It was a warm, sunny Saturday morning. Cynthia sat up in bed and rubbed her eyes. She looked around the dormitory and saw that she was the only girl still there. The other girls were already gone. Cynthia had slept in late and thought the other girls were probably in the common room. She got out of bed and got dressed in her favorite muggle outfit. She brushed her hair and tied it back with a silk ribbon. She turned back and carefully made her bed before heading out of her dormitory. As she headed towards the door of the common room, she noticed it too was empty.
She decided they must be having breakfast in the Great Hall and headed off to join them. She entered the Great Hall and saw a few clusters of students sitting here and there and the four house tables. She quietly walked over and sat down at the Hufflepuff table. She helped herself to some breakfast and waited for the morning post to arrive. She didn’t have long to wait as a few moments later, several owls came flying into the Great Hall and searched for their owners. The owls dropped packages and letters onto the tables before their owners.
Cynthia had a package dropped before her and she knew that it was from her parents. She tore off the brown wrapping and opened the box. Inside was some of her favorite Honeyduke’s candy, the latest edition of the Daily Prophet and a small square mirror which she recognized as a two-way mirror. “Wow, I’ve always wanted one of these!” she said to herself.

Reid came a little late for breakfast, he had ended up having to tidy his part of the dormitory before the other boys had to suffer from his mess. As he walked into the Hall, he saw some of the owls flying out, did he have any mail? It didn't seem like so as he didn't get an bit of parcel in his hands. It could be another day, his mum promised to send him a new Derby County FC jersey for their new season. Most of the things he asked for seemed to be quite normal as opposed to the cool and interesting objects some of the other students got.
He'd ask for such things if he knew they existed in the first place, but at the same time, he didn't like asking too much. Reid rolled his sleeves up as he saw a familiar face on one side of the Hufflepuff table. The name luckily came quicker than he anticipated, it would have been awkward if he greeted her without knowing who she was. As he got closer, he greeted the girl, "Hey, morning Cynthia." Reid hoped she wouldn't mind if he sat opposite of her, grabbing himself some food from the wall of morsels that separated them.
He realized she was holding something and quickly quipped, "Nice mirror, did you just get that?" From his point of view, it looked like a normal mirror and he took it as such. The fact that it could be a magical object didn't really occur to him. The boy grabbed some biscuits and jam; slathering a healthy heap of the berry jam atop of the biscuit. This was his favorite part of the day, eating at the Great Hall.

Cynthia was very thankful that her parents would take the time to send her packages and letters while she was away at school. As much as she loved being at Hogwarts, she sometimes wished she was back at home with her parents, who she missed greatly. After breakfast, she decided to go back to her dormitory and write her parents a letter, thanking them for their package. Her parents taught her to use good manners at all times and her family was very close and very loving.
She looked around at the other students nearby who had also gotten mail. Like her, some had gotten packages. Somewhere she heard a howler go off in the Great Hall. She didn’t know who the receiver was, but was glad it was not her. She had never gotten a howler before, but she knew they were bad. She turned her attention back to her own package when an older Hufflepuff boy said good morning and sat down opposite her. She recognized him from the campout. His name was Reid and she warmly replied, “Good morning, Reid. Yes, my parents just sent me this two-way mirror.” She smiled as she held it up. “They knew how much I wanted one of these,” she added.

Reid paused his boysenberry jam onslaught once she mentioned a 'two-way mirror'. Wait, what did that mean exactly? "Two way?" he repeated curiously, lowering his butterknife. Reid took the rest of the time to look at it, confused and yet equally fascinated it. It looked like a normal mirror, oh - maybe it was a portal! It could be a portal like that one episode of that sci-fi cartoon show he used to watch. Yet it seemed awfully small to be a portal, so the burning question finally came to hand.
Reid leaned forward a little with his head slightly turned, "Uh - what does it do? It looks pretty fancy." He didn't really like asking sometimes, but he couldn't help not knowing. It was hard to sometimes accept the fact that he was simply ignorant to the 'technology' that the wizarding world possessed. He took a bite of the jam covered english muffin, relishing in the tart sweetness of it. His eyes quickly searched for the orange juice to pour himself a goblet of it.
Once found, Reid filled his cup to the brim and placed it nearby in case Cynthia would want some too. Perhaps she already ate though, he didn't exactly remember what time he managed to pull himself from his bed. At least he was able to talk to her in better circumstances, there weren't any scary demons from the campout that was involved. He wasn't in need to run for the hills anytime soon.

Cynthia smiled at her friend’s interest and curiosity. “They usually come in pairs of two and are used for communication. My parents each have one in their office at the Ministry of Magic. Now that they have sent me one, I can use it to talk with them. You just say their name into it. They appear in yours and you appear in theirs. You could say that two-way mirrors are kinda rare. I don’t know many people who have them,” she explained. Not only did their parents have them in their offices, they have one in their house as well.
Reid seemed very curious about magical things in the wizarding world. Perhaps he was not around magic as often as Cynthia was. She knew there were some witches and wizards who didn’t know anything about the wizarding world until they reached the eleventh birthday. There were even some magical people who grew up and lived in the muggle world. She carefully held the mirror as if it were very fragile. This was something she truly treasured. She would take very special care of it. She picked up her goblet of juice and took a sip from it. “What do you think?” she asked.

Eira, sitting on the same side of the table along with Cynthia, couldn't help but overhear the conversation. She was already sitting at the Hufflepuff's table and had came in earlier than some of the students. She likes to get up early to enjoy the morning's bliss, and on the plus side, she can also observe other students. This has become part of her everyday routine, which didn't really change at all when she's at home. In her surroundings, she is natrually blended in due to her quiet personality.
"Two way mirror?" she thought to herself.
She scooted closer to Cynthia dragging her breakfast plate with her along with her mail she recieve from her mom.
"Hello. How goes your morning? I see you recieve a two way mirror. That's quite a object you have. I've never seen anything like it before." Her intrested at the two way mirror reflected her thoughts of her parents. "If I could have something like this, perhaps I will be able to contact them anytime I can!" she smiled slightly trying not to let the others notice it. "If you don't mind me asking, but where can you get one?"
Almost forgetting her manners she introduced herself, "My name is Eira, Eira Carnarvan." She stood up and lifted her left hand to Cynthia and the other hand towards Reid. "Nice to meet you."

Reid took a quick glance around the table to see if anyone else he knew was around. He tended to be the one who would wave to the people he knew, despite them being so far away. Yet he turned his head back towards Cynthia at the mention of the mirror's ways. Curiosity danced in his forest hues as she explain it, a concept easy to understand and yet almost all so fantastical to someone like him. The mention of the Ministry brought back some memories of his mother explaining its existence and it's role in his estranged family's history.
Nonetheless, his attention was upon the mirror. "Brilliant." he breathed, smiling a little. Reid continued to take a bite of his biscuit and a quick sip from his goblet. "I've honestly never seen that before, but there's this muggle device called a webcam that does the same thing - kind of." Was it taboo to speak about muggle technology?
After their harrowing experience at the campout, he made a future note to never bring anything from the world outside of magic. Perhaps she even already knew about what he was talking about too, that would've been awkward. Reid was about to explain it further till he saw Eira scoot closer, perhaps the mirror drew some more interest. He hastily brushed the crumbs from his hand and shook her own as he chewed his food.
"Weid." Oh, the boy swallowed his food and cleared his throat. Manners maketh man, certainly. "Reid Kovacs, nice to meet you Eira." he sheepishly clarified. He pulled his hand away not a moment too soon and this time stuck his fork in some sausages. "If it breaks, does it stop working? Or if you fix it, will it still work too?" It was some basic questions he was curious of.

“Good morning, Eira,” Cynthia said to the other student, who moved a bit closer to her and Reid and shook her hand. This made it easier for the three of them to talk. “My parents sent me this mirror so I can talk to them whenever I need to. I was just telling Reid that they each have one in their office at the Ministry and we have one in our home,” Cynthia told her.
Reid had asked if it was like muggle web cams to which Cynthia replied, “I’m not too familiar with muggle devices. From what my parents had told me once, I guess two-way mirrors are similar to them. My mother knows a bit about muggle devices.” Reid and Eira both seemed quite interested in Cynthia’s new mirror and she seemed all too happy to tell them about it. “The one in our home has been broken once before and we did repair it. When it was broken, we did notice that it did still work just fine,” she added.
Cynthia remembered about using a muggle flashlight at the campout. She had temporarily forgotten that muggle devices go crazy near magic. She had promised herself that she would not bring muggle devices to Hogwarts in the very near future. She wouldn’t want the Headmaster to write home to her parents, who would probably send her a Howler in return.

"Oh really?" she questioned Cynthia's answer on how she received the mirror. "My parents also work at the Ministry of Magic. Though, I don't really know what they do exactly. It's so hard to keep in touch with them besides through letters. They've never had one before. I'm guessing it differs from departments within."
"And... speaking of muggle devices. I find it funny that we live in the muggle world, but never interact with any muggles or muggle devices before coming to Hogwarts." Eira speaks out of her personal experiences. "Or is it just me?"
Eira was kinda surprise at herself on how comfortable she feels talking to other people she never knew before. Perhaps, it's because she is just a nosy person. One of these days, her curiosity might get the better of her.... or not. Mr. Molony always did predicted her getting into trouble at Hogwarts. Especially, what happen last night at the ballroom.
She turned her attention to her plate and stabbed the last few mixed eggs with her fork into her mouth, before reaching over to the pint of orange juice to fill her cup. This was going to be her third cup of orange juice in a row. She couldn't help to resist the taste of orange juice especially when there's pulp included.

Cynthia carefully wrapped the mirror back into its wrappings before gently placing it back into the package. She did not want anything to happen to it. She wondered if her parents put any protective spells on it. Perhaps some kind of shatter-resistant spell or something similar to it. She was intrigued when Eira said that her parents worked at the Ministry as well.
“Wow, your parents work at the Ministry too? Which department are they in? My father works in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and my mother works in the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes,” Cynthia asked Eira. “Most of the time, my parents and I use the mirrors for emergencies. Since I have one of my own now, I can speak to them whenever I need to,” she added with a smile. Cynthia decided to try the mirror out the first quiet moment she got and she hoped it was soon.
“I’ve only been to the muggle world a couple of times with my parents. Rather short visits too, I might add,” Cynthia told her new friend.. Cynthia did not have much knowledge about muggle devices, but she did like to hear about them. She tried to envision what certain muggle devices might look like.
