Year Graduation Party was a mess and that wasn't even an official ball. She'd have to admit that a part of her was in denial. For once, she wanted something to happen that didn’t involve a sudden life or death situation. Maybe since it wasn't exactly the Blossom Ball, but a Masquerade Ball, maybe things would have been different. The Ilvermorny students were visiting as well, and any incident that happened on their visit would have reflected poorly on the hospitality of the school. What would they have thought about what happened? Worst of all, they could have been injured too. It was enough that the Hogwarts students had to go through that, but the Ilvermorny students never asked for it either. They were only visiting for a while, and if that was their biggest impression on the school, then who knew what the other schools would have thought about Hogwarts?
Another fire started. At this rate, it was a Hogwarts tradition to have a fire-related incident occur in these kinds of events. There was also that insane kid who showed up at the very last minute to eat people as part of his delusions, and even now, she didn’t know what was with that kid. But that was the least of her concerns. It was the part-giants she couldn’t stop thinking about. They might have been less uncanny than the crazy “Candy King”, and they were arguably less of a threat, aside from the fact that they tried to kidnap someone and attack anyone else who got in their way. But she could never forget what ultimately happened to them. It was difficult to forget one of the giants who ended up having a shoe lodged in their eye. The eye gore might have been scary, but what was even more frightening was that Saskia knew the giant would never be able to move again. The rest of the night was still a blur to her, but that was one of the things she could vividly remember. Seeing the giant lay limp on the ballroom floor- or was it his corpse now? She cringed at the thought of it. She wasn’t so sure what else happened to the other giant who accompanied the first giant, but it was safe to say that they didn’t get off so easily either. She was pretty sure both giants were taken care of, one way or another.
Saskia leaned back against the tree she was currently sitting on, crossing her arms and tilting her head upwards. Clouds covered up most of the sky, which was a hazy shade of blue with maybe some pink covering the horizon. The sun had already risen, a sign that the day had started. It was a perfectly normal morning before classes would have started. Wasn’t this supposed to be a good thing? After all that happened yesterday, this was supposed to be comforting. It was a change of pace from the chaos that happened last night. But why wasn’t that unable to put her at ease? Nothing else would happen right now. At least that was her common sense was telling her. But it did make enough sense for her to believe in it, even if her gut feeling was telling her otherwise.
Oddly enough, she couldn’t find it in herself to do anything, or feel anything for that matter. There was no doubt she was still feeling uneasy about what happened, but there wasn’t much else she felt. She should have felt angry. She could have so much more to help out at the Ball. All she did was extinguish a fire, slap a kid so he could stop dancing, and fend off some crazy cannibal kid, but that was mostly it. Was there something else she could have done? There probably was. But it was too late. What was done was done, and she had to deal with the fact that she was, quite frankly, useless. That was something to be mad about, right? But somehow, she couldn’t feel that either. She couldn’t even feel sad about it. She couldn’t do anything about that, it seemed. Life would go on, those feelings would eventually evaporate, and things would resume as if nothing had happened. Saskia would continue to look up at the morning sky with a frown on her face.
Merlin, she was pathetic.
