Older Than She Seems PV Béatrice Lydursdattir

When Jack had received Professor Béatrice Lydursdattir as the recipient for his gift in the professor-student Secret Santa, naturally he was curious. As the teacher taught an elective course that was offered to third-years and higher, the first-year Slytherin knew next to nothing about her. However, the more he asked around, the more he began to hear strange rumors.

For one, there was the claim that the woman was over 100 years old and she didn’t leave her tower because the stairs were hard on her old bones. There were others, though, who claimed she looked closer to 30 or 40, so Jack found himself utterly perplexed. As far as he was aware, there was no spell or artifact that could reverse one’s age. Did this woman have some special secret up her sleeve?

Realizing she would be particularly busy just before the holiday vacation, he sent her an owl asking if she would meet with him to answer the questions regarding the rumors he’d heard. He was especially interested because of his passion for history and believed an experienced lady like the professor probably had a lot of fascinating stories to tell.

Professor Lydursdattir had responded telling him that she would be available to speak with him once vacation was underway for the students after Christmas. She also revealed that yes, she was over 100 years old, but warned him she might not have had the answers he was looking for as a history fanatic.

Regardless, once all the grades were in and the teachers had a chance to breathe a little, Jack decided to go up to the Ancient Runes tower and pay Professor Lydursdattir a visit. Pausing before her classroom door, he took a breath, exhaled deeply, and knocked.

The cold breeze was soothing on her skin. She breathed in the chilly wind that roared through her office. All her windows were open with a small fire fighting against the cold. It was the first winter for Béatrice in Hogwarts after coming to school during the summer and it was the first time she felt at ease. England was too warm for her taste, but with the first snow, she finally could relax a bit, while wearing her thick fur.  She had felt far too naked for too long. Her rat Einar was sleeping in her neck beneath the coat and enjoying the warmth of her body.

Hopefully, the winter in Hogwarts was just as long as the summer, she thought as she turned away from the window and returned to her desk.

The school was almost empty by now. Most of the students had returned home to celebrate with their families and friends, even some of her colleagues had taken the train or other means of transportation to enjoy the holidays away from Hogwarts. Béatrice didn't mind to stay at the school, she had no home to return to or people to celebrate with, not that she minded. She didn't know better. Still, the thick log was simmering in the fireplace and a faint odour of cider was filling the air. This was her only tacit admission to the old traditions.

While the school was almost empty, she still had some leftover homework to grade and essays to read. She usually hadn't the patience to sit through hours of correcting and admired some of her colleagues who were able to correct docents of parchments within an hour. She, however, needed a break from time to time. She had actually interrupted her grading because she was expecting a young student. A first-year boy who has wanted to visit her and who had questions, or so he had written in the letter. Maybe he had changed his mind after she had answered him, that she might not have the answers he was looking for. Well, she wouldn't go away anyway. With one hand she reached for the feather and with the other she gently patted Einar's head.

OOC: Béatrice is in her office, not the classroom. You are in the tower so you will see two doors opposite each other. One is the classroom door and the other is her office.

As there was no reply to his knock, Jack experimentally tried opening the door. The classroom was empty inside, so he frowned and closed it again. That just left the other door to knock on.

"Um...Professor...?" he called after rapping his knuckles on the wood a few times. Perhaps his voice was a little too quiet. Clearing his throat, he tried to raise his volume somewhat as he tried again. "Professor...um..."

Shoot. He didn't know how to say her name properly. Hopefully, she would answer to just 'professor' for now, as she was likely the only one up there in that tower at that time, but the first year made a mental note. How she pronounced her name would be one of the first things he asked of her.

"It's Jack Burnett. I think I sent you an owl before the winter break asking if we could talk...?"

The tentative Slytherin boy rubbed his hands together to warm them in the cold air of such high altitude. Was it always that chilly in that tower? Did she like it that way, perhaps? Jack tried to think of all the questions he had wanted to ask her. Consequently, he recalled the reason he had first requested to visit her and find out more about her in the first place.

He had been working on sending her a Secret Santa gift. Idly, he wondered if she'd ever received said gift and, if she had, what she'd thought of it. It hadn't been his best work, admittedly, but he had had only so much to go off of at the time.
