With the Holiday approaching, Veronica decided to stay behind. She couldn't stand being anywhere near her Mother, along with her family. Of course she doesn't mind some of them, especially her elder brother, Williams. He's the only person in her family that she actually doesn't mind. The only Muggle she didn't mind.

She couldn't stand Muggles. All because of what her mother believed. It was hard growing up in a house with a mother who believed that their child was a mistake. She didn't completely understand it, except for the fact that her mother had an affair with her father, whom her mother had divorced 20 years before Veronica was even born.

But that doesn't matter, what does, is the fact that her two eldest sisters married Muggles. How could they possibly even trust Muggles? After all they've done in the past towards those who have showed even a sliver of magical potential. It's unthinkable that two Pure-Bloods would even think about marrying Muggles. It was devastating news. It nearly drove her mother mad, had her father, well, step-father not been there to keep her mother sane. What also helped keep her mother sane is the fact that Belle, the eldest, married a Muggle born Wizard. It was the only thing preventing Veronica's mother from disowning her entirely. Tamzen, however, wasn't that lucky. Tamzen was cast out by Veronica's mother after the wedding. Although Tamzen had been nothing but kind towards her when she was a child, Veronica became angered towards the woman after she had married a Muggle. She even refused to talk to her whenever she came to visit her father.

Muggles, those born without magic, are a species all of their own. They shouldn't mix with Pure Bloods, such as herself. At least that's what she was lead to believe while growing up around her mother. Muggles ruined her family, and she hated them for it. It took away one sister, and nearly took away another, had it not been that he was a wizard. Veronica hated them, and believed that if given the chance, they'd return towards their primitive state of hunting Witches, as back during the Salem Witch Trials. She had done much research on the topic, as her mother's family had originated in Salem.

For over centuries, her family has delved into the arts of magic, a few along the way turned towards the dark arts, but those members were cast out, never to be heard from again. Veronica understood why. Although she disliked the thought of being around Muggles, even if they had magic, she didn't necessarily wish harm upon them. She just wouldn't trust one with her life. She hadn't met a muggle yet, that could change her mind on the matter.

Thankfully, remaining at the school, she wouldn't have to worry too much about it. Since she wasn't going home, she wouldn't have to be in her Step-Father's home which happened to be in the mist of a Muggle town. She shuddered at the though while flipping through her book. Reading seemed to be the only thing that could properly distract her from her thoughts. If she focused too much on everything, she wouldn't act like herself. Veronica could become easily angered by her own thoughts, and it annoyed her to no end. She wanted to remain the happy-go-lucky girl she attempted to appear to be.

Most people would associate her bright coppery hair with a bright personality. However, it's the complete opposite. She may show traits of a Gryffindor, she acts more like a Slytherin, mainly on her worst days. With the conflicting personalities of her mother and step-father, Veronica is a mix of both. Her mother, Tammara, is a Pure blooded witch, who just happened to be a Slytherin while attending Hogwarts. She showed all the traits of a slytherin, cunning, manipulative, prideful, anything one would associate with a slytherin, Tammara embodied. Carrington, Veronica's step father, was the complete opposite. As a Hufflepuff, Carrington was compassionate, happy-go-lucky, and humble. It was a miracle that two polar opposites even got together.

Flipping through another few pages of her book, Veronica let out a soft sigh. She's read the book enough times to know it by heart. It was a book that seemed to transport her to another world, a world of gods and mortals. That's what her mother believed she was at times, a god, and Muggles, the mortals who should worship those greater than themselves. Veronica tried her best to keep her mother's beliefs away from her, but it could be a waste of time, trying to keep her mother's influence away from herself.

With all the thinking she'd been doing, she'd been on the same page in her book for multiple minutes. At this rate she wouldn't be able to finish her book. Closing her book with a quick flip of her wrist, Veronica mumbled softly "Bloody Muggles," She believed that she mumbled it towards herself, however that wasn't the case. Looking up, Veronica was slightly startled by the sudden appearance of a male that sat across from her. She had no clue how long the male had been there. Her eyes instantly glued themselves to the colors of his robes, gold and red, her house’s colors. She mentally smirked at how much rotten luck she was blessed with. The miffed expression on the boy's face lead her to believe that she must've somehow said something to offend the boy. Perhaps she mumbled something about her family, or he had hear her mumble about muggles. She had a tendency to mumble while thinking, a habit that her mother hated.

Veronica knitted her eyebrows as her green eyes slightly narrowed towards the boy. "Pardon me, by why do ya look miffed? Did I say somethin' to offend ye?" She wasn't sure why the boy was sitting across from her, let along why he gave her a miffed expression. She didn't even know who the boy was, so why was he so upset with a stranger. He mustn't be the brightest if he would get angry over what appears to be nothing. She hadn't even said a word towards the boy to earn such an expression. The boy scoffed before leaving her alone.

Now Jack enjoyed eavesdropping a little too much, especially when it came to the tables of other houses. Having finished his meal, he had gotten up to cross the Great Hall when he heard someone from the Gryffindor mutter something about muggles in a negative tone, causing him to pause. He had assumed most of the muggle-disliking students had been sorted into his own house, but evidently, there were others scattered about elsewhere as well. Perhaps the dislike of muggles was more prevalent than he'd originally guessed.

As he hunted for the owner of the opinion that had been voiced, the Slytherin first-year laid eyes on an irked-looking boy and he followed her gaze to a girl sitting across from him. Had she been the culprit? It was probable, for she was asking if she had said something to offend her fellow Gryffindor. Amused that not only had the girl insulted one of her own housemates but that she hadn't even seemed to have been aware of how, Jack decided to enlighten her. Walking up to her back, which faced him, he grinned and leaned over to speak so she would have no trouble hearing over the din of the Great Hall.

"You really have no idea why he gave you that look?" he asked the other redhead, looking as though he were trying not to laugh. "His parents could be muggles and you could have just insulted them. Wouldn't you be offended if some stranger insulted your parents for being what they can't help being?"

Veronica hated making others angry, but it couldn’t always be helped. The boy had no clue about her past, and she didn’t know his, nor did she really care to. With a heavy sigh she began to open her book once more.

Just as the book was opened to the page she had left off, Veronica felt a presence appear behind her. “You really have no idea why he gave you that look?” A soft yet mischievous voice questioned from behind her. In response, her body stiffened. She’s never had that kind of reaction towards someone before.

Slowly, the redhead turned around to face the owner of the mysterious voice. What surprised Veronica was the fact that the owner of the voice was a Slytherin. Why is a Slytherin over here? Was he listening the whole time?

The Slytherin boy looked upon her with an amused expression, like he was attempting to hold back a laugh. That upset the female. Why was the Slytherin looking like he was laughing at her? “No, I don’t. Why don’t you enlighten me, Snake.” She spat out her words. She didn’t understand why, but something about the boy irked her. Perhaps it was the color of his robes? That shouldn’t matter...perhaps the fact that he’s a redhead like her? No, that wasn’t it. Its the fact that he finds this amusing! Veronica finally decided on a reasoning.

“His parents could be muggles and you could have just insulted them. Wouldn't you be offended if some stranger insulted your parents for being what they can't help being?” Veronica’s eyes grew a fraction of their size before narrowing. “Like I bloody care! Muggles are horrible! They would persecute those who even show the slightest signs of magic. It’s a good thing that our worlds are separated.” Her mother’s influence is beginning to shine through once more. She knew that she needed to get away from the aggravating boy, but she couldn’t let this go.

As someone who regularly got on people’s nerves – both intentionally and unintentionally – Jack was not put off by the name the Gryffindor girl had given, nor the manner with which she addressed him. He continued to beam at her, as if aware it irked her, and laughed at her open opinion of muggles.

"Wow…And just how many muggles have you met, Miss Lioness?" he asked with an easy smile. "You sound like the only ones you know of are the ones who were involved with the Salem Witch Hunts." He crossed his arms haughtily, inclining his head as if to regard her better. "Let me guess. You a pure-blood?"

This conclusion had been drawn from the idea that the girl’s concept of muggles seemed to be so outdated that she had likely been sheltered from the modern muggle world. From what Jack had learned, pure-blooded families seemed to do their best to isolate themselves and their offspring from any contact or first-hand knowledge of non-magical folk, but the Slytherin didn’t think they were doing themselves or their kin any favors by it.

"You poor, ignorant, deprived child," Jack sighed over-dramatically, shaking his head in pity. "Alright, let me ask you this because I'm curious. If a muggle-born witch and a muggle-born wizard marry and have children, does that make their children pure-bloods, since both parents are magical?"

"Wow…And just how many muggles have you met, Miss Lioness?" The Slytherin Boy asked with an easy smile. "You sound like the only ones you know of are the ones who were involved with the Salem Witch Hunts." He crossed his arms haughtily, inclining his head as if to regard her better. "Let me guess. You a pure-blood?"

Veronica glared at the boy. “So what if I am?” She was well aware how the pure bloods would attempt to preserve their bloodlines. It was quite annoying actually. Although treated as a mistake, her mother would always remind her that she’s her mother’s last hope at preserving their bloodline, keeping it clean.

"You poor, ignorant, deprived child," The boy sighed over-dramatically, shaking his head in what appeared to be pity? Why would he pity her? "Alright, let me ask you this, because I'm curious. If a muggle-born witch and a muggle-born wizard marry and have children, does that make their children pure-bloods, since both parents are magical?"

Veronica was at a loss for words. She’d never been asked that question before. Her anger expression gave way to surprise and utter confusion. “I...” She was at a complete loss for words. The anger that she had been feeling moments before was slowly fizzling away. “That’s not possible. Muggle borns couldn’t possibly have pure blood!”

Everything her mother had told her when she was younger began to fall to pieces. “It can’t be possible, can it?” She looked up towards the boy with a heavy sigh. “So, are you a half-blood? Or a Muggle-born? And why do you care so much? I don’t even know you.”

It hadn't escaped Jack's notice that his first question had gone unanswered. He didn't comment on it, however, because from the tone of the girl's voice, she already sounded like she was starting to get defensive. The boy took that as a good sign; it meant she wasn't under any delusions that pure-bloods were perfect. If she was aware of that, then there was no need to mock her further about it.

However, he couldn't have asked for a better response to his question about muggle-borns starting a pure bloodline. The girl's flabbergasted face, the changing of her expressions in rapid succession, and her blatant loss of words caused him to burst into laughter. He clutched at his stomach, doubling over as she scrambled to come up with a reply. Something about it not being possible.

"Well," he gasped, once he was able to regain enough breath to speak again, "I guess that would depend on your definition of a pure-blood, wouldn't it?" His laughter still slowly dying down, he pressed, "I mean, who would be able to tell how long a line a pure-blood family is if everyone decides to keep quiet about it? Not like wizards and witches have anything like DNA tests, do they?" Hazel eyes glittering with mischief, he asked, "Who's to say you don't have muggle blood in you and you just don't know it? Aren't wizards and witches always messing with memory charms, anyway? There's a hundred ways the records could be tampered with. Can you really trust anyone to tell you the truth, especially if they can't even be sure?"

When asked about his own heritage, Jack straightened back up and shrugged. "Doesn't matter what I am. Or what you are. I just thought I'd let you know so you don't walk around like the rest of these ignorant morons who've got it stuck in their hard heads that it does matter. No one can tell the difference, so I really don't get what everyone's so worked up about." Jack stuck his hands in his pockets. "And it's not that I care. I just can't stand stupidity, so I try to quash it wherever and whenever I can. Hopefully, you're a little wiser for it - even if you are a Gryffindor," he added teasingly with a wink.

Veronica’s face turned a bright read once the boy began to laugh . His laugher continued to the point he was doubling over clutching his stomach. Her face co to used to turn a darker shade of red to match her hair. She couldn’t tell wether she was more angry or embarrassed. Jerk!

"Well," he gasped, once he was able to regain enough of his breath to speak again, "I guess that would depend on your definition of a pure-blood, wouldn't it?" His laughter still slowly dying down, he pressed, "I mean, who would be able to tell how long a line a pure-blood family is if everyone decides to keep quiet about it? Not like wizards and witches have anything like DNA tests, do they?" Loosing some of it’s redness, Veronica once more gave a look of confusion. “DNA?” She muttered softly, her voice suddenly loosing its volume.

Hazel eyes glittering with mischeif, he asked, "Who's to say you don't have muggle blood in you and you just don't know it? Aren't wizards and witches always messing with memory charms, anyway? There's a hundred ways the records could be tampered with. Can you really trust anyone to tell you the truth, especially if they can't even be sure?"

She glared at the boy. What he was suggesting was completely appalling. Having even the slightest bit of muggle blood would infuriate her family. Although she wouldn’t admit it, Veronica didn’t entirely mind the possibility of having muggle blood. She refused to show any indication that the idea of having muggle blood in her bloodline intrigued her. "And it's not that I care. I just can't stand stupidity, so I try to quash it wherever and whenever I can. Hopefully you're a little wiser for it - even if you are a Gryffindor," he added teasingly with a wink.

The boy however did have a point. How could she trust anyone to tell her the truth. “You...you’re right.” Her glare dissipated. “But you’re also wrong. If you say I can’t trust anyone, then how can I trust you? I don’t even know your name.”

What a priceless display of anger and embarrassment that was. And the note of confusion at her mention of DNA! Absolute gold.

When her sense of reason caught up with her, though, and her lion pride backed down, she actually admitted he was right, which surprised him enough to shut up his incessant laughter. But then she added that she also thought he was wrong, drawing a smirk from the Slytherin.

"Ah, ah, ah," he told her, obnoxiously wagging his index finger in her face. "I never said you could trust me, so how could I be wrong about that? I'll tell you now, it's a personal moral of mine never to lie because lying is too easy. I may tell a half-truth or omit something, but I don't lie."

He waved a hand dismissively. "Anyway, it's not like I claim to know anything about your heritage, so what's there for you to trust me about? I'm just making you aware that maybe you shouldn't believe just anything you hear, no matter who you hear it from. And that includes me."

The boy made a show of examining his nails. "If you want to know my name, you're going to have to do better than that. An even trade, for example. And the easiest and most polite thing to do for that would be to introduce yourself first."

Sighing, he shook his head and ran his palm over his face. "Wasn't 'chivalry' supposed to be a Gryffindor trait, too? Doesn't that include manners somewhere? Honestly, you lions...Ravenclaws have intelligence, Hufflepuffs have hard work, Slytherins have ambition, but how you lot plan to get through school, I'll never know."

This boy. The way he acted so careless with his words, yet Veronica could feel every intent behind them. He wasn’t as stupid as she had first believed. He was quite intelligent. She believed herself to be a very smart person, but this boy, he walked circles around her. She couldn’t even think properly anymore.

Ah, ah, ah," The redhead told her, obnoxiously wagging his index finger in her face. "I never said you could trust me, so how could I be wrong about that? I'll tell you now, it's a personal moral of mine never to lie because lying is too easy. I may tell a half-truth or omit something, but I don't lie."

Although he said she couldn’t trust him, sharing one of his morals, what is he doing? She’s no longer angry, just perplexed. Who is this Slytherin? His next movement however earned a glare from the Gryffindor girl.

He waved a hand dismissively. "Anyway, it's not like I claim to know anything about your heritage, so what's there for you to trust me about? I'm just making you aware that maybe you shouldn't believe just anything you hear, no matter who you hear it from. And that includes me."

Veronica knew he had a point. Her mother kept secrets from her, everyone she knew had something to keep from her, like she was a baby that needed protecting, but she was determined to change that. However, she could tell the boy wasn’t finished speaking.

The boy made a show of examining his nails. “If you want to know my name, you’re going to have to do better than that. An even trade, for example. And the easiest and most polite thing to do for that would be to introduce yourself first.

Veronica blinked a few times. The gears in her mind finally turning. Damnit! I’m so stupid, where are my manners?

Sighing, Veronica watched as he shook his head and ran his palm over his face.

Veronica lowered her head. He had a point. She had been so rude towards the boy. Taking a deep breath, she raised her head and looked at the boy with a smile, and stood up before extending her hand. “My name, is Veronica Turner. It’s a pleasure to meet you...” She trailed off, hoping the boy before her would fill in where she had left off.

After all his taunting and jeering, Jack had most certainly expected the girl to get angry with him as so many others did. Instead, however, he watched her lower her head, take a deep breath, and then look up again, smiling. she smiled, completely throwing him off his guard.

She couldn't really have meant she thought it was a pleasure to meet him, could she have? And yet he couldn't detect any sarcasm in her voice. "Oh, uh...Jack Burnett," he supplied, committing her name to memory as he absently shook the hand offered to him. What a strange girl. Were all Gryffindors as peculiar as she was? Well no, they couldn't have been; not from the ones he'd met already.

"So, um...next time you think about insulting someone else for their heritage or blood," he started up again, trying to remember what point he had been trying to make in the first place, "...just...think about what I told you." Shaking his finger a few more times for good measure, he realized he felt stupid and stopped.

"Anyway...have a good rest of your meal, I guess. I'm...going to go...do things." Perhaps it was best to leave now. The girl was starting to worry him.
